Donna Taylor is an award-winning horror author who looks at all things scary as something comforting. Her first love is young adult horror, the product of years of Fear Street, Nightmare Hall, and more Christopher Pike than she can shake a Ouija board at. When reading one of her books, you are promised something assuredly creepy, a little bit spooky, and may make you laugh at inappropriate times.

Apparently I need to stop saying I’m not a series person because I ate this second installment up like the most delicious cake!

We’re back with our favorite trio in this read, plus a few fun additions. Taylor introduces us to some more eccentric characters and my favorite, in particular, is Mags. A witchy librarian? Hello, my personal hero!

The climax in this one had my heart pounding and flipping the pages at warp speed. And prepare yerselves because this one got emotional.

This series is perfect for the adult who is looking to dive into YA horror. At times, I forgot I was reading about teenagers because Taylor has fleshed out the characters perfectly and made them so dimensional.
The pacing was on point, the laughs were plenty, and the ending had me excited for the 3rd book.

Thank you to the author for the early copy!

This book was so much fun!! Monsters in the Mountains is perhaps even a misnomer, because wow… it’s so much scarier than the what the connotation of monsters brings to mind.

From book 1 to book 2, the wit, depth, and complexity have developed greatly from characters, to the weaving of a multilayered narrative. Book 2 is much darker, goes deeper, and is unapologetic in style. Taylor’s writing had me ensorcelled.

It’s like her writing grew up from book 1 to book 2, mimicking the growth of the characters, and said hold on and never stopped. This book is about friends, relationships with high stakes, mental health, and consequences done with a cadence that makes you insatiable for the next chapter.

I found myself out right belly laughing. I really didn’t know that the author could be this funny! The first book is suspenseful, atmospheric and moody. But in this one, the humor adds a magical layer to the plot and characters that the series could easily be known for her signature comedic moments! She keeps all of the suspense, atmosphere, and mood, but takes it to the next level. Sad. Shocked. Scared. Laughing. It’s wonderful.

This book pulls no punches. Grotesque. Super natural. Real consequences. Wickedly descriptive writing! SO many scenes are imprinted on my mind followed by ache in my heart.

Donna Taylor, writing a book like that immediately made you one of my favorite authors. I’m ready for book 3 right now.
