I requested "Write Yourself Home" because I’ve been hearing the word “embodied” used in so many different contexts lately, and I was curious about what an embodied approach to writing might look like. I was also interested in the book’s potential relevance for people living with chronic illness, pain, and other ongoing health issues.

The introduction was probably the most powerful part of the book for me. Johanna Franzel writes about her own experience with GI issues and pain and about finding some relief through writing. Her story made me think about my own experiences with health issues over the years and about the different practices we find to help us live with circumstances we cannot necessarily change. After injuries from a car accident, I found my way back to yoga and eventually to meditation and mindfulness. During a significant health issue in 2020, I also journaled regularly and maintained a daily meditation practice.

Perhaps because I’ve been a journaler and diarist for decades, some of Franzel’s eight-step process felt more elaborate than I personally needed. The suggestions in the early “Write” section, for example, reminded me of techniques a therapist or counselor might recommend for calming anxiety, grounding yourself, or becoming more aware of what you’re feeling—translated into writing practices. For someone who has difficulty knowing where to begin with a journal or putting feelings into words, however, that additional structure could be exactly what is needed.

Franzel is clearly sincere and passionate about what she is offering. I appreciated that she provides a free five-minute audio meditation for settling and grounding, although I would have welcomed references to additional meditation resources and teachers as well. I also appreciated the Notes section and the resources provided there, even though there were a few places where I found myself wanting a little more attention to attribution and research. One example was the discussion of “permission slips,” a concept I associate with Brené Brown’s earlier work rather than Marc Brackett.

At times the book felt somewhat rambling to me, and I occasionally found the amount of guidance overwhelming. But that may say as much about my long familiarity with journaling, yoga, meditation, and mindfulness as it does about the book. Not everyone comes to writing easily, even when the writing is only for themselves.

I can particularly see "Write Yourself Home" being useful for people who facilitate support groups for those living with chronic illness or pain, as well as for individuals who want a structured writing practice and are willing to set aside time to work through the exercises. There is a compassionate message at the heart of this book, and I think the right reader could find a great deal of value in its practices.

Thank you to NetGalley, North Atlantic Books, and Johanna Franzel for providing me with a digital ARC and the opportunity to read and offer my honest review.

I received a complimentary ARC copy of Write Yourself Home: A Creative Guide for Living Well in the Body You Have Through Embodied Writing and Movement Practice by Johanna Franzel from Net Galley and North Atlantic Books in order to read and give an honest review.

… It is perfect for writers, journalers, and anyone craving a gentler relationship with their body and inner voice. …

Write Yourself Home by Johanna Franzel is about coming home to yourself, not who you were before or who you hope to be, but learning to find peace, love, joy, and acceptance for who you are now. As someone who navigates chronic illness, this book feels less like a workbook and more like sitting with someone who genuinely understands what it means to live in a body that carries pain, memory, and resilience. Franzel’s invitation to “stop making sense” struck me deeply; it’s such a simple line, yet it helps you find a more forgiving way of being.

The book unfolds in six lessons, each guiding you a little closer to yourself through writing, breath, and gentle somatic practices. Franzel doesn’t offer quick fixes or glossy wellness promises. Instead, she meets readers exactly where they are, whether they are navigating chronic illness, burnout, trauma, or the uneasy feeling of disconnection. Her prompts are thoughtful and expansive, encouraging honesty without pressure.

I especially appreciated the sections on masking, medical “noncompliance,” and the emotional realities of chronic pain. Franzel writes with fierce compassion, acknowledging the hard parts while still making space for joy, creativity, and community. The exercises and prompts were deeply thoughtful, helping me reconnect with parts of myself I often overlook.

This is a book I’ll return to again and again. It’s soothing, insightful, and beautifully written. I highly recommend it. It is perfect for writers, journalers, and anyone craving a gentler relationship with their body and inner voice. Quietly powerful and deeply needed.

Write Yourself Home by Johanna Franzel is a deeply gentle, affirming, and nourishing book—one that feels less like something you read and more like something you experience. From the very first pages, it creates a sense of safety, inviting you to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with yourself through writing as an act of care rather than performance.
What makes this book truly special is its compassion. Franzel writes with tenderness and emotional intelligence, meeting the reader exactly where they are. The prompts are thoughtful and expansive without being overwhelming, encouraging honest reflection, self‑trust, and a sense of belonging within yourself. There is no pressure to write “well” or to uncover anything dramatic—only an invitation to listen inwardly and let what is true emerge.
The tone feels like being gently guided by a steady, empathetic presence. Themes of identity, healing, creativity, and home—both internal and external—are woven together beautifully. This book validates rest, softness, and imperfect expression in a world that often demands clarity and productivity, making it especially meaningful for anyone feeling disconnected, burnt out, or searching for grounding.
Write Yourself Home is a book to return to again and again. It’s ideal for writers, journalers, and anyone craving a more compassionate relationship with their inner voice. Thoughtful, soothing, and quietly powerful, this is a book that truly lives up to its name—and one I can’t recommend highly enough.

Write Yourself Home offers a thoughtful and creative approach to embodiment, inviting readers to develop a deeper relationship with the body they have rather than pursuing an imposed idea of perfection or wholeness. Johanna Franzel brings together writing, movement, breathing, parts work, and personal reflection in a way that makes the book feel both creative and practical. The attention to chronic illness, trauma, ability, pleasure, and belonging gives the work a particularly compassionate perspective. Its emphasis on creativity and daily embodied practice makes this more than a collection of exercises; it is an invitation to develop a personal understanding of what living well can mean.

Thank you NetGalley and North Atlantic Books for the review copy of Johanna Franzel's "Write Yourself Home."

This is an excellent writing guide. Franzel combines her work as a holistic healer with the documented benefits of a personal journal practice and somatic writing to give readers an experience-based emotional and physical guide to wellness. Franzel's book shows that there is a correlation between addressing your thoughts, fears, anxiety, and distress and physical health. An unsettled mind leads to elevated stress, which affects the body. A body can't heal when it is in a constant state of mental fight or flight.
Johanna Franzel's book is a useful guide for individuals working alone or as a group. Healing circle leaders and wellness coaches will find this beneficial for group writing sessions. I have been incorporating some of Franzel's practices into my own journal work, and can say that people will benefit from the prompts she includes.
