I find, as I read further into the series, that I am appreciating the tiny notes and nuances more and more, even though they are difficult to read with these old eyes. They are like the fine lines in a piece of artwork. You can enjoy the work of art without studying the the parts that make up the whole, yet the elegance of those parts are worth noting.

This volume takes us out of the streets of London and into the internal life of a circus. A circus that may hold the key to several missing children. The Queen has requested that her watchdog - Earl Ciel Phantomhive -- finds those children, and that he brings them home safely.

Ciel and his Demon Butler soon learn that the only way they can investigate the circus properly is by joining it.

It is quite entertaining to watch Sebastian show off his many talents, and even more so, watching the young Earl attempt to fit into circus life as a commoner.

Secrets are revealed, leading to more questions, and a grim reaper tries to foil Sebastian's every move. Will our two heroes survive poisonous snakes, the trapeze, and badly peeled potatoes?

In this one the arts are fantastic, amazing, beautiful, gorgeous! With this volume start the part of the story about the Circus, and it's an amazing part, full of new characters (and all of them are drawn so well *_*) and with a new plot, a new mystery to unravel. And we have some potential for something really creepy. I loved this first part, the introduction to the circus and to his inhabitants, and now I need to know more. Snake and Joker are my favorites, so far, but I really hope to learn more about them all.
Ad we met someone from the past, too! I simply can't wait to see what would happen next!

Sometimes I really wish I could unwatch the anime so that I would enjoy the manga more.

I love circuses and circus-themed books are my guilty pleasures. I also did love the third season of the anime (the circus related one) a lot. Its just that, knowing everything that's going to happen really spoils the fun of reading. Still, the art was breath taking and Sebastatian and Ciel were as amazing as always.

Now, on to the chapter to chapter analysis. Contains spoilers

Ah, the circus. Tightrope walking, fire eaters, knife throwing, dangerous wild anim-

oh.

So Sebastian and Ciel infiltrate a circus on the Queen's orders in search of a large number of missing children. Ciel has to pass an "entrance test" to prove that he is worth taking on and Sebastian, wonder butler that is he, is all too happy to help Ciel keep his balance on the tightrope.

And then a wild reaper appears! As quite possibly the world's worst "spy". I legit snorted aloud when I saw this panel, though - they look so incredibly horrified to be put together as "roommates".

Through a pratfall, Ciel's brand is exposed and we're treated to what is essentially a minor panic attack on his part, where he is brought low by the memories of his captors. Sebastian wordslaps him out of it with a few well-chosen phrases needling at the one thing Ciel clings to, his pride as Earl of Phantomhive.

I suppose Ciel's soul will be tastier if he is constantly dipped in and out of abject misery, like a nice crusty sourdough with fondue. Gruyere, with some aged cheddar and maybe swiss? Yum.

Okay, there really is no way to say this without sounding like a creep, so I'm just going to say it... DAMN Ciel looks sexy as HELL on the cover XD Haha, thank you Japan for making us all creepers :-p

I really liked the circus theme of this volume (and no surprise, the circus crew is a bunch of sexy bitches too). Of course, it had a good balance of seriousness and hilarity that I enjoy while reading this manga series. I can't wait to they all come out in the US and I buy them all so I can read them consecutively instead of months apart waiting for the library copies.

****pictures to come soon****

I really enjoyed this book and the art as usual was stunning. I think I'm going to enjoy this story arc within the series, I like the idea of the travelling circus and I look forward to finding out what exactly is going on with the missing children. Sebastian is such a great character, I wish I had a butler like him minus the whole demon thing.

As Sebastian and Ciel try to find missing children, the come across a circus and start to perform to get more information, with pretty funny results.

That tiger/Sebastian scene is 10/10

Recommended 14+ for language and weird situations.

And I’ve finished reading yet another of the Black Butler books. In this one we move from the fancy areas where Lord Phantomhive usually hangs, and go join the circus!

No really. Both Ciel and Sebastian do join the circus to solve a mystery of children disappearing. Not as important as VICTORIAN GOTH FANTASY CIRCUS, OMG!!!! o.O <3

I love it so much, geezes. This was amazing. The characters in the circus are indeed as colourful as you’d imagine. And as creepy. And as mysterious. There is, of course, something strange going on at this circus. The circus-people are divided up, and the top performers are the ones with the best tents, the best food, and all the best the circus can bring. All the others work their butts off to reach said level. But as the plot thickens there seems to be something else that binds those at the top level together…

Ciel is struggling here, for sure. He is Lord Earl Ciel Phantomhive. He is not used to manual labor. He is not used to doing tricks. And, above all, he does not smile. Ever. Now he has to do all of that.

Sebastian excels, of course he does. He ain’t human, the demon/devil that he is. So he fits right in and excels at any trick they ask him to do. Still, he is following Ciels every word as they try to find clues to where the missing kids are.

My favorite character in the circus has to be the ring-leader, Joker. He is friendly and welcomes those who want to join the circus with open arms. At first. Before testing them, and that’s some tough tests for sure! Still, he seems to be the one who holds the circus together, even if he is not the official owner and leader. That one we have yet to meet.

I also found the circus doctor intriguing. Apparently most members of the circus have a physical flaw of some sort and many, if not most top level, members have a prosthesis of some sort made by him. He seems kind and very caring about the circus members. I wonder how he ended up there though and why so many have prostheses….

Another character I want to know more of is Doll. She looks absolutely gorgeous, but keeps showing up in the strangest ways and in doing that gives off a little creepy vibe. I so want to know more about her!

Unlike the other Black Butler books I’ve read though, this one did not have a proper ending! The mystery was NOT solved and the book ended in a cliffhanger! First one to do so! In the others the mystery Ciel and Sebastian worked on was solved and then you started a new mystery in the next book. Not here though. Maybe because this mystery is more complicated? Or we’re in such a cool environment as the circus? Who knows?

This was a pretty exciting beginning to the circus arc. The pacing does feel slower here, but given that Ciel and Sebastian are meant to be investigating the numerous disappearances of children and trying to determine if those disappearances are connected in any way with this traveling circus.

A lot of time does seem to be focused on introducing us to several circus members in rapid succession, so there's a lot to keep track of in terms of characters and their roles in the circus and their relationships with one another. I'm not entirely sure this is balanced as well as it could be, because there seems to be more of a lean in the direction of playing these characters and their relationships up for comedic effect, and less for the intrigue and mystery. I think the reappearance of William T. Spears and his behavior and reactions to Sebastian don't exactly help in this regard, as a lot of that is played up for comedic effect too. Still, there are good moments of tension throughout, and I like these moments where Ciel is forced out of his comfort zone and we see his struggles to adapt to working within different class confines and social expectations than what he's been raised in. As far as it goes towards building character growth and evolution, that is probably going to be a slow-burn that pans out over the course of the series, but it's nice to have that foundation being laid out for the audience to see.
