On the island nation Monsterro, fire controls everything. And fire is controlled by a family known as the Godfreys
Joe Godfrey is the young heir of this clan, but despite this responsibility, Joe seems incapable of staying out of trouble, landing himself in jail where he meets many strange new people
Now separated from his family, will Joe return ready to become Lord of the Godfreys, or will he choose to follow his own path?
Welch does a great job here painting the world and you can see the mixture of eastern and western cultures in the way the characters are named, dressed, etc. There’s some intrigue, a lot of action, some self reflection of the main character of Joseph “Joe” Godfrey. I particularly liked the way that Angelo was presented and I liked reading his dialogue because I definitely heard that southern-inspired drawl.
Overall a great first book from Welch and I’m interested to see where this series goes, especially because it looks like Joe has single-handedly changed the entire structure of his society. The last few chapters in particular ZOOMED with action. Loved it.
