This was such a fun read! I highly enjoyed myself!
Now historical romance isn’t my typical genre, but I’m trying to expand my horizons! 🤣
But Alyssa did a post for the book and sucked me right in!
“All I’m saying is she hasn’t been touched since her husband died, and he asks, “When was the last time someone made you feel good?””
We follow Matilda, who is a widow, and Gregory, who is in the throws of his work. Gregory runs into Matilda at a courting season event. He wants to court her, and she doesn’t want that. She is still grieving her husband.
This is a beautiful story of life, love, new relationships, and rediscovering love again. Gregory is such a wonderful and patient man! Matilda is a beautifully grieving and inspiring woman!
There is spice, so much heart, and compassion in this story! Highly recommend this book! 🩷
Since I’ve only read a small handful of historical romance/regency era books, I’ve had to look up some the lingo! lol

Thank you NetGalley, Kingsley Publishers, and Alyssa Martin for the opportunity to read this ARC!

This is a story of healing a heart in grief. Learning to love again and accepting that one love does not erase the other. They continue on in a circle of emotion, ever expanding to new depths. Matilda had a once in a lifetime love, but this doesn’t she can’t love again. This woman has a long journey to acceptance, to work past her guilt and free her heart to love again. Thankfully Gregory is a man of patience. After spending years devoted only to his mathematical treatise, he has honed those skills and is thus able to wait patiently. Her love may be hidden, but the more you read you see bits and pieces of it slipping into the light. She truly can’t help herself but love the man beside her. This was a lovely story with heart at its core.

During the height of the London Season, a widowed chaperone crosses paths with a duke determined to claim her heart. As society watches closely, secret encounters and unresolved grief threaten to upend everything she believes about love and loyalty.

5⭐️/5 — 3🌶️/5 (4 chapters/50)

💖 Second chance at love
🤫 Secret relationship
⚡️ Forced proximity
❤️‍🔥 He falls first (and hard)
💚 Green flag MMC
🖤 Widow FMC

This was an incredible Regency romance that completely won me over. I initially worried the story might lean too heavily into spice given how early those scenes appear, but everything felt earned and coherent within the narrative. The pacing, emotional depth, and character development were beautifully balanced, making this a deeply satisfying and romantic read from start to finish.

⚠️ Spoilers Ahead
🌍 Setting & Context
The story takes place during the English Regency era, amid the London Season, when young women are formally introduced into society in hopes of securing advantageous matches. Matilda, widowed for three years, serves as chaperone to three of her cousins during the Season. Her role places her directly in society’s spotlight, unaware that she herself would soon become the focus of an unexpected courtship.

👩🏻 Matilda
Matilda is a complex and emotionally conflicted heroine. Still deeply in love with her late husband, Ferdy, she believes that moving on would mean betraying the love they shared. Her internal struggle between honoring her past and acknowledging her growing feelings for Gregory is central to the story.
While I personally struggled with her reluctance at times, largely because of how deeply I sympathized with Gregory, I appreciated how her arc explored grief, guilt, and the idea that love does not replace but can coexist with past love. Her journey, supported by Lynette and Aiden, toward accepting that her mourning could end without erasing her past, was thoughtful and meaningful. I also enjoyed her straightforward nature.

« A man like Gregory-so steadfast, so generous in spirit and in kindness-deserved to be someone's everything, and she feared she was too broken from Ferdy's loss to ever be that person. »

« Would she ever be able to tell Gregory she loved him, or was she destined to make the same mistake she'd made with Ferdy? »

🧔🏻‍♂️ Gregory
Gregory is the definition of a green flag MMC. Patient, empathetic, emotionally intelligent, and endlessly devoted, he falls for Matilda immediately (and deeply). His persistence never crosses into pressure; instead, it’s rooted in respect and understanding.

His early flirtation made me genuinely giggle, and his unwavering commitment to Matilda, even when she cannot fully return it, was heartbreaking. After their marriage, seeing his quiet misery, wanting nothing but her love, was especially poignant. Gregory embodies “he falls first and hard” in the best possible way.
« —What are you saying?
—I’m saying I want to court you.
—While I am flattered, Your Grace, I've already had one husband, so I'm not looking for another.
—Then what about a lover? When was the last time someone made you feel good? » ❤️‍🔥

« —Does that mean you have decided to court me against my wishes?
—Perhaps.
—Why are you so certain you want me?
—Because you've lodged your way into my mind with one conversation, and now you're all I can think about. »

« See, dancing with me isn't such a hardship. You know what else wouldn't be a hardship? Spending the night with me. »

❤️ Romance & Relationship
The romance is built on secrecy, longing, and emotional restraint. The tension between Matilda’s unresolved grief and Gregory’s open devotion creates a compelling push-and-pull dynamic. Their relationship explores the idea that loving again does not diminish past love, it expands it.

Having both POVs enriched the emotional stakes, allowing us to fully experience Gregory’s devotion and Matilda’s inner conflict. The chemistry, pacing, and emotional payoff were all beautifully handled.

🔮 What I’d love to see next
A spin-off romance for Teresa and Thomas
A story centered on Theo, Matilda’s brother

What I loved :
-A strong, emotionally mature Regency romance
-A truly green flag MMC
-Thoughtful exploration of grief and second love
-Excellent pacing and tension
-Dual POV and engaging secondary characters

What I liked less :
-Matilda’s prolonged struggle with guilt, though it fits her character (a personal preference rather than a flaw)

Recommended if you enjoy :
-Regency romance with emotional depth
-Widow FMCs and second-chance love
-Devoted MMCs who fall first
-Romance that balances spice and story

Thank you Alyssa Martin, Kingsley Publishers and Net Galley for sending me this ARC in exchange of an honest review.

This book follows Matilda Elliot, a woman who has already tasted deep love once in her life and lost it too soon. She believes her story is over, her heart already used up. Marriage and romance are behind her.
Then she meets Gregory Seaver, the quiet and brilliant Duke of Somerset. He walks into her world with patience, respect, and steady warmth, refusing to let her fade into the background. What begins as polite connection slowly turns into stolen glances, soft moments, and a love she never expected to feel again. When one unexpected night changes everything, they’re forced to face both society and their own fears.
I loved how beautifully this book shows that love is not limited to once in a lifetime. The emotions felt so real and raw. The chemistry between Matilda and Gregory is soft, mature, and heart-melting. Gregory is literally the definition of a patient man who loves gently but fiercely.
The writing is emotional, poetic, and full of longing. It’s slow burn in the best way, and when it hits, it hits hard. I cried, smiled, and rooted for them with my whole heart.
The ending left me glowing — full of hope, second chances, and the kind of love that chooses you again and again.
Thank you so much author for the free ARC! 💗
Totally recommending this to every historical-romance lover.

✨ A heart learning to love again, even when grief refuses to loosen its grip…

📖 A Love Ellipse by Alyssa Martin
⭐️⭐️⭐️.75
🌶️🌶️🌶️
Spicy Regency Romance
TW: loss of spouse, grief

Tropes:
💔 Second chance at love
🕊️ Widow FMC
🤝 Friends with benefits
👶 Single parent
💘 He falls first

Matilda lost her husband three years ago, and life since has been embroidery, chaperoning her younger family members, and keeping her memories tucked safely behind emotional walls. Gregory, the Twelfth Duke of Somerset, is searching for a wife—but the only person he truly relaxes with, the only conversation that feels natural, is with Matilda.

This is an inner-healing romance at its core. Matilda’s journey isn’t about forgetting her late husband—it’s about understanding that moving forward doesn’t erase the love she had. She’s self-aware even when she’s stubborn, holding grief in one hand and guilt in the other, trying to figure out how to let herself feel again.

The Regency setting gives this a sweet, spicy-Bridgerton vibe. Gregory and Matilda’s connection is safe yet passionate—not obsessive, but steady, grounding, warm. Their chemistry works because it feels earned, and their intimacy feels like a tender rediscovery.

Gregory is incredibly patient with her. He never pushes, never demands. He simply stays—offering space, understanding, and a slow, unwavering devotion that feels deeply romantic.

A gentle, endearing romance about healing, choosing love again, and allowing yourself to open a bruised heart.

Bridgerton goodness

When you have already had - and lost - a once-in-a-lifetime love, how could you possibly find anything more? Find out in A Love Ellipse.

Having spent some years working on his mathematical treatise, His Grace the Twelfth Duke of Somerset - he prefers Gregory - is ready to marry. He just needs to find the right bride. Fortunately, the Season has started and the ton is in town.

But the only woman who interested him is Lady Matilda - a young, still-grieving widow with a daughter. Matilda makes it clear to Gregory she is uninterested in marriage…so he suggests an affair instead.

Matilda agrees to one night. Then, a little longer…then for the length of the season. Gregory agrees to keep their liaison secret, but insists they will marry should Matilda fall pregnant. Well, you wouldn’t believe what happens next!

This is a story about grief, guilt and dealing with repressed emotions. Fearing she is replacing her memories of her first husband, Matilda initially pushes him away before icing him out. Meanwhile, Gregory is trying to work out how to measure up to a dead man - all mixed in with Regency values and propriety. We see two versions of Matilda fall in love as the story is told across two timelines,

This is an open door book that doesn’t take too long to spice things up. The story deals with the death of a spouse, grief and infertility.

If you enjoy historical romance with a bit more spice, or enjoyed the drama of Bridgerton, add this series to your TBR.

The Love Ellipse is a reflective, emotionally intelligent exploration of grief and second love, framed by a metaphor that genuinely works.

What stood out most to me was how intentionally the book shifts in tone. The opening is bold and surprisingly spicy, rooted in scandal and urgency, but that intensity gradually gives way to something quieter and more melancholic. That transition wasn’t what I expected, and while it briefly threw me, I came to appreciate it as a deliberate choice. The story mirrors the emotional reality of grief: desire can be immediate and consuming, but love takes patience, reckoning, and emotional permission.

The heart of the novel is its handling of widowed love. The metaphor of the ellipse beautifully captures the idea that loving again doesn’t erase what came before. Grief and love are allowed to coexist, without one invalidating the other. I found that nuance especially well done; the book never rushes healing or treats remembrance as something to overcome.

The slower middle sections are contemplative and inward-facing, which will work best for readers who enjoy emotional depth over constant momentum. By the time the story blooms into love again, it feels earned. Not dramatic or sweeping, but steady and honest.

This isn’t a novel driven by plot twists or sustained heat, but by emotional truth and quiet bravery. If you’re open to a historical romance that evolves from passion into introspection and ultimately into something deeply tender, The Love Ellipse is well worth your time.

A Love Ellipse by Alyssa Martin gave me major Jane Austen meets Bridgerton vibes, and since I love this time era, this book was completely up my alley.

My heart absolutely broke for our main female character, Matilda. She’s already loved and lost him- and is now a widow. Between her grief and her struggles with infertility, she doesn’t think she deserves to open her heart again-especially in a society where marriage is so deeply tied to producing heirs and continuing a family name. All I wanted for her was to love again.

Gregory, our MMC, was such a refreshing lead (a bit rakish, but hey...). He could have chosen any bright, young woman eager for marriage, but instead he sees Matilda-her quiet strength, her sharp tongue, and the sorrow she carries (and her embroidery!) And he falls first. Hard. His devotion felt steady, intentional, and deep, which made their romance even more meaningful.

I thought the author told this story in a really beautiful way. Even though it’s set in the past, the themes of self-worth, fear of love, and infertility are things so many women can still relate to today.

The writing was lovely, the short chapters made it a quick read, and the emotions really landed for me. If you enjoy a good historical romance, this is absolutely one to pick up.

When I read the blurb I knew immediately I wanted to read this and ignore my next planned read. I'd say that is a promising start!

I breezed through this book in no time!

Gregory Seaver Duke of Sommerset has his mind set on finding a young wife now that he is almost done with his treatise. What he doesn't expect is falling for Matilda. She's a widow still grieving her first love and rejects the Duke's advances. He eventually convinces her to be with him for the Season.

Being with the Duke stirs passions and emotions in her she doesn't know what to do with because she feels she's betraying the memory of her deceased husband.

She struggles with her feelings for most of the story and Gregory holds on to the hope he can change her mind and make space in her heart for him too.

The unexpected pregnancy only further complicates her feelings. But Gregory was patient and I loved how he was with her child Rosie.

Guaranteed HEA ( a bit rushed IMO ) but a very enjoyable read!

Many thanks to Netgalley Author and Publisher for the ARC!💖

Matilda is easily one of the most infuriating FMCs I’ve ever met. I get that as women we love fiercely, madly and deeply and feel like that man we have all these feelings for is the only man we can possess these feelings for but when an established suitor picks you out of the countless amount off women he could’ve chosen, loves you under your rules and conditions even after you screw him over you accept that love. Gregory accepted Matilda with all her baggage and loved her unconditionally. He even loved her from a distance when she pushed him away. She didn’t deserve him because she only accepted any for of relationship with him because she thought she had an ace up her sleeve but God had other plans for her.

The writing was great. The world building and time/place setting was also great. I felt like I was there with the characters. There was yearning, romance, plot, drama, characters you love and characters you absolutely will not.

The ending was a beautiful moment that was cut abruptly. Not really sure how I feel about that.

Alyssa Martin has a very interesting way of creating a universe. Her works are standalone but influence each other on a wider scale. Plots weave in and out of each other like threads in a garment and unlike some more well known series you get the gift of surprise as to who our next protagonists will be.

In A Love Ellipse we follow Matilda as she struggles with the idea of finding love after loss and what it means to be a woman in regency era when conceiving is a struggle. These are very real concerns that many woman still question and battle with to this day.

The sex between her and Gregory while frequent is used in a way to tell something about the characters whether it be their expectations from a partner or how their past has shaped them. It also brings up the question of how often can a liaison go on before someone undoubtedly feels more than they should.

So far the author has done a wonderful job of showing how love can evolve in different ways from many different circumstances. I'd recommend picking up any of the Austen Generation Novels

This was my first experience reading something by this author and it was a quiet, emotional romance that really worked for me.
Matilda is a widow who believes her chance at love is over, and her feelings felt realistic and grounded. She isn’t dramatic about her grief—it’s simply part of who she is now. Gregory is steady, thoughtful, and clearly all in from the start. He falls first, and he never wavers.
The relationship develops through honest conversations and small, meaningful moments rather than big gestures. I liked that Gregory respects Matilda’s boundaries while still wanting more, and the secret affair felt driven by character, not drama. The surprise pregnancy raises the stakes in a natural way and forces both of them to face the future they’ve been avoiding.
Overall, this is a solid story about love after loss and choosing happiness again. A good pick if you enjoy second-chance love, devoted heroes, and emotionally mature romance.

Alyssa Martin has once again proven why she’s the queen of historical romance. A Love Ellipse is a heartfelt, beautifully written story of second chances that I absolutely adored. Matilda, a widow convinced her heart will never love again, is such a relatable and quietly powerful heroine. Gregory, the Duke of Somerset, is her perfect match — devoted, patient, and utterly captivated by her strength and sorrow. Their stolen moments during the Season passionate and unforgettable, and the emotional stakes rise beautifully as their bond deepens.

Alyssa’s prose is elegant yet addictive, weaving grief, resilience, and rediscovery into a romance that feels both timeless and fresh. With tropes I love — he falls first and love after loss — this book had me hooked from start to finish. Alyssa writes the most amazing historical romance, and A Love Ellipse is one of those stories that lingers long after the last page.

I will preface by saying - I am not a historical romance buff. I was drawn to sign up as an ARC after seeing Alyssa’s passion for her work, and I love to try new things!

This book was an enjoyable, captivating read. The characters are fleshed out and it’s one of those instances you can tell the author truly loves to write them, which always makes for a strong read.

I think the only qualms I had with it are some minor times that the story rushes ahead or has timeskips that feel unnecessary. As a writer myself I absolutely understand doing this because it’s exciting to get on with the parts we’re excited about but it feels a little like the exposition should’ve either been expanded upon or cut.

Either way — whether you’re a veteran in this genre or a newbie, you’re sure to have a good time. I thank the author once again for selecting me to be a part of the ARC team and I hope all who read this book have as good of a time as I did with it!

I received this book as a free ARC.

I really enjoyed this book. It is in the 3rd person omniscient, which can be hard to find nowadays. The prose is very well written. It feels period appropriate and yet easy to read. I was interested enough in the story to read it all in one sitting.

The book is the story of a widow who married her first love and a male lead who has never been married or in love before. The book deals heavily with the theme of loss, including death of a loved one and miscarriage/infertility. I enjoyed the MMC's love of geometry and the FMC's love of embroidery. The tension in the later half of the book reminds me a little of Julia Quinn's "The Duke and I". I wish this book had been a little longer, but it was an enjoyable read. I would read this book again, and I look forward to reading more books by this author.

I loved this book!

When Matilda first came on the page in My Duty to You I thought, wouldn't it be convenient if Aiden fell in love with his brother's widow? Poor woman, so grief ridden and alone with her daughter. I’m so glad that’s not what happened! Not only because Lynette and Aiden are such a great couple but because this book never would have been.

Matilda’s grief and devotion were so well written. My heart ached for her. I was rooting for her to heal throughout and got all teary eyed when she did. Gregory was exactly the man to be the second love of Matilda’s life.

Beautiful story! Matilda and Gregory are definitely in competition for my favorite of Alyssa Martin’s couples.

Thank you to the author for the ARC!

A Love Ellipse is one of those stories where the writing feels so effortless that you forget you’re reading at all. Alyssa Martin’s prose flows with such ease—smooth, warm, and inviting—that it was incredibly easy to fall into this world and stay there.

I was especially drawn to the main characters, Matilda and Gregory. Matilda is a beautifully complex woman, still carrying the quiet ache of losing the love of her life three years earlier. Her grief is subdued but ever-present, dictating her choices in life, annoyingly so sometimes. Gregory, on the other hand, is a mathematician who has just stepped back into society after spending a decade buried in academic work. His slightly awkward, earnest nature won me over immediately.

Gregory’s patient, heartfelt pursuit of Matilda made me smile . He brings such warmth and gentle humor to the story, and watching him break down Matilda’s emotional walls was incredibly sweet. Their chemistry grows slowly and naturally, making their connection feel all the more genuine.

Overall, this was a tender, clever, and quietly emotional romance that stayed with me long after I finished. I absolutely loved it.

ARC REVIEW

This is a fitting end for The Austen Generation novels.

Following Matilda work through her grief after loosing the love of her life and trying to find space for Gregory in her heart and life.

Gregory being the ever so patient man, determined to woo Matilda and make her his wife.
The affair ending with a surprise pregnancy and a marriage of convince yet she's keep pushing him away.

We got a glimpse of the first marriage too and the slow realisation that she can love both. I got a little teary eyed and laughed so hard at some of the banter. 💜

I absolutely love period romances, so I jumped at the chance to read this. This was such a beautiful story of second chances and learning to love again after grief. I don’t know if I have ever read a period romance with a second chances love story like this one. There are so many rules for romance in an older time, so it was so interesting to read about a story that you don’t often see in your typical period dramas. So, if you love second chance romance and period pieces, please check this one out.

Excellent writing by Alyssa Martin, as always! I found myself diving head first into this read thanks to the vivid descriptions and engaging storyline. Matilda is a widow who is still in love with her husband, while Gregory is a single man looking for a wife. They fall in love with each other easily, but in true romance-novel fashion, throw up their own roadblocks along the way. If you're a lover of angst and HEAs, this one is for you!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — old-fashioned boys do it better!

Gregory is the absolute perfect gentleman. I miss the days of men pining after women and doing everything they can to capture their attention. Why can’t the men in our society be like this?!

This book was such a fun, easy read with all the charm and sweetness I was hoping for.

I have not read a Regency romance in a long time, so I’m glad I had the chance to read this ARC. I really enjoyed the love and care the characters showed each other. It was not one of those rakish love stories, which I appreciated. The banter between the FMC and MMC had me smiling the whole time. Gregory was patient and kind towards Matilda and I like that the MMC can be loving. This was such a cute story, and I would definitely recommend it.

This book follows the story of Matilda, who we already know from the previous books. I was excited to read the book for her. And her enchanting story. ✨
Gregory, who has chemistry (wink ;D) pulls the reader into the black hole into the book. Literally. Couldn't put it down.
The ending alone makes the book be worth to read.
Amazing characters, amazing story, amazing book. Recommend it! 10/10

What a heartfelt read. As my first historical romance, this story truly surprised me with how emotional and moving it was. It thoughtfully highlights the importance of grieving and rediscovering yourself after loss. The characters were easy to love, and the story flowed in a way that made it both accessible and deeply impactful.
