Not In The Christmas Plan

Rate this book
From the author of The Kiss Countdown comes a charming holiday novella about a Type A lawyer, a rigorous to-do list, and the man determined to unwrap her heart.

After a string of heartbreaks, all Eve Matthews wants this year is a quiet holiday with her pregnant sister. But when early labor changes everything, so must Eve’s plans. While her sister cares for her newborns in the hospital, Eve will stay behind to finish the nursery, decorate the house, and create the perfect holiday homecoming—because if she can’t control life’s disappointments, she can at least control Christmas.

There’s just one Grant Simmons. Her brother-in-law’s infuriatingly charming brother…and the man whose peppermint-flavored kiss she’s never forgotten. She pushed him away once to protect her heart, and now he’s back—claiming he only wants to help his brother’s growing family by helping her.

It starts with stolen pie and ends with him taking up more space in her holiday, and her life, than she ever planned. Between tangled lights, flour fights, and laughter she thought she’d lost, Eve realizes what Grant really wants is a place in her heart, and that maybe the best Christmas moments aren’t on any checklist.

Still, opening her heart means risking it all. Can Eve let go of her need for control, or will fear keep her from the one gift she needs most this Christmas?

The tension in this romance was so perfect!! I absolutely love to read a romance with forced proximity and this one didn’t disappoint. If you’re looking for a romance without spice but will still give you so much yearning, this is a really cute one to pick up!

“I knew Grant was more than his jokes and easy charm, and here he is, proving that layer after layer resides a man determined to show up for his family. A man who never wanted to hurt me but cared enough to tell me the truth despite the pain. A man who refuses to let me push him away.”

This was a very sweet and wholesome story. It tackled many things like grief, family bonds, and finding love.

The chemistry between the main characters was minimal, but the seasonal setting and the storyline really helped fuel my enjoyment of this book. All the side characters (their family and even neighbors) and the storyline are what really worked for me with this book; unfortunately, the romance between the MCs in this book did not.

The main characters were kind of blah. Eve spent most of the book trying whatever she could do to push Grant away. I enjoyed the Christmas vibes.

1.5 ⭐️ This one just wasn’t for me, i lowkey wanted to dnf 😭 i feel like novellas have to be fast-paced and keep you engaged, and the pacing in this just felt really slow to me. I also couldn’t connected with the main characters and their relationship. I cared more about the sister’s birth storyline than anything. There were definitely holiday vibes though & lots of holiday activities so that counts for something!

It wasn’t for me. I liked parts of it, like her relationship with her sister and her conversation with their neighbour. But I didn’t really connect to the romance. They both kind of annoyed me, and I didn’t really feel the chemistry. It’s a shame because I wanted to love it but I think it might have just been a writing style that didn’t work for me.

This book isn't low stakes because it has themes of grief and labor complications but Eve and Grant trying to work together to make new family traditions was heartwarming.

Format: ebook
Romance tag: closed door
CN: loss of a parent (grief), mentions of loss from delivery complications, carrying accident, sports injury, delivery complications, panic attack on page

TW - death of a parent (past, mentioned, car accident [father], childbirth [mother]), traumatic birth, babies in the NICU, grief, infidelity (sc on the FMC), ruptured ACL (MMC, career ending), long term illness (implied as parent had gone into remission, past)

Tropes - christmas, brother in law

Representation - Black MCs

I found the FMC to be stubborn, selfish and childish in her actions heightened by the fact that she was the one that kissed the MMC and then proceeded to push him away. Grow up

This was SO CUTE! When Etta announced this I knew it was going to be good! And like any good holiday novella it was short and sweet and full of so much love and a there was a well balanced dose of trying to navigate the holiday season while missing someone important. I loved Eve and Ivy and their relationship so much, there is nothing I love more than a family who will do anything for each other! I also loooooooved Grant and Eve! They were a sort of second chance, right person wrong time situation?! We got a tiny sneak peak of what they were like in the past. I loved seeing them come together for Ivy and Braxton, and for themselves! It was SO GOOD!

Ummm not really what I was expecting…

I really tried to like this book, but the pacing was painfully slow for a story that’s only 155 pages. The FMC, Eve, was beyond exhausting. By page 87, she was still battling whether to let Grant in or acknowledge her feelings for him—and it became incredibly frustrating. At that point, we’re halfway through the book… let it go already.

Eve’s constant hesitation made the reading experience draining, and I came very close to not finishing. This wasn’t a strong Christmas romance for me at all. While I understand her grief and emotional struggle, with such a short book those issues should have been explored and at least partially resolved well before page 100. Instead, her indecision dragged on until the last ten pages, which felt far too late. Overall, the story had potential, but the pacing and Eve’s prolonged internal conflict really held it back.

*3.5

I have mixed feelings about this novella, I really enjoyed that the author touched upon the impact of grief during the holiday season. It’s never easy to celebrate a holiday when you’ve lost a loved one.

Eve’s experience with grief is about controlling outcomes especially when it involves loved ones. Which was really well written.

As for the romance, I didn’t really feel the chemistry between them. Grant and Eve have 2 completely different personalities and it makes them clash more than bring them together.

Grant calling himself “Big Daddy” was so 🥴.

The ending wasn’t what I expected and the solution to their relationship problem was one of the worst I’ve seen. Eve literally said let me go ahead and plan something and then it was just NOT it 😭.

I’m starting to think I have unrealistic expectations when it comes to Christmas romance stories. Geesh, I was spacing out, wishing something mind blowing would happen, but really all I got was agitated by a selfish, stubborn, annoying FMC. She did not deserve the MMC, sorry, not sorry. I wanted to DNF this one, I really did.

I’m not even sure I understand the point of the story or what I just read. Yes, Christmas was all up and through the storyline but it was forgettable, at best.

This is the second book I’ve read by this author, the first read I enjoyed much more…maybe third times a charm…

Cute short story but kinda ended abruptly to me. I also wish I had more background information on their relationship before because this is essentially a second chance romance. Still a good read and I wish I could find me a Grant.

This book was enjoyable for the holiday season!

The FMC sort of got on my nerves with the self sabotage! I was trying to have patience with her but she was acting like a 15 year old! Because she got on my nerves, I wish I were able to get the MMC’s perspective as it was told in 3rd person. I couldn’t really connect with him how I can connect with other MMC’s in romance books.

Anyway, it was cute and I am looking forward to reading The Kiss Countdown by the author!!

Eve & Grant

This is such a cute Christmas romance novella.

It’s a story about grief, hope, love, acceptance and miracles.

Eve is struggling, the past year has delivered a lot of blows to her but also two little bundles of Joy thanks to her twin sister.
She found out her boyfriend was cheating on her, her dad died and all her dreams of having a family slowly faded. Then she ruined her friendship by kissing him.

Grant has been chasing Eve from the moment they first met. They became fast friends but that all fell apart after he told Eve, her boyfriend was cheating on her… oh and they shared a kiss.

I liked their journey and Eve finally processing her dad’s death and letting her walls down. Grant was gentle and a constant, he just wanted to share her space and love her. Grant is good for Eve. He shows her that she’s worth the wait, worth the pain, worthy of a deep love constantly. I think she needed that especially since she always put everyone else’s needs before her own.

There was a lot going on with her sister and the babies but it showed how deep Eve loved the ones around her. She would do anything to make sure everything is perfect for when they came home.

This is an enjoyable Christmas novella. It’s easy to read and gives you all the festive vibes.

Only thing that i came across that took me out of the story was the wrong characters name was used at one point and one scene was a bit repetitive. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it.

Tis the Season!! I’ve kicked off my holiday reading with theee most perfect book! (I paired it with my favorite Christmas song of all time)

NITCP was EVERYTHING I seek in a Christmas read! Great wintry setting (here in TX), Christmas tradition, charming characters, great acts of kindness, delicious foods and the love of family! Christmas perfection!!

My favorite scenes were Eve losing herself in the joy of ice skating, Eve and Grant making cookies, Grant eating all the sweets and his hilarious remarks, the carolers, Grant sneaking kisses, Eve and Ivy’s twin gab sessions and Ms. Thomas. TBH, every page was seeping in the magic of all the things I love about the holidays!

This book was only 155 pages, which made for a quick read, but it was full of heart and the spirit of the holidays. I often wonder when reading romance, what happened to sweet kisses? Deep conversations? Hand holding and sweet gestures? Well, Etta brought it all here! Their connection was so smooth, simple and serene.

I loved all of the characters and related to them so much. From Ivy’s unexpected delivery to Eve’s strict reliance on perfectly laid plans. Grant was a breath of fresh air and exactly what Eve needed to remind her to make time for joy in her life.

I couldn’t love this book more! I laughed so much and cried so much. It was so beautiful and heartwarming! I’m now ready for the holidays!

Not In The Christmas Plan by Etta Easton was one of those stories where the heart does the heavy lifting. I won’t even lie Eve worked my nerves. Her need for control, the constant pushback, the bickering… whew lawdy. But once you sit with her story, it clicks. Eve isn’t cold she’s grieving. Grief doesn’t clock out when the calendar changes. She’s mourning a future she thought she’d have after betrayal from a cheating ex and the sudden loss of her father and sometimes it’s easier to cling to plans than face uncertainty.

Grant was patience personified. He showed up softly, consistently and with intention, even when Eve made it hard. She pushed him away because believing in a future felt more terrifying than staying stuck in the past. Listen… I hate that it took that man falling off a roof to crack her heart open but by any means necessary, right?

This story beautifully shows how fear and grief can paralyze you but love steady, kind and persistent can still break through. It’s tender, frustrating, hopeful and very much a reminder that the best things in life rarely go according to plan… especially at Christmas.

This book had a cozy, Hallmark-style vibe that I really enjoyed. I loved the illustrations and how vividly I could visualize the characters and each scene—they truly brought the story to life. The entire time I was reading, I could smell fresh baked cookies! I found Eve a bit insufferable at times, which affected my overall enjoyment. However, I will say the deeper I got into this read, the more relatable and understanding her character became. I appreciated how grief was carried throughout the storyline, adding emotional depth and realism for the reader. All of the references throughout this story made me feel warm and reminded me of my own holiday traditions and favorite things growing up! As much as I wanted to love this book, it ended up being more of a like for me. However, I think it's worth the read and would still recommend it to those who enjoy holiday cozy, emotionally layered stories!

This was a sweet and wholesome holiday story. It tackled many things like family bonds, grief, NICU stays, self sabotage and finding love. The seasonal setting and atmosphere of the book screamed Christmas in the best way. Christmas markets, ice skating, carolers, Christmas traditions like baking, movies, and pajamas, and we can’t forget the cocoa. I enjoyed Grant and his steady presence. While I completely understood why Eve acted and thought the way she did, she unfortunately came across as a teenager instead of this super attorney everyone says she is. I will say her apology, self reflection and making a grand gesture won me over. I enjoyed the storyline and its flow. Although this book was meant to be short, I do wish there had been a little epilogue. Otherwise, lots of fun Christmas vibes over here.

A Christmastime novella about letting love in.

Eve (28) is a family lawyer who knows the inconvenience of messy emotions and the pain of grief. She has one focus: make sure her twin sister has a healthy pregnancy, safe delivery, and happy first Christmas after the unexpected loss of their dad.

Grant (28ish) is the BFF of her brother-in-law who she’s been avoiding ever since they had one steamy kiss.

Now her twin sister is in early labor, so these two are left to prep the house for babies and Christmas. Will staying under one roof with a long To Do List bring them closer together?

Wholesome and cute

Gave 4 stars but it's more a 3.5 for me.

Not in the Christmas plan is sweet and wholesome. Love dynamic between the sisters, the copy & paste inside joke had me smiling from ear to ear. I liked Grant's character a lot but I struggled with Eve.

I get that she's supposed to be a reluctant, type A character but it honestly made her unlikable for me. I don't feel like her reactions to things made sense.

The story overall was nice enough but it was very low stakes, which made the 150 pages feel longer. It's already a novella, it could have sat around 100 pages and I think that pacing would have been more enjoyable for me.

Adorable

This book was not in my Christmas plan, but wow am I glad I picked it up 🥹🎄
Super cute, super cozy, and perfect for curling up with a blanket and a warm drink.
I loved the holiday vibes, the chemistry, and the way the story felt light, sweet, and easy to fall into—exactly what I want from a festive romance. The characters were fun and charming, and I found myself smiling through so many moments.
Why 4 stars instead of 5? Just needed a tiny bit more depth, but honestly… the vibes were immaculate ✨

A feel-good, heartwarming holiday novella featuring Eve, a control freak lawyer who is determined to make this Christmas perfect for her twin sister who goes into labor during Thanksgiving dinner. Stuck at home with her brother-in-law, Grant, the two are forced to work together decorating the house, getting a tree and more. While Eve fights her feelings for Grant, he continues to try to break down her walls. Sweet with all the Hallmark Holiday movie vibes you could ask for. I gobbled it up and was left with a smile on my face at the end.

🎄Oh my goodness!!! This book was sweet, warm and cozy just like a nice cup of cocoa with marshmallows!

✨ I loved “Not The Holiday Plan” so much! This was a good Christmas- frienamies-to-lovers story.

🎀 This book has sooo much heart packed in! I definitely felt emotionally invested with the characters in a short period of time.

☕ I love Etta Eason writing! She balances laugh-out-loud moments with sentimental ones so effortlessly. She made each character shine in their own way in this story.

⛄This is an awesome read for the holiday season! 5 stars!
