*Spoilers*

I only read Dark Crime by Christine Feehan and I really liked it. In Dark Crime we meet two new people. Maksim Volkov is an ancient Carpathian who works with Tariq Asenguard. Blaze is his lifemate. Her father has been murdered. The murderers took their time breaking every bone in his body and tossed his dead body at Blaze's feet. She is going to kill everyone of them. Even if she has to die doing it. When she calls a business man that offered her father help, to tell him that she plans to kill the four men that murdered her father and that if she died, she was leaving her bar to him she didn't know it but that call changed everything. The man on the other line was her lifemate. I really liked both Maksim and Blaze. There was a lot going on in this book. A lot of sex too for a smaller book it was full of passion. I liked that we get to meet the new ancient that they save at the end of the book name Val. He was held prisoner for years, and tortured near death. I really want him to get a book soon. I also really liked the other plot around Blaze's sister(not blood sister) Emeline. I read on CF website that Emeline's book is coming soon and I can't wait!!!

I am not a fan of anthologies but I wanted to read Dark Crime by Christine Feehan – that’s the only story I read.

This is the 27th book in the Dark Saga Series, which is one of my favorite PNR series.

The story begins with the heroine, Blaze, going full blast to kill her father’s murderers and from there onwards, it just continues in the most fast-paced way ever. It’s like Speed…nonstop!!

Maksim Volkov, an ancient Carpathian vampire has finally found his lifemate in Blaze.

So he helps Blaze find her father’s killers, but before that?????
 photo tumblr_inline_n8fcugUqBZ1sohk3w_zpszsiaufqb.gif
They have sex…..and then some more sex…and more sex….more sex……….and then off they go on the trail of the evil Malikov vampires, who have set up shop in Chicago, Illinois.

In between, we get to meet some new characters…Emmeline, Blaze’s best friend and psychic, like Blaze, Tariq, Lojos, Thomas, Mataias and rescue a Carpathian male who has been held prisoner and tortured by the evil vampires for years…..

I wasn’t sure about this story until the last couple of chapters, where we get a bit of Carpathian history, which was the best part of the book……..

Everything happened pretty fast in the just under 200 pages……which I felt, too many were used up for the endless sex and sex……and gosh….only Christine Feehan uses words like “channel” and “shaft”….

The ending isn’t exactly a cliffhanger but it does leave it open for the next books on some of the characters who made appearances here.

I am waiting for Dark Ghost next…hopefully it’s going to be a good one!!!!

I read this several months ago and as I'm reading an arc that links to these characters thought it about time to get my thoughts down.
Dark Crime
It's very hard to keep readers engaged as a series gets longer and it's a trap that many authors fall into. What worked so well in the beginning can become stale and readers constantly demand to be surprised . Ms Feehans Dark series has been such an interesting one full of intense emotions, beautiful narrative and incendiary heat. This story is shorter than most and yet is still full of passion and a few surprises and of course there's that little thing of claiming a life mate!
I really liked the beginning of this story and felt so much empathy for the heroine Blaze whose life has been brutally changed forever. She deals with her grief by taking control of her own destiny but a chance call to a stranger sees yet another rock thrown her way and this time it's a landslide ! The male who answers her call is Maksim and he's definitely not human he is Carpathian and now Blaze has fallen into his world and there's no way Maksim will ever let her leave .
Ms Feehan has somehow stepped away from her previous style and this felt far more modern with a fresh twist . If honest at first I didn't realise it was a Carpathian story and the plot was fuelled by unexpected alliances . Die hard fans will enjoy this but I think those who perhaps felt jaded might also see a fresh approach to tempt them back. I'm happy to report the story was not bogged down by excessive chanting ( which many readers find repetitive ) and as this story arc continues I know I will be back for more.
Dead by Twilight
A welcome return to this authors work for me and I'm still loving her take on vampire lore. I loved the idea that a reluctant vampire was refusing to be a predator and in point of fact is actually working in law enforcement to bring down the bad guys . Just how Chloe can do her job without revealing her secret is a mystery to me but until pushed to work with Shep she was doing an admirable job of concealing her darker nature. It's an entertaining story with fun, quirky interactions but there's the underlying sense of malice and danger that kept me turning the pages. There is chemistry between the couple but it's perhaps not as fiery as I wanted. Overall though I enjoyed this short story which kind of acts as a precursor for what's to come next .
Cimarron Spirit
This is quite a short read and it's by an author who is completely new to me. Our heroine is Annie an archeologist who whilst investigating ruins stumbles upon the find of the century , a vampire! Rafael de la Vega has waited a long time for someone to ease his lonely undead life and although at first he wants nothing more than to see the back of the meddling woman as he gets to know more about Annie it's clear that what they both feel could be so much more than mere attraction.
Now nothing is ever that simple and if it was where would the story be? You see Annie is caught up in the midst of the dreaded triangle as Brett who owns the land she digs on has proposed to her but is it love or just convenience ? Annie proudly proclaims the she is " her own woman " but can she make the right choice for her? A life with a family in the sun or whatever a vampire can offer and then there's the slight problem of Rafaels past and it's a lot closer than Annie realises!
I must point out that I did feel this was very reminiscent of Ms Feehans work with similar names used and even shifting. I wonder if this was written possibly as a homage or even as fan fiction ? Either way it did for this reader end a touch abruptly and I would have liked a little bit more but as a quick read to while away an hour or so it hit the spot perfectly
I was gifted a copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Ok I'll start by saying the my rating is only for Dark Crime by Christine Feehan. I'm not sure if I'll read the other stories in this one since I only picked it up for Dark Crime and the others ones don't really grab my interest. I'll update my review if I do decide to.

So, Dark Crime, I have to say you pleasantly surprised me with this one Christine Feehan. This is probably the most I've enjoyed a Dark book in awhile. After more then 25 books its hard not feel that the books are a bit repetitive. This one though is like a breath of fresh air. The writing felt like it was more modern, and the story line was different and exciting without losing all the awesome parts we love about these books. We still have a major alpha male who will protect his lifemate at all costs, but I also felt like Maksim was edgier and more modern thinking then most of the other heroes in this series. He completely accepted Blaze for the warrior she was and believed in her right from the start. It was a relief because in the past the women who wanted to fight beside their men in this series had to fight tooth and nail to be able too. I have to say if this is what the rest of the books will be like then I have a new excitement to read them, I'm especially looking forward to Emeline's story which I hope will be told soon. It seemed like she was setting her up to get her own book, so I'm crossing my fingers. Looking forward to the next book in September to see if this is the direction the rest of the series is going to take!

Just for the record I only read Dark Crime by Christine Feehan. I've been a huge fan of the Dark series for so long my only interest was in that story, so onto the review. Notice I've given this three stars... yes I was slightly disappointed, the author can't please everyone. For starters Blazes comes across as strong independent woman, she has a plan, a single minded focus and is more then ready to take action, hence where my problem begins. Maksim the Carpathian jackass settles into her life, then the dictation begins. Sure...sure it comes off as subtle, you know lying by omission, withholding facts, binds her spirit to his even then doesn't give the heads up as to what is going on and Blazes is okay with this? I kept waiting for the badass female to bust a move, go all Jackie Chan. But no she thinks with her vagina as if that doesn't get a lot of us women into trouble and he does whatever the hell he wants. Call me crazy (okay Elfina your ass is crazy) but when a man right from the get go becomes all possessive, handsy and outright dictating, do we ever listen? Hell to fucking no! So why in tarnations is this character so passive? I expected more of a fight from her, so yeah she lost major brownie points. So that's it, now I'm onto the next in the sequel...Enjoy!

Me gusto mucho.

Oh, I love a good vampire romance…

And this anthology has three of them! While very different, the tone and flavor share a similar theme; humans and vampires have an uneasy and varied relationship. I pounced on this set for the opportunity to read another Dark story by one of my favorite paranormal authors, as well as the chance to read a vamp story by authors I knew but hadn’t realized they wrote such books.

Dark Crime by Christine Feehan

Blaze loved her father and her sister-by-choice, Emeline. When she lost her beloved Dad, she could only focus on her need for revenge, at any cost. She knew about Maksim but had no idea how profoundly he was going to affect her life as he and his family joined hers to find justice…

If you have read any of the previous books in the Dark series, the Carpathian story is not a new one. What I found refreshing was the retelling and uniqueness of their romance while still artfully folding it into the larger story. The intensity between the two cannot be denied and the action is not for the faint-hearted. A bloody good story! ~ 4 stars

Dead by Twilight by Maggie Shayne

Is your local policeman a member of the paranormal squad? Does she wear a tiara on her off time? The irony of working as a police officer, while routinely dispatching the evil of her kind, was not lost on Chloe. Shepherd didn’t know she was a vamp when she saved him from what he thought was a vampire attack. Rubbing each other the wrong way from the get go, that doesn’t stop them working well together when the two team up in a newly formed vamp task force. The question would become, how long would they resist each other and, oh, by the way, Chloe is a vampire as well…

This novella has all the elements of a satisfying paranormal story – action, intrigue, humor and, of course, love. 3.5 stars

Cimarron Spirit by Lori Herter

This novella centers around Annie, an archaeologist, working on a site which just happens to be the long-time home of a local vampire. Supported by a local resident, along with his daughter, Annie is torn between the life she always thought she would have and a life that she could not have envisioned but felt she couldn’t live without. Rafael is irresistible but that doesn’t make the decision any higher especially when it’s not just the two of them involved.

This one is short but sweet! ~ 3 stars

Overall, I was not disappointed in the blood-letting, the adventure or the romance in these very different but entertaining stories. ~ Diane, 4 overall stars

SENSUAL, EROTIC AND ACTION PACKED!!

This review is for "Dark Crime" by Christine Feehan only. I am not interested in reading the other short stories. That being said, Dark Crime has a bit of a twist too it. Taken place in the U.S, I think I was a bit confused at first becasue initially I though this was going to be Tariq Asenguard's story. It wasn't it was an unfamiliar character to the Dark series Maksim Volkov and his newly found Lifemate Blaze. Dark Crime has that gangster storyline. With the gangsters killing people to take over there property. This happens to Blaze. Her father was viciously beaten and tortured to death by what appears to be a gang of thugs The Hallahan Brothers. The leader of the gang is the mysterious Reginald Coonan. Readers of the Dark series will understand whats going on right away. I am not sure that people who haven't read the Dark series will get whats really happening until further in the story. Basically the last we heard of Tariq, and the triplet brothers Mathais, Tomas and Lojos was back in the Carpathian Mountain. They have been sent to find any women on the list of Physics that hey have.Women with Psychic gifts can be converted into Lifemate's to a Carpathian without turning them vampire., but she must be the other half of the Carpathians males soul the one chosen for him for all time. Maksim finds his lifemate in Blaze and they all set out to destroy the Hallahan brothers and the the leader Reginald Coonan. There is lots of action, fight scenes. I didn't like the fact that the Carpathians just don't seem to be as smart or as strong as the Vampire. They take quite the beating before they defeat the Master Vampire and his Puppets. The Romance between Maksim and Blaze is very erotic as all Carpathian and Lifemate romances are. There is another character I am interested in learning more about. She is a Psychic Emeline Sanchez and has grown up with Blaze like a sister. I hope we find out who her Lifemate is in future books. The story is good enough for a Short story if you are a fan of the Dark series I would recommend you read it. If not I am just not sure its a Stand Alone, to many important facts are missing. About who and what the Carpathians are and whats going on in there immortal world. I would Highly Recommend you read the entire Dark series. its a Great Series 26 books spanning about 16 years. I read them as soon as they are released an re read them once a year.

I only read Dark Crime by Christine Feehan. I am so glad that the Carpathian plot settings are out of the jungle and thankfully I didn't have to read dozens of pages about attacking bugs. But Feehan still has a problem with giving her heroines decent names. This one was Blaze. I kept thinking of a horse. C'mon Christine....there are hundreds of good feminine names you can give your heroines. Just stop with these ridiculous heroine names that I wouldn't even give a dog. It takes away from the plot when the reader is distracted by your silliness.

I'm delighted that Feehan has finally decided to pursue the story arc about the physic women who are being hunted by both vampires and hunters. She opened this possibility up like 10 books ago, put Andre on the case then dropped the story arc and went off to play in the jungle, dragging her readers through bug hell. I felt as though the meat of the story was written previously. It read like the early Carpathian books. No bugs and no endless magical chants. There was action and suspense. I was loving it.

It was clear that a few sex scenes were added. Maybe to increase page count, I don't know. The long numerous sex scenes didn't add to the story, they were a distraction and I ended up paging forward to get back to the main plot. Authors take note...throwing in an extra sex scene or three does not always make your story better.

I keep telling myself that I'm done, done, done with anything Carpathian then I give in to the hope that maybe this time Feehan has written something great that will make me feel like I did when reading the first 10 books of the series. This one got me close to that feeling and I'm glad I gave in to temptation and read it.

Ms Feehan...give us a few books set back in civilization and get rid of those shards of Xavier.......it's just dumb. Xavier is dead, leave him dead. Cut back on the bugs and chants and most of all please stop giving your heroines bizarre names. Really, who would name a child Blaze?

This could have easily been a 4.5 read for me. Added to my favs and re-read pile but honestly the numerous lengthy out of place sex scenes and having to constantly read the name 'Blaze' was enough to drop it back to 3.75.

This review was originally posted on Cocktails and Books

Overall, this was a fun set to read. All of the stories involve vampires, so you get to stretch the imagination a little bit. Here are brief reviews of each story:

Dark Crime – 3.5 Cocktails

By far the longest of the stories in the collection, it is pretty close to a full length novel. I have not read the other books in the series this is a part of, but that was not a hindrance to enjoying this one. Dark Crime has an interesting concept and great characters. It also has a lot of sexy time, almost too much really, even though it did help cement the bond between the two main characters. My one complaint about the sexy time was that some of it felt repetitive, especially the wording chosen.

Dead by Twilight – 3.5 Cocktails

A novella that is really a lot of fun. Chloe is a completely different type of vampire and her story is an interesting twist to typical vampire stories – definitely worth checking out. There is some romance, but very little sexy time. I would have liked to have seen more of Chloe and Shep together.

Cimarron Spirit – 3

A sweet novella, but everything seemed a bit stiff. The way things were set up, you never really believed that Annie would choose Brent over Rafael, so it was hard to invest in parts of the story.

Wow, What a great original anthology! Loved the DARK Series story from Christine that was almost half the book, Fell in love with Maggie and NEED to know more about her character Chloe added her to al my contact lists. Lori was a great final story but not the best. But what a listing to write a original anthology with. Think she did a OK job but of course hard to compete. I was not triggered to read more from her now but who knows ... .

Dark crime is a must read before Dark Carousel. I loved Blaze. Feehan doesn't have many badass females in her stories and majority of the most notable ones have been getting a novella instead of complete book. The events and characters in this story are crucial to understanding the Dark Carousel and the books that will follow.

This review is only based on the story by Christine Feehan.

I liked Blaze, but thought that things progressed too quickly with Maksim. There was no build up, just let me help you, you are my lifemate, I claim you. What save this story for me was the action with Emmaline and the kids. It was interesting to see how the vampires have evolved and are trying to be more like they were before they went evil. I hope we get a book with Emmaline and how she finds a lifemate within the Carpathians.

¡Feliz lectura!

“Dark Crime” by Christine Feehan

In book 23.5 of the Dark/Carpathian series, Blaze McGuire is full of rage and grief. Two rival mob factions have moved into her city, which is unnamed, and one of the groups—the Hallahan brothers—murdered her father. Blaze intends to kill the murderers and suspects she’ll die in the process. Signing over the rights to her family’s business to the rival gang, she expects them to carry out her mission to destroy the Hallahan brothers if she fails, but she never expected the mobster she spoke with on the phone to race down to the bar and save her life.
Maksim Volkov and his fellow Carpathian warrior Tariq are presenting themselves as mobsters and even opened a nightclub, but their main focus is hunting down vampires in the city. They haven’t realized, however, how deeply the vampires have integrated themselves into human society. Maksim knows Blaze is his lifemate as soon as he hears her voice. She’s a warrior, like him, trained to protect the ones she loves. She dead-set on revenge, and Maksim can do no other but help her achieve her goal.
Blaze and Maksim’s relationship develops fast. They’re likable characters. He’s understanding of her warrior spirit and she’s accepting of his protective nature. As always in this series, each heroine is more gorgeous than the last. Since repetition and multiple sex scenes stretch out the word count, this novella is the longest in the anthology. Head hopping and a few inconsistencies took me out of the story, but I liked the gritty urban setting and the overall narrative.

“Dead by Twilight” by Maggie Shayne

In this Wings in the Night: Reborn novella, book 3.5, city cop and vampire Chloe Madison is hunting down a powerful vampire that’s killing innocent human men. Believing she’s finally found the bloodsucker, she follows the lady vamp and her sexy victim to a graveyard. Turns out, the bloodsucker is just a human playing dress up and the vic is actually a state inspector who’s seriously pissed at Chloe for blowing his cover.
Inspector Shepard Daniels doesn’t want to team up with Chloe after his boss forms the new Vampire Crimes Unit, but he can’t deny her skill and knowledge when it comes to all-things vampire. Two years earlier, the world found out that vampires are real, but Shep doesn’t believe vamps and humans can co-exist. While investigating the murders, they check out a vampire-themed D/s club and the sexual tension between them soon ignites.
Chloe and Shep are awesome! She’s feisty and pretends to be human, he’s protective and bigoted against vampires, but they work great together. They have a HFN ending, but it’s easy to see the HEA coming up.
The story is told in first person POV, from Chloe’s perspective only, but I really would’ve liked some scenes from Shep. Still, I loved this novella. It’s my favorite in the antho.

“Cimarron Spirit” by Lori Herter

Archaeologist and professor Annie Carmichael is dating Brent, a wealthy cattle rancher, and excavating Anasazi ruins on his property. Though she feels comfortable with Brent and can see an easy future with him and his daughter, she secretly longs for passion and adventure.
Vampire and horse rancher Rafael de la Vega believes the ruins belong to him. After years of loneliness, he needs someone in his life, but his previous relationships with women ended badly. While trying to scare off the invading archaeologist, he realizes Annie is his soul mate and sets out to seduce her.
Annie and Rafael are interesting characters. The story is told predominately from Annie’s perspective, but there are a few scenes in Rafael’s POV. Their relationship bloomed fast and there was insta-love on his part.
There are a few unanswered questions. Will Annie be able to continue excavating the ruins since she chose Rafael over Brent? Will Rafael still have access to the kiva (an Anasazi ceremonial chamber and his preferred resting place) after the excavation team takes over?
Anyway, I really enjoyed this story and would like to read more of Ms. Herter’s work.
4 Stars

I love reading vampire books because each author changes the vampire mythos with new twists, but keeps the basic facts the same. I definitely recommend this anthology.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Vivacious Valkyrie and Pack Alpha - Marta & Chelle:

Dark Crime by Christine Feehan (Marta):

It's very hard to keep readers engaged as a series gets longer and it's a trap that many authors fall into. What worked so well in the beginning can become stale and readers constantly demand to be surprised. Ms. Feehan's Dark series has been such an interesting one full of intense emotions, beautiful narrative and incendiary heat. This story is shorter than most and yet is still full of passion and a few surprises and, of course, there's that little thing of claiming a life mate!

I really liked the beginning of this story and felt so much empathy for the heroine Blaze, whose life has been brutally changed forever. She deals with her grief by taking control of her own destiny, but a chance call to a stranger sees yet another rock thrown her way and this time it's a landslide ! The male who answers her call is Maksim and he's definitely not human he us Carpathian and now Blaze has fallen into his world and there's no way Maksim will ever let her leave.

Ms Feehan has somehow stepped away from her previous style and this felt far more modern with a fresh twist. If honest at first I didn't realise it was a Carpathian story and the plot was fuelled by unexpected alliances. Diehard fans will enjoy this but I think those who perhaps felt jaded might also see a fresh approach to tempt them back. I'm happy to report the story was not bogged down by excessive chanting (which many readers find repetitive) and as this story arc continues I know I wil be back for more!

Dead by Twilight by Maggie Shayne (Chelle):

I've been a fan of the Wings in the Night series since book #1, continuing with Wings in the Night: Reborn and Twilight Guardians this last year. I can, without a doubt, say that this was one of my favorite Wings in the Night tales, to date.

Maggie brings us another of her feisty, fiery, independent heroines with Chloe, and I found myself comparing her a bit to Rachel de Luca from Maggie's Brown & de Luca stories. She's just a heroine you love to love and her interaction with the hero was witty, sexy, and full of intrigue.

Overall, the story was smart, fun, and gripping. I am so, SO excited Wings in the Night is back and properly reborn! :)

Cimarron Spirit by Lori Herter (Marta):

This is quite a short read and it's by an author who is completely new to me. Our heroine is Annie an archeologist who, whilst investigating ruins, stumbles upon the find of the century, a vampire! Rafael de la Vega waited a long time for someone to ease his lonely undead life and although at first he wants nothing more than to see the back of the meddling woman as he gets to know more about Annie it's clear that what they both feel could be so much more than mere attraction.

Now nothing is ever that simple and if it was where would the story be? You see Annie is caught up in the midst of the dreaded triangle as Brett, who owns the land she digs on has proposed to her but is it love or just convenience ? Annie proudly proclaims the she is " her own woman " but can she make the right choice for her? A life with a family in the sun or whatever a vampire can offer and then there's the slight problem of Rafaels past and it's a lot closer than Annie realises!

I must point out that I did feel this was very reminiscent of Ms Feehan's work with similar names used and even shifting. I wonder if this was written possibly as a homage or even as fan fiction? Either way it did for this reader end a touch abruptly and I would have liked just a little more but as a quick read to while away an hour it hit the spot perfectly.

OVERALL:
We would recommend this anthology, especially for fans of the authors' series, those who discovered Christine and Maggie's work by first reading Lori Herter, and, of course, any fan of vampire fiction.
