The Price Of Silence. A dark psychological college romance

Rate this book
Zain has a plan, a long-game strategy that requires one perfect, unwitting Vesper. Her world is a beautifully fragile deception, and he’s the one waiting to watch it burn. He is a monster, a stalker in the shadows, yet the thought of leading her from her safe, gilded cage doesn't stir guilt—only a possessive kind of heat and sick desire for vengeance. He needs her. And what Zain needs, he takes.

Vesper knows the rules, but this dark stranger is the dangerous exception. He is a presence that stalks her days and consumes her nights. Every glance is a warning, a threat to the perfectly crafted life her parents instilled in her. She should run. She can see the red flags that scream danger, but every time she runs away, his shadow pulls her back in. There’s a delicious terror in his intensity, a promise of freedom in his reckless behavior and she's craving a taste.

He’s not just stalking her; he’s waiting for the perfect moment to reveal the truth.
His secret will shatter her cage, and her life, forever.

The Price Of Silence is a dark, psychological, college romance with academia vibes. This book is intended for 18+. Please read the triggers before diving in! Mental health matters!

I simply loved it. At first seems to be very same ol’ college story with the bad boy and sweet innocent girl. Rich parents, fancy school but not everything is as beautiful and sweet as it seems. Looks like rich parents are the nasty ones and no girl is safe. Mmc is to die for, let me tell you this, he just wanted to be loved but they broke him.
Oh dear lord what a twist. Or should I say twists at the end. I was picking up my jaw of the floor. A lot of triggers so please check because there’s a lot of crazy play.
Have fun reading. Highly recommend

make sure you check your triggers on this one and take them seriously this is darkkkk!!!

Zain is the closet thing to the devil on earth to me..lol

Zain is a unhinged physiological mess and he is obsessed with vesper...
even though Vesper knows how dark, twisted and dangerous zain is he starts to become her obsession too even with all that she knows.
there are some twists that even the characters dont see coming and I didn't either.

this book was well written there were some typos but that is to be expected...I was lucky to have received this as an arc...and vara firestar has came to the top of my authors list and fast...she knows how to right dark and she excutes it..

The Price of Silence hooked me fast. Vara Firestar wastes zero time and drops you straight into the drama, the secrets, and the “oh absolutely not” moments. The tension stays high, the characters stay messy in the best way, and the plot moves like it’s got somewhere to be.

It’s sharp, addictive, and gives just enough chaos to keep you flipping pages. If you like secrets, stakes, and a main character who refuses to play nice, this one delivers.

Prepare yourself, because Zain is not a character you casually meet—you survive him. I went into this book thinking I understood what “dark” meant in dark romance, and Zain quickly proved me wrong. He’s brutal, calculating, completely unrepentant, and honestly a little terrifying. Yet somehow, despite how morally questionable he is, I couldn’t stop reading about him. His intensity pulls you in whether you’re ready for it or not.

Vesper sits at the center of his obsession, though she has no idea how long she’s been under his watch. For years, Zain has been silently orbiting her world, and when their paths finally collide, things spiral in ways that constantly push the limits of what feels acceptable. Several moments had me genuinely questioning my own reading preferences… but at the same time, that’s exactly the kind of chaos dark romance readers sign up for.

This story is the first installment in the Veiled Sinners duet, and it absolutely sets the tone for the madness ahead. Zain begins with revenge on his mind, but somewhere along the way his focus shifts completely to Vesper. What starts as a mission quickly turns into something far more dangerous: obsession. Their dynamic is intense, disturbing, and impossible to look away from.

The book doesn’t shy away from heavy themes, so checking the trigger warnings beforehand is definitely a good idea. If you’re someone who appreciates knowing what emotional territory you’re stepping into, this one lays it out clearly. For readers who love extremely dark romances that lean fully into morally gray—or outright villainous—main characters, this story delivers exactly that.

Just when you think Zain has reached peak insanity, he manages to go even further. His actions grow increasingly extreme, yet the story somehow makes you understand the twisted logic driving him. It’s wild, chaotic, and completely unhinged in a way that keeps the pages turning.

Clara and Kieran also play important roles in the story, adding depth and additional tension to the narrative. Their presence enriches the plot, especially as certain truths begin to surface toward the end. And those late-book revelations? I genuinely did not see them coming, but they made the ending hit even harder.

If you enjoy dark romance that fully commits to the darkness—with a main character who is obsessive, dangerous, and borderline psychotic—this book will absolutely be your kind of ride.

And now I’m left with two very urgent thoughts: I need the next part of the Veiled Sinners duet immediately, and I’m desperately hoping Clara’s story is coming soon because I’m not ready to leave this chaotic world behind.

Wow. I had to sit with this one before I could even begin to put my thoughts into words. This book is a ride—it’s dark, unsettling, and disturbing. Zain is… a lot. Psychotic, obsessive, unhinged, and driven by a vengeance that borders on feral. Yet his schizophrenia adds a layer of tragic complexity that makes his behavior horrifying but strangely understandable. His fixation on Vesper—a sheltered, good girl who has no idea she’s been stalked for years—creates a tension that never lets up.

The character work in this story is phenomenal. Every time I thought Zain couldn’t possibly spiral any further, the author proved me wrong. His attempts to manage the voices in his head are oddly admirable, even as he crosses line after line. Vesper’s own growing addiction to him, despite knowing how dangerous and sick he is, adds another layer of emotional chaos. And the supporting cast—Kieran and Clara—rounds out the story beautifully. Their roles become especially impactful toward the end, when twists even Zain doesn’t see coming send him, and the reader, for a loop.

Make no mistake: this is a dark romance. Love does not heal all here, and Zain is absolutely not a Prince Charming. The triggers are real, and readers should take them seriously.

All that said… I devoured this book in a single afternoon. I couldn’t put it down, and now I’m counting the days until book two.

‼️ PLEASE CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS‼️

🗡️ Mental Health
🗡️ Forced Marriage
🗡️ Blood Play

“To all of us mentally unhinged ladies and gents who love a sick, fucked-up character. And to those who love a mile-long trigger list with endless possibilities, this is all for you.”

Vesper has always been kept in a pretty cage by her father, away from anything and anyone. That was until she meets Zain.

“Hello, little songbird, won’t you sing for me?.”

Zain is fighting his demons that are constantly telling him to claim, take, and destroy. He wants revenge. He wants what was supposed to be his and he’s gonna get that no matter what. Vesper? That’s his key.

“Follow me into the darkness, Vesper. Into the abysmal depths of hell. Release me from the prison of my mind.”

Unhinged from the get go! A taste of freedom and learning her deepest desires, Vesper is pulled to Zain like a magnet. Zain is always lurking, waiting for his opportunity to hunt, what he didn’t take into account, was feeling something for his prey. I did get the same vibes as the Little Stranger with the end half of the book with a certain scene also but not in a bad way! There’s a lot of trigger warnings in this book so please do read before starting!

🩸 The Price Of Silence by Vara Firestar 🩸

“I can destroy your demons, but you don’t want that. What you need is for me to join you in your insanity.”

INSANITY. pure insanity. that’s what this book is, and yet, i devoured it.

if you are looking for a DARK romance with lots of blood and unhinged content, this is for you! if you are looking for a gentle MMC who will cuddle the FMC and shower her with affection- this ain’t it.

ahhhh the psychopath and the songbird. Zain, the chaotic devil. Vesper, the pure angel.. until Zain gets his hands on her. he’s psychotic, but i have to admit that by the end of the book, i sorta felt for him lol (why do i always try to justify the actions of these morally black characters???). he went through some shit!! you try hearing voices all the time that are telling you to do the most violent, awful things. im sure it would lead anyone to madness.

poor Vesper is secretly almost as messed up as he is, we just don’t realize it until closer to the end of the book. curious to see how the next book goes 👀 this one def had a twist I wasn’t expecting.

My brain is all over the place. Just when I think, the story goes this way. It doesn't. And when I think. Is it going this way? No, it doesn't.

I could not put the book down. I want to know, where the story goes. How is it going to end.

I didn't know what to think of Zain. He is stalking Vesper. Because he has plans for her. Then there are the voices in his head. His demons.

Slowly he gets his hands on Vesper. Dragging her further in his darkness.

Mean while, Vesper, trying to be the good girl. The way she has been raised by her parents.

But something inside of her. Is attractite to Zain. Even when she doesn't wants to. She keeps drawing to Zain. Knowing he will hurt her.

When Zain's plans is going to plan. Something is taken it of course.

He finds out, it involves Vesper. Can he work out his plan? Is Vesper going to help him?

I loved the writing and the mindtwists. The way they are getting you out of balance. But also want to keep reading. Wanting to know, what is going to happen. How is it going to end. Meanwhile screaming what?

Before reading this book. I would advice to read the trigger warnings.

It ruined me, in the best way.

Buckle up, I’m not sure if you’re ready for Zain. I definitely wasn’t. He’s demented, unapologetic, ruthless, intense but his character still drew me in. Vesper is his target, though she doesn’t realize he’s been watching her for years. Lots of scenes that made me question my morals but ultimately it’s what I’m here for!!!! Clara and Kieran are supporting characters that add to the story. Revelations towards the end of the book were not what I expected but damn they were amazing! I’m going to highly recommend reading this if you want a truly unhinged MMC.

I did receive an ARC for my honest opinion. 5 stars are hard to come by in my opinion but this book deserved all 5.

I have nothing but positives to say about this book. I was given the chance to ARC read and OMG!!! Every free moment I had was spent reading this psychological dark romance. Starting off with following Zain and his twisted antics, to Vesper and her sweet, shy innocent persona. Vesper was always in his eye sights from when she started at Grimshaw Academy, to how their connection to one another grew in dark and twisted ways. I have to say that I did not expect this to end the way it did at all. Definitely kept me on my toes!! Vara did it again with her amazing writing!!

WOW!!! When I finished this, I had no words! I was definitely NOT ready for the darkness in this book.

Zain is not your ordinary college guy, who swoons you and sweeps you off your feet. He is very controlling and unhinged, to say the least.

Vesper is your typical, quiet college girl with goals. Until she meets Zain.

This story takes you so many places, and is so dark, yet so exciting. And when you think you know, you really have absolutely no clue!!
Quite a few triggers in this book, be sure to read them. Unless you fit in with the rest of us crazies who love it!

This was a pitch black read so please please check the trigger warnings. Your mental health is important!

The mmc is as dark as they come and I really enjoyed the ride! Lots of twists and turns at the end. You think you know what’s going on but you really don’t! Curious to see where she takes the story in the next book!

I gave it 3 stars because the writing was a little off for me and there were some continuity issues. I still enjoyed the story but the flow bugged me.

Holy Psycho. Zain puts the hot in psychotic and just when you think he’s hit peak crazy? Guess what? There’s more! Even as a dark romance avid reader, this book had me questioning my morals a time or two.

As always, check your TWs before reading and enjoy the ride. 🖤
