Him & Her

Rate this book
This isn't a story about a BLACK man and a WHITE woman who fall in love. It's not a story about how opposites attract. It's not a story about unity or overcoming society's expectations, delusions, biases, or criticisms. And it sure as hell isn't a story about how two people changed the country's view on race and love.

This is a story about two people who have more in common than everyone thinks. This is a story about a man who's been hurt by the woman he should've trusted most, and a woman who thinks romantic love is just a myth Hallmark invented.

This is a story about two people who discover they just... fit. This is a story about two people who are better together than apart, who learn that not only does love exist, but when it's meant to be, it's easy. It's fun. It's a small slice of heaven in this shitty thing we call life.

This is the story of two people who find love. Two people who know the color of their skin is just a shell that houses what's inside—and it's what's inside that counts. It's what's inside that they love about each other.

They just can't seem to understand why no one sees it, and why the differences in their skin color have to be the topic of every conversation. Or why everyone expects, no, wants their love to fall apart.

This is a story about two people on a journey, but their journey isn't about falling in love. Falling in love was easy. The journey is about staying together when everyone is hell-bent on tearing them apart.
...just because he's a black man and she's a white woman.

Emily is a Midwestern Gal, but could be anywhere as you read this. She gypsy's the country, as well as south of the border. Adventure feeds her soul, and offers great writing material. She loves kids and working with kids, but can only handle caring for four-legged furry friends. A crazy dog has trained Emily to be her partner in life. Vices include Swedish Fish, ignoring chores in favor of reading, and caring too much for people in her life. She chose to write this bio in third person as she is an Aries, and found writing in first person ended up with her writing an excessively long life story. Aries like to talk about themselves. It is something Emily is working on being more mindful of.

This is another great read by Emily Eck. Most people don't realize the struggles and worries that interracial couples can, and still do, face. I am white and married, happily, to a black man for 9 years now. Luckily, we didn't go through everything Denise and Michael did. Yes, I have had some family members that weren't happy at first, but luckily for us, we, and our daughter, changed them and made them realize that love doesn't see colors, it is color blind. Yes, I have concerns about our daughter, and we will deal with it, if and when it happens.

Neither Denise or Michael have had an easy life. Both were unloved and unwanted foster kids. That is until they find each other at community service. They both found something neither knew they wanted, existed, or needed....LOVE

But what happens when they are slapped in the face with racism that still exists? Will they make it through, or will it just be too hard and too much to handle? Is love worth it?

"I was addicted to us, the things we made each other feel when we were together like this. It was raw and primal, yet the most honest expression f love I'd ever experienced."

I did love the paintings done by WKTO and the little explanation by him about why he did those paintings.

This story really asks, is love enough?

I was given this book for an honest review. This is the first book I've read by Emily Eck and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! I will DEFINITELY be reading more. She definitely writes a very thorough, detailed, enjoyable, twisty, real life story that you can totally envision yourself in. When most people think of their normal love stories, they think love is easy and happily ever after. I don't want to give too many details and spoil this AWESOME story, but Michael and Denise, being an interracial couple, find that their love is put to the test, over and over. Love Sees NO Colour! Great Job Emily!!

Loved, loved, loved this newest book. It's sweet, funny, sexy, and deals with real relationship issues that people can relate to, even if they've never been part of an interracial couple. Another must read.

The beginning of this amazing story, slowly tears your heart right in half. But the best part is, throughout the pages, somehow, your heart will mend right along with Michael and Denise.

"Lord, I swear I'll keep it together. You know I usually do. It was one poor choice, and I was just trying to make rent. I've already got a new job lined up at the Valvoline that opened up last month. Keep me employed, please. That's all I ask. Thanks, Amen."

I read just about anything. I may not like it, but I always see it through. I knew that I had never read anything like this before. And I went in with a certain mind set. Ok, bi-racial relationship, their struggles. I was wrong. I ended up being a lot like the people that judged Michael and Denise. Yes, their race plays a part. But it is so much more than that. Their relationship is full with the same struggles that any other is. And thinking it wouldn't be, was shame on me.

"We didn't pity each other. We listened, the feeling of her skin against mine creating a safe place where I could share things I'd never spoken aloud before. Maybe that's why we never made it into our clothes. It seemed we shared our stories best when naked pressed together, skin to skin, and without an inch of space between us."

If you are looking for hearts and rainbows and cookie cutters, this is absolutely not the book for you. As always, Emily keeps it real. Real in her words, real in her feelings, real in the lives of the people she creates.

Michael and Denise find each other in a very unconventional way, but somehow it works perfectly for them. Even they are prejudice to appearances at first. Human flaws are truly what makes the world go round. Overcoming their initial thoughts, is only the beginning of their journey. Finding the passion they have for each other and finding the courage to let it fly is the destination.

"I was addicted to us, the things we made each other feel when we were together like this. It was raw and primal, yet the most honest expression of love I'd ever experienced."

With the world set against them, and their troubled pasts to boot, this is not a fluffy pink romance. So pull up your emergency cigarettes, and your air mattress, curl up, and prepare to have your world rocked. I know mine was.

Here's the thing; writing isn't easy.
We get these ideas in our wild brains and put them in book form hoping the world gets it. Some do, some don't whatever.

But, when I read Him & Her, I got all the feels.

Giving me any kind of feeling isn't easy considering I have a black heart. These two melted it, totally.

Love isn't easy.
Being broke isn't either.
But living in a community where race is an issue? It can be torture.
You'd think in 2015 black and white relationships wouldn't shock folks, but sadly it does. The human race while making strides are still hung up on race which is fucking sad.

Happy endings rarely come easy and when it's fought for I appreciate that shit. Kudos Em, proud a yous.

I could not get into this book because of the writing. The POV switched too often, it was a little disorientating.
