The beginning of this amazing story, slowly tears your heart right in half. But the best part is, throughout the pages, somehow, your heart will mend right along with Michael and Denise.
"Lord, I swear I'll keep it together. You know I usually do. It was one poor choice, and I was just trying to make rent. I've already got a new job lined up at the Valvoline that opened up last month. Keep me employed, please. That's all I ask. Thanks, Amen."
I read just about anything. I may not like it, but I always see it through. I knew that I had never read anything like this before. And I went in with a certain mind set. Ok, bi-racial relationship, their struggles. I was wrong. I ended up being a lot like the people that judged Michael and Denise. Yes, their race plays a part. But it is so much more than that. Their relationship is full with the same struggles that any other is. And thinking it wouldn't be, was shame on me.
"We didn't pity each other. We listened, the feeling of her skin against mine creating a safe place where I could share things I'd never spoken aloud before. Maybe that's why we never made it into our clothes. It seemed we shared our stories best when naked pressed together, skin to skin, and without an inch of space between us."
If you are looking for hearts and rainbows and cookie cutters, this is absolutely not the book for you. As always, Emily keeps it real. Real in her words, real in her feelings, real in the lives of the people she creates.
Michael and Denise find each other in a very unconventional way, but somehow it works perfectly for them. Even they are prejudice to appearances at first. Human flaws are truly what makes the world go round. Overcoming their initial thoughts, is only the beginning of their journey. Finding the passion they have for each other and finding the courage to let it fly is the destination.
"I was addicted to us, the things we made each other feel when we were together like this. It was raw and primal, yet the most honest expression of love I'd ever experienced."
With the world set against them, and their troubled pasts to boot, this is not a fluffy pink romance. So pull up your emergency cigarettes, and your air mattress, curl up, and prepare to have your world rocked. I know mine was.
