Hazel Hausswolff is playing the corpse again, posing as a ghost to liven up a late-night walking tour on the streets of York.
Before long, she’s faced with a real dead body when an unknown woman collapses onto the cobbles of the Shambles, stabbed in the neck.
As the closest thing to a witness to the crime, Hazel sees evidence the police deny a river of blood flowing down the Shambles and a procession of ants fleeing the corpse.
With constable-in-training Dom in tow, Hazel leads the search for the killer and the truth.
The second book in the York Murders series, which features York landmarks, cold-blooded murder and a warm-hearted amateur detective.
The thing I love most about these books is that York is geographically correct. It’s so good to be able to imagine exactly where the events are taking place.
I enjoyed reading The Corpse in the Shambles and the return of Hazel Hausswolff and Dominique Amy. The setting and murder itself was fantastic but what disappointed me this time was the climax and final reveal - it did not feel believable whatsoever, it felt rushed and poorly executed unfortunately. It's a shame as this was a great read for around 80% of it.
