Hard Ink #4.5

Hard as Steel

Rate this book
After identifying her employer's dangerous enemies, Jessica Jakes takes refuge at the compound of the Raven Riders Motorcycle Club. Fellow Hard Ink tattooist and Raven leader Ike Young promises to keep Jess safe for as long as it takes, which would be perfect if his close, personal, round-the-clock protection didn't make it so hard to hide just how much she wants him—and always has.

Ike Young loved and lost a woman in trouble once before. The last thing he needs is alone time with the sexiest and feistiest woman he's ever known, one he's purposely kept at a distance for years. Now, Ike's not sure he can keep his hands or his heart to himself—or that he even wants to anymore. And that means he has to do whatever it takes to hold on to Jess forever.

5 - "You're a little pain in my ass." Stars!

Another absolutely stellar read from Laura Kaye. This novella transitions us from the Hard Ink series in that it gives you the story of what happens to, and between Jess and Ike, after he takes her away from the rest of the group in Baltimore because of the threat to her life, and introduces us to the Raven Riders Motorcycle Club, when they end up staying at the compound.

There is no messing with this one, the chemistry between Jess and Ike, is combustible at the start of the novella and does not take long to boil over when they find themselves in close quarters together. Both a little commitment shy for their own reasons, but both also irrevocably drawn to the other there step out of the friend-zone, into something more is inevitable, especially as they start to understand more about each other and their pasts.

”Living life on your own terms is the sweetest vengeance of all.”

Another Solidly entertaining read, Hard as Steel is also a great step over into the authors new Raven Riders MC series, the first full length book Ride Hard; is due for release April 2016.

Holy hot damn!! This novella was hella interesting and hella sexy. If this was just a taste of what Laura Kaye has to offer, sign me up!!

Jess and Ike have been best friends for four years. Due to some behind-the-scenes drama, we're immediately thrust into a story about Jess having to hid out from some bad guys and Ike's tasked with protecting her. It was soon obvious that these two wanted each other real bad. However, a traumatic even from Ike's past has left him hesitant to start anything with Jess. The sparks flew, clothes fell off, the sex was incredibly hot, and there was a decent yet vague plot. I'm off to add some more Laura Kaye to my tbr.

He wished the light was on so he could see her, but maybe the darkness was better. It made it feel more like the dream he’d thought it was.

I’m a Hard Ink fan and over the course of the series, I’ve gotten gaga over those men and the people that surrounded them. Even at the start, Jess and Ike had this tension between them that had intrigue me and wished for something for them. And now, wish granted. Ta da! To be honest, most of 1001 Dark Nights that I’ve read were rather not so enjoyable for me, and I was hesitant to try another. But to think that this is Jess and Ike and I was so goddamn excited. Add to the fact that I get to take a sneak peek of the Raven Riders, this outlaw club that has taken to itself to save the troubled. Whatfuckingever.

Ike and Jess’ story took somewhere in Hard to Be Good and Hard to Let Go. Well, to fully enjoy this novel, I suggest that you read the Hard Ink Series to know the dynamics between Ike and Jess and to better understand their reactions to what was happening in here. But, if you won’t, well, just enjoy these two because I know you’ll want to meet the Hard Ink men eventually and look forward to the Raven Riders like me.

I didn’t want to put too much expectation while I started reading this, but I guess maybe it was the weather and me or so because it was what I was feeling during those chapters that it made for a slow read. And I can’t believe as much as I like Ike, he had turned out to be an asshole. Fuck you very much.

“I’d dreamed of being with you so many times, but I never thought it would happen. I could’ve lived on those memories for the rest of my life if I had to.”

Indeed. Ike and Jess are too broken souls who have been attracted with each other ever since. But Jess, blatant that she was, had some pride left in her, and so she had sleep with other men, where the trouble had started. A few nights before the massive changed that happened – that is Jess going to live with Ike until the shit that hit the fan cool down- she had slept with a guy, whom she later discovered is in bed with Seneka, a big company that is after her friends.

Ike being a Raven, and being as he was, of course offered to watch Jess. Yep, the term was watch. And so the fun begins. Or not.

“Just for tonight. As often and in any way that you want. In the morning, it’ll all have been a fevered dream.”

That was a slow build for my taste and frankly I was losing faith. But somehow, with the shit happening on the Hard Ink, Ike made some big decisions and I had to say, finally. Those parts were actually fun, the teasing and the play and it lifted my spirit somehow. I’ve like Ike and to know the past he had to carry in his shoulders, my heart went out for him more. But being an asshole? Gah, I was frustrated with him.

His smart-ass, flirtatious, fun-loving, brave, sometimes maddening, always loyal Jess.

Somehow, more than ever, I’ve felt longing for the Hard Ink men and it’s like I was feeling the hardships that they had experience through Ike and Jess and in some way I understand what they’re feeling, the wait they had to go through, on a deeper level. I was actually sorry for them, to want to help and yet somehow they can do nothing more than just hope for the best.

I love how it actually ended since it made me hopeful for them. I think I am more excited for the Raven Riders and that I hope I will be seeing more of Ike and Jess in the future. And to hope against hope, that of course there will be more involvement from the Hard Ink men.

This is in fact the best crossover novella I have read because it had given me both worlds of something I’ve loved and something that I will hope to love, and with that, I am stepping this up.

“I don’t know what the future holds, Jess. But I know that right here is where I’m supposed to be. With you.”

Four stars for this hot treat! Fans of the Hard Ink series have been waiting to see what Ike and Jessica got up to after they fled Baltimore on his bike in the wake of mayhem and tragedy at Hard Ink. A 100-page crossover novella, Hard As Steel closes out the Hard Ink Series and gives us new insight into the lives of the Raven Riders MC.

Ike Young has always fought valiantly against the attraction he and Jessica Jakes have for each other, but when her safety is threatened he finds that even the ghosts from the past that haunt him can't withstand the burning desire that rages between them in the close confines of his getaway cottage.

Hard As Steel is a hot, dirty, fun and quick read that gives us a glimpse into secondary characters we've been wanting to know more about. We get to know Ike as the bad boy who never really wanted to be a bad boy, but whose past tragedy chains him to a half-life where hope and happiness seem like just a far-off dream. And Jessica proves to be sweet and vulnerable under her fiery exterior, as she, too, has past regrets that plague her.

I loved getting to know Ike and Jessica, loved knowing how their pasts made them who they were and how much passion and respect they had for each other for all this time. My Kindle was nearly aflame with the blistering hot eroticism flowing from the pages.

She reached out in the darkness...to find him still hard. "Oh, God," she said, her heart beating in her throat. She might not survive this night, but what a way to go.

"I've got four years of pent-up fantasies about you," he said, flipping her over. "I'm gonna make them all come true tonight or pass out trying."

Of course, as a Hard Ink fan, I was tickled that there was this short installment to feed the need for more of the drama. And I always love glimpses of up-coming series'. Laura Kaye's writing is always so sharp, sensual and gripping, I can't wait to read about the Raven Riders.

On its own, Hard as Steel couldn't really stand. It's comes across as more of a gift for Hard Ink fans. The references to the conflict and dramas of the other books are many, important and would be confusing/boring to anyone who didn't know what it was all about. Because Hard As Steel is happening simultaneously with Hard To Let Go, there's information in it that would be spoiler-ish if it were read before, but it also doesn't add anything to that particular story line.

I would recommend the reader have a knowledge of the Hard Ink saga and that if a Hard Ink fan wanted to skip it, not to worry about missing any essential knowledge. But, let's be honest, we all needed to know what happened between Ike and Jess. It was sweet, sexy and I thank you, Laura Kaye, for your gift to the Hard Ink fans!

I love this series by Laura Kaye and I was delighted to pick up this shorter story about Ike from Raven Riders and Jess. These two should be together , they fit so well. Jess has wanted Ike for a long time but he keeps her at arms length, then they are forced together so that he can keep her safe from the danger that lurks.

The dynamic between these two is really well written. Their connection is passionate and intense. The secondary characters are weaved beautifully into the story - it was great to see Bunny, Sam and Ben again. The time scale of this book correlates to when Cora and Haven have arrived in the Raven's compound.

As a heroine, Jess is a really likeable girl. She is brave, strong and she gets Ike so well. He is a true alpha but he really needs his 'come to Jesus' moment to wake up and realise Jess is so right for him and how he really feels about her.

Great book - could be read as a standalone but fits better if read in the context of the other two series'.

HEA? Yes
Cheating? No

Jess and Ike were hot.

Hard as Steel flew by. I mean.. it had bikers so it wasn't that hard to get into it. These two were not looking for a relationship but they definitely found one - with each other. They were cute and adorable but things got steamy when they were just by themselves. I was so proud of them getting out of the friend-zone because I would've been so mad if they didn't. This one was a lot of fun to read and can't wait for the next biker romance.

This was so awesome! Love, love, loved it! This was a full story that really packed a punch. It was full of emotion, intensity, and heat.

Ike and Jessica are wonderful characters and I loved getting to know them and about their pasts. They have fantastic chemistry together. There was so much sexual tension and animosity, it was great. I couldn't get enough. I love Ike and Jessica opening up and coming together and seeing those sweet and vulnerable moments between the two. Love their attraction and heat as well (oh the heat! Seriously, WOW!)!

This story overlaps with the final Hard Ink book, Hard To Let Go, which I thought was really cool. I loved getting those bits and pieces and reliving those moments. Extremely well written story, excellent development and build.

I thought I was excited for the new Raven Riders series before but after reading this and getting a peek into Ike's world and meeting some of the other Ravens, I am even more excited. Bring it on!

Fantastic read! Laura Kaye is a great story teller that really pulls you in. I pretty much inhaled this in one sitting. 5 hot stars!

LOVED this one!

Ike was smoking, and it was a nice change of pace to read about a heroine who wasn't shy about getting around. I could have done with a bit less pushing away by Ike, but it was still a really good read!

I really love this series.

ARC REVIEW:

If you are a fan of Laura Kaye's Hard Ink stories, you will not be disappointed. You will recognize Jessica and Ike. They both work for Jeremy and are beloved like family. Ike is also the a member of the Raven Riders Motorcycle club. When Nick and the rest of gang get in over their heads, Ike offers help from the MC.

One of the things I like most about this story is that Ike and Jessica have an established relationship. In too many cases with novellas, insta-love abounds. However as co-workers and friends, it doesn't requires much imagination to see that these two beautiful, edgy people would find love. Unlike the previous Hard Ink books, there is more emphasis on the relationship between Ike and Jessica and less on the suspense. The biggest obstacle to this couple's relationship is their own inner turmoil and rightly so. Guilt, fear, pride can be the biggest hurdles in relationships.

With the precision of a tattoo artist, Laura Kaye has a beautiful way of articulating the small truths that hit home:

Funny thing about having choices taken away from you—it tended to make things all kinds of crystal clear. You either felt relief all the way into your bones because it was the right decision even if you hadn’t made it, or every cell inside you cried out in rebellion and loss and regret because you learned—too late—what it was you really wanted.

She also amps up the bedroom scenes. This is as racy and explicit as Hard to Be Good. Whoa, just whoa.

Hard as Steel seeks to establish the bridge between the new characters in future Raven Rider books and the old Hard Ink folks. Giving us just enough to tease our interest, we know that we will be seeing more of Doc, Bunny, Rodeo, Slider, Scooter, Blake, Jeb, and Bear. It's thrilling and exciting to see where Laura Kaye will take us next.

Thank you to the author for an opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I had NO interest in a motorcycle club romance but after seeing this Raven Riders series come up over and over in recommendation lists for good romance. This is a prequel (0.5) to the actual series and I really enjoyed this one so much more than I'd expected. Looking forward to continuing with the series.

It pains me to give this novella such a low rating. My loyalty & respect for author Laura Kaye are the ONLY things propping up my 2-star rating; otherwise, I'd have given this novella the 1 star that it truly deserves. And just for the record, I LOVE author Laura Kaye. (I've purchased nearly every book that she's ever published). I also have mad love for the Hard Ink series, & thus, I had such high hopes for this installment, featuring Ike Young & Jessica Jakes.

Ike & Jess were two characters that I really enjoyed getting to know in previous Hard Ink novels & novellas, and I was beyond giddy when I found out that they were getting their own storyline. Sadly, I wish like hell that I had never come across Ike & Jessica's novella, Hard as Steel, since it pretty much eviscerated any affection that I had for these two characters (and Ike's character, in particular).

Right off the bat, Jessica is depicted as a needy, overly-desperate pushover of a woman.

“He could just go up there and get in the bed—and take what he wanted, and what he knew Jess would be only too happy to give.... Jess wore her emotions like she wore her ink—out loud and unapologetically. He had a pretty good idea that she was rocking some more-than-friendly and more-than-physical feelings for him.”

“Jess was too needy to worry about pride, and they’d gone too far to avoid things getting awkward between them if that was going to happen. She needed him inside her, just this once.

'I want to fuck you, trust me,' Ike said, voice gritty. 'But I’m…that’s what it would be for me. So I get it if—'

'That’s what it would be for me, too,' she lied. 'Just for tonight. As often and in any way that you want. In the morning, it’ll all have been a fevered dream,' she rushed out, her mind racing. 'And we’ll be the same friends we were yesterday.' She nearly held her breath waiting for him to make up his mind.”

Jess & Ike are portrayed as very close friends, & Jess considers Ike one of her BEST friends. Well, here is what Ike had to say to BFF Jess, in regards to their hookup:

“He gestured with his hand between them. 'You and I?' Ike shook his head and ignored the burning pain in his chest. 'We’ll never be anything more than this. Relationships aren’t my thing anyway, and definitely not with a woman always in so much damn trouble.' He was the world’s biggest asshole, he knew he was, especially as hurt flashed across her face. 'And last night? That was just fucking, just scratching an itch. So whatever you think it meant, Jessica? It didn’t. Not even a little. Not to me.'”

“His words echoed in her brain, doing more and more damage as they sank in. She’d been nothing more to him than scratching an itch? As if she’d just been a series of holes to get him off and nothing more....

But to say being with her had meant absolutely nothing? That didn’t just negate what they’d shared, it negated their friendship, too. No friend talked to or looked at you that way. With friends like that… She chuffed out a humorous laugh. Exactly.

Except, fuck, his words were absolutely slicing up her insides. That he could say shit like that after she’d opened up with him hurt.”

And as if Ike's callous words to Jessica weren't hurtful enough, here came the breaking point for me as a reader. What did Jess do in order to stick up for herself in light of Ike's cruelty? Did she attempt to defend herself? Did she show an iota of self-respect? NO. Instead, she He turned her around so that he could take what he wanted without being forced to look into her face & witness her heartbreak.

“Jess had been so happy to find Bunny up and around this morning because the lady’s company would provide the perfect buffer between her and Ike. With Bunny around, the pair of them probably wouldn’t fight and certainly couldn’t fuck. And clearly Jess needed that kind of third-party intervention after she’d so easily given in to Ike’s desire last night.... On the pool table.... Still mostly dressed and possibly more angry than she’d ever been in her life.”

WTF?!? Jess was such a doormat. And to make matters worse, forgiveness & the HEA came very quickly (approximately 20 pages) thereafter. It was absolutely ludicrous.

*1.25/5 stars*

*** I'm not part of the Safety Gang, but many of my friends are. Would I consider this novella safe by Safety Gang standards? Absofreakinglutely NO.

This is a filthy friends-to-fucking novella that had me scrambling around for my vibrator. Holy shit. Ike and Jessica’s chemistry is like another character lurking in the background waiting to be introduced. And when it is…oh.my.god. There was one scene that I went back and read again. And then again. Because, fuck. That was hot.

This story is happening at the same time as the one in Hard To Let Go and I adored seeing this piece from Jessica and Ike’s perspective. This love story might be short, but it still manages to plunge you deep into the plot. Jessica is running from the crazy dangerous men that are wreaking havoc on the rest of the Hard Ink crew and Ike has been voluntold to protect her. Not that he wouldn’t have done that anyway. He may not be willing to admit that he has real feelings for Jessica, but he sure as hell knows that he needs to keep her safe.

As they stay hidden in a cabin on the MC Club’s compound, Ike refuses to give in to Jessica’s tempting…until he doesn’t really have a choice. Somehow in a few short pages, Laura balances heat with sweet romance, and makes you fall in love with both of these characters.

From Ike’s muscles, possessive spirit and suppressed feelings to Jessica’s strength & heart-on-her-sleeve attitude, I loved every piece of this story. Did I mention the sex is hot? I Loved this dirty and delicious addition to the Hard Ink family! 5 Stars!

Not only is this book HOT...it's so HOT that I had to read it twice...just to make sure that I measured the hotness correctly! Ike and Jess not only have such explosive chemistry, I swear their clothes just fall off the moment their eyes meet, but Laura keeps the "friendship" alive with super fun banter and sexual innuendos (that us dirty minded people will say "I totally would have said that too).

For such a short read, Laura sure packs a punch, jumping right into the story, and giving a realistic portrayal of two people who have loved each other for years, and am finally getting the opportunity to get those feelings out in the open...well...after the insane night of crazy, off the chains, 'did that really just happen', I need a cold drink like NOW' sex. Holy Momma...yeah...we are talking fever induced madness...and it was so damn good! No one can ever say that Laura Kaye can't write the S@&^ out of a love scene! Marz is my favorite Dirty Talker, Beckett is my favorite up against the wall lover, Jeremy is my romeo...but Ike...let's just say HARD AS STEEL is the perfect name for his book...and his dirty minded ways!

If you need a quick read that will have you feeling the burn...HARD AS STEEL is a Must Read!! More Ravens needed now please! Can't Wait! In the meantime, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE READ THE HARD INK BOYS!

Hard As Steel was a crossover between Laura Kaye’s Hard Ink series and her new Raven Riders series.

Ike Young was a tattoo artist at Hard Ink. He was also a patched member of the Raven Riders MC. He was gorgeous, rough, protective and all alpha. We know he had a past, but until now it’s yet to unfold.

Jessica Jakes was also an employee of Hard Ink. She was fully tatted, sassy, independent and sexy. She was best friends with Ike but had secretly crushed on him for years, never wanting to mess with the friendship.

We met Ike and Jessica previously as Hard Ink employees who were mixed up in the mess created by the Hard Ink suspenseful plots. As a result, Ike took Jessica into hiding until everything was resolved. Hard As Steel began in the middle of Hard Ink’s book four, Hard to Let Go and concluded at the same time Hard to Let Go concluded. Kaye did a great job recounting some key points so we could assess the timeline accurately. My only suggestion would be to start the story with how Jessica called Ike as her home was being broken into. The emotions and turmoil of the two as she was in the middle of it would have brought even more to the story.

The storyline was simple focusing around Ike and Jessica hiding out away from the danger until the Hard Ink troubles were settled. It also served as a bridge for beginning to introduce the Raven Riders MC and kick off the series. I loved both Ike and Jessica and hopefully we’ll get more development from them as the new series unfolds.

In the end, Hard As Steel was a quick novella that was well written with a simple plot and a great bridge for what’s to come in the Raven Riders MC. Dare Kenyon, the MC President, is first up in Ride Hard.

I'm a huge fan of Laura Kaye's Hard Ink series so when I found out she was writing a spin off about the Raven Riders MC I was thrilled. Hard as Steel is a crossover novel that bridges the two series and gives us the chance to meet some more of the Raven Riders characters. We've already met both of the main characters, Jess and Ike, in the Hard Ink novels and timeline of this novella is during Hard to Let Go so will contain spoilers for that book if you haven't already read it.

Ike and Jess both work alongside Jeremy and Nick as tattoo artists at Hard Ink but they are drawn into the fight to clear Nick's Special Forces team of wrongdoing when Jess is targeted by their enemy. When it becomes clear that Jess is in danger Ike, who is also a member of the Raven Riders MC, immediately steps up to offer her his protection. They have been friends for a long time and he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

Jess has been attracted to Ike since they first met but there has always been a very clear line drawn between them so they have never given into temptation but now that she finds herself in close quarters with him for a prolonged period of time she is finding him harder to resist than ever before. Ike has never wanted a relationship, he let down the first woman he loved and has never been able to forgive himself so doesn't feel that he deserves a second chance at happiness. Jess tempts him more than any other woman has though and it isn't long before the heat between them blazes out of control.

I enjoyed seeing this couple get their happily ever after, they have both been through some traumatic times and it was nice to see them talk things through and come out the other side. There was a moment when Ike was a complete idiot and really annoyed me with the way he spoke to Jess but he's man enough to apologise so I was able to forgive him. The chemistry between them was great but I did feel that in the circumstances things happened a bit sooner than I would have expected them to. Hard as Steel is a novella so there is less time for relationship development but it was an enjoyable story and has left me looking forward to spending more time with the Raven Riders when Ride Hard releases next year.

Hard As Steel is the newest work from author Laura Kaye and is part of the 1,001 Dark Nights 2015 line-up as well as a cross-over of Ms. Kaye’s Hard Ink Series and her Raven Riders Series. I am a huge fan of Ms. Kaye’s and when I tell you I devoured this story, that would be a gross understatement. I couldn’t put it down! It was phenomenal. Filled with suspense and scorching heat, it was just amazing.

The attraction between Jessica and Ike was two things: mutual and hidden. Neither one wanted to admit to the other that they had this secret yearning but now that they were stuck together in very close quarters, shut off from the rest of the world, deep down they both knew it would only be a matter of time before the need took over. The reasons both of them felt unworthy of the other were different but also very much the same: fear. Fear for their safety. Fear of unworthiness. But fate and emotion would help with Ike and Jessica overcome the fear and when it did? It was a thing of burning hot beauty.

I loved every thing about this book. I loved the plot, the suspense, the building emotion, the attraction between these two headstrong and vulnerable characters…all of it. Ms. Kaye does such a beautiful job with building the entire situation and sexual tension between Ike and Jess and it connected me to both of them on such a delicious level. I wanted nothing more than for these two broken souls to get together and trust in one another. Separately, Jess and Ike are wonderful characters. She is feisty and quirky and had me laughing out loud so many times. I loved that she lives her life on her own terms and she’s such a breath of fresh air in the world of book heroines. Ike is just as amazing with his gruff exterior and hidden big heart. I loved that he lets Jess be who she is and appreciates it with an adoration that had me swooning. Together these two are off the charts smoking hot. Hands down, this is one of the hottest books from author Kaye and I loved every smoking hot second of it!

This is a story you won’t want to miss. I cannot wait to see what’s in store for this series and will be anxiously waiting for more!

I remember in the Hard Ink novels when Ike whisked Jess away to hide her out after her house was ransacked. I remember knowing that there was something there between them, and being intrigued by that. Now we have their story.

Ike is an intriguing guy. He's a tattoo artist at Hard Ink. He's an important member of a motorcycle club. He's an all around heroic bad ass biker guy. And, he's got baggage from his past that has prevented him from acting on his interest in his co-worker, Jess, for years. It should demonstrate how good of a guy he is that he's willing to fight against his attraction to her when she is in trouble and in need of his help.

It's not a one-sided thing. Jess has wanted Ike for years as well, but she has her own reasons for not going after him. And, she is tired of them. Except, she can throw herself at him all she wants. Ike is made of steel and is determined to resist her. Infuriating man.

You know, the Hard Ink novels have a lot of really awesome elements to them - an intriguing mystery, incredible suspense, sweet romance, and ridiculously hot sex. Imagine taking all that and packing it into 100 pages instead of 300 pages. It's like anything else that's concentrated. You still have all the ingredients, but they are all way more potent.

My favorite part about Hard As Steel was the chemistry between Ike and Jess. My goodness - it was crazy. Ike had his reasons for fighting it most of the time, but you just can't fight something like this forever. And when it is unleashed... wow. So. Hot. Like, seriously - INFERNO.

It was interesting witnessing all the events at the end of the Hard Ink story from outside the fold. Remember that Ike's and Jess' story is happening at the same time as the last two novels. So, from time to time, Ike would call Dare to get an update, and Ike would relay the information to Jess.

If you're a fan of the Hard Ink series, you have got to read this novella. It's like the best kind of icing on this delicious cake.

Laura Kaye is one of a few authors that I will 1-click, no questions asked. I love her Stubborn alpha males and Ike Young is just that, a stubborn, sexy, hulk of a man who rides a motor bike? What's not to like? The truth of that is absolutely nothing, he's perfect. Then we have adorable Jessica Jakes who is in danger because of the people she knows (the super hot Hard Ink guys). Caught in the crossfire between her employers and their enemies, her 'friend' Ike takes her away to keep her safe. Unfortunately for him, this means being in close contact with her at all times (something he's been avoiding). He doesn't want or need love and commitment and he knows it would be much more than a fling or a one night stand with Jess. The chemistry between them is intense and I was rooting for a HEA so much. A sexy friends to lovers romance that can be read as s standalone, however, I heartily recommend you read the Hard Ink series first, just because, it's a brilliant series

While novellas aren’t my preferred choice when it comes to book-length, Laura Kaye has previously proven herself to be more than capable if packing a well-rounded story, complete with emotions, conflict, and romance, into an abbreviated amount of time. While Hard As Steel is a crossover novella between the author’s Hard Ink series and her upcoming MC series, Raven Riders, the story stands on its own, following the between protagonists, Ike Young and Jessica Jakes. Not only is Hard As Steel an emotionally compelling friends-to-lovers romance, but it’s hands down the sexiest book this author has written. The sexual tension…the combustible chemistry…the outrageously steamy love scenes with a side of kink – after I finished, I just wanted to give Laura Kaye a high five for a job well done.

Because the timeline overlaps with events from the Hard Ink series, Hard As Steel takes place during a lull in the action, instead focusing on the development of Ike and Jessica’s romance. This is a character-driven romance with two larger-than-life characters whose personalities simultaneously clash with and complement each other. The combination of the gruff and overprotective, tattooed biker, Ike, with the vertically challenged yet formidable force that is Jess is immensely entertaining. What should be a dark and ominous mood considering their situation is instead light-hearted and humorous because of their teasing repartee. Passionate, dirty (in the best possible way), and no-holds-barred, the romance between Ike and Jessica is too intense and all-consuming to be ignored. Oh how I wished this was a full-length novel, not because the story wasn't complete or satisfactory, but because I simply wanted more of Ike and Jess – more emotions, more love scenes, more everything.

What I love most about a good friends-to-lovers romance is that effortless connection between the two characters, the one that makes you fear for their friendship once their relationship combines physical and emotional intimacy. From their good-natured ribbing and their obvious concern for each other’s wellbeing, it’s evident that Ike and Jessica are close, yet there’s a wall between them, behind which each hides their true feelings for the other. The sexual tension between them is deliciously agonizing, their mutual attraction like a physical presence, silently urging them to act on their pent-up desires, and the results are nothing short of spectacular. If this novella is any indication of what the Raven Riders series will be like, I can’t wait to get my hands on those books.

YESSS!!!! Bring the Ravens one!

To say I was stricken with sadz when I finished reading the last Hard Ink novel is an understatement. I loved every single word Laura Kaye wrote in that series. And the came 1001 Dark Nights! *squee*

You must remember Ike and Jess who work at Hard Ink Tattoo, right? Well, they had to run halfway through the series as Jess’s place was ransacked by the bad guys who wanted info from her on the SF team. Ike is responsible to her, and as it turns out in this novella, the two have strong feelings that build throughout their 4 years working together.

I. Love. Ike. He’s absolutely wonderful and up until the novella he didn’t get enough attention and his awesomeness didn’t shine through. For obvious reasons. But now, having read Hard As Steel he shines like a beacon.

Ike is fierce, protective, surprisingly gentle, super tall, ragged and has a heartbreaking past that’s affected him in such a way to the point where he wasn’t living life much.

Jess is just as I got her from the very beginning of the series. She’s a handful, potentially headache induces creature, with endless energy and a very friendly, easy going personality. She’s also pretty much alone in the world if it wasn’t for Jeremy Rixey and Ike.

When Jess calls Ike all terrified, hiding in the back of her closet, and after he picks his heart up from the pits it sank to and rushes to help her, she’s wisked away to a safe house, until the storm passes.

That takes a bit over a week. During that week this novella takes place and during that week we get deep into Jess and Ike, their fears and wants and the culmination of their love affair.

I drank up this novella with pleasure; at Kaye’s words, the feel of being back in the Hard Ink world and the knowledge we’re getting a parallel world in this new series: Raven Riders.

Hard As Steel has everything, laughs, smut (awesome smut!!!), playful banter, action, fun, friendship and lots of love and a nice novella size bit of angst. It’s a perfect balm until we get more Ravens.

I CANNOT get enough of Laura Kaye's Hard Ink Men! All of them are alpha males to their core, but there is also a softer side of them...maybe even a tormented side due to circumstances beyond their control, and Ike Young, Kaye’s newest Hard Ink man seems to be weighed down with a past that won’t release him from moving on and enjoying more than living half a life. But if there’s one thing that Kaye has proven to her readers, it’s that her heroines are more than willing to battle their men’s demons and prove to them that they are more than worth the love and devotion these women want to bestow upon them.

Ike is no stranger to guilt and a past that he prefers to remain hidden, but he portrays himself as the badass motorcycle brother and tattooist and nothing more because he refuses to allow another woman into his life, especially one with as many problems as Jessica seems to have after a one night stand turns into someone who wants her dead. But Ike and Jess's attraction to one another continues to sizzle as Ike secures and protects her from harm, and when two people with so much sexual chemistry are confined to a secluded cabin for an unforeseen amount of time, the steel wall Ike has around his heart/body is no match for his feelings for Jessica. But even though Ike wants her, she’s going to have to fight tooth and nail to get him to realize that he can have her…that he deserves her, which seems to be a much harder battle than the one the Hard Ink Men are fighting against their hidden enemy.

I’m sad to see my Hard Ink Men series ending, but the way Laura Kaye crosses over to her new Raven Riders series with Ike and Jess’ book proves that there are more alpha males and kick ass heroines in my future and perhaps even some visits of old friends.

4 1/2 Stars!!

I loved it!! The only reason it's 4, not 5 stars is because I wanted more! Just as it was really getting good, it was over. I'm hoping to see more of Ike and Jess in the upcoming "Raven Riders MC" series.

Ike and Jess are simply PERFECT for each other. He is bad ass and protective and she is sweet and wild. She may look like a tattooed wild child- which she is- but she has such a tender spirit. I loved her! And these two burn up the sheets, let me tell you! Ike is a dirty talker, and I do love me some dirty talking. Ike was a complete jackass at times too, but he had his own psychologically impaired reasons and I forgive him. Yep, just like that. Why?, because he is good with his... well, his everything ;) That's why I wanted more of the story. More of the good times together (not just in the bedroom :)).

This was the perfect link between the "Hard Ink" series and the "Raven Riders MC" series. Laura Kaye is one of my favorites and I simply cannot wait for more of her Motorecycle Club! Recommended to the "Hard Ink" lovers and MC story lovers. Happy reading!

I read this book after Hard Ever After because I couldn't let the men of Hard Ink go. This novella opens the doors to a spin off series for the Raven MC that's mentioned in the last few Hard Ink books. I have got to say that Laura Kaye definitely delivered and brought up the heat factor with this novella.
Most of the Hard Ink series has some naughty talkers and sexy times but this novella brought the grit that comes with MC romances. With the other books we don't really get to know Ike and Jessica, but we get glimpses into who they are in Hard as Steel. We also get to see the close brotherhood the Ravens have created as well somewhat see what they are about.
I truly enjoyed Jessica's character as she reminds me of one of my best friends and I wish we could have seen more of her. I hope we do in the future Raven series. Much was packed in this short novella without it being to overwhelming and it fit perfectly as a bridge between the series that is ending and the one that is just starting. I can't wait to get more of the Ravens!!!

Can I tell you how excited I was to find out there would be a Hard Ink and Raven Riders crossover?

Get read for another wild ride….a glimpse into the attraction between Ike and Jessica. Both fled Baltimore when the attack occurred at Hard Ink. As they ‘make tracks’ on the back of Ike’s bike, the duo find themselves fighting an obvious attraction. Something that revs up like the roar of Ike’s motorcycle. Burning up everything in their path. Hiding out in Ike’s secluded cottage proves more than the duo bargained for.

YES…Yes….YES!! I loved this novella that Laura Kaye wrote for Hard Ink fans! Readers will find themselves devouring every word. A bad boy, a haunted past, a desire that will ignite the sheets….it all explodes in this wonderful read! I cannot wait to discover more about the Raven Riders …..Thank you Laura Kaye for this treat for Hard Ink fans!!

This is the first time I've read one of the 1001 Dark Nights books, but I'm no stranger to the Hard Ink series. This story overlapped the events of a couple of those books, so really should not be read without having read that series first. This story wasn't bad, but the characterization was a bit off for me. I really began to hate Ike and how he kept pushing Jess away, and yet wanting to have sex with her at nearly every opportunity. We really didn't get too deep with Jess, other than her love of junk food and her deep, dark secret about her father's death. Thankfully, this was a short story, and an all right introduction to the new Raven Riders series, but it's one I am hesitant to recommend.
