As if it were the opening scene of every crime procedural ever made, Breathe Me In begins when childhood friends Bree and Brad go searching for a lost baseball and instead discover a body. Usually, the killer isn’t still standing nearby. The murderer, later dubbed the Barbed Wire Killer, lets them live, leaving the two children forever connected by a traumatic encounter.

Thirteen years later, the case remains unsolved. Bree and Brad have drifted apart, and it is immediately obvious that more than time has come between them. Bree has become a private investigator, while Brad now works as a detective. When a double homicide brings Bree back to town as a consultant, the two are forced into close proximity once again, both professionally and personally.

If you enjoy crime dramas with a healthy dose of romantic tension, this book will likely hit the mark. The murder investigation shares the spotlight with the complicated history between Bree and Brad, whose unresolved feelings create plenty of sparks. At times, I found it amusing how two women have just turned up dead, yet both protagonists still manage to notice each other’s supermodel-level attractiveness. Readers who enjoy romance woven into their suspense will probably appreciate that balance more than I did.

What worked best for me was the nostalgic atmosphere. Reading Breathe Me In felt like curling up on the couch for a marathon of Castle or Bones. The premise isn’t particularly groundbreaking, but it delivers the familiar comfort of a procedural mystery paired with an old-flame romance. The mystery kept me engaged, and the dynamic between Bree and Brad provided enough emotional tension to keep the pages turning.

While it may not reinvent the crime-thriller genre, Breathe Me In succeeds by embracing the elements many readers already love: an unsolved serial killer case, reluctant partners with complicated history, and a steady blend of suspense and romance. It’s an easy, entertaining read for fans of romantic suspense. Readers will want to keep an eye out for the upcoming books in the Wired to Kill series.

I was given the opportunity of reading this book courtesy of NetGalley and Montlake.

I'm usually more into stories with grit than romance, but Breathe Me In surprised me. J.L. Drake did a solid job balancing emotional moments with enough tension to keep the pages turning. The characters felt real, and while there were times I wanted to tell them both to quit overthinking things and just be honest, that's also what made the story believable.

The chemistry was strong without feeling forced, and there were a few scenes that landed harder than I expected. It isn't an action-packed read, but it kept me invested because the relationships actually mattered. A couple of plot points felt a little drawn out, which is why it lands at four stars instead of five.

If you're looking for a romance that has heart, some emotional punches, and characters worth rooting for, this one's worth picking up. Even from a guy's perspective, I found myself wanting to see how it all played out.

Breathe Me In follows a story filled with danger, secrets, and unexpected connections, where the characters find themselves pulled together while navigating circumstances that are anything but simple. With plenty of suspense and uncertainty surrounding what might happen next, the stakes stay high throughout the book.

This book had me in a chokehold from the beginning. I hit play expecting a suspenseful story, and while I definitely got that, I wasn’t expecting to become so invested in the romance.

The suspense kept me listening, but the romance is what made me not want to stop. The characters had great chemistry, and I found myself rooting for them the entire time.

The audiobook narrators were also fantastic. They brought so much emotion to the story and made it really easy to connect with the characters.

Overall, this was one of those audiobooks that completely pulled me in and kept me entertained from start to finish. If you’re a fan of romantic suspense, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a try. It was an easy 5-star read for me. 📖❤️

This book really had the potential to be a 5⭐ read for me… BUT , oh well...

The story opens in the past, giving us a glimpse into Bree and Brad’s history and the moment that changed everything for them. From there, we jump to the present where Bree returns to town to help investigate a new series of deaths, and of course, reconnects with Brad, now a detective.

Up to that point, I was really into it. The setting, the shared past, the tension between them… it all felt like a great setup.

The investigation side was good and kept me interested. I liked the mystery and how things were unfolding.

But the romance… oh well... that’s where things got a bit (A LOT) frustrating for me.

Brad, my guy… make up your mind. The whole situation with his ex, the back and forth, the mixed signals… it just felt messy and honestly a bit cringe at times. Even Bree seemed to get tired of it at some point and I was right there with her.

The ex (Sherry) didn’t help either… let’s just say she was not my favorite person. (See you in a ditch, b*ch! *cough* ...sorry, not sorry!)

That said, I don’t think this is a bad start to the series. It had a really good foundation, and what really got me excited was the ending. Now I’m definitely curious to see what happens next.

Where can I start with this suspense romance...let's start with our hero & heroine

Bree & Bradley there is past event that haunts them all the way to the present. And formed who they are today. Bree a PI who mostly looks for runaways kids and them home to their parents. Bradley lead Detective and hockey player for the Police Department (still holding on to them skates since high school)

We dive straight into both new lives and how fate brought them back together.

We have 2 murder cases. Shiffield Police Department is working on 2 women murder case and they need a second pair of eyes. Thats when Bree is called and ask to help put as a consultant...no spoliers

HOWEVER a past murder case "Barbed Wire Murder" that link teens Bree and Bradley forever still haunts them. Wondering if this and this links to the Barbed Wire...it shows how much it still affect there thinking...

WARNING do not read at night and there line of tree in sight. Like me you think you are begin stalker by a murder 🤣 yes tense scene although I was waiting for a pig snort from Kevin

This was HARD not to spoil and felt like a detective with notes !! With every characters odd wording or behavior...no spoliers

Stella and Corvin did a fantastic job bringing this suspense romance.

Stella did a brillaint job with Chapter 4 broke my heart when Bree had a panic attack and the way she said "oh my god" the way she said it you can hear the struggle

Chapter 9 Corvin also did a brilliant job with looking for Ronnie Bradley's brother. Hear the panic in that moment and you hear different tone of male voice that Corvic. Very tense seen and bring awareness how horrific PTSD does to their lives

When Bree and Bradley have them moments of begin together and remember their past together. They brought their tense love for each other BEAUTIFULLY to life

I absolutely devoured this one.

This is my first book by the author and this one pulls you in and does not disappoint. I Couldn't stop reading. I had to keep reading to see what happens. Who done it. It keeps you guessing has characters who you can’t help but root for. I absolutely loved Bree n Brad. Cop x PI. Who done it mystery thriller type.

This was performed perfectly by Stella Hunter and Corvin King in dual narration the voices each had to do. The different characters. Might have been better in full cast or duet due to lots of characters but otherwise so good.

I can’t wait to see what book 2 brings

Enjoyed this book, it played out like a crime show. I do feel like there was a lot of build up to the reveal at the end and I wish there was a little more closure but overall I enjoyed the story. The narrators did a great job in the audio version.

Ooo this was a pleasant surprise! At times a little cheesy/ cliche, but not enough to bring down the book’s vibe. This kept me interested and curious in the mystery the whole time. I had a little bit of a hard time keeping track of characters, but that could be due to listening to it instead of reading it. Definitely a thriller and gets a little dark at times, but also has a touch of romance! I really liked the romance side of it and I think it added to the story well. Ends on a cliffhanger, but a good one! Can’t wait for the next installment in this series!

This book completely pulled me in from the very first word. The story is layered with so many different twists and turns, a big web of suspense. What I loved most about it is you get ideas but not enough to actually figure it out, you're trying to untangle something but it's just right there out of your reach. Way to go JL Drake you absolutely slayed it with this book, I can't wait for the next one.

This one pulled me in immediately. From the very first chapters, I was completely locked in and ready to see where the story was going. There was a strong sense of tension right off the bat, and I went in expecting a gripping mix of suspense and solid investigative work.

Unfortunately, the middle is where things started to fall apart for me.

The pacing really slowed down, and instead of building on the intensity from the beginning, it kind of stalled out. I found myself waiting for something bigger to happen…especially when it came to the police procedural elements, which were honestly what I was most excited for. The detective work felt a little underdeveloped and glossed over, lacking the depth and detail that would’ve made it feel more realistic and engaging.

That said, I can’t deny that the ending did its job. It definitely picked the pace back up and brought back that sense of urgency I was missing. And now I’m sitting here with a ton of unanswered questions...

I’m intrigued enough to keep going with the series because I need to know how everything plays out. I just wish the middle had delivered the same level of intensity and detail as the beginning and end.

Dual Narration by Stella Hunter and Corvin King

Breathe Me In was a captivating listen. I was pulled into the storyline from the very beginning, where we get a glimpse of Bree and Brad's history with a traumatic experience that forever changed them. If you are a fan of true crime, suspense, drama, and a storyline filled with twists and turns, this may be the perfect book. Brad has a clingy ex, Sherry, who drove me a little crazy in the story, especially with how he doesn't fully cut her off. Overall, this story kept me entertained, guessing, and wanting more. The romance was tension-filled, as well as the workplace relationships. The author was great with her web of suspense and connections. I am looking forward to the next book because I need to know what happens next.

Stella Hunter and Corvin King gave outstanding dual performances. They brought these characters to life and enhanced the story and emotions throughout. An easy listen that was entertaining and kept me on my toes guessing.

Breathe Me In was an enjoyable mix of romantic suspense, mystery and second chance romance. The story grabbed my attention from the beginning, and I was excited to find out what really happened all those years ago.
Bree and Brad had great chemistry, and I liked seeing them reconnect after so much time apart.
The mystery kept me guessing with plenty of twists, and every time I thought I had figured it out, the story surprised me. I also enjoyed the emotional side of the book, as both characters were carrying painful memories and had to learn to trust each other again.
At times, I would have liked a little more focus on the investigation, as the romance often took centre stage. There were also quite a few characters to keep track of.
Saying that, I found this to be a fast paced and engaging read. The ending definitely left me wanting the next book sooner rather than later and I can't wait to continue the series.

Oh wow, I enjoyed this one a lot! Leads a little more romantic suspense to me (my fav!). The story was great and kept unfolding throughout but it was the underlying romance that kept me hooked. The ending was very intriguing and its clear the story is going to continue in the next book!

Oh este libro fue TODO una sorpresa, a ver, que me esperaba un thriller con solo un poquito de romance pero me dio todo: suspenso, romance, pueblo pequeño y una historia que me dejó queriendo MÁS.

La historia de Bree y Brad empieza fuerte, ellos de adolescentes presenciando cómo alguien se deshace de dos cuerpos, literal el libro empieza así tal cual lo dice la sinopsis, ahora bien, luego de eso su amistad se ve un poco resquebrajada y se separan ya que Bree se va del pueblo, hasta allí se va entiendo todo pero ella regresa ya que la necesitan (es investigadora privada) para ayudar a atrapar a un asesino y tiene que trabajar con Brad.

La historia transcurre rápida, te mantiene leyendo y agenda a las páginas porque mientras más piensas que “es es el asesino” boom, todo cambia de una manera que todas tus teorías se van al desagüe; la amistad entre estos dos se fortalece pero también surgen sentimientos entre ellos que siempre estuvieron.

Si tengo un “pero” con esta historia y fue el tema de la ex esposa de Brad, siento que ese drama me sacó un poco de la historia cuando con una sola conversación se habría podido solucionar todo.

Como dije, me sorprendió que tuviera un romance como complemento principal, porque fue bueno, aunque por momentos quería agarrar a los personajes y darles una buena sacudida.

Ese final me dejó queriendo más y ahora me toca esperar al próximo año para poder leerlo y dios, termina en un cliffhanger que válgame dios, demasiado BUENO.

Fue una buena historia que me mantuvo leyendo y pasando un buen rato.

Oh, this book was a TOTAL surprise. I mean, I was expecting a thriller with just a little bit of romance, but it gave me everything: suspense, romance, a small town, and a story that left me wanting MORE.

Bree and Brad’s story starts off strong as teenagers, they witness someone getting rid of two bodies. The book literally begins just as the synopsis says. However, after that, their friendship gets a little strained, and they drift apart because Bree leaves town. Up to that point, I get it but then she comes back because they need her (she’s a private investigator) to help catch a killer, and she has to work with Brad.

The story moves quickly; it keeps you reading and turning the pages because just when you think, “That’s the killer” and boom everything changes in a way that sends all your theories down the drain. The friendship between these two grows stronger, but feelings that were always there also begin to surface.

If I have one “but” about this story, it’s the whole issue with Brad’s ex-wife I feel like that drama pulled me out of the story a bit, when a single conversation could have resolved everything.

Like I said, I was surprised that it had a romance as a central plotline, because it was good though at times I wanted to grab the characters and give them a good shake.

That ending left me wanting more, and now I have to wait until next year to read the next one and oh my gosh, it ends on a cliffhanger that, my goodness, is just too GOOD.

It was a good story that kept me reading and had me enjoying myself.

Small town police procedural, mystery-thriller that reads like the comfort shows I watch?

Sign me up.

I absolutely ate this story up.

Bree and Brad, the FMC and MMC respectively, I enjoyed learning about them throughout. From their history, to what they dealt with in their time apart and then also, the reconnection in the current timeline, it was all handled spectacularly.

I did not like Brad's ex wife. Sherry, but that's kind of the point. She grated on my nerves as much as she did Brad, and I am not ashamed to admit there was a small part of me that hoped she would end up one of the victims, lol Like, how many times can you be told to go away before it sticks, lady, goodness.

And that is a testament to the author, because if I don't care about your characters, it won't work, not for the way I read. And I felt a whole hell of a lot here, even if with Sherry it was irritation lol

Need more of Kennedy, for sure. So in terms of hopes for future books, please more Kennedy.

The writing style was fast paced, but there were moments in between the action where you were also able to learn more about the families, have connections between characters shown, and also at the same time further the plot along where it didn't feel overwhelming and it didn't slow the speed down. This is another way the author handled things brilliantly here, especially for a first book, in my opinion.

I have questions, but where that would normally bother me with this type of story, it doesn't here because I know this is book 1. There will be more and there will be answers to them I feel in the next instalment, especially with that ending. Another tactic by the author that works. It makes me want to come back.

And come back I will. For the town, for the people, for the answers. All of it.

If you like thriller/mystery/police type stories, with some romance sprinkled in, and more to the point, romance that fits with the plot and doesn't entirely take away from it, you should love this. If you like fast paced stories, again, you should enjoy this. And if, like me, you have read this author before (even if in my case it's been awhile), you should definitely enjoy this.

It all worked and worked tremendously well.

Mixed Emotions

This book had been on my list to read for quite a while, so I finally decided to dive in. So as a whole, I have very mixed results. If I based it strictly off of the suspense, mystery, and thriller portion this would be a 4.5 book for me, however the author chose to throw in what I feel is random intimacy scenes that took you out of the flow of the book. I felt personally they were very unnecessary and it just didn’t vibe at all. When I pick up a suspense type book, that’s what I’m looking for. I’m looking for murder, mystery, crime, suspense, and a thrill. I don’t mind a relationship happening inside of that book. I often welcome it. I like to see a couple get together or if they’re already married and are working a case together no issues with that part. However, what I do struggle with is having scenes in the book that just don’t have anything to do with what’s happening in the book. I understand that two of the characters have had feelings for each other, I understand that there’s some romance that may be brewing, and I liked them together in that sense. I thought that they were compatible and I thought that there was a really good connection, but I could live without scenes about a crotch getting tighter. I don’t feel that it adds anything to the story, I don’t feel that it enhances the story, and honestly, I found it super weird and uncomfortable. I thought this book had excellent potential if those scenes were not in it. if I want those kinds of “ sexual type scenes“ I pick up a romance book. I intend to read book 2, which it looks like maybe comes out in January because again I really liked Bradley, I really liked Bree, and I really enjoyed all of the side characters. I hope that book 2 dives a little bit more into the friendships with the other officers, and dives a little bit more into her family. As long as you are prepared for random scenes that are trying to be sexy, but aren’t, I think you’ll enjoy this book just for the crime and mystery portion alone.

Bree and Brad were just teenagers when they went through a traumatic experience together. Bree coped by running away from her small town and never looking back. Now, Brad is a detective in their hometown, and he needs Bree's help to solve a serial killer case, forcing them to work in close proximity once again.

This was a fun blend of thriller, romance, and small-town mystery. For me, the mystery was by far the strongest and most compelling element, and it was what kept me reading! The tense atmosphere from the very beginning really set the tone for the story, and Bree and Brad's shared past added an extra layer of intrigue. The romance wasn't quite as strong for me. I didn't feel that their history was developed enough to fully support the amount of emotional baggage between them. I also grew a little tired of Brad's back-and-forth with his ex, and a lot of the romantic moments didn't quite land for me. The middle of the story also lost a bit of momentum and felt somewhat drawn out. The ending, however, really pulled me back in. The pacing picked up, everything started coming together, and we got an intriguing glimpse of what's to come in the next book.

Readers who enjoy romantic suspense and small-town mysteries will likely have a great time with this one. As for me, I'm excited to see where the overarching mystery surrounding Bree and Brad goes next!

As the first installment of the Wired to Kill series, Brad and Bree were friends in high school who literally stumbled across a serial killer in the woods one day. That day changed their lives forever. Fast forward thirteen years and Brad is a detective in their hometown and Bree is a private investigator called in by his boss to help catch a killer as bodies turn up.

The connection between the FMC and MMC was easy and electric. This is a true romantic suspense full of angst between the characters that is perfect for fans of Nora Roberts’ most recent works. While I would have liked to see more interaction or connections with the Barbed Wire Killer as the story developed, I think this was a really great start to the series and has me on the hook waiting for book two! *Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review!

This was so good, I couldn’t stop. It’s been a while since I read a good psychological suspenseful thriller and I really enjoyed this one.

Based in a small town between two high school friends (almost lovers) Bree & Brad who share trauma/near death experience that changed them and their relationship which in turn causes a split in the friendship down the line.

They are later reunited as adults who have to work a case together while still having intense chemistry/feelings for each other but can’t act on it. I loved the chemistry and yearning between the two main characters. The pace and flow was great and I love how the author kept you wondering and guessing. I must add that I wanted to throttle Cheryl 😂

Warning, it’s cliffhanger-ish meaning you will need to read book 2 and I can’t wait!!!

I have read good books lately. Great even. Books I have read so quickly I have practically inhaled them and obsessed over them. This one, however, it was next level good.

The way it was written was exceptional. I could see the whole story unfolding like a movie very clearly in my head. Drake grabbed my attention from the very first page, and the chokehold only got stronger as the story went on.

I cannot wait for the next installment. Seriously, anxiously awaiting.

Breathe Me In is a thriller with a light romance element mixed in. The story starts with a CRAZY shared event that Bree and Brad experience as kids.
