If you loved The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, this novel is RIGHT up there for me. I’m so glad I’ve now discovered Soraya M. Lane. Her writing was beautiful, emotional, and completely immersive.
This was such a painful and heartbreaking read at times, but also full of hope, love, and the idea of found family. Following the journey of these three women through the excruciating realities of WWII had me totally engrossed. I was fascinated by their stories and more than a little teary-eyed throughout. One of those books that really pulls you in emotionally and stays with you after you finish the final page.
This was my first novel by Soraya M. Lane, and as soon as I finished, I immediately went to find more of her work. Her writing is deeply emotional, powerful, and completely captivating—I couldn’t put this book down and finished it in just two days.
The story follows three women—Emma, her daughter Aletta, and Chloe—who, despite not all being related by blood, form an unbreakable bond that defines what family truly means. Set against the harrowing backdrop of Ravensbrück, the novel sheds light on the atrocities endured there, while also telling a moving story of resilience, hope, and survival.
The dual timeline, shifting between past and present, is handled beautifully, with most of the focus on the past. It made the story feel incredibly vivid and real—I could almost feel the pain, strength, and courage of these women.
A heartbreaking yet ultimately uplifting read that will stay with me for a long time.
Thank you to NetGalley, Amazon Publishing UK, and Lake Union Publishing for the ARC.
This book was fantastic, I loved it. How can you love such a heartbreaking and horrific story? It was the love, hope and companionship being tested over very brutal circumstances that made this book so good. It was very sensitively written and this had me hanging onto every word, I was going through every emotion available as the women fought so hard to stay alive to gain their freedom. This is my first book by Soraya M Lane and it won’t be the last. The writing style was perfect for me. Totally deserves five big fat stars! Highly recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for this advance copy. Publication date 15 June 2026.
I received an ARC of The Underground Sisters by Soraya M. Lane from NetGalley, and I genuinely don’t think I’ll ever forget this book.
This was a complete emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end. It pulled me in immediately and never let go. By the time I reached the epilogue, I was completely wrecked—the last two paragraphs hit me so hard I just sat there trying to process everything I had just read.
What stood out most to me was the relationship between the women. Watching them grow into something deeper—into a true sisterhood—was incredibly moving. The development felt natural, meaningful, and so full of heart.
This story is devastating in the best way. It’s filled with pain, hope, love, and resilience, and you can feel every bit of it as you read. The emotional depth of this book is what makes it unforgettable.
The writing itself is beautiful. It flows so effortlessly, and the pacing is absolutely perfect. I could picture everything so clearly—it genuinely felt like watching a movie play out in my head.
You can tell the author is deeply passionate about the time period and the stories being told here. That passion comes through in every page and adds so much weight and authenticity to the story.
This is easily one of the best books I’ve ever read, and I will be recommending it to everyone. I will absolutely be picking up more from this author in the future.
This book is powerful, emotional, and unforgettable.
The story tells of 3 woman brought together by horrific consequences, some of which can be difficult to read. Chloe, Aletta, and Emma (Aletta's mother) find themselves at Ravensbruk which is one of concentration camps set up by the Nazi's. What these people endured was beyond human indecency and I pray that each one of them hold a special place in Heaven. Even though this may be hard to read at times, it's a story that needs to be told about their survival and the will to live. May humanity continue to remember and learn from this. Be sure to read the author's notes at the end.
(A note to the author) Thank you for telling their story. Your book may take us a few hours to read but I know that hours/days/months of research and travel went into this story. And what we've read, you've gone over several times beforehand. Most of these stories wouldn't be told if it weren't for you. History books can't touch on human emotion like you do. This book reminded me very much of the books that Elie Wiesel wrote about his captivity during the Holocaust. Just as he gives you the personal insight, this story puts you right beside those women. Netgalley offered me an ARC, which I'm grateful for but Soraya should get flowers for this one.
I was lucky to o be given the opportunity for this advanced copy 🩷
From the very beginning, you’re pulled into such an emotional and powerful story of resilience, sisterhood, and survival. The bond between the characters is beautifully written — you genuinely feel everything they go through, and I found myself completely invested in their journey.
It’s one of those books that slowly builds and then hits you right in the heart. I had tears in my eyes by the end, and that doesn’t happen often. The storytelling is so vivid and atmospheric, you can picture every moment. The ending though 🩷🩷🩷 A truly moving and unforgettable read — definitely one I’ll be recommending.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this in advance.
Once again, Soraya Lane weaves a story that stirs the heart and wreaks my emotions for the day. But I will always reach for one of her books!
Emma, Aletta, and Chloe may be fictional women, but their story is not. Set during World War II, The Underground Sisters tells of their lives before being arrested, their time in the Nazi camp Ravensbrück, and their lives after.
A story of friendship, selflessness, hope when all seems lost, and undeniable bravery, it was everything I hoped it would be and have come to expect from Soraya’s writing. Thank you for telling the story of these women.
This was a “Read Now” ARC from NetGalley. Publish date set for June 2026.
I really enjoyed this story. It moved quickly from the start and drew me in from the beginning. While it was emotional, it also highlighted themes of bravery, selflessness, hope for a better future, and the strength to survive.
The story focuses on three women—Emma, her daughter Aletta, and Chloe—who, despite not being related by blood, form a strong family bond. Throughout the story, they support, stand by one another and help to make a better life for others.
Thank you to Amazon Publishing and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are my own.
This story details the lives of three women, a young woman Chloe, Aletta and her mother Emma. The latter is a wonderfully strong character who supports her own daughter and “adopts” Chloe. It’s a harrowing tale of Ravensbruck (Nazi concentration camp) and what occurred there. But there’s hope and resilience, even in that awful place of such truly despicable atrocities. Carefully and sensitively written, it’s a poignant and emotional account of an important time in our history. I am a great fan of Soraya’s writing. Highly recommend
Such a great WWII novel. Gosh It is heartbreaking and tells such inspiring stories of what these women went through. I learned something new while reading this and found myself doing further research on the topic because how incredible it was. I highly suggest reading the author's note at the end. This is a must read for anyone who loves Historical Fiction especially WWII focused stories. I cannot give it enough praise!
I’m a big fan of Soraya, so I was really looking forward to her latest novel. It’s a harrowing, immersive read that’s hard to put down, even when you might want to look away. This isn’t light, escapist fiction, but it feels important—rooted in real experiences and told in a way that pulls you right into the story. I learned a lot from reading it, and I especially appreciated the author’s note at the end, where she honours the women and stories that inspired the book.
One of the best historical fiction books I have read in a long time. It makes you connect with the characters and empathise with the horrors they are facing. It gives a realistic view of the events that occurred during this horrific period and shows the strength these individuals had to carry on and survive. I enjoyed the writing style and how it made me feel whilst it connected with more recent times to encourage us not to forget these horrors but to learn from them.
Another heart-wrenching, informative and well-researched novel from one of my favourite authors! 5 super easy stars from me. Soraya once again takes facts and delivers them in a sensitively written story of hope, suffering, survival, and the strength of love and friendship. I finished this book weeks ago, and I can't stop thinking about it.
Thank you to NetGalley, Amazon Publishing UK and Soraya Lane for the digital ARC. My review is voluntary, and all opinions are my own.
I love this author's books. They go straight for your heart. This book was heartbreaking, with strong characters, dark thiings happening, but with a glimmer of hope. A must read. Thank you to netgalley for letting me read this arc in exxhange for an honest opinion
Another book of Soraya Lane that touches your heart, the story was immersive and captivating. I really enjoyed the book. With so much thanks to NetGalley and to the publisher Amazon Publishing UK for the ARC
A heartwarming novel about two women and their friendship while they navigate the horrific conditions in Ravensbruck. Each in this prison for different reasons. The author notes are a must read. Soraya has a huge backlog of historical fiction, which are my library.
I’ve enjoyed Lane’s books in the past, and this one was no different. The resistance fiction sub-genre of historical fiction can get a bit samey-samey, but this one stood on its own as well
