There was so much going on in this one, from the killer, to new family members, to changes in living status. All of it painted with deceit. I felt for Lazarus, it seemed like he had the most going on, paid a big price, potentially gained something as long as he doesn't continue to screw it up. But it was the betrayal and deceit at the end that seemed to really mark him. I don't fault him for what he did, some people do need to die.
Piper was facing her own battles and while her first instinct was a good one, a person yearns for what they didn't have. I feel like this was the biggest betrayal for her. The lost of what if and what she could have had.

1st: I wish publishers would make it more obvious the current book is book 3 in a series.
2nd: obviously I felt reading book 1 and 2 would have improved my reading experience.
Since this was my first book in the series, I didn't have all the back story on the main characters. This made it impossible to feel anything for them. In fact I found Lazarus, a main character, a ridiculously bad detective and somewhat of a man of steel, since he seems to survive all attacks and stitches bursting. Of which, there are many...too many. That was a bit over the top. He is also a very cold individual. Readers prefer to like and care about the characters. I couldn't have cared less if he hurt or if he was killed.
There are several side stories that were interesting. Piper is a very interesting character and her side story was very interesting, with some surprising twists. Many of the side stories I found interesting. But basically the serial killer/hitman stuff was a bit over the top.
Maybe if I had read the previous 2 books in the series it would change my opinion.
3rd: the narration was excellent! Just the right tone for this dark mystery. All characters had distinct voices and were very expressive.
Narration helped a lot.
4th: My recommendation, dont touch this book unless you have read the previous 2.

A Case Becomes Quite Personal for Lazarus Holloway
Robert and Stephanie Haig are walking next to a cemetery on a dark, rainy night. They hear a loud, old truck speeding towards them. They try to get out of the way, but Robert is hit. The truck's license plate is URMINE. Stephanie goes to him. He is severely hurt. His leg is broken between his hip and knee. She dials 911. They hear the truck returning. She runs and hides. She calls 911. When she looks back, she sees that the truck is gone, along with Robert's body.
This novel has many captivating moving parts. There are four threads. There is the overarching thread for the investigation of Robert Haig’s murder. The scope of this thread grows as more victims are discovered. Piper Danes spends much time accompanying and helping Lazarus Holloway in the murder investigations. There are plenty of difficulties for Lazarus. He ignores the doctor's orders for the serious wound he received at the end of the previous novel. Also in that novel, he rescues a teenage girl. He discovers that she is his daughter. A very entangled relationship starts because Lazarus never learned parenting skills. As more murders occur, he recognizes that they have connections to him. Lastly, serious issues erupt in his relationship with Piper. The next thread provides the efforts of Piper Danes, a guardian ad litem, to protect a young child of a man who will be spending time in prison. The third thread involves Judge Dawn Hope and her efforts to become the next senator from Nevada. In this effort, she works with an elusive drug dealer known as Deadeye. The novel’s pace appears fast because the author uses short, rapid chapters. While Lazarus and Piper are the main narrators of most chapters, several other narrators are used, especially for the murders. I did not experience any confusion following the action in the threads. With the numerous interlocking threads, my interest was quickly captured and maintained to the end.
This novel has one of the richest backgrounds and B-storylines that I have read. Lazarus has the lead in the thread with Piper, but Piper tries to take the lead when Lazarus isn’t paying attention to his health. The other two threads are the events between Lazarus and his daughter, Keri, and Piper and her newly discovered sister, Selene. These two threads provide a wealth of background on both Lazarus and Piper. Each of these threads is complex, dynamic, and well-integrated into the main storyline. These last two threads also migrate to C-storylines, as they show changes in Piper's and Lazarus’s personalities. I really enjoyed this aspect of this novel.
Only one aspect could cause readers to stop reading this novel. Only two references to intimate scenes are present. There are several discussions on drug addiction and trafficking, but they should not rise to being an issue for most readers. There is some objectionable language, but this novel is the first in years that didn’t drop an F-bomb. The only issue is the violence. There are several lengthy, descriptive fights between the Bone Stalker and Lazarus. The Bone Stalker’s handiwork is described at the crime scenes or during autopsies. I have only seen this detail in horror novels. This novel is the third in the series. Having read the prior novels is not necessary, but is advisable.
The aspect of this novel that I did not like was the ending. While I understand it, I was disappointed. One of the main storyline threads was not concluded. I wonder if there will be a fourth novel to resolve this thread. I liked the intensity of the internal conflict in the B-storyline threads. I liked it when Lazarus figured out the Bone Stalker's goal. I have read eight of this author's previous novels. All but one were obtained through NetGalley. I purchased the other. Even with my above dislikes, I highly recommend reading this novel. The author is one of my Must-Read authors. I am looking forward to his next novel. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and rate it with five stars.

The kidnapped bride, 16-year-old Keri Bines, is revealed by her Mom, Amanda, to be the daughter of none other than Detective Lazarus Holloway. Amanda had been his companion years prior. Suspicions arise as to motive, means and opportunity in the abduction vis-a-vis vengeance against the detective, even as the entire LVPD force is mobilized to locate and rescue the teen.

The Bone Stalker
by Victor Methos is the third novel in the legal and crime thriller Vegas Shadows series. It once again features Detective Lazurus Halloway who works for the Las Vegas’s Criminal Intelligence Unit and Piper Danes, who was once an endangered youth and is now a court-appointed representative who acts on behalf of children or vulnerable adults in legal proceedings. This book focused more on the crime thriller side of the series.
The murderer known as “The Bone Stalker” is brutal, calculated, strong, and ritualistic. He removes specific bones from his victims’ bodies and the bodies all tie back to Lazarus in some way. As Lazarus investigates with the help of Piper, they discover more connections.
Piper is good at connecting with children and has a compulsion to save children in need. She’s empathetic with victims, smart, curious, kindhearted, and driven. She wants to prove that she and others can make a difference in the world. However, she is often guarded around adults and hates managing people. Lazarus is blunt, logical, sees the world as a puzzle to be solved, and is passionate about his job. He finds patterns in data that others miss and is good at piecing together hidden connections and has a photographic memory.
The storyline is gripping and grabbed my attention in the prologue. As the storyline progresses, readers get insight into the backstories of Lazarus and Piper and how that affects their thoughts and actions towards others. It’s medium-paced as it covers the investigation with periodic action scenes and twists followed by a heart-pounding conclusion. It’s a story with plenty of layers, some of which are quite dark, disturbing, and unsettling at times. The book was a page-turner that kept me engaged throughout the storyline. This book resolves the major cliffhanger from book two. Various themes are woven throughout the story including solitude, family, loneliness, corruption, murder, trust, and much more.
Overall, this thriller was suspenseful, tragic, and intense. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. Combining a police procedural, child advocacy, a mystery, and an action-packed ending makes this novel is a must-read for those who enjoy legal and crime thrillers with a dark twist and characters that aren’t always likeable.

Well whenever I see this author I hit request and usually I am never disappointed once again I was delighted with the outcome.
This series is brutal, pretty violent and you do need to throw your disbelief out the window usually… but it has a bit of everything.

I really like Lazarus and Piper, they are mates and they piss each other off but always throw each other on the line for each other makes it interesting to read. I do wonder each book if they will end up together but I do think it would ruin the friend chemistry and Lazarus is so broken that I don’t think anyone could put up with him hahaha.
Overall this book did not disappoint at all, I was really glad how it went and it wasn’t predictable which i enjoyed. I loved the ending I wasn’t expecting it… it was almost like a movie thats ended with a little secret scene… really good quality!!!

* Depressing Horror Story *
THE BONE STALKER is not a book that I enjoyed. It is not a book that will appeal to everyone, but I recognize that it will appeal to a select audience, and so what was a 2-star reading experience for me will be a 4-star one for that select group. Consequently, I am giving it a 3-star rating, but this rating comes with a warning to most of my friends who prefer mysteries and thrillers that are fundamentally optimistic. The entire storyline is extremely depressing.
In greater detail:
1) This is the third novel in the Vegas Shadows series, and it simply continues without explaining what occurred in the first two books. I often jump into a series in the middle, but I do not recommend doing so in this one. It does not work well as a standalone.
2) The blurb describes this as a "serial killer thriller", with emphasis on finding this killer. Yes, it is a serial killer crime story, but the main emphasis of the narrative is how the three main characters—Detective Lazarus Halloway, Guardian ad Litem Piper Danes, and Judge Hope Dawson—deal with their personal misery. All three had damaging childhoods, experiences that affect how they carry on in adulthood, and each has developed a different coping strategy. New challenges are thrown at them in this book. The serial killer is (mostly) a hidden horror figure, and when finally unmasked is just a caricature.
3) The narrative is extremely depressing. The word "pain" is repeated over and over. It refers, mainly, to physical pain but also sometimes is used in reference to emotional pain, because all three main protagonists suffer from both. The intensity of this depressing narrative is what gives the book its strength, but also—for me—made it almost unreadable.
4) There is one plot twist near the ending regarding what is behind the serial killer's murderous spree, but frankly by the time I got to it, I didn't care. Other readers who are not as affected as I was by the dispiriting storyline will possibly find this a good reason to continue on with the series.
5) I am not the least bit tempted to read the other books in the Vegas Shadows series. One horrific experience is enough.

Bruised and battered from his latest encounter, Detective Lazarus Holloway awakens in the hospital to learn not only the gruesome aftermath of the case, but also that he is stuck in the hospital recuperating for the next few weeks. Eventually, he is released into the care of friend and GAL Piper Danes, but that doesn't prevent him from showing up at CIU despite strict orders from his doctor and being on medical leave. While at the office, he receives a report that a close friend has been brutally murdered, which results in a lone and wild goose chase after a deranged serial killer.
Similar to the first and second installments, Detective Lazarus finds himself mired in a criminal matter, in which he ropes GAL Piper Danes and a few old cop buddies on the dl, that is linked to a corrupt overarching force; one who is single-handedly cementing the moniker 'Sin City' as its eternal namesake.
The third installment starts off fast-paced and entertaining, then peters out somewhere midway when the case takes a turn. The first novel in the series is the best, with the rest following in consecutive order. Much like the second installment, the writing is still clunky and does not feel as if it was written by the author. Once again, the redundant points made in short chapters (e.g., how many times is Lazarus going to almost black out from addiction and his kidney surgery?), as well as the characters losing more of their likable traits. Additionally, it felt like this novel was as sparse as the second regarding Judge Dawson who is supposed to be the mastermind behind the plots of the last two novels. I would have preferred hearing more about Dawson than anything involving Keri or newcomer Selene. Leave the family drama at home
Thus, the third installment unfortunately did not pay off suspense-wise in the way I had hoped. While there were some intriguing passages, this may be the weakest of the authors' series. I recommend reading one of his older standalones instead. Overall, three stars.

Eventually, Holloway's case comes to a head, with some unbelievable reveals.
I'm still not sure how I feel about this book. It holds all the hallmarks of a Victor Methos story: sharp writing, extremely flawed characters, and Vegas as a character. The case of the bone stalker is just weird enough to keep the pages turning--and is made more compelling by the fact that Holloway has to deal with his alcohol addiction, desire to be out in the field while his body is still needing to heal, and having his daughter in his life. Piper's story felt less interesting in this book; her conversations with Selene, her sister, felt one note--they didn't move the story or the characters forward until a big reveal near the end that was surprising but didn't add much to the overall plot.
This might be Methos' most gruesome story that I've read. Don't eat while reading this, and for anyone who has difficulty with explicit descriptions of bodily harm, this might be one to skip. I found myself physically recoiling at many of the scenes, especially in the climactic series of events. This story is sticking with me and I'm definitely interested to see what happens with Holloway and Danes next.

The characters’ backstories and relationships are so well developed that it’s obvious there are earlier stories behind them. That said, the book is written in a way that made it easy to follow, even jumping in at book three.
The audiobook was well done, and the narrator did a strong job making it easy to distinguish between characters and follow the action.
One of my favorite aspects of the book was the relationship between Lazarus and Piper Danes. Piper is his investigative partner, specializing in cases involving children, and also serves as his guardian ad litem following the events of the previous book. I appreciated how much they care for and support each other without the relationship turning romantic, which is a refreshing change from many books in this genre. Detective Lazarus Holloway and guardian ad litem Piper Danes return in the third installment of the Vegas Shadows series. I would highly recommend reading the first two books in order to understand all the connections between the characters and events of the third.
Lazarus has dealt with some very unsavory criminals in his career, but none quite like this. Dubbed “The Bone Stalker”, this killer focuses on the bones of his victims and leaving messages for Lazarus at each scene. While investigating a potential person of interest, he notices a young boy at the scene and drags Piper into his mess once again. Only this time, Piper’s attention is torn between being there for Lazarus and dealing - or not dealing with - with the trauma of a woman claiming to be her sister appearing.
This story is contains all of the elements of a Methos thriller that I’ve come to love. The immediate case is particularly gory and twisted. It’s not for those with weak stomach. This was my first book in the Vegas Shadows series, and honestly, now I want to go back and read the first two.
I went into this one completely unfamiliar with Lazarus Holloway and Piper Danes, so it took me a little bit to get my bearings with the character relationships and references to previous events. Once I did, though, I was hooked.
The mystery kept me engaged from the beginning, and I found myself wanting to know not only who the Bone Stalker was, but why the murders seemed so connected to Lazarus. The story is definitely darker and more graphic than some of the thrillers I normally pick up, so readers who are sensitive to violence may want to check trigger warnings first.
I also really enjoyed the audiobook narration by Saskia Maarleveld. She did a great job bringing the story to life and keeping the tension high throughout the investigation.
What surprised me most was how invested I became in the characters despite jumping into the series at book three. Lazarus and Piper have an interesting dynamic, and by the end of the book I found myself wanting to know more about both of them.

This story begins with the disappearance of Lazarus's friend Boss. At this time Lazarus is recovering in ICU from a kidney issue. It is only later that Lazarus discovers what happened to Boss. At the same time we learn that Lazarus's daughter, Keri, is around and was in the room at the same time someone tried to attack Lazarus's equipment in his hospital room. After leaving the hospital he visits Boss's grave and looking around the area he discovers another body. Both bodies had bones removed from their bodies.
Lazarus refuses to take it easy and returns to work to try and find the killer. There seems to be some other issue at the same time this is going on and an unknown party wants Lazarus to be taken off an open case because it might point a finger at someone who has plans that would fail if it didn't happen. A suspect is arrested as the killer, but the person heading the investigation for another couple of similar killings wants Lazarus sidelined. Things get personal for those around Lazarus and require police protection. It finally gets to a point where Lazarus has discovered where the killer took Keri and heads to that location, but doesn't wait for backup before heading in.

When I started reading The Bone Stalker, I wasn't aware it was part of a series, so as I started listening to the book, I was prepared to be frustrated and give up because I had no clue who the main characters were.
However!
I am happy to say, I liked this book enough to keep reading.
Detective Lazarus Holloway is called in after a body is discovered, and bones are missing; then another body is found nearby, also with bones missing. And then come the bone sculptures.
Early on, you meet his daughter and learn she was involved in a past crime her father investigated; it isn't discussed much, but I am now curious enough to find the previous books and learn more about Detective Lazarus and his family, especially after someone close to him is killed in this book.
The author, Victor Methos, became a prosecutor for Salt Lake City after a friend of his was convicted of a crime he didn't commit. Mr. Methos then founded one of the top law firms in Utah. He won the Harper Lee Prize for his book "The Hallows," which I will be reading shortly after I read the two previous books in the Vegas Shadows series.
The narrator, Saskia Maarleveld, did an excellent job, kept the story moving. I was very impressed.
While I jumped in with book three, I recommend you start with book one and enjoy this great author.

Saskia Maarleveld remains undefeated 👑 This was my first time hearing her tackle a murder mystery with such a large cast and she absolutely crushed it. The raspy male cop voice?? FIREEEEE 🥵 The courtroom scene with Piper was another standout, she gave her such a confident, professional, no bs voice!
Also, I continue to be amazed at how good Saskia is at voicing younger boys. This is the second time I've heard her do it and honestly it blows my mind every time.
And the villain's voice??? NO THANK YOU 😭Genuinely creepy.

Victor Methos has become one of those authors I can count on for a fast paced thriller. His chapters are short, the story moves quickly, and he somehow develops his characters without pages of unnecessary description. I flew through this book.
Detective Lazarus Holloway continues to be my favorite part of this series. He’s flawed, tragic, and carrying more than any one person should, but you can tell how deeply he cares about the people around him. My heart broke for him throughout this book, especially with everything he loses. I just wanted him to catch a break.
I also really like Piper, and I’ll admit I was hoping this would finally be the book where something happened between her and Lazarus. The side story with Piper’s sister was another highlight and had a twist I didn’t see coming.
The ending was a little anticlimactic for me. I’m not sure if Victor Methos is setting up another book or wrapping up the series, but I was hoping for a little more closure, especially for Lazarus.
Overall, this was another great installment in the series. There were plenty of twists, the murders were definitely gruesome, and if you’re looking for a dark, fast-moving crime thriller with a detective you’ll genuinely care about, this series is worth reading.

THE BONE STALKER is the third installment of the Vegas Shadows book franchise. I was anxious to read it, because Lazarus is my favorite MMC (main male character). The main character, Lazarus, is so unlikable it was hard to keep listening. I kept waiting for him to have a redemption arc, but if there was one it was meniscal. Big trauma history which gave me some empathy toward him, but damn, it was tough. It is the third book in the series and I have not read the first two, but it seems he should have evolved some by book 3!
As for the storyline, it was enthralling. It kept me listening to unravel the mystery. It was filled with suspense and twists and a bit too much gore. If you have a queasy stomach you may want to pass on this one.
The female lead, Piper, was likable. She also had a big trauma history but wasn’t as much of a closed off asshole. She cared about others. His daughter, Carrie was also likable as she longed to get to know her emotionally distant father. He pretty much related things back to himself with a side note of caring if people he cared about were murdered in horrific ways.
The narration was good. Good voice differentiation of characters and a good pace throughout what must have been difficult scenes to read.

I received an ALC (advance listener copy) of this from NetGalley and started listening to it before I knew it was the third and final book in a series I haven't read. It is narrated by one of my favorite audiobook readers - Saskia Maarleveld - which, along with the beautiful cover, is why I requested access to the book. I began reading and by the time I realized it was #3 in a series, I was hooked on the story. I'll skip the synopsis, since I'm not sure what would be a spoiler. Suffice it to say this is an excellent book - worth reading even without knowing what happened in the first two books. But don't follow my example if you can help it. Read the rest of the series first. I'm going to circle back and read the other two now. It was that good. The writing reminds me of S.A. Cosby, but slightly less gory, and definitely more believable. I liked this more than Cosby. I'll be buying this series for our library.

This one caught my eye because it is based in Vegas and I live so near there! I didn’t realize it was a series when I started it but you don’t really need the other two to read this one. I am most definitely will be going back and reading those two though!

I loved the narration for this one. The narrator did a really good job differentiating between each character and bring each one to life. This helped me a lot when we were navigating between different POV’s.
Thought this was such a gripping thriller. This was pretty gruesome! It really reminded me of an episode of like criminal minds or something! Crime procedural but also a gritty thriller. Enjoyed both of our main characters and the introduction to Keri. His daughter who added another layer to Lazarus.

The third in the Vegas Shadows series and it really is necessary to have read the others first to have a good idea of what is going on. Lazarus is as troubled as ever as he pursues the grisly Bone Snatcher a seemingly superhuman killer with a penchant for extracting and chewing the bones of his victims.
As always Pierce is looking out for him and becomes inextricably intertwined in his pursuit of the killer.
There is fascinating human interest too as Lazarus is forced to take on board the responsibilities of fatherhood and Piper too is faced with an apparent long lost relative which helps her to reexamine her childhood.
It is a densely plotted and violent thriller which shocks and enthrals in equal proportions.
I enjoyed it immensely and was left wondering if there is more to come in this series.
