Season of Magic: A Witch Romance

Rate this book
The consort ritual demands a spark. She found a flame.

Rosa Sandoval is the prima-in-waiting of an old Arizona witch clan…and she’s suffocating. Bound by a centuries-old ritual that forces her to kiss strangers until a consort spark ignites, Rosa flees to Jerome, desperate to claim one afternoon of real choice. The last thing she expected was to end up breaking into a stranger’s pink house and falling asleep on his couch.

Shane McAllister is a gruff chef who owns his craft and hides his magic in the rhythms of a busy kitchen. When he discovers Rosa — a duty-bound witch with a rare gift — he knows he should turn her in. Instead, he offers her safety and, eventually, a job. Their partnership becomes something messier and more real than either of them planned…mentorship at the stove, evenings of soulful conversation, and a slow, stubborn love neither saw coming.

But the consort clock is ruthless. Rosa must decide whether to follow the path carved for her — or risk everything to choose Shane on her own terms. When one desperate kiss finally wakes magic neither of them expected, their love becomes the ultimate honor duty…or rewrite destiny.

A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Many reams of dead trees later, she’s happy to announce that her debut novel, Fringe Benefits, was published by Pink Petal Books on April 8, 2010. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the new journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Her paranormal novella, Playing With Fire, was released on August 5, 2010.

While Fringe Benefits is a straight contemporary romance, she writes in a variety of genres, including paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection.

After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor in addition to writing fiction. She lives with her husband and an explosively fluffy Pomeranian mix. Her house is pink, but don’t hold that against her.

This isn’t a story about finding your soulmate. It’s about becoming someone ready to choose them.
Season of Magic by Christine Pope is one of those rare romances that feels cozy and magical on the surface, but hits much deeper emotionally.
Rosa Sandoval is the future prima of her clan, and if she doesn’t find her consort before her twenty-first birthday, she’ll never reach her full power. The problem? She’s already kissed over thirty carefully chosen, magically approved candidates… and felt absolutely nothing.
Needing space from the pressure, she escapes to Jerome, Arizona, where she meets Shane McAllister, a talented (and slightly cranky) chef who is definitely not on the approved list.
What follows is a slow-burn, character-driven romance that is less about instant magical bonds and more about fear, self-doubt, and learning to trust yourself.
The real strength of this book is its focus on growth. Rosa has spent her life trying to be the perfect prima, hiding who she really is except through her art. Shane, despite his incredible talent, struggles with feeling like he’s not enough without magical validation. Their connection builds naturally through shared time, cooking, creativity, and quiet moments, which makes their relationship feel authentic and earned.
One of my favorite elements was how love is expressed through creativity. Shane’s cooking becomes a way of showing how deeply he understands Rosa, especially in a beautiful scene where he creates a tasting menu based on her childhood memories. Rosa’s art evolves alongside her emotional journey, reflecting her growth in a subtle but powerful way.
The most heartbreaking moment comes when Rosa overhears others questioning if something is “wrong” with her because she hasn’t formed a bond. That moment hits hard because it taps into such a real fear, the idea that maybe you’re the exception, the one person things won’t work out for.
This is a slow-burn romance with light-to-moderate spice, and when the consort bond finally happens, it feels completely earned. Not because the magic suddenly works, but because both characters finally step out of their fear and fully choose each other.
If you enjoy cozy paranormal romance, strong character development, and stories where emotional growth is just as important as the romance, I highly recommend Season of Magic.

SEASON OF MAGIC
CHRISTINE POPE

Review by Author Roy Murry

Rose is a witch, prima in waiting, who runs away from her responsibility of kissing men ages twenty-one to twenty-four, to find her consort. She finds her soulmate in Shaine, a twenty-eight-year-old warlock, who belongs to another clan.

Their relationship is a romance made in heaven, but it's too long in the making because there is no MAGIC, a feeling Rose needs to fulfill her responsibility. MAGIC must happen.

This witchy romance will overwhelm the reader. I wanted to stop reading about adults who let a religion called MAGIC control their lives. I kept on reading, and the story ended the way romances always do.

The writing keeps a romance lover on the edge – will she or won't she lose her virginity, a key MAGIC (Rose's consciousness) controls? Sleeping together does not count.

SEASON is a good novel, but only for romance lovers. Everyone else, stay away. LOL

I absolutely loved this story! A prima-in-waiting of an old Arizona witch clan and a chef who’s a little gruff but also magical! Their story is intriguing, messy, cozy and has a wonderful slow burn romance that draws you in hook, line and sinker. Rosa and Shane are fantastic characters and their journey is emotional, rewarding and so so good!
