My heart has never ever raced this fast as it did during the few last pages omg
I loved this book a lot. It was a bit different than I use to read and it was a quick read (well it would've been unless I wouldn't have been so busy with other stuff). This was the first book I've ever read from the author and this shall not be the last, I fell in love with the way she writes, it's so good! I would've given this book 5/5 but it was missing a spark of fast pacing and other things like that.

This was a gem of a find & really enjoyable reading. It was fast paced without seeming rushed and had meaty characters you could sink your teeth into, which is often hard to sustain in a novella sized, small town mystery. A very current, topical plot line was handled well ensuring the reader didn't get bogged down with technical points or felt the writing of the issue was getting "preachy". This work has certainly ensured that I want to read further into the series to find out more about our female protagonist, and what clashes will happen between her and her childhood sweetheart while her husband is trying to cope with PTSD back at home.
What an intriguing start to the Kate Hamilton series, darkness, deception, danger and the horror of true tragedy mar the start of Kate's internship. Someone has gone to great trouble to weave a very tangled web aimed to trap Kate, but she is far too smart and questions everything... inquisitive or cynical? I read this on Kindle Unlimited and look forward to more in the series.
A young woman whose marriage has hit a rough patch returns to her hometown and helps local authorities investigate a series of unexpected deaths.
Fiona Quinn manages to pack a lot of story into this novella without making the pacing feel rushed. Kate Hamilton, forced to leave her home in Boston due to her soldier husband's PTSD, returns to the small Virginia town where she grew up at around the same time as her ornery Uncle Owen dies of what seems like a heart attack. Kate is there to work as a CSI intern with the local police department. Tim Gibbons, her supervisor, also happens to be her first love. He's now married with children, but he's still obviously attracted to her. Their history and a tangled situation with a neighbor interested in opening a lucrative mining operation mean that Kate is stepping into a snake pit of conflict and competing agendas. It's against this chaotic background that she discovers suspicious connections between several recent deaths--including her Uncle Owen's.
Scarborough is depicted with such detail that I felt I could locate the place on a map. All the quaint beauties of small-town life bump up against the seething resentments and never-ending feuds that often infect such insular places. The town is populated with a nice mix of expected southern characters--the rich girl whose sparkling life isn't what it seems, the bigger-than-life politician who may or may not be for sale, the blustering high school bully who grew into a threatening schemer, the local busybody who spreads venomous rumors as unfounded as they are damaging. Though readers will be familiar with all of these "types," Quinn makes each one interesting and a bit more complicated than they might appear.
The romantic tension between Kate and Tim is perfectly balanced. We sense that there is something there, but this potential for sparks doesn't undermine our belief in Kate's feelings for or loyalty to Ryan, her troubled husband. Kate and Tim's backstory feeds a lot of present tension. It would have been a little more exciting if we got to meet Tim's insecure wife. She makes a brief appearance and is referred to, but that's about it.
I'm on the fence about Quinn's ending. I don't want to spoil it for you. I'll just say that I expected Kate to be the one who unveiled the killer. She closes on the How and the Why of the killings. The Who is discovered and neutralized by the least likely character in the book. Looking back, this is a clever move, as (along with Kate) we are forced to completely reevaluate our alliances. At the time I first read it, though, I felt a little cheated. The discomfort was momentary.
MINE is a well-paced mystery packed with character and suspense.
A very fast paced story. I could not put this book down.
Kate returns to her small hometown to lick her wounds. Her husband has PTSD and it is not safe for her to live with him. She intends to stay with her aunt and uncle, but arrives in time for her uncle's funeral. It appears he has suffered a heart attack.
Kate is a school teacher. She is going to be a CSI intern in Scarborough for the summer. Nothing ever happens in this town so it should be slow paced summer.
No sooner has Kate attended her uncle's funeral when 4 teenagers die of overdoses. That is closely followed by a failed suicide attempt and another heart attack.
Can Kate help her ex-boyfriend, Tim get to the bottom of these suspicious deaths?
A short mystery that will keep your interest. If you are a mystery fan, this one will keep you guessing right up until the very end.
Give this one a try and let me know what you think.
This novella is the story of schoolteacher Kate Hamilton, a woman who was asked to leave her marital home by her husband as he worked through his PTSD. Her uncle’s passing gave her a good excuse to go home and spend time with her aunt Emma, along with a school project she prearranged. The sheriff is her old high school beau, and he’s agreed that she can do a summer internship with his force for her master’s program in criminology.
As it turns out, her sleepy hometown isn’t so sleepy. One person after another dies, putting her and her old flame together in pressure cooker situations. But this villain better watch out. When troubles come, small towns close rank and look out for each other.
Another fine offering from a talented writer

Crackerjack Mystery by Fiona Quinn. Mine is a powerful, page-turner, about what happens to a school teacher CSI in-training, taking some space from PTSD stricken husband, when she returns to her hometown. Mayhem - murder, snarky characters, snappy dialogue, nicely inserted references to past relationships, conspiracy - are clearly more than coincidences for Kate, though not to anyone else. Love the superbly researched, crisp plot-linehint complete with subtle hints, and a smashing ending. I have to read the other Home Town Murders.
Mine was a very gripping tale of a woman who returns to her home town due to personal issues. There she visits her aunt and helps her cope with the loss of her husband, Kate's uncle. Things start to go out of control when people start turning up dead, and with Kate's background dives into the investigation to assist the town's detective, her old high school boyfriend. Who committed the murders? Why? Is Kate next? Read this wonderful novella to find out! Ms. Quinn writes well rounded characters, interesting dialogue, and spins a mystery that will keep you on the edge of your chair!
Now i want more. How are Tim's and Kate's working relationship after she broke his heart and they both married someone else. She could have picked any city for her internship, why the little hick town she grew up in working with her former love. What about her husband, Ryan? Didn't care about him until it was mentioned that Striker Rheas and Lexi know him from the Lynx Series. Hmm, need another Kate Hamilton book, but really need another set of series involving The Strike Force.
I started this book on May 25 and finished it this morning. It's one of those can't-put-it-down books. The author's understanding of CSI is excellent, and you'll never guess who .... Nope, I'm not going to spoil it for you. Read this, and read the others of this author, who is sure to become widely known very quickly.
I read this novella over the last few weeks and while I normally power through books like this I took my time. I think this is a great story and the ending is not something easily guessed. I definitely recommend it.
Scarborough Katherine Sophie “Kate” Hamilton (“Katydid” niece, science teacher), looked down at her Uncle Owen Jefferson Jenkins IV (Vietnam vet) solemn face in the casket. Aunt Emma Sue Jenkins looked on. Maggie May’s was doing the after-funeral catering. Detective Tim Gibbons & Dr. Omid Javarti (Professor, PhD) stopped by to pay their condolences. Crime scene. 2 teens lay dead on the floor. The EMT’s had determined Rigor mortis had already set in.
Scarborough Knoll. Kate CSI internship) & Detective Gibbons were checking everything out. When Rebecca Brody (elderly woman) got home from the store she called 911. Wayne Brody (bronchial asthma, environmental engineer) did not make it though. Senator Tredegar Orly was strongly in favor of the uranium mining. Neil Oliver (Uncle Owen’s lawyer) read the last will/testament. Senator Orly passed away also. Does Custis Scarborough (Scarborough Mining CEO, College of William & Mary; JD), know anything?
Will the murder mysteries get solved & someone brought to justice?
How could any human being possibly take 20 mg. or 80 mg. of OxyContin, Oxycodone?
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written cozy mystery book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great who-dun-it murder mystery movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. It was just OK for me so I will rate it at 4/5 stars.

>Book Review – Mine >This book is the first book in the Kate Hamilton Mystery series and ends with the mystery solved. Kate’s husband comes back from Iraq with severe PTSD. She needs to move away while he gets treatment, for her own safety. Kate is a science teacher and decides to do a CSI internship in her hometown for the summer. She is to shadow the local police officer, Tim, who is also her ex. >The story’s mystery involves illegal drugs and greed involving mining operations. I felt the bad guy was fairly obvious, but watching Kate put all the clues together was fun. The last scene, involving the big reveal, was a little confusing as to how Kate and Tim knew who was behind the murders. The reader is not privy to any conversations regarding their suspicions ahead of time. >There is some sexual tension between Kate and Tim, enough to where Tim’s wife is jealous of Kate. I dislike cheating books. This book didn’t go there physically, but Tim is still very much in love with Kate. Kate insists she is in love with her husband, but there isn’t enough backstory showing that their relationship is tight. >I am a reviewer for Romance Author’s that Rock. This book is appropriate for a young adult (18+) audience. I am giving this book 4 stars. Unless Tim and Kate are going to pair up, their backstories need to be told to solidify their personal relationships.
This is the third book I've read by author, Fiona Quinn. I will definitely be reading more of her books.
This story begins with Kate Hamilton returning to her home town in rural Virginia to complete a CSI internship under the guidance of her childhood friend. Unbeknown to anyone but her Aunt Emma, Kate's husband has asked her to leave their home for her own safety. As Kate and Tim (her childhood friend and Detective on the local police force) begin investigating the deaths of two local teenage boys, suspicious begin to arise of the true nature of her visit. Meanwhile, her captious Uncle Owen takes ill and unfortunately dies.
The story, although short, is filled with multifaceted problems and situations. Ms. Quinn's story telling offers the reader complexity in the development of her characters, not to mention, the story line is enjoyable, action packed and fast paced. I highly recommend this book to those who read mysteries and enjoy adventure.
I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Mine: The Kate Hamilton Mysteries : Iniquus Security Action Adventure Book 1 is by Fionna Quinn. This is the first book in the set of three novellas is part of the books based on Iniquus that I am reading. These novellas deal with Randy and Kate Hamilton. Randy had acquired a brain injury while on a mission in Afghanistan with his SEAL team. This injury is causing him great pain and sometimes he gets so angry that he could hurt Kate. This was the type of injury he was afraid of getting. In order to protect Kate, he has asked her to leave him or he would leave. He never asked her nor talked it over with her. His former team members are there to look out for him and he has his service dog. Simply to quiet him down, Kate decided to spend the summer doing a CSI internship in her old hometown and visiting her aunt and uncle at the same time. She is hoping to be able to change Randy’s mind. While at home, she is involved in several murder cases.
Kate is a teacher married to a vet suffering from PTSD. Needing a break from her marriage, she returns to her small Virginia hometown for a change of scenery and to complete a forensics internship with the local police. But people are dropping like flies sprayed with Raid. With the help of her hunky ex-boyfriend/detective, she dives in.
this is a novella and as such is short and relatively to the point. Kate is likeable enough but the small town hostilities were overdone. Didn't care much for the mystery. Identified the villain early on but found the motivation and the unfolding unbelievable and unsatisfactory. It feels like a rush job and is better at setting the potential romance than developing suspense.
Love this book. Kate Hamilton is curious with a sixth sense. I can't wait for ours to be released. I did not read the books in order the first time but, I went back and read them in order. I love the characters and Inquuis (sp) is the most wonderful group and I could not put these books down. I love how they all become a family and how they find love and happiness in their mission.. I like Kate, Striker, Kane, Lynx, Deep, Gator and the FBI, Finley and Prescott. You have become one on my favorite authors. I did not give a five because it is annoying to see missed spelled and miss placed words. They just jump out at me. However I am ready for more books on this group. Best reads in a long time. I would love to be a beta reader for you.
Science teacher Kate Hamilton’s visit home to Scarborough serves multiple purposes, sure her uncle just died and she’s separated from her husband while he suffers from violent PTSD episodes but Kate’s also working a CSI internship toward her CSI degree, side by side with the local sheriff, Tim, who just happens to be her ex.
Not only are town gossips tongues wagging, given the time Kate and Tim spend together, Tim’s wife is jealous and insecure about Kate and Kate’s martial situation but most disconcerting is the number of mysterious deaths that have happened since Kate’s been in town. Things get stickier as Kate finds a link between the deaths and determines she could be next in line. Rating: 4stars
Kate Hamilton returns to her small home town for the summer. She's taken a summer CSI internship with the local PD. Her new partner is Detective Tim Gibbons, her ex high school boyfriend. But both Kate and Tim are married to others now. So, its all about business between them. And considering the spate of murders happening in their town, there's plenty to keep them busy. Kate's inquisitive mind and Tim's steadfast approach to investigation move them toward answers they might not find otherwise. Well written and interesting the characters in this novella bring you along on their journey in clever ways. The ending is a solid conclusion while leaving the door open for the next book in the series.
Fantastic little mystery that introduces Kate as an everyday clever puzzler involved with methodology that leans towards CSI and detective tactics. We also learn of her personal story involving her husband which is involved in the iniquus series and comes in as a character in his own novel later. I didn't know if I needed to listen to Kate as I am hooked on the Lynx series, but I looked at Fiona's chronological order and decided to listen in order. I'm glad I have as Kate, although gives light respite to Ms Quinns intricate writing, it shows how the characters come to know eachother as the stories weave through the iniquus world. A bit of intrigue, detective work, suspense just keeps this story rolling along nicely. Narration, although solo, is awesome. I love her tones and accents
Mine is an engaging start to the Kate Hamilton Mysteries series, weaving together suspense, emotion, and intricate relationships in a way that keeps you hooked from beginning to end. The mystery itself is compelling, but what really stands out are the complex layers of personal connections—family ties, friendships, and trust—that intertwine with the investigation.
Fiona Quinn does an excellent job balancing the emotional depth of her characters with the tension of the unfolding mystery. Each revelation feels earned, and the relationships add richness and realism to the story.
Overall, Mine is a strong and promising first book in the series—thoughtful, layered, and satisfying, with just the right blend of heart and intrigue.
The author doesn’t disappoint when it comes to writing an explosive, page-turning story that sets the foundation for some wacky and obnoxious characters, divulging a few secrets and lies, sudden twists and turns, scandal, betrayal, political intrigue, drug abuse and the misuse of wealth, power, and privilege. Kate Hamilton is a sharp criminal scene investigator, and her relationship with Detective Tim Gibbons, whom she dated back in high school, becomes the focus of gossip, resentment, envy, and threats, making the narrative more riveting, sending you on roller coaster journey, and keeping you speculating to the very end.
This town and its citizens have a lot of angst, anger and baggage...and it is fascinating. There is a brief connection to the other books in the Iniquus series through a comment and assistance from Striker and Lynx, but the rest of the story focuses on small town citizens and a local detective who are facing a lot of murders and a potential land developer issue.
It is a fast read and entertaining. I am not sure how or what type of romance is involved or how the series for Kate plays out as it starts off as a summer internship, but it caught my attention and I want to read more!
This book is about a high school science teacher who has returned to her small town because of the death of her uncle and to do a CSI-type internship for her studies. SO many people then begin to die in just days. Are these intentional murders? Accidental deaths? How does a high school science teacher figure out all the clues?! This is a great beginning to mysteries solved by Kate Hamilton. It was not too long to read, and kept my attention the whole time and CERTAINLY tricked me about "Who-dun-it!" WELL worth buying!
A small town with a sinister twist and a soap opera’s worth of personal drama. I don’t even really know what to say about the story. I adored it, but that feels like I’m damning it with faint praise. Kate is such an amazing character. She’s brilliant while still being down-to-earth. She represents every one of us who’ve sat at home watching or reading crime dramas wondering what it would be like to be in the thick of it. Turns out it’s both not nearly as exciting as we’d like to think and so much more terrifying than you’d expect. I can’t wait to read more about Kate.
I loved this book. Coming from a small town I can say T-shirt author got everything right about the gossip, rumors and nosiness. Kate returns to her hometown in time for her uncle’s funeral and her internship as a CSI with the local police. The detective she works with happens to work with is her high school sweetheart, Tim. Her husband in Boston asked her to leave while he tries to get help with his PTSD. As soon as Kate shows up, people start dying and she and Tim try to find who is responsible.
