He was bred to destroy her kind. She’s destined to destroy the world. But the Fates have a sense of humor…
A KINGDOM ON THE EDGE. A POWER SHE CAN’T CONTROL. AN ENEMY SHE CAN’T IGNORE.
The fragile peace between the triplet Kingdoms of Aetherium is fracturing. The anti-magic Border around Aeos is failing—and something dark is rising.
Hazel Callahan only wanted a quiet life alongside her father at their inn. But when forbidden magic bursts from her veins, she becomes a fugitive in a realm that hunts her kind. Her only hope for survival—and the truth about her mother’s past—lies with the one man sworn to destroy her.
Slaide Elias, the infamous shadow-wielding witch hunter, has spent his life serving the crown he despises. Hazel should be his enemy. Instead, she becomes his only chance at freedom—and the first to challenge the darkness within him.
Condemned to the deadly Tournament of Champions, Hazel and Slaide are forced into an uneasy alliance that ignites something far more perilous than magic. But as secrets unravel and destiny closes in, Hazel will have to decide if trusting her enemy will save her… or doom them both.
THE FATED AND THE FALLEN is the first installment in the Fates of Aetherium, an epic romantasy series featuring a high-stakes, slow burn, character-driven plot perfect for fans of Serpent & Dove, Spark of the Everflame, Serpent and the Wings of Night, and Throne of Glass.
This book has a lot of potential and features many elements that make for an engaging romantasy; most notably a dark, shadow-winged witch-hunter MMC paired with a fierce witch who wields powerful light magic. The concept itself is intriguing and clearly shows promise.
That said, I found the plot to be somewhat underdeveloped, and I struggled at times to remain fully immersed. Some of the characters’ emotional responses to major, life-changing events felt inconsistent, which occasionally left me feeling confused about the intended impact of certain moments.
The early banter between the main characters was enjoyable and engaging; however, as the story progressed, I didn’t feel the emotional connection I had hoped for. The writing style also didn’t fully resonate with me on a personal level, though this ultimately comes down to individual taste, and I can see it appealing to other readers.
While this book didn’t quite work for me, fans of enemies-to-lovers and slow-burn romantasy may still find a lot to enjoy. The tension between a witch hunter and a powerful witch is a central focus and will likely appeal to readers who love this trope.
I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I adored this. My witch x witch hunter itch has finally been scratched again after my longing for a book that would stand up with Rebel Witch by Kristen Ciccarelli! This was so addictive, I raced through and lost 2 nights sleep, but it was worth every yawn! A new author for me to be obsessed with, and I am here for it all!
Thanks to IRIS Influencer Society for providing the eARC. This is my honest opinion.
A World Where Fate Rules
'The Fated and the Fallen' pulls you into its world of fate from the very first page and refuses to let go. M.E. Allquist weaves a realm full of magic, intrigue, and hidden desires, where every character struggles with choices far greater than themselves. It’s a story where the threat is not only external or supernatural, but also deeply internal: fears, secrets, and guilt hang over the characters like shadows, often proving more dangerous than any weapon.
What makes this book so compelling is the balance between action and psychological depth. The battles and magical confrontations are thrilling, but it is the emotions and motivations of the characters that linger long after the pages are turned. Each carries their own burdens, and Allquist shows how even the smallest choices can trigger a chain of consequences that leaves no one untouched. The inner conflicts are portrayed with such nuance that you almost feel the characters’ doubts and fears yourself.
The world-building is rich and meticulously detailed. The magic feels mysterious, intricate, and yet tangible, and the setting carries a constant sense of urgency and threat that keeps you on edge. At times, the pacing slows with slightly predictable twists, but the depth of the relationships and the subtle psychological layers more than make up for it.
'The Fated and the Fallen' is an immersive fantasy that leaves you hungry for more. It invites reflection on guilt, responsibility, and the fine line between good and evil. And although the ending provides closure, the world continues to live in your mind long after the book is closed, leaving you longing to know what might happen next.

"You’ve got a lot to learn if you think your only enemies are the ones hiding in the shadows. Sometimes the ones who don’t hide are the most dangerous of them all.”
✨ Enemies to almost lovers ✨ Forbidden magic ✨ Forced proximity ✨ Hidden identity ✨ Touch her and die
This is an accessible, easy-to-get-into romantasy that pulls you quickly into a dangerous world of forbidden magic, fractured kingdoms, and fate closing in from all sides. Hazel’s life shifts fast from quiet and contained to hunted, imprisoned, and forced into circumstances far bigger than she ever prepared for.
“The more time she spent in the castle, the less likely she was getting out alive.”
Slaide is deliberately difficult at first. Arrogant, guarded, and sharp-edged, he fits the role he’s been cast in far too well. But as the story unfolds, cracks begin to show, and his actions slowly start to matter more than his words.
“I see there is more to you than meets the eye. More than the rumors and the assumptions and the horrible things they’ve made you do.”
Their dynamic leans heavily on tension and restraint. Training scenes, forced proximity, and sharp banter build something compelling, but the story never fully tips into romance. Instead, it leaves everything suspended on the edge, charged with what could happen next.
“I’ve thought about you under a number of things. But I’ll admit, my thumb wasn’t on that list.”
The book takes its time laying foundations, then ramps up quickly toward the end. Revelations about Hazel’s identity and future reframe much of what came before and make it clear this is only the beginning of a much larger arc.
“You’ve brought light into a dark place. Don’t let them put it out.”
A strong series opener with simmering tension, hidden power, and a heroine only just beginning to understand what she is capable of becoming.
✨ Chaos, vibes, and opinions are all my own ✨ please give credit if you share.

The Fated and the Fallen by M. E. Allquist is an absolutely gripping start to the Aetherium series that calmly lures you in and then emotionally drop-kicks you at the end. Dark fantasy? Check. Emotional damage? Double check.
We follow Hazel Callahan, a FMC wrestling with her identity while unraveling the dangerous, secret-laced legacy of her mother. Hazel feels real flawed, guarded, and struggling with trust and self-worth in a way that hits a little too close to home. Her relationships (especially with Slaide and Phaedra 👀) bring delicious tension, layered emotions, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting.
The prologue hooks hard, setting the tone with immediate stakes and a sense of dread that never fully lets go. The world-building is rich and immersive runes, magic, and the eerie hedge maze create a shadow-soaked setting that feels alive and watching you back.
That said, the pacing does slow in spots, particularly when heavier backstory comes into play. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it does require a bit of patience. Also, this book leans unapologetically into dark themes, so definitely check the content warnings before diving in.
And then there’s the ending. The AUDACITY.
That cliffhanger really said, “Oh, you thought you were safe? Cute.” I closed the book and stared into the void because HOW do authors sleep after doing this to readers?!
Overall, Allquist delivers a powerful, emotional, and high-stakes fantasy that blends self-discovery with darkness both internal and external. If you love dark fantasy, morally gray tension, and books that leave you emotionally wrecked and begging for the sequel… congrats. This one’s for you.

📗 The Fated and the Fallen by M.E. Allquist 📖 The Fates of Aetherium, Book 1 (~402 pages) Publisher: Indie
I devoured 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯 in less than 36 hours! This debut fantasy by M. E. Allquist is a truly captivating escape perfect for anyone who loves fractured kingdoms, forbidden magic, slow burn romance, and a reluctant heroine you cannot help rooting for.
𝐻𝑎𝑧𝑒𝑙’𝑠 life is turned upside down when she is forced into captivity under a ruthless, magic fearing king. Enter 𝑆𝑙𝑎𝑖𝑑𝑒, the king’s witch hunter, whose own secrets unravel slowly and kept me glued to the page. The story masterfully reveals twists and hidden truths along the way, and I did not see that cliffhanger coming!
The romance is a classic slow burn with lots of “will they or won’t they” tension, but with so much happening in the plot there is no time for fiery distractions. I loved how Allquist balances worldbuilding, training and trials, betrayal, and personal stakes.
This is a fantasy that is easy to dive into but hard to put down, and I am already eagerly anticipating book 2. M. E. Allquist is definitely an author to watch! Rating: 4.5/5
The Fated and the Fallen was such a fun ride! A wounded, sarcastic shadow-wielding witch hunter paired with a small town witch who isn't afraid to stand up for herself? I was in immediately. I flew through this in under a day because the pacing and tension kept dragging me forward. The world already feels big, with clear political stakes and a magic system that’s still unfolding, and I’m really curious to see how much deeper it goes as the series continues.
The romance is really wonderful here. The yearning is incredible. The almost-lovers energy, the forced proximity, the training scenes, the sharp banter... it all works to build that slow, painful tension. That ALMOST scene genuinely made me mad (in a good way). I was also quite emotionally invested in both of the leads, even when I wanted to shake Slaide out of frustration. He’s prickly, guarded, and deeply annoying at times, and I was right there with Hazel in being fed up with him. His ability to turn things into a joke and his tendency to be moody make him harder to root for immediately, but the cracks in his armor do start to show in ways that feel so earned.
There is definitely some suspension of disbelief here. The fact that Hazel is allowed any freedom at all as a witch, especially under the watch of a hunter who isn’t fully trusted, made me raise an eyebrow. But honestly? I didn’t mind much, which says a lot about how much the story had me hooked otherwise. I also expected this to be darker than it was, based on the setup, but the tone stayed lighter than I personally anticipated, and that also didn’t bother me. There was a tiny bit of disappointment in the emotional development of the romance. The attraction and tension are strong, but the emotional bond between them doesn’t always feel like it deepens enough. It’s compelling, but still mostly rooted in proximity and shared danger rather than genuine understanding... at least for now. I also did not really care about her friend, so I did not care about his twist. The magic system is also softer than I personally prefer, but it’s interesting enough that I’m invested in learning more.
Overall, this feels like a strong foundation. It sets up a bigger story, higher stakes, and a romance that’s clearly meant to burn slowly and painfully over time. The pacing, the yearning, and the characters kept me engaged from start to finish, even when I had questions or wanted things to be pushed a little further. I’m absolutely continuing this series, because if this is just the beginning, I want to see how messy, magical, and emotionally devastating it gets from here. Fingers crossed.
Thanks so much to the author and IRIS Influencer Society for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
I devoured every second of The Fated and the Fallen by M.E. Allquist. Thanks for having me ARC read as I heavily enjoyed this one! A 5-star read, without a doubt. Hazel and Slaide's story had me so invested that I didn't pause to take notes while I read, which hardly happens.
There were SO MANY plot twists! And I, the oblivious reader that I am, did not predict any of them. The writing was beautiful, and the slow burn was so good! With the witch x witch hunter dynamic, it all worked really well, and I'm rooting for Hazel and Slaide. Can we talk about that cliffhanger??? Yall I cannot wait for the next book in this series to find out what will happen next!
Who loves reading an enemies to lovers trope??? Because I know I do!!! Hazel the witch and Slaide the witch hunter, their banter is to die for. I was so invested in their story and fhem growing together and as character.
If you love a good slow burn, hidden identity, moral grey mmc, and forbidden magic this book is for you!
🧙🏼♀️witch x witch hunter 🧙🏼”who did this to you” 🧙🏼♀️dark fantasy romance 🧙🏼slow burn 🧙🏼♀️third person
If you’re in the mood for a fate-tangled fantasy romance with danger in the air and that “we’re doomed…but also obsessed” energy, this one will totally scratch the itch. The world has a moody, magic-laced vibe that pulled me in fast, and I really liked how the story leaned into destiny vs. choice—like the characters are constantly fighting what’s “written” for them.
The emotional tension is definitely the strongest part for me. There were scenes that had me leaning in because the connection (and the consequences) felt real, and the atmosphere stayed deliciously intense.
That said, this was a 3.5 because the pacing felt a little uneven—some parts flew by, while others slowed down when I wanted more forward motion. I also found myself wishing for a bit more clarity in a few moments (especially when the lore and stakes started stacking), but once I got my footing, it was a fun ride.
Overall: solid romantasy vibes, high on mood + tension, with enough intrigue to keep me turning pages—just not quite a full knockout for me.
I really liked the concept for this book. It fell a little short for me though. I found it very hard to get into. I had to force myself to read it. Not that it wasn't well written, but I guess it just didn't hit from me. Would I read the next book in the series, probably not. I gave it four stars because I don't think there was anything wrong with the book, it just wasn't for me.
In a world where magic is forbidden, Hazel accidentally discovers she has a suppressed magical ability and is arrested for treason and conspiracy against the crown. She is thrown, unwillingly, into a deadly tournament with none other than the powerful and feared witch hunter, Slaide, as her mentor. Hazel must learn accept her identity and control her newly discovered power if she hopes to survive. With blood and betrayal lurking around every corner, will Hazel survive long enough to earn her freedom?
Tropes: -witch x witch hunter -he trains her -animal companion -reluctant allies -forbidden magic -games and trials -enemies-to-almost-lovers
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed the overall plot of The Fated and the Fallen and think the series has potential, but I wanted a little more emotion and yearning from the characters. I like my fantasy books to be pretty romance heavy, but with a plot to back it up!! Personal preference — I was hoping for a bit more romance and *tension* between Hazel and Slaide. I also am partial to 1st person POVs, so this book being in 3rd person likely affected my overall view of it!
The beginning was a little hard for me to get into, I wasn’t hooked right into the story but the end left on a cliffhanger that does make me want to know what happens in book 2. We picked up speed toward the second half of the book for sure. This book is definitely setting the stage for the rest of the series — there is a lot of potential for the next installment to be even better, and I’m routing for that to happen!!
I devoured The Fated and the Fallen in less than 48 hours and when I say devoured, I mean I didn’t once check how many pages I had left. I was completely hypnotized by the author’s writing and the sheer magic of this story. Page after page, chapter after chapter, I was gone. Just… WOW🤯
I honestly don’t even have the words to explain how much this book surprised me. When I first read the blurb, I’ll admit it I thought: “Hmm… okay, another story with a broken heroine, a morally dark hero, enemies to lovers, blah blah blah.” Let me tell you right now: I was so wrong. The slap this book delivered? Monumental🥴 What did I just read??? I’m stunned. Blown away. Still processing.
What I got instead was a powerful, immersive, emotionally charged dark romantasy with incredible world-building, razor-sharp tension, and characters that feel painfully real. The pacing is flawless !
Hazel lives a quiet, peaceful life with her father in a remote village, helping run their inn. Never in a million years did she imagine her life would spiral into something so dark and brutal. Magic was banished from the kingdom. Witches are hunted, executed, erased. The king raised a magical barrier to keep all magical creatures out but that barrier is weakening. Something dark is pushing against it. Monsters roam the land.
And Hazel encounters one.
She’s ready to die… and then BOOM ! she fends off the creature with magic. Her magic.
Saved by a mysterious, terrifying man (or creature?), Hazel tries to return to her quiet life. But fate isn’t done with her. Soldiers arrive. She’s arrested. Her crime? Being a witch.
And then enters Slaide Elias 😮💨🔥🖤— yes, that Slaide (and yes, I screamed at the Slade Ravinger nod). The king’s infamous witch hunter. The monster of legends. He offers her a deal: she will fight as his champion in the royal tournament. If she wins, she lives and he gains his freedom.
Simple. Except nothing about this story is.
Because Slaide is not the monster he pretends to be. Dark secrets shroud him. Pain, guilt, and shadows cling to every part of him. And Hazel? She is not a damsel in distress. She challenges him at every turn, refuses to bend, refuses to break. And what awaits them is far greater than they ever imagined. It is no longer just about Hazel’s survival, but the fate of an entire kingdom.
Their interactions are raw, explosive, and charged with tension. This is enemies-to-allies-to-something far more dangerous. The slow burn is immaculate… restrained, painful, devastating. One kiss. ONE. And so many unsaid words left hanging in the air.
THIS IS A TRUE SLOOOOOW BURN🔥 I am so tired of reading the same boring stuff… like 40% in and the FMC and MMC are already giving in😒🙄 THIS BOOK IS SO REFRESHING ! Finally an author who prioritises the plot and the world building before the sexual aspect ! It was so prefect.
“It’s the way you glare at me, as though you’d burn me to ash with a single look if you could.” He brought his face closer to hers, his dark eyes searching as they flitted back and forth. “You make me want to test you,” he continued as mischief danced across his face, “physically and mentally. I want to explore what makes you tick and learn what sounds you make when you’re unable to utter a single coherent word.”
“Tell me, Hazel. How does it feel to bring a witch hunter to his knees?”
The magic system, the political tension, and the looming sense of danger create an atmosphere that keeps tightening until you’re holding your breath.
And that ending…😱😭😭😭 All I’ll say is this: I closed the book in silence, stared at the wall, and immediately needed the sequel.

Ok so I first want to say that I did enjoy the story aspect and am giving this book a 3.5. I’m struggling with the rating to be honest
Will I read the next book??? Absolutely! I do want answers to the ending. What an ending!!!! So some things I like about this story is our MMC. He is morally gray at best at times. But overall I really liked him. Our MFC, while not bad, sometimes I just wanted to reach in the book and shake her and tell her to not be stupid. This starts off where there are dreams with our MFC and you learn more about that through the book btw. She has powers but it’s been hidden by her father….. well as the story progresses, she gets taken to the king and placed in the tournament. As she battles her way through the tournament, things shift between our main characters. The last 20% had me hooked and that ending. What an ending. I did feel our MFC at the end could have put up more of a fight but didn’t.
So if this books gets revamped or things are changed from the ARC to the printed version, I will be happy to re-read and update my review.
Some of the things I struggled with is repetitive areas. There are things that are said and then in the next paragraph or a couple paragraphs, it’s rephrased. The opening epilogue was confusing where it fit in to be honest. Some areas that could have been expanded were short where other dialog was extended. Example was a scene with Slaide where it’s his POV and there is a lot of information that could have been condensed but then minimal from our MFC. One example I can think about is when magic is used and things go black, there isn't much discussed about what happens once the world goes back to the point of being held captive. With the way it was written, it made it feel like it was weeks but then it was only a day or so. Just making sure that timelines are consistent or that it is conveyed in the storyline being constant and not giving room for interpretation when it comes to information that is needed. Also it never explained the changes in people. Hopefully that will get answered in book 2. There are plenty of things that didn’t get answered btw. Also I would have rather preferred POV for chapters vs some things are written as POV but then 3rd person. Now I didn’t count that against the books rating, I just want to point that out as some people don’t like that in book styles either.
Overall, I think the story is great but found myself struggling until about 70% of the book. It wasn’t bad where I was going to DNF but I didn’t find myself fully invested where I had to keep reading until toward the ending. Normally a book of this size should take me 2-3 days and it took me 5 to finish.
I think the author has a great story and feel with some adjustments it can be amazing! For me, it just fell a little shot but still happy I was able to read it. And again, I will be looking for book 2 as I want answers.
The Fated and the Fallen by M.E. Allquist was everything I want in a dark fantasy romance and more.
From the very beginning, I was pulled into this atmospheric, dangerous world where witches are hunted and nothing feels safe — especially your heart. The story centers on a witch and a witch hunter, and the tension between them was so good. It had that perfect slow-burn energy where every interaction felt charged with mistrust, curiosity, and forbidden attraction.
I also want to thank the author for trusting me with her e-ARC for this book. I’m so grateful to have been able to read and support this story early.
One of the things I really loved was the third-person POV, which gave the story so much depth. It allowed me to understand both characters, their fears, and their motivations, and made the world-building feel richer and more immersive.
The witch x witch hunter dynamic was absolutely my favorite part. Their relationship is layered with conflict, longing, and that constant feeling of “we shouldn’t be doing this,” which made the romance feel earned instead of rushed. The slow burn was done so well — full of emotional tension and quiet moments that stayed with me long after I put the book down.
If you’re a fan of dark fantasy romance with: • Witch x witch hunter • Slow burn • Forbidden romance • Atmospheric world-building • Enemies-to-lovers vibes
then this book is definitely for you.
I’d especially recommend this to readers who loved the Crimson Moth series and are looking for something with that same witch-and-hunter energy mixed with romance, danger, and destiny.
This was a beautiful, dark, and emotional read, and I’m so excited to see where this story goes next. I’ll absolutely be continuing the series.
Wow. I was not prepared for the wreckage left by this book! Such a good read!
The Fated and the Fallen is the first book in the author’s Fate of Aetherium series, taking us to a land where witches possess magic, but it is outlawed inside the King’s Borders. The King, however, keeps magical creatures against their will to do his bidding, and his subjects live in fear and suspicion of one another.
We meet Slaide Elias, a brooding, dark witch hunter bred for evil and bloodlust. To the world, he is a strong and ruthless killer, but there is more behind his shadows and rough exterior.
We also meet Hazel Callahan, a smart, caring daughter living a simple life running an inn with her father. She is unaware of the true powers that lie within her until Fate puts her in Slaide’s path, and nothing is as it seemed.
Slaide is the darkness, and Hazel brings the light, and these two enemies come together as unlikely allies, unsure of each other’s motives but increasingly drawn to each other. What Hazel discovers along the way led to some definite jaw-dropping moments for me.
I went in knowing it was a witch versus witch hunter dark fantasy, and the author delivers on that big time, but there are also complex themes within this book that are a perfect example of how the fantasy genre can hold up a mirror to our worldview and promote deep thinking. I was not expecting how fast I would be drawn into this epic story, how much I enjoyed every chapter, and how I am already so desperate for the next book.
Thank you IRIS Influencer Society and author M.E. Allquist for sending me a free copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. 4.5 stars.
After that cliffhanger ending with those final two reveals, that next book better be coming ASAP, because I need to know how our FMC handles this news and if the final reveal how quickly she will find out!!
This book follows a FMC Hazel, who’s just trying to survive in her small town, running an inn with her father and watching over her “aunt” who helped raise her. When suddenly she’s put in a situation that to help save her aunt, powers come out of her, powers that’s she didn’t know she had and powers that are illegal in her kingdom and the witch hunter who found her is now her only hope for salvation. She must work with this man who’s been cruel to earn her freedom in trials being put on by the king and survive both mental and physical challenges. As the truth unfolds around her and she learns more about her hidden identity, it turns out not everything is as it seems.
From the very first few chapters, this story had me wrapped up in its immersive world and the chaotic events happening within it. I really felt for the FMC who both loved her family but also felt betrayed by what they were hiding from her. There was also plenty of tension between Hazel and the witch hunter she’s sworn to hate who put her in this position, with banter and yearning coming from both of them, I cannot wait to see how this relationship turns out in the next book. With plenty of secrets coming unraveled, battle scenes and of course magic, this book had me flipping to the next page as fast as I could and I cannot wait for the next one! Overall my rating 4.8/5!
Thanks to the author for the gifted ARC, all opinions given are my own!
“You, my dear Hazel, are going to break the chains holding witches back. You will shatter the world as we know it, and you will reforge it into something better.
This book is so easy to get into. The action takes off on the first page, pulling you into the story immediately. So many of my favorite tropes exist within the pages of this story: forbidden magic, unveiled prophecies, fate you can’t outrun, witty banter, a damaged shadow daddy MMC, and a badass FMC. 👏
Hazel is so great! She’s witty and confident, loyal and loving, and has these unspoken responses to conversations that are slightly condescending, self-deprecating and blunt. She has a busy mind, which I can certainly relate to.
Slaide ❤️ this is the type of MMC I absolutely devour. He’s suave and self-assured, a shadow daddy with a bad boy reputation and a secretive past. There’s depth to him, and I have a feeling this book has barely breached what makes Slaide who he is. I just love a damaged man wrapped in mystery.
The interactions between Hazel and Slaide are perfection. There’s tension, confusion, yearning, and witty banter that had me laughing out loud. They are such a fun pair.
This story is fast paced; there are a ton of plot twists and breadcrumbs dropped that keep you wanting more. Whispers of fate and unveiled prophecies, hidden family secrets reveled at the very last moment, and so many “what if?” moments that are left unanswered. The last sentence of this book… 😮💨
I definitely cannot wait to continue reading this series and see what comes next! Thank you for sharing an ARC with me M.E. Allquist & Iris Influencer Society! ❤️
The Fated and the Fallen by M.E. Allquist 5 out of 5 stars ARC
Thank you, IRIS Influencer Society and M.E., for this early copy. All parts of this review are of my own honest opinion 💚
I NEED more of this series! 😍 I loved every little bit of this, like literally, there is not a single thing about this book that I did not like. It is a book for the ages with amazing pacing, one-of-a-kind world-building, and a storyline that leaves you demanding more. If you're like me, you won't be able to stop yourself from falling in love with the world and its characters.
Don't expect these characters to be stereotypical either. That's why you'll love them. Hazel is our FMC, and she is not broken. Through everything that happens, she stands tall, even after a moment that would crush everyone else beyond repair. Then we have our MMC, Slaide; he may seem like the most villainous person to ever exist, but as you read on, you'll realize just how wrong that is, and you'll see who the true villains are. Plus, Slaide could wrap his wings around me any day 😉, so maybe I'm a little biased 😂

The Fated and the Fallen (The Fates of Aetherium Book 1) M. E. Allquist @author_meallquist Publication Date: February 6, 2026
The intrigue was really high during my reading of this. There are so many secrets and revelations, villainous deeds and heartbreaks involved. TFatF is a high stakes plot heavy book that kept me wondering what's next and not able to put it down, and I enjoyed the push-pull relationship between Slaide and Hazel. Their tension and close call moments will give you your own yearning for them to bring their walls down toward each other. I love some good witch x witch hunter chaos in my reads. The character arcs were great to read about, and I felt Hazel's frustrations as a reluctant heroine as she struggled to come into her own and deal with family secrets that had been kept from her for so long. That cliffhanger!!!

Thank for M.E. Allquist for this ARC edition of 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣. Truly a wonderful read. It is action packed and fast-paced. It gives Anastasia meets Hunger Games with a magical twist on it. Once I started reading, I immediately understood the assignment, and it doesn't disappoint. Without a doubt, Merrill is amazing. You'll see. It has playful nods to familiar movies and books that will make you smile, make you chuckle, but don't let that fool you in this dark fantasy

I just finished The Fated and the Fallen by M.E. Allquist, and I’m still reeling from those final pages. There is something so satisfying about a "Witch x Witch Hunter" dynamic, but this one adds a dark, celestial layer: Slaide isn't just a hunter; he’s a Fallen Angel with a history of secrets that we are only just beginning to peel back.
Opposite him is Hazel, who is easily one of the most refreshing FMCs I’ve read lately. She is stubborn and sassy, but her real strength is her resilience. It was so nice to see a lead who wasn't automatically good at everything. She genuinely struggles with her "dance" lessons and can’t wield a blade to save her life, but she refuses to let that stop her.
A few things that made this a standout read: The Chemistry: The spark between Hazel and Slaide is electric. Their "enemies-to-almost-lovers" tension kept me hooked, especially since Slaide is clearly holding back so much. The Scene-Stealers: That orange cat and Phillip the horse are the absolute best side characters. They bring such a great personality to the story. The Ending: The final pages are full of revelations. It’s a subtle cliffhanger, but it’s done in a way that leaves you deeply curious about what’s coming next rather than just frustrated.
We’ve only just scratched the surface of the secrets in this world, and I’m already impatient for more.
Just to preface before diving into my review, I was very grateful to have received this book as an ARC from the IRIS influencer society and am proud to support independently published authors within this industry.
Now for my review, I ended up rating this book 3.5 stars, which is not bad by any means as I actually had a really fun time reading this book. The plot was so fascinating and kept me gripped throughout the entirety of this book, and I absolutely loved Slaide’s character. I mean you can't go wrong with a morally grey angsty man with the "who did this to you?" trope! The slowburn was also immaculate and I can't wait to explore their dynamic more within the next book/s.
There were unfortunately a few things that I struggled with, such as Hazel being a damsel in distress consistently throughout this book. This is just a personal preference of mine, but I would've enjoyed some moments where she fought her own battles and came out on top, hopefully this can happen in future books. Additionally, there were some moments that felt rushed and honestly I would've loved if this book was longer so we could spend more time in each of the important plot moments, as well as the smaller things such as the training as I really enjoyed these small details.
I will definitely be continuing this series as it was fun and easy to read, and would definitely recommend if you're looking for a dark fantasy romance with a slowburn and lots of action.
I write this review with all honesty that the author is my best friend and I was chosen to be one of the first readers because she knew I would be brutally honest and provide her with unbiased feedback!
I am so impressed that this is a debut novel! The storyline and plot are so entertaining and keep the reader engaged. As a reader who pictures what she reads in her mind like a movie as she reads, the author did a great job describing the scenes and allowing you to feel like you’re in the story. The development of the characters relationship and story as the novel progresses is amazing and makes it to where you need to keep reading page after page! I had originally read it last year prior to editing and rewrites and to read it again now in its finished form was incredible! If you know the author you would know you can see her amazing sarcastic and lovable personality in the FMC Hazel and the banter between her and the MMC is top notch! There were multiple light bulb and oh shit moments that kept me wanting more. It is unpredictable which is my favorite type of plot and she officially has me wanting more! Also it has an amazing map which I absolutely love in a book. Cannot wait to see how the series progresses and what is next in store for Hazel and Slaide! You will not be sorry you picked this one up!
What the hell! Yes, this is what I said at the end of The Fated and the Fallen. A true enemy to lovers romantasy. With banned magic and a number of magical beings, including witches and angels. Add in banter, hidden identity, lies, betrayals, tragedy, some spice, and even a little feminine rage, making for an entertaining and fascinating read. Moments in the book had me bawling my eyes out and my heart breaking. M.E. Allquist did a great job building the characters, depicting their raw emotions, making them feel real and relatable. The FMC, Hazels mouth, seemed to get her in trouble a lot, and yet she still ended up the damsel in distress. Many times, I thought she was going to give up, but I knew her story couldn't end, and she always pulled herself back up, I loved that about her. The MMC Slaide was 100% morally gray and probably had every red flag out there. Yet I couldn't help but want the villain to get the girl! Hazel and Slaides' first encounter had me smirking and laughing. That moment truly caputed the vibe of their future relationship. The story and plot build nicely. The pace of this book started slow for me, but Im soooo glad I stuck with it because the pace definitely picked up.Their were definitely plot twists I didn't see coming. All in all, this was a great read with a lot of my favorite tropes.
This is such an amazing and creative read! The world building is immersive and detailed. The magic system is creative, and the author does a great job making it sound realistic with real consequences. Hazel, the FMC, is a nobody with no power, and she doesn’t understand everyone’s interest in her. Slaide, the MMC, is a witch hunter that serves the crown, and could be Hazel’s only salvation. The author does an amazing job with character development and creating relatability with fears, flaws, and struggles. There are so many different layers of the story that adds depth. The pacing is perfect throughout for everything that is happening and slower for sections that may need more time to develop and comprehend. There are so many secrets and twists! It was an amazing journey that kept me engaged and wanting to know more. It ends on a cliffhanger that had me yelling “nooooooo, it can’t end here!” Overall, if you love dark epic romantasy, witch x witch hunter, forbidden magic, slow burn, trials, emotional damage (in the best way), and plot twists then this is for you! I can’t wait for the next book!
Thanks to IRIS Influencer Society and the author for the gifted eARC. I am voluntarily leaving a review, and all thoughts are my own.
✨️ Witch x Witch Hunter ✨️ Forbidden Magic ✨️ Who Did This To You ✨️ Third Person Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Poor Hazel. Her life is completely turned upside down within the space of a couple of weeks. She's forced to question everything she thought she knew about the world and herself all while trying to survive in a court that has forbidden the magic that hides in her veins.
Slaide's speech reads at a mile a minute and I love it. He is so cocky and just says whatever hes thinking and expects others to keep up and get on board. He gives main character energy with best friend banter rolled into one. He's not the usual broody MMC instead is flirty and playful.
The plot twists came thick and fast. It gives Salem witch trials x The Witcher vibes.
I cant wait to see how Hazel's character develops in the next book and cant wait for the drama to be unleashed!
"Little witch, little witch, let me in."
"You make me want to test you, physically and mentally. I want to explore what makes you tick and learn what sounds you make when you're unable to utter a single coherent word."
"I wonder how long I can hover here, tempting you with what you desire, but can't have? Close enough to steal your breath, but never quite giving you what you want?"
This book delivers high fantasy with a slow burn enemies to lovers romance as a subplot, but I can already see that heating up in book 2! You get betrayals, lies, secrets, deadly trials, forbidden magic, and malevolent gods all wrapped into one story. Hazel is just a regular citizen in a poor city until one day she thinks she used magic, except magic has been outlawed for years and witches are executed. When she’s captured, she meets Slaide the witch hunter who becomes responsible for her, and that’s where things get interesting.
Both Hazel and Slaide have great character growth throughout the book, even though it takes time to develop. I loved watching them evolve as the story progressed. The deadly trials were SO good and each one felt unique and different. The various creatures and fantasy elements woven throughout were amazing, so many different aspects packed into one book and it all worked beautifully together!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and the plot kept me hooked. That cliffhanger ending though?! I need book 2 TODAY! If you love high fantasy with complex world-building and a romance that takes its time, definitely add this to your TBR.
Thank you @irisinlfuencer & @author_meallquist for gifting me this arc in return for an honest review!
✨Thank you so much to M. E. Allquist and her team for the eARC and the opportunity to read and review it!✨
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️
I ended up really enjoying this ARC. It took me a minute to get into the story. But once the trials and Slaide were introduced I was hooked. There were a few pacing issues where I feel like certain parts of the story dragged a bit. And vice versa, times where events just happened all of a sudden without enough build up. At least for me personally. I want a little more complexity to Hazel, other than peasant girl who loves her dad and discovers she has powers. I feel like we got a lot of character development and exploration of Slaide but not her. Based off the end of this book, I’m hopeful that will be a big part of the sequel. I saw one of the twists at the end coming, but happy to say the other surprised me! I won’t say what to avoid spoilers, but I’ll definitely be grabbing the second book in this series when it’s available.
