Second Chances

Rate this book
Susie Whiting's readers have said she knows how to paint pictures with words and draw on emotions each have felt in their own lives. Once again, Susie has used her gift to paint the wild and beauty of Alaska, at the same time painting a picture of unconditional love, hope and faith. The reader can feel the despair felt from someone suffering the pain of addiction, and from opportunities lost and hearts broken, only to be lifted up again to the hope only love can bring.Kyle and Brandon are two young boys caught up in the middle of a drug deal gone wrong; one that threatens not only their mother's life, but theirs also. Their salvation lies three thousand miles away in a small town in Alaska, with a grandmother they do not remember. Sophia knows how to hunt, fish and survive, but will she know how to heal the physical and emotional wounds of her grandsons? Will a second chance heal broken hearts and damaged faith?

This book is full of messages of love and hope. The novel is short and moves quickly, so it sometimes felt like there was a lot packed into it, and I didn't feel like I could connect with the characters as much. Nonetheless, there were times I felt like I could extrapolate or infer the emotions I think the author was trying to convey by imagining myself in a character's shoes. Though I have never experienced the specific issues and events of this story (the effect of drug abuse and addiction on those we love), I think there is a universal message of hope for anyone who has ever struggled with anything at some point in their life. And I think that covers everyone. There is hope, change is possible, and love is powerful.

Indie authors don't generally have the benefit of free editing, so I did notice the editing could be improved in this novel.
