Mike Eiser is shocked when his friend and mentor, Charlie Bozeman, is murdered by a sniper right in front of him. Could his boss, Sheriff Glenn Glassman, be the murderer? Or, is there another explanation?
Clabe Polk is into a second career as a writer of fiction. So far, he has written three novels, three novellas, several short stories, assorted screen plays and has a couple of novels in process. He is a life-long reader with a great variety of life experiences that has led him to write a variety of different types of fiction. Mr. Polk retired after nearly thirty-seven years in professional environmental protection, that included administrative, civil, and criminal law enforcement. Having studied Marine Zoology and natural sciences at the University of South Florida, he has spent most of his life among the woods, waters, fields and farms of Florida and Georgia.
He currently lives in Powder Springs, Georgia with his wife, two daughters and the family’s cockerpoo named ‘Annie’.
The story starts off with a bang. Literally. When Mike Eiser's partner gets shot. The suspense starts right away with Mike trying to figure out where the shot came from. Being a detective in the small town had always been a pretty quiet job. The crimes were usually minor ones and they had never had a murder. Then, in a matter of days, they have two more murders. Mike has to get to the bottom of this. Fast.
A lot happens in this short story but you can easily follow everything that's going on in this well-written book. It's fast-paced but not rushed. Someone is dealing drugs and sex to high school kids. Is there a gang doing this in the old house Mike wants to buy? I liked the way Mike figured it out and I was sure surprised with the outcome.
I was glad to get this book in exchange for an honest review. I liked the way Mike thought out what was going on so that he could catch the bad guy(s). I really like Mike Eiser and will definitely be reading more in this series.
I recommend this short story to mystery/thriller fans.
I don't read many short stories, but I found this to be a satisfying exception. Mike Eiser is a compelling character, and the ending was definitely a surprise. Did not see it coming. Clabe Polk has found his calling.
