Special Operative Caius “Sinner” Sinclair is the one Blackout Charlie team member that no one really seems to know what his exact skillset is other than making a really tasty pizza. When the FBI arrives at the mansion with one of their agents for a special mission, Sinner meets a woman who is a kindred spirit to him, guarding her secrets as fiercely as he does. Not only is she beautiful, but every emotion and thought is under extreme lockdown. Control is her first, middle and last names.

Opal Simmons is a pawn for the FBI. Coming from a troubled youth, the only people to ever have her back were her mom and a man named Smith. Her fierce protector, Smith taught Opal how to protect herself and fight back. She owed him her life. The one day that she was not around, she let him down and he died on her watch. Now she's working with the FBI, being assigned to a mission to help draw out the terrorist Cipher. Opal has always worked alone. She's never known any other life other than being alone. Now she's paired up with Sinner and must learn to work as a team if they both are going to make it through this mission alive. This is her personal moment of redemption for letting Smith down, to make sure that she always protects Sinner and makes sure that he comes back home to Blackout Charlie and the family he's created there.

Will these two lower their guard with each other and learn to trust one another? Or will they be unable to act as a team and fail their mission? Their attraction for each other runs hot but without trust, there's nothing to build a relationship or even friendship on. Will these two figure things out in time or will Cipher get the upper hand on them both?

Once again author Em Petrova wove a tale of suspense and intrigue that had me unable to put this book down until I had read every page. The ongoing arc in this series storyline is one that I never seem to tire of. This series is one I hope never ends.

"Sinner" is my new favorite book boyfriend! Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2026

If you love the "forced proximity" and "fake marriage" tropes, stop what you are doing and 1-click this book immediately!

The story follows Caius "Sinner" Sinclair, a SEAL who is usually known for making gourmet pizzas at the team’s mansion (love a man who cooks!). But things get serious when he’s tapped to lead an undercover op against a terrorist named Cipher. The twist? Sinner is former FBI—a secret he’s kept from his entire team until now.

He’s paired with Opal, an FBI asset with a heartbreaking backstory. She’s been in Witness Security since she was a kid, meaning she has no birth certificate or in fact any government documentation. She’s essentially a ghost trapped in a government system, and the resentment she feels toward the people "protecting" her is palpable.

They have to go from the luxury of the SEAL base to a gritty, run-down extended-stay motel. Sinner plays a construction worker with a "work injury" and a "pill addiction," while Opal is the overworked clerk trying to keep them afloat. They drive beat up cars and live in each other's pockets to attract Cipher’s attention.

The tension of these two living in that tiny motel room? The "only one bed" vibes are immaculate. It deals with plenty of issues such as identity loss and how the system fails the people it's supposed to protect not just the normal military hero vibe. Watching Opal realize that Sinner actually understands her FBI trauma because of his past was everything. They start off wary, but that "us against the world" feeling builds so beautifully. The slow burn is absolute torture (in the best way). Can't wait for the next book in the Blackout Charlie series!

Sinner and Opal . . .

Opal walked back to the shoddy motel 20 minutes after school let out, intense pain radiating from the swelling under her eye. A man she had seen the night before sat on a lawn chair. He had forced his way into the room as her parents were loudly fighting and whatever he said silenced them. Now he mentioned the black eye which she didn't have the previous night. She wasn't afraid of him for some reason, so she asked his name and he told her "Smith". He surprised her when he asked why she didn't fight back when the bruise was delivered. And she told him the kid was bigger than she was. Then he offered to teach her how to fight... and he gave her hope as she learned to never show weakness.

Caius Sinclair ("Sinner") is a SEAL chosen to lead the Blackout team mission to capture Cipher, a dangerous terrorist. His assigned partner is Opal, self-reliant and fierce, now working for the FBI. He is under cover as a weak injured man addicted to pain pills, while she is the struggling wife trying to support them. Being used to the "hero" role, he is unhappy that she has taken the lead and put herself into danger as they try to lure the terrorist closer. She also does not appreciate her overly-protective partner when she prefers to dive right in and depend on her own skills. The secrets each of them carry about their own backgrounds actually pulls them closer together and strengthens their trust in each other as she tells him about her only friend "Smith" who had told her if anything happened to him, go to the FBI and mention “Project Lazarus.” Would that revelation mean anything to Sinner? And would they be successful in their mission to lure in Cipher? Or would he have the upper hand if they finally clash?

In the tight-knit Blackout team—more family than coworkers—everyone knows each other inside out… except for the secrets Sinner’s been hiding. Those secrets come crashing out when the team brings in a new partner for him: Opal Simmons.
Opal grew up rough—brutality, homelessness, starvation—until the FBI gave her stability and purpose. Her only childhood ally was Smith, who taught her how to fight and survive. Now she’s paired with Sinner on a high-stakes undercover mission to trap the terrorist known as Cipher.
Their cover? A struggling married couple: he’s supposedly addicted to pain meds, they’re broke, and desperate enough to be useful to Cipher.
At first, neither Sinner nor Opal wants anything to do with the other. He hates playing the weak, drugged-out husband when he’s usually the team’s alpha tough guy. She’s not thrilled about the arrangement either. But as they spend time together, tension turns into trust, sparks fly, and they realize they’re made for each other.
Sinner’s protective streak goes into overdrive when Opal has to venture alone into dark, dangerous places. Their chemistry and growth are fantastic.
This is an addictive series with compelling characters and great team dynamics. Highly recommend if you love intense undercover ops, slow-burn romance, and found-family vibes!.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Shattered Oath (SEAL Team Blackout Charlie, Book 7) by Em Petrova

Shattered Oath finally pulls back the curtain on Sinner—and it was absolutely worth the wait. What starts as a mission assignment quickly becomes a deep dive into secrets, sacrifice, and a past that refuses to stay buried. The long-running question of what exactly does Sinner do is answered in a way that feels earned and powerful.

Opal is a standout heroine. She’s sharp, controlled, and shaped by years of being used as a weapon by the government. Her strength isn’t loud—it’s calculated—and that makes her connection with Sinner even more compelling. They recognize each other’s damage without needing explanations, and that quiet understanding fuels the intensity between them.

The chemistry is electric but never overshadows the mission. Instead, the romance heightens the stakes. Trust becomes a necessity, not a luxury, and watching these two navigate danger while fighting their growing attachment makes every scene hit harder.

This book delivers everything the series promises: found family moments, lethal competence, emotional depth, and a hero who would burn the world down for the woman he loves. The action is sharp, the pacing tight, and the emotional payoff deeply satisfying.

One of the strongest installments in the series—Sinner and Opal’s story is unforgettable.

Shattered Oath might be book seven, but it feels like the story Em Petrova has been quietly setting up all along. Sinner has always been the question mark on the team—the guy everyone jokes about because no one really knows what he does. Watching that mystery peel back layer by layer was deeply satisfying, especially when paired with a heroine as sharp and guarded as Opal.

Opal isn’t soft or wide-eyed. She’s been used, erased, and reshaped by powerful people, and it shows in every decision she makes. What I loved most about this pairing is that neither of them rushes trust. It’s earned slowly, under pressure, in moments where failure isn’t an option and vulnerability feels dangerous. The chemistry simmers instead of explodes, which makes every quiet touch and loaded look land harder.

The action is tight and tense, but the emotional stakes are what really carry this book. There’s a strong found-family undercurrent, a sense that these characters have already lost too much—and won’t survive losing each other. Sinner’s devotion is intense without tipping into cliché, and Opal’s strength never gets overshadowed by the romance.

If you like military romance with real suspense, layered characters, and a love story forged in fire rather than convenience, this one hits hard in the best way. Sinner and Opal don’t just survive the mission—they redefine what home looks like.

A young girl, forced to grow up too soon, had one friend she could count on and his name was Smith. When she couldn’t defend herself, Smith taught her how to take care of herself…to fight, to survive! Caius “Sinner” Sinclair has kept some personal distance, in regards to his past, from his teammates. He is known, however, for the delicious brick oven pizzas that he bakes. His commander, Con, has received credible intel that Cipher, the terrorist they have tried to take down, is returning to cause terror once again. The FBI has decided that one of their agents, Opal Simmons, be assigned to work with them to take him down. Due to her past, she has no legal identity of which Cipher would be aware. Sinner is not thrilled to be working with someone who is not a member of the team, but he soon recognizes her skills as they go undercover together. She is surprised to find that she is attracted to him as she has little to no experience with men. She is to try to get Cipher interested in them by needing to purchase drugs for her ailing husband, aka Sinner. Will their ruse work to draw Cipher out for a possible takedown? When the op becomes too dangerous, will Sinner ignore the command to wait for assistance in order to protect the woman he has come to love? An absolute thrilling addition to this amazing series with strong characters and their life mates. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. Sinner and Opal were made for each other.
The Blackout team is just like a close family. As a team, they care for each other, feel they know each other deep down, but Sinner has secrets, and they come out in this story. Opal, a new person, has been brought in to partner with Sinner on a dangerous mission to capture the elusive terrorist they call Cipher. Opal Simmons has been working in the FBI since she was young. Her background is filled with brutality, homelessness, and starvation; the FBI gave her stability. As a child, she had one friend, Smith, who took her under his wing. He protected her and trained Opal to fight and survive.
Sinner and Opal are going undercover as a married couple who are battling with his drug addiction to pain meds and their lack of money. They hope that Cipher will feel they can be of use to him. I loved the interactions between Sinner and Opal. Neither was happy in this partnership until they became close. Sinner was struggling with his part as a weak, drugged-out man when he’s usually the alpha tough guy. It really bothers him that Opal goes out alone into dangerous, dark places. This is an intriguing series. I love the characters. I received a free copy of this story from Booksprout, and these are my thoughts. Linda

Caius Sinclair (AKA Sinner) was a member of SEAL Team Blackout Charlie and the go-to guy for homemade pizza in their converted mansion which served as their base of operations. When their leader said Sinner was in charge of undercover operation with FBI asset going after terrorist Cipher. All members of the team were surprised when Con said he was uniquely qualified for the job as Sinner was former FBI... Opal was part of FBI since she had no place else to go, as put in Witness Security as child, so no birth certificate or social security number in her assigned name, so couldn't even get regular job...just with government who put her in this position. They were supposed to go undercover as married couple with him having work injury in construction company and addicted to pain pills and her working as clerk in government office, after downsizing from their home to extended stay motel and driving junker cars...perfect for how Cipher recruits...but will close proximity lead to trust, or will they find have more in common than either thought??? Opal is an FBI agent who is not considered a team player by her superiors. She is chosen to interface with Charlie team to try to capture the Cipher. She gains the attention of Sinner who is suspicious of her motivation and suitability for the mission.
They come to an agreement about the mission, but Opal has to defend herself from a drug dealer. She is concerned she will be pulled from the mission. Sinner recognizes she is spiraling and calms her down. The C.O. doesn't pull her from the mission. Sinner recognizes Opal has been isolated for years and comforts her which results in a sexual encounter.
The mission results in Opal being lured to Cipher's hideaway with a spectacular rescue event.
Sinner and Opal have a HEA ending, but they go through multiple trials to get there.
This story had a great plot, wonderful characters and plenty of heat.
I look forward to the next story in the series.

Shattered Oath is the 7th installment in the Seal Team Blackout Charlie series, and it delivers a powerful combination of action, emotional depth, and connection while keeping the focus on this couple’s story.

From their first meeting, Caius “Sinner” Sinclair and Opal Simmons are already simmering, and their common touch points in their past makes it easy to understand their quick connection. The trust between them feels earned, not rushed, and it adds depth to both the relationship and mission.

Their partnership keeps the story moving at a fast pace with a perfect blend between their relationship and the suspense of the story. One of the biggest strengths is the continued team dynamic. Seal Team Blackout Charlie consistently shows their sense of loyalty and unity to every situation. It’s one of the reasons this world is so easy to stay invested in, book after book.

Sending them undercover together, Sinner watches with a heavy heart as Opal must put herself in dangerous situations and he can't guard her. He feels protective from the start, which blurs the lines pretty fast.
Some things I find weird: the terrorist's first approach to Opal, and how and why he got information about them. Their mission is partly useless if their cover is revealed. At least they got the attention of the one they're looking for.
In the end, something good comes out of this undercover case: a couple with a common, rough background, a connection, built trust, and love.
Opal finds something she really never had: a found family who'll have her back and offer support.
For me, this story is about the MCs' road to each other, the heroine's scars, vulnerability, and belonging, and the hero's great pizza skills. Coincidentally, I had a slice while reading.

Opal and Sinner have more in common than they know. They both come with scars both physical and emotional, they are products of being put into Witsec at an early age and having the FBI scoop them up and rewrite their lives. The job of finding Cipher the terrorist brings them together and ties them emotionally from the first night . The storyline grabbed me from the first chapter and I loved how in depth the characters were. Seeing all of my favorite characters from previous SEAL Team Blackout Charlie books was the icing on the cake. My only complaint is they still haven’t caught Cipher and that just seems to drag on and bring down the drama I’ve come to expect from Em Petrova books. 4✨’s.

Sinner knows...

It's not just a lesson that he can teach her... it's a beginning. Opal has trusted him with her perceived weaknesses, her fears and most of all...her history and at that point, he knows....she has given him everything, including her heart.
They both have pasts that are brutal and heartbreaking, but are eerily similar. Some may see their history as a weakness that can be used against them, but for Sinner and Opal - it is their strength, especially when they work together. I love that we finally get Sinner's history and can understand him better, he is a complex man but is exactly the man Opal needs to offer her the freedom she deserves. Awesome!

Sinner and Opal are a perfect match, even if they both disagree. Opal is used to working alone but Sinner makes it clear that he's there to stay when they get chosen for a mission to find Cipher posing as husband and wife. Sinner has to take a back seat, which he doesn't like, while Opal puts herself out there. But Sinner quickly sees there is more to Opal than meets the eye and she has the skills to do her job and do it well. As time goes on, it's clear they have more in common than they realize and have very similar backgrounds. But how do they learn to trust one another to get past the heat and try to find something real? Everything you've come to expect and love about this series can be found in Sinner and Opal's story. You don't want to miss this one!

Sinner and Opal are two souls that crack your heart wide open. It’s the quiet ones who make you bleed the most, and the depth of their turmoil and longing cuts straight through the pages. The slow-burn intensity simmers painfully until it finally explodes—lines are crossed, walls fall, and love finds its way home. Their connection is hot and steamy, yet deeply vulnerable, making every moment feel earned. Once again, the camaraderie and unshakable bond of the team shines as a pillar of strength when danger closes in. Frustration builds as evil slips through the cracks, promising unfinished business and raising the stakes even higher. Absolutely gripping.

Book 7 of the Blackout Charlie series and it’s full of danger, healing, love and found family. Opal and Sinner both share similar tragic backgrounds and are paired on a Op to lure Cipher out into open once and for all. Although trust doesn’t come easy to either of them, living in close quarters allows Sinner to really see Opal, and he definitely likes what he sees and will do whatever it takes to keep her safe as she’s determined to complete their assignment regardless of the danger. An enjoyable read to the end. Thanks to BookSprout and the author for the opportunity to read and review her work.

A fast moving story with low action until the very end when Cipher makes another move. Sinner always been a man of little action, but this time he was called front and center to work the op as a married couple with FBI Agent Opal Simmons. Strangely enough they came from similar backgrounds coming from witness protection then to the FBI. They could not take their eyes off each other when they first met. Sinner's protect instinct took over immediately with him playing the part of Opal's husband. He found playing the part of a disabled, drug addicted husband offensive. A wonderfully written story.

A great story. Sinner is paired with Opal who comes to Blackout Charlie from the FBI to capture Cipher. They are both from challenging childhoods and are to act like husband and wife. Opal has learned to react to danger and will test the operation, while Sinner hates that all he does is act like a drug addict with a construction job. This book has them discovering how they each have the simular backgrounds, has Opal learning to trust when she never has before, danger and a happy ending. I enjoyed this book.

Shattered Oath is book 7 in the SEAL Team Blackout Charlie by Em Petrova and another awesome read in this series!

What happens when the FBI shows up at Blackout Charlie’s location with an asset they think can help lure Cipher out. Sinner is selected to work with Opal to make that happen but she has so many secrets, walls build to the sky, not a team player, which he is determined to break down the walls to find the woman behind them. Now they need to trust each other, have each others back and hopefully end Cipher once and for all…suspense, danger, chemistry, undercover ops, steamy and more…

SEAL romance.
Opal is a young woman with a complicated past, but thanks to a stranger, she left Quantico with excellent results. Now, she's integrated into a SEAL team on an infiltration mission to take down a hacker. But while playing the role of Sinner's fake wife, she finds herself gradually letting her guard down.
Sinner is a dead man in everyone's eyes except his SEAL team. He's reserved after all his hardships, but when he sees Opal, he understands that she's more complex than she seems.
Will Opal and Sinner have a beautiful love story, or will their investigation destroy them….

I have wondered about Sinner as I've been reading this series, I did not expect this to be his story, which made for good reading. I really liked how well matched he and Opal were, that they understood each other in way noone else could. I believed in their connection and chemistry and enjoyed seeing them come together whilst undercover hunting Cipher. I liked how open and honest they were able to be with each other, that Sinner taught her to trust in someone and showed her what a family his Team could be for her and what he would do to keep her save and make her happy.

Blackheart Charlie is more family than teammates (including their significant others} but no one has been more of a secret than Caius “Sinner” Sinclair who no one really knows what his skillset is, other than killer pizzas. Opal is a young woman who was forced to grow up fast from a troubled childhood. When Opal and Sinner are paired together to go undercover as a married couple, they begin to recognize similar strengths and skillsets in each other. Another GREAT Blackout Charlie story and I hope they keep adding additions to the team so I can continue to read their stories!.

Em Petrova has given me another riveting read that I became totally absorbed in. This features Caius “Sinner” Sinclair and Opals story. Both are loners for their own personal reasons and now find themselves having to learn to trust in each other for their assignment. It is fast paced, action packed story that continues the over arching Cypher plot. I enjoyed the found family camaraderie, the sizzling tension, and the unfolding of their relationship. Cannot wait for the next book in this fantastic series.

Opal has spent her life hiding. Having someone teach her to fight and try to get through anything that is thrown at her, has made her strong, yet she has no idea how to be part of a family.
Meeting Sinner and his team shows her what a family is. They are all also hiding, but they have made their own family, a family she can join if she chooses to trust that they will be there for her. Sinner sees her for exactly who and what she is, and she sees him for strong partner in the family she can have.

When they first meet, Sinner and Opal don't realize it but they share a similarity in their backgrounds. They are sent on a mission, and he isn't happy when he has to pretty much take a back seat while she is put out there as bait for Cipher. But she has more training than Sinner realizes.

Opal isn't exactly known as a team player but Sinner makes it known that he isn't going anywhere and he has her back. She gradually learns that she doesn't have to rely only on herself, and that's a good thing when her life is in danger.

This story really packs a punch. Sinner and Opal are thrown together as an undercover married couple in order to get closer to Cipher. There’s humour, spiciness, and thrills in this story. Loved the ‘thin walls’ scenes. Great to see all of the other team Charlie members playing such great parts in this story. I particularly liked the part where Sinner was talking to his ‘Uncle’. Opal and Sinner need each other to complete what they’d lost in their lives. Great story.

Great book! Opal and Sinner were so good together. Him so patient and Her strong and stubborn but flawed.

Going undercover to draw out Cipher a terrorist, Opal a FBI agent and Sinner a Blackout operative team up as husband and wife.

Steamy, romantic and not without danger and suspense. I enjoyed the dynamic between these two. I also loved the team that was showing Opal their family dynamic.

Great writing and plot that kept me entertained! So good!.
