American Storytelling

Race With Buffalo: And Other Native American Stories for Young Readers

Rate this book
The stories in this collection are vessels of century-old Native American lore, some of them perhaps brought to this continent by the original Native American settlers over 12,000 years ago. These stories include tales about ancient times, young heroes, tricksters, magical beasts and much more.

Great collection of unique Native American stories that I hadn't really read before. The most notable aspect is that the authors are Native American and recorded these stories from oral traditions and pow wows they attended as children. The author's note at the end is in and of itself a fantastic read, especially for history buffs. For instance, it is not allowed in Native American culture to record "sacred" stories in writing, so none of those are included. And all the stories had to be cleared with tribal leaders before they could be written down. This was a unique and enjoyable cultural read!
