The Unbreaking of a Heart

Rate this book
Her first love.
Her first heartbreak.
The boy who could've been her forever is back… and this time, he’s not choosing her.

Rose Callaghan knows better than to believe in fairytales. Not after everything. Not after the heart that failed her, the love that slipped through her fingers, and the years she’s spent convincing herself that almost is enough.

But once, there was a boy.

Carter Collins.
Her best friend. Her first kiss. The only person who ever made her believe in more.

They were inseparable as kids — bound by secrets, by hope, by the surgery that saved her life and the long, quiet summers that followed. Time pulled them apart, like it does with so many childhood promises. But even now, a part of Rose wonders if maybe they were just waiting for the right moment.

When Carter returns to London, everything she buried resurfaces.

Old feelings.
Old hopes.
Old fears.

Because loving someone is one thing.

Believing you’re chosen is another.

And when life delivers a reminder that time isn’t guaranteed, Rose must decide whether she’s willing to risk being second — or brave enough to demand being first.

Some hearts don’t break.
They wait.
Will this time Carter choose Rose?

This book contains no cheating and has a happily ever after. Your heart will be full at the end.
Promise.

The start of a brand new era in the world of Callaghan and Green. You do not have to have read the previous series to enjoy this, but if you love knowing everything, I would recommend.

We start with Rose, who works in a hospital and lives with one of her closest friends. Four friends are bonded through their childhood heart issues, and their bond is strong. Barraling back to London is Carter, who has been distant with the girls and is not explaining why. Rose and Carter have a very long history, and although Carter is a friend to them all, she always thinks of him as hers.

This is another fantastic story, and I was swept away and I really struggled to put it down and get on with real life. The dreamy backdrop of a brand new bookstore and all the talk of special editions are just one element that made this book so much fun. I adored Rose, and I cannot wait to see what happens with the rest of the girls in the next installments. If you love second chance romance this one is a swoony way to escape the real world.

A sweeping, emotional, utterly satisfying romance, The Unbreaking of a Heart is the kind of story that reminds you why you love love stories in the first place. Annie Dyer pours so much tenderness, longing, and quiet bravery into these pages that the book feels less like a read and more like an experience—one that settles deep in your chest and stays there.

3.5-4.0 stars. Rose (Seph/Georgia's daughter from the Callaghan Green series) is now 28 and it's time to find her HEA with Carter. Enjoyed the story but I wish more of the focus had been on Rose/Carter as a couple. Told in alternating chapters. the majority of the story was with and about Rose's relationships with her besties, or Rose dwelling overly much on most of her thoughts. Carter was on the fringe way too often.

The Unbreaking of a Heart
Heart Sisters #1
Annie Dyer
I DEVOURED this book! Ms Dyer writes the best characters, hands down, every single time. I pretty much spent a hot Saturday in this drizzly cold London book, I think I paused to eat but this can’t be confirmed. I just wanted to stay in a very cozy, familiar world with a new set of characters.
Rose Callaghan, brilliant, over-thinker with a mended heart. Carter, a boy who loved her from their first meeting as teens, now a fully grown adult smitten with his Rose. His dad was her cardiologist who bought her family home.
Rose is a neurodiverse, child psychologist who had heart issues when she was little, Seph and Georgia’s daughter from The Partnership.
Trademark Callaghan-Green banter with this new generation of friends who all met as sick kids is fun, dramatic and comforting all at once. For those fans of this author Seph and Georgia are present here as parents!!

“He’d told me he was single, but not available which now sounded like something from a cryptic crossword where the answer was wanker.”

Loved, loved, loved this book, chacterization is epic and a top read of 2026. I have read some bangers this year from all my favourite one-click authors and this one is exceptional. I can’t wait to read more of these friends: Fallon, Harriet, Erin and even Laurie. Oh and Orla and Quinn, Luke and Maxwell (named after THE Max)….
I received an arc of this book. It is part of a new spin-off series that those familiar with this author will love. It can be read as a stand-alone novel with hea.
5 stars.

Really enjoyed this book, but then again I love anything Annie Dyer publishes.
For those of you who read the Callaghan series, Rose is the daughter of Georgia, who married Seph Callaghan. At the end of engagement rate, which was the last book of the series Rose met Carter, they were both very young and Carter’s father had brought Rose’s grandparents house.
This book advances quite a few years, they are adults now and Rose has had heart surgery, and met three girls in her ward, and they have all remained friends ever since. The rest of the series will I assume follow her friends.
Rose and Carter have stayed close, even though he has been in America, and they contact each other all the time. She is then surprised when one of her friends tells her that Carter is moving back to London and is working at a hospital nearby. She is understandably hurt that he hasn’t told her and feels that he has been a little distant over the previous few months.
It is no secret, so I am not spoiling it, but Carter is engaged. It is not what is seems, but Rose is understandably very hurt. He explains everything and he is doing a friend a favour.
Their relationship does develop, not without a bit of angst. I loved Carter but was frustrated with him on a couple of occasions, mainly with this communication with Rose.
Without spoiling it, I was expecting there to be a more of a problem for them getting together but must admit that I am glad that there wasn’t.
I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

I am so glad to be back in Annie Dyer’s writing, I have been waiting for her next book and it did not let me down, her writing never does if I am being honest, and I am so eternally grateful to have been a fan for this long. Rose is Steph and Georgia’s daughter and met her four best friends while in the hospital for a heart procedure. Fallon, Harriet, and Erin were all patients as well, and Carter was the doctor’s son. Throughout their life, it has never been Carter and Rose’s turn, either one is not single, living on a different continent, or ending up in a arranged marriage situation to help a friend gain a trust fund.

When Carter comes back into town, he knows he wants to date Rose but he has some personal issues to prevent him from being able to fully commit. Rose spends time focusing on herself, her friend’s, and all the massive changes happening in her life, while also being willing to take risks and date Carter but also wanting to take it slow so she can process it all. I loved how much she focused on being rational and thinking things through, especially while being neurodivergent, it really showed how being accommodating and understanding those in your life can help build strong relationships but also avoid things like miscommunication and jumping to conclusions.

Rose and Carter are absolutely adorable and I loved them so much, and I cannot wait to get the other stories of Rose’s friends!

The Unbreaking of a Heart by Annie Dyer is Rose and Carter's story, and it was one heck of an emotional rollercoaster ride of a journey!

Rose is such a lovely character - having met her as a child, I loved seeing the woman she's grown to be! And I loved seeing her capacity for her work, her friends, and the one that has always been her one, whether she realized it or not, or perhaps, whether she is willing to accept it or not!

Carter is dedicated, driven, capable, loving, a man of his word, sometimes to his own detriment, but still with such care for his loved ones. Whether he's known it consciously or not, he's always had his one, and it's been a case of whether times have changed and aligned for them to come together.

I love friendship in this story, this world. Die hards and forevers and being in sync and being there and knowing what someone needs at anytime, including when to push and not to push. Processing emotions, being present, having someone's back. So beautiful.

This story is beautiful, sweet, spanning time, and all about all the different faucets of love. It's got tension, it's got a light bit of angst, and it's got passion and chemistry and more!

P. S. This Heart Sisters series is going to make and break my heart multiple times, and I'm so ready for it - what a punch in the gut in the best possible way!

P. P. S. Seeing familiar faces always is like getting the best warm and fully enveloped hug!

Written in first person from an alternating dual POV, this first book in a spin off series can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA.
Readers first meet Rose in the Callaghan Green series book 10. Readers see her meet Carter at the end of Elevator Pitch (book 11). This book begins almost 20 years later, and we learn of the enduring friendship they have shared. Rose is a character I have loved from the beginning. I love her brilliant mind and her ability to overthink things. Carter has just finished his medical residency in the US when he moved back to London in the hopes he and Rose might be able to be more than just friends. But he has also made a decision that complicates that and creates a little bit of doubt. I enjoyed that they know each other well enough to communicate well, even when it was difficult. I loved the tenderness and care they show each other. Though they certainly share an attraction, this book is not high on spice. It is open door, but not overly descriptive. The focus is on their relationship and their ability to adapt it from a deep abiding friendship to something more than can make it a lifetime.
This was a lovely emotional read and I am very excited to read the HEAs of Harriet, Fallon, and Erin when they come.

I looked forward to this book as it’s a chance to dip back into the Callaghan Green ( CG) world. Seph’s daughter Rosie’s the FMC and her childhood friend Carter ( whose family had bought the former CG family home). For the first time both Rose and Carter are single at the same time and with Carter returning to London - both in the same place. The story is interwoven with their back story and some past kisses and near misses but never being together. There is lots of yearning and a super slow build of the two together. Add in a potential spanner in the works twist ( no spoiler) and there’s a journey for the two together go on as they reconnect and actual get together. At times you wanted to just push them together and really not sure why friends or themselves didn’t do this before.
It’s a lovely character based story - a large part of the story is the relationship of Rose and her friends - the Heart sisters. All connected by heart surgery as kids. I am sure they will be part of future stories.
Wee snippets back into the CG world and the other cousins and uncles/ aunts which I loved.

Can be read standalone

I received this book as an ARC - these are my thoughts given voluntarily

This author is excellent at writing characters you could imagine encountering in your own life. Characters who have real jobs and real issues and OK, enough wealth to lead a comfortable existence but without being ostentatious about it. This particular book gives us a wonderful example of lasting female friendships, Rose and her three friends having met in hospital as teens while undergoing heart surgery, and for me that was the strongest part of the plot. The romance aspect felt a little flat in comparison, mainly due to Carter's actions: as someone who has known Rose for many years and is fully aware of how she processes change, he handles communications with her pretty badly. And fair enough, he's called out on it, but the way their relationship progresses didn't quite work for me. Despite that, I'd still recommend this to anyone looking for one of those "right person, wrong time" stories full of relatable situations, and also a tale which flows well without being in thrall to specific tropes.

Slow Burn, Childhood BFFs, Themes of Strong Female Friendships and Neurodivergence - Perfect!

Another winning start to a new series from Annie Dyer, although fans may recognize some of the "second generation" characters from the Callaghan Green series (which is not necessary to read, but fun for those of us who have). I enjoyed Rose and Carter reuniting as adults and former childhood BFFs with all of the history involved, and also since Rose is on the autism spectrum Carter knows and understands her communication needs (usually). These were handled with sensitivity and understanding by the author so the reader saw Rose as perhaps "different" but certainly not "less" which I really appreciated. I also loved the strong theme of female friendship - truly the "Heart Sisters" are a family running throughout the book and while this was Rose and Carter's story I am excited to read the rest of the sisters stories as well - Enjoy!

I was sent an ARC by the author and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

This is the first book in the Heart Sisters series, which follows four lifelong friends brought together through medical trauma. This is Rose Callaghan's story. We first met rose in "The Partnership" when she was five, the daughter of Georgia, a new partner in the Callaghan Green Law Offices. We then had another glimpse into her story in "Elevator Pitch" when she was 11. I won't give you those details, go and read the books yourself - they're worth it, and provide a bit of background to her story.

Rose met Carter when she was 11, and they have been besties ever since. He moved over to the USA for work, but was now back in London, with a fiancee in tow. Through some misunderstandings by them both, they find out that they really should be together as boyfriend and girlfriend, but not before some serious obstacles are overcome.

Rose as an adult is just gorgeous, just like her mum, and I look forward to the next friends' story in the series. I also love the portrayal of neurodiverse characters.

Thanks Annie for the ARC for an honest review. A genuine 5 stars.

Rose Callahan and Connor Collins met while she was in the hospital for repairs to a hole in her heart. They were close from a young age but time and adult responsibilities pulled them in different directions, although they still remained close friends.
Carter has been in the US for 5 years and returns to London. They tentatively attempt to restart their relationship, but quickly realize their relationship has drastically changed.
Their journey, for Rose is emotional and fraught with inner turmoil that would never have seen the light of day if her friends wouldn’t have brought them to the forefront. For Carter, the risk he takes is difficult but no less frightening.
This is a unique and beautiful story with well- crafted characters and emotional heartfelt journeys that will not soon be forgotten. The side characters stay with us as well.
This is a slow burn, middle adult love story with all the gorgeous and quippy writing that Annie Dyer writes in all of her books. The start to a truly engaging new series.

The Heart Sisters will absolutely steal your heart away. Each one totally different from the other. This is Rose’s turn. She’s a Callaghan. If you’ve read any of the Callaghan/Green books you’re certainly be delighted to be back. Rose is extremely different from the rest of the clan. She’s reserved, pensive, thorough, smart, talented and completely in love with Carter, even if she never realized until now Carter and Rose have been friends since they met. To say best friends is inadequate. Timing has always been off with them. Now when everything should be clear sailing he winds have shifted in another direction.

I don’t do spoilers because it isn’t fair to the author or the reader. What I will say is you will be caught up in this heartwarming yet stressful situation of these two made for each other individuals. This author brings so much realism to this story. You can’t help but form your own opinions.

If you’re looking for a sweet read that will capture your heart this is the book for you.

This is Rose and Carter’s story. She is Seph’s daughter. He is the boy who moved to her grandparents house and was also her heart surgeon’s son. It was like a slow burn romance because it started such a long time ago, when they were kids. They had some moments over the years, but the relationship hadn’t blossomed. However, now as adults it seemed they’d finally get a chance, only there was a situation interfering. It was a plot twist! It was a difficult situation that they were able to get over. In the end they get a HEA, an alternative one, as their relationship hasn’t completely and fully blossomed it seems.
I forgot to mention we also meet other young ladies, heart sisters of Rose, who also had heart surgery as kids, met at that time, and continue to be close friends now.

It was so nice being back in the Callaghan Green world, with Seph's daughter Rose now being an adult. Carter and Rose spent so much time together when they were kids as Rose had health problems and Carter's dad was her doctor. They were close friends once upon a time and I loved seeing bits from their childhood mixed in with today. Rose is on the spectrum and has autism so she needs time to process things and was upset she found out from her friends that Carter would be moving back to their area and working in the same hospital that Rose does. My heart felt for both of them as Carter returns with a secret and doesn't know how to tell Rose nor does he know if their friendship will survive once she finds out. This is such a great book!

This book hooked me from the very beginning! I loved Rose and her friend group, and this was a great start to a new series. It is also part of an ongoing series as it is connected to the Callaghan Green books, but you can jump in here even if you haven't read those before.

Rose and Carter were friends as kids and she has had deeper feelings for him, but thought they weren't reciprocated. When Carter moves back to town, though, their relationship ends up changing and their chemistry and connection prove to be stronger than ever. I really enjoyed the characters, writing, and London setting. This was a great read and I didn't want to put it down!

I absolutely loved this book, I couldn’t put it down and read it within 24 hours!

Rose and Carter met when they were children and were best friends, they spent a lot of time together and as they grew older were always there for each other, even when Carter moved to America, they kept in touch.

Rose is autistic and needs time to get used to things and process her thought, so when she found out through one of her best friends that Carter was moving back home she was hurt and upset that he never told her.

Carter is a surgeon with a secret, and he just doesn’t know how to tell Rose, so he keeps the secret until he has to tell her. He is really worried about how Rose will take the news and whether they can both get through the next few months and be more than just friends.

The Heart sisters are four best friends with a special unbreakable bond, and they certainly won’t let one their own get hurt.

This book has it all. Young love, heartbreak, challenges, and friendship. The fierce and genuine connection they shared and the absolute beauty of their friendship provides a rock solid base to build this engaging story off of. Rose & Carter’s connection, banter, chemistry, and tension was phenomenal! All of the FEELS with this one! I absolutely LOVED this romance - the friendship, the emotions they experience, the push and pull, between them is off the charts! This book hooked me from the get go and I couldn’t put it down. It had me laughing, crying, mad, and swooning. Sometimes all at the same time. Do yourself a favor and one-click this book right now.

We met Rose in Seth Callaghan's book, but now we get her as an adult! Her and Carter were childhood friend's as his father was her heart surgeon. Rose processes life differently than others and Carter was warned off by Seth when he was just eighteen, so they remained friends for years until Carter came back to London to fulfill a promise to a friend. The way he takes care of Rose and lets her be her was so fun to read, and seeing them fall in love with each other was amazing! Great read!

The story I have been waiting for - Rose and Carter. Rose is Seph’s daughter and the son of her heart surgeon. Friends since children Carter is more than that to Rose and doesn’t want to rock the boat with their friendship. When Carter tells her he is engaged, her world seems to fall apart. This is a story of love, trust and surprises along the way. I am excited for this new series from Annie and can’t wait for the next one.

Being back in the CG world always makes my heart so happy and that we start with Rosie was a delight! Rosie and Carter are definitely a slow burn with us seeing them through the years, however it never being the right time ... until now. I loved seeing Rosie and Carter get to know each other on a deeper level and see how the time is right for them now as well as I got to meet the Heart Sisters who I absolutely can't wait to get to know more!!

I’ve been waiting for this book, and it didn’t disappoint. The story follows Rose and her childhood friends, whom she met in the hospital, especially Carter. They always had bad timing growing up. Carter moves away to the USA, but when Carter comes back, they finally get a chance. I loved how sweet and emotional their story is. Rose focuses on herself and takes things slow, and their relationship felt really cute and meaningful, and I can't wait for the next book.

Don’t want to give anything away but definitely a different twist on second chance. Carter and Rose grew up together as friends and have stayed in touch while he was gone. But when he returns to town he does have some complications that would impede them having a relationship. Well written and great story telling. This author always has a way of telling a story that is original. Looking forward to the other characters stories.

The Unbreaking of a Heart by Annie Dyer

I fell in love with Annie Dyer's writing through her Callaghan Green Series.  Here we come full circle with Rose's story in the Unbreaking of a Heart.  It is a second generation story (Steph's daughter) and a joy to see some of the familiar characters. Although I recommend that series to everyone, it is not necessary to have read it to follow this.

What you will find here is a childhood friends to lovers story, exceptional writing and the beginning of a fantastic new series about a group of heart sisters brought together by extraordinary circumstances.

ARC provided by the author, and this is my honest review.

Rose Callaghan had heart surgery as a teen where she met 3 (Erin, Harriet, Fallon) who also required surgery of varying severity. As a result, she met her surgeons son, Carter Collins, her first kiss, her first crush. But they became friends, not lovers. They are now in their late 20's, early 30's and he has moved back to London.

Loved book 1 of this new series. This is a 2nd generation of the Callaghan Greene family although you don’t need to read those prior to this. Rose and Carter have liked each other since teenagers but the timing was never right. I enjoyed getting to know this group of friends who bonded over childhood heart conditions. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
