Her sacrifice will save a kingdom, while her love will slowly destroy it.Over a hundred years have passed since the Goddess took Elsie’s mother and her fated bond away from the Kingdom of Gaia. They remain safe in the human realm, but this safe time is at an end. Death hunts for them, searching for the one blessed with light magic.
Elsie is training and waiting for the Goddess’ call to return to Gaia. She plans to break the curse that is plaguing the kingdom and finally kill the God of Death. However, she faces a problem. To defeat Death Elsie must bond and tie her magic to two witches in Gaia she has never met before. With her heart already belonging to another, Elsie must fight the pull of her fated bonds and fight to protect the one she loves.
With every passing day, more lives are lost. Enemies get closer and secrets begin to unravel. Elsie must find a way to kill the God of Death or be consumed by the shadows she is meant to destroy.
I really enjoyed this fantasy filled with fate, sacrifice, and high stakes. The story follows Elsie as she’s called back to Gaia to break a devastating curse and face the God of Death, even though doing so means forming fated bonds with two witches she’s never met while her heart already belongs to someone else. The emotional conflict between destiny and choice adds a strong romantic tension to the plot.
The pacing keeps the danger and mystery building as secrets unravel and the threat grows closer. If you enjoy light-magic heroines, fated bonds, and a romance that clashes with destiny, this one delivers a dramatic and engaging start to the story.
2 Stars ⭐️ Thank you to LoveNotesPR for this ARC! 🖤
Okay, so... going into this ARC, I haven't read the first book within this series. It felt like I was missing some content, and I was confused for a while. With that, I feel like it was just a bad start which tainted the rest of my reading experience for the book, and I struggled to get into it after that.
Books like this, however, I genuinely right down my alley! When I'm no longer drowning in an ARC mountain, I do plan on reading book 1 before giving book 2 another shot!<3
So amazingly written. The world building was phenomenal. I was so immersed in this story because of the vividness that this was written with. The description and the characters, just beautiful. The one thing I loved about this was the way it pulled you in and kept you captivated throughout. I loved the twists and turns, the chaos that took place and the resolutions. Just a fabulous story. I loved every minute of this.
Okay, where do I even begin? This book was an absolute page-turner! I enjoyed it from start to finish. This is my first ARC that I’ve had the chance to receive, so many thanks to lovenotespr and authorvachild!💗
I only realized at about 38% into the book that she was bound to two people within the same body. That actually turned out to be a positive, as it made for a real plot twist for me. Toward the end, it just kept getting better and better, the challenges Elsie faced and the different friendships/bonds that were formed.
You really become immersed in the story. By the end, I genuinely felt what Elsie was feeling in that moment. I’ve never experienced that this strongly with a book before! If there’s a sequel, I will definitely read it.
Thank you to V.A. Child and LoveNotes PR for the opportunity to read this exciting story.
Our story begins over 100 years after the end of book 2. Elsie has trained every day of her adult life to rescue a world she's never seen. A world her father died for. But the man meant to be her father figure, has turned her training into punishment. As a result Elsie has never felt part of the family. She believes her sole purpose is to die for a realm consumed by the God of Death. Karl and Alpha, her best friend and boyfriend, are determined to be by her side through it all. The night they've trained for finally arrives and they learn nothing is as they believed it to be in Gaia. The trio must learn the new lay of the land and whether to trust the new people they meet along the way. Can Elsie save the world before it's too late, or will she lose herself and everyone she loves in the process?
Elsie was a very different character than Nessa (book 1). Her story was no less heartbreaking. The threads that V.A. Child weaves create this beautiful web of mystery, longing, and distrust. Just when you think you have the story figured out, she rips the rug from under you. I loved how despite feeling like an outsider her whole life, Elsie never stopped fighting for others and their right to choose. Alpha was a strong and steady force at her back. He was her champion and her rock. Karl, bless the man for silently loving her, but man…pick your battles. Damien and Cathal were unexpected characters and exactly the challenge and contrast that Elsie needed. I loved the way the mystery unfolded and left me begging for more. I can't wait to see how our characters come back in Book 3!

Cursed By Shadows was an ARC received by @lovenotes.pr and @authorvachild . Thank you SO much. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
4.5🌟 2🌶
What to expect -RH/Why Choose -childhood friends to lovers -fated mates✨️ -intense training and high stake battle -found family!! Can't express this enough🥺 -touch THEM and die -they would burn the world for her, she would plunge it all into darkness for them.
The FMC is fierce, loyal, she was molded into a weapon, a tool to save the kingdom. But she is kind, she is compassionate and despite the darkness she sees in herself, she is a beacon of light!
We have 3 MMCs, Alpha is hot headed and reckless but he would do anything for Elsie. He is foul mouthed, primal and doesn't care about anyone except Elsie.. until Damian. He also shares a body with Karl. Karl is our level headed alpha, leader to a pack he has intense loyalty to. Hes also where a childhood friends to lovers trope comes in to play, he has loved her from the start. He is the opposite to Alpha; where alpha is reckless and hot headed, Karl is methodical and plans out things rationally and he doesn't really like violence.. until necessary. Our 3rd MMC is Damian. He's a tortured soul who sees himself as a monster, he doesn't see himself as worthy until Elsie helps him believe otherwise.
It was great to see these bonds unfold and deepen. I would have liked to see the chemistry grow more, and more moments together but I guess thats hard in the middle of life and death. I also felt the pacing was a little slow, however it didn't last for long before I was hooked again!
I enjoyed the plot twists, the magic system and world building. Its a new concept for me. The atmosphere that was forged, piece by piece, emotion by emotion, was fantastic. Towards the end, it actually made me teary, without spoiling, it was a moment to do with her dad.
But I am STRESSED.. because what do you mean the book ended there? What do you mean I have more questions and no answers? Helpppp
Cursed by Shadows by V.A. Child, provided via Love Notes PR, is a compelling continuation of the series that expands the emotional stakes, magical world-building, and relationship tension introduced in book one without losing momentum.
The story continues Elsie’s journey as she navigates dangerous magic, emotional conflict, fate, sacrifice, and the growing pressure surrounding both her powers and her relationships.
One of the strongest aspects of the book is how emotionally immersive the story feels while still maintaining strong fantasy elements throughout the plot.
Elsie continues to grow as an FMC while balancing the emotional burden placed upon her by destiny, love, sacrifice, and the dangerous world surrounding her.
Karl/Alpha also adds emotional depth and tension throughout the story, and the relationship dynamics between the characters continue to evolve in emotionally compelling ways.
What stood out most to me overall was how unique this series feels compared to many other fantasy romance books I’ve recently read. The world-building, emotional conflict, magical elements, and relationship dynamics all blend together in a way that keeps the story feeling fresh and addictive.
I also appreciated that the continuation from book one felt seamless and emotionally satisfying rather than losing momentum.
And honestly, I intentionally do not want to spoil anything specific about the story because this is absolutely the type of book readers should experience for themselves without too much revealed beforehand.
Overall, Cursed by Shadows is an emotionally engaging fantasy romance filled with magic, destiny, sacrifice, emotional tension, and compelling world-building that continues to strengthen the series in the best way.
Whatever I thought might happen… it wasn’t it. The direction this story takes feels like a bold shift while still fitting perfectly within the world. At this point, I’m fully bonded to this series (iykyk 🥵🔥).
If you’re picking this up and browsing reviews, please trust me and read book one first. But if you’re the kind of chaos reader who doesn’t care about order, fine… here’s your hook: think SJM style magic with Ravenhood level romance, with a subtle hint of Harry Potter woven in.
Returning to what was already a barren wasteland, everything has changed and with it, the stakes, the goals, and the choices that have to be made. This story really leans into those harder questions: what would you sacrifice for the greater good? And can you live with the decisions that get you there?
Like the first book, this isn’t heavy on traditional world building. Instead, we experience everything through the FMC/MMCs; learning as they learn and feeling it as they do. It makes the story more immersive, and reinforces why starting with book one matters.
This is the kind of series that pulls you apart and pieces you back together. I’ve already gone back to reread sections and can tell there’s more hidden beneath the surface, those details you miss the first time because you’re so caught up in needing to know what happens next.
Highly recommend not just this book, but the entire Kingdom of Gaia series.
I was so excited to continue this storyline and this book did not disappoint!! Am I crazy to say that I liked this book better than the first?! The FMC, Elsie, has trained her whole life to eliminate the God of Death from another realm called Gaia. If you've read the first book, you'll know why they're in the human realm. I really wish we got more flashback moments of Elsie and Karl/Alpha growing up. A real big shocker that I ended up LOVING Alpha whose a werewolf...girl can I be more predictable? The premise that one person has a split soul is really cool when they're kind of opposites. This storyline is filled with so much action from the beginning when she's training with Aarron to when the realm splits open to everything that happens in Gaia. The premise is the same as the first book; Elsie is a descendant of the Goddess and she will have 2 bonds to defeat the God of Death. I think this story is more interesting since she's a little *too* close with Karl/Alpha (iykyk). The plot twist kind of just slap you in the face cause I did not see that coming and also the fact that her other bonded is part vampire. This whole love triangle was giving Twilight but better and more fantasy vibes. Overall, I REALLY like this story and the way it ended...WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S DARK OUTSIDE!?!?!? I will be impatiently waiting for the next book cause this story is not finished yet!!
I received an ARC of Cursed by Shadows by V. A. Child, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to read it.
I really enjoyed this book! The story is intriguing and brings together so many fantasy elements I personally love: gods and goddesses, the Kingdom of Gaia, vampires, werewolves, curses, light and shadow magic, and morally grey characters. The world felt exciting, and I liked that the plot was not only focused on the romance, but also on the larger conflict, the curse, and the danger surrounding Elsie.
The book definitely has spicy moments, though it was not quite as spicy as I expected it to be. For me, that actually worked well because the fantasy plot still had enough space to develop. Elsie’s journey, her complicated bonds, and the threat of the God of Death made the story tense and engaging.
The pacing was a little slow for me, especially in the beginning, but once the story picked up, I found myself much more invested. There were also several twists I did not see coming, which made the second half especially enjoyable.
Overall, Cursed by Shadows is a great fantasy romance with an interesting world, morally complex characters, and a story that becomes more and more gripping as it unfolds.
V. A. Child's Cursed by Shadows is book two in the Kingdom of Gaia series, and is guaranteed to take readers on a wild ride.
Having given her heart to one person only to have it taken away from her, Elsie is on a mission to stop the one who has forced her to give up so much. Unfortunately, to save everyone, she has to bond with two witches she doesn't know. That doesn't stop her from attempting to save everyone, including her family. But, Elsie has to figure out, is she strong enough to take on the one who took her family from her? Is she strong enough to admit her heart belongs to more than one person now? Can she stand with her new "mates" (witches) and protect those that need protecting, or will she fail, and watch those that she loves fall?
The passion Ms. Child uses to write with makes itself clear right from the start of the book. Readers get drawn into the characters lives, and almost expect them to be real by the time they finish the story. Ms. Child has a way of drawing readers in, and by the time they read the first few chapters, they have a have a difficult time putting the book down when it is time to do something else, especially going to sleep. The phrase "just one more chapter " was made for Cursed by Shadows, only one more is never enough.
Cursed by Shadows was such an emotionally intense read for me. I loved the darker atmosphere, the shadow magic, and the constant tension throughout the story. Elsie’s emotional journey and relationship dynamics felt messy in a way that actually kept me invested because nothing felt predictable.
I also really liked the complexity behind Karl’s character. There’s this constant duality to him where he feels protective and controlled one moment, then darker and almost consumed by the shadows the next. I loved that the story blurred the line between what was truly Karl and what was being amplified by the bond and darkness around him because it made their dynamic feel emotionally unpredictable in the best way.
This definitely leans more into emotional chaos, obsession, and morally gray relationship dynamics than deep fantasy world building, but honestly that’s what made it addictive for me. The chemistry, angst, and emotional push and pull carried the story. There were a few moments where I wanted more depth from the plot itself, which is why this wasn’t a full 5 star for me, but overall I still had a really good time reading it.
Thank you to Love Notes PR for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Arc review of Cursed by Shadows First of all thank you to the author and Love Notes Pr for the opportunity to read and review this fantastic book!!🥹✨🫶 My rating:⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐.5
Omg what an amazing book and adventure this was!!! I must confess I didn't read the first book in this series (but I'm so invested in the series I might read it 🤭✨). I loved the main character Elsie, she grew up training every day to defeat some evil god and save everyone but what about her, she deserves to live a beautiful life with people who love her by her side, and that's when the MMCS step in!! I haven't read many why chose books and oh boy this one definitely didn't disappoint 🤭🔥 I loved the pet names they gave her and the spice was spicy 🫣🤭
I also really liked the adventure and action aspects, we follow the main characters throughout this dangerous journey, with all the problems that come with it and I think the action parts were really well written!! And OMG the last scene!?!!!! Now I NEED the third book ASAP!!!!🙌🙌🙌
I recommend this book to all of the romantasy/fantasy and why choose girlies, you'll eat this up!! 😝🖤🙌
Cursed by Shadows by V.A. Child completely pulled me in from the start. Set over a century after the previous book, Elsie has trained her whole life to save the cursed kingdom of Gaia and defeat the God of Death — even if it costs her everything. When she’s forced to bond her magic to two witches she’s never met (while already in love with someone else), the emotional and magical stakes skyrocket. Around 38% in, I realized she was bound to two people within the same body — and that twist made the story even more fun. The tension builds beautifully toward the end, and I genuinely felt what Elsie was feeling in those final chapters. Her resilience, Alpha’s steady devotion, and the complicated dynamics with Karl and the others made the relationships shine. The pacing occasionally leans into familiar fantasy territory, but the immersive writing and emotional depth more than make up for it. Overall, a gripping, heartfelt fantasy that left me eager for the next book. I’ll definitely be reading the sequel!
Cursed By Shadows is a dark romantasy with fated mates/bonds and a path to save everyone. This is Elsie, Karl, Cathal, and Damian's story, filled with unexpected moments, trickery, and an evil lurking. Elsie is a witch who has to save the kingdom by saving Gaia with her bond/mates. I love how the story takes you on an adventure, but also will take you through an emotional roller coaster of love and trust. I love how she went through all the trickery and enemies wanting to bring her down, she still found her path to save the kingdom. I love how Elsie is a strong, powerful character and how her mates guide and support her. Their story brings them close, but with all the twists, they find the threats still lurking and who is there real allies. I really enjoyed their story and love the world building. I can't wait to read more.
I voluntarily leave my honest thoughts about this gifted advance reader copy.
Thank you, V.A. Child and Love Notes PR, for providing me with a complimentary ARC of Cursed by Shadows.
I am absolutely in love with this book, which was a total shock to me since I am not much of a fantasy fan. I loved the characters, love my man Karl!! Elsie is so well written as well; she's a true reluctant hero. I loved everything about it, even if at times the pacing was off by a few. Even though the tension was beautifully written, I would sit at the edge of my seat,t wondering what was going to happen. "Look at me. I'm not leaving you. I will follow you anywhere." AH MY HEART! I am so re-reading this and the rest of the series as it continues, the ending as well, in such a way to keep us waiting for the next one. I can't wait to read more!!
I must say I loved book 2 more than book 1, mainly because of how much I loved Elsie. This book focuses on Elsie the daughter of Nessa and Lachlan, with Aarron as a 'father figure'. Elsie is strong willed, smart and determined to fight against the God of death, whether she has help or not. I loved the pet names they all have for her, Alpha calls her kitten, Cathal calls her Little bond and Damian calls her Terror. I really hated Aarron as the way he treated Elsie was horrible, seeming to only care about Nessa and Mary. There are so many plot twists which truly made the book amazing, I loved every bit of it. The surprise at the ending was so good too (I'm calling it surprise so I don't spoil), the cliffhanger at the end made everyone realise the trap they put themselves in. I can't wait for book 3.
Thank you Love Notes PR & V.A. Child for this ARC read
This story is a whirlwind, with some spice thrown in to show the depth of the bonds. When I thought I knew where things would go, I was sooo wrong. This story kept me engaged, even through all the world building. So much happened. So much adventure, and deep feelings, both good and bad. The pulls that have a hold of Elsie are so intense. It makes you wonder how she is not going insane. I did not know that this was a book 2 in a series, but it was easy to catch on to what was happening. I will be going back to read book one now too. Such a great adventure and I can’t wait for the next book.
What to expect: 🤔 Reluctant Hero 🤭 Forbidden Love 🥰 Why Choose ✨ Fated Mates 🧡 Friends to Lovers 🤗 Found Family
ARC REVIEW 4 2.5 Check your triggers Thank you to V.A.
Absolute loved this one!! And all the different characters in it and can’t wait for book 3!!!
I'm really grateful that I got the chance to ARC read this book. I have to admit that I didn't read book 1. Because of that it took a while until I totally understood what the book is about and who all the characters were. When I finally got it, I couldn't stop reading because the book has a lot of suspense.
I have to admit that the book has great good plot twists and I'm very happy for the FMC that she finally had a family that cares about her instead of her own 'family' that just treated her like she was just a sacrifice and she had to die.
I honestly don't know if I would read part 3, but I think i would because I did have a good time whilst reading this book.
I was lucky enough to be part of the ARC team to read this book before its release, and below are my honest thoughts!.
If you like: Reluctant Hero, Forbidden Love, Why Choose, Fated Mates, Friends to Lovers, Found Family
Review: This book drug me in put me on my toes and had me YELLING “WHY”. El is a total bad🍑. Alpha is 🤤 and Damien is perfect (you can’t change my mind) Crused by Shadows left me begging for more with so many questions (in a good way) that this will be a series I go back to and reread before book 3 drops! This book beats book 1 by far with the characters, twists and the ending!
This is book two in the Kingdom of Gaia series. Elsie has trained her whole life to be the hero for her people and land. Karl, Alpha, Cathal, and Damian help her along her journey to break the curse and kill the God of Death. My favorite characters were Alpha and Damian, I loved their bond and how they helped each other. I was so happy that Elsie found the people who made her feel like there was more to her than what she was trained for. I recommend this book for readers who like romantasy with hot werewolves and vampires. I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
This story is an exhilarating rollercoaster, masterfully weaving in elements that showcase the profound bonds between characters. Just when I thought I had predicted the twists, I was completely caught off guard. It kept me on the edge of my seat, even while unfolding an intricate world. So much unfolds—an abundance of adventure accompanied by a spectrum of emotions, both uplifting and challenging.
The powerful influences that grip Elsie are nothing short of compelling, leaving you to marvel at how she maintains her sanity amidst the chaos.
*Thank you to LoveNotes PR for the opportunity to read this ARC*
Wow this was certainly a wild ride. This had a little bit of everything sprinkled in. Werewolves, vampires, witches, etc.
I really enjoyed the characters. Even the “bad” guys had a certain something about them.
There was never a dull moment, and I feel like I even caught myself holding my breath more often than not. Overall I really enjoyed this and I cannot wait for book three!
Also, WHAT AN ENDING!!!
Damian better be protected at all costs. Just saying.
Honestly, I struggled to enjoy this. It was confusing, felt so incredibly rushed and I could not keep up with the amount of nicknames used for the FMC & mate/bonds and a few of them were very odd nicknames.. I normally fuck with nicknames but these ones just weren’t it. The only thing that really stood out and was well structured was the spicy scene and even that alone couldn’t save my rating for this read.
I thought that Cursed by Shadows was a really good read!
I throughly enjoyed this read, I liked the fated mates aspect of it but it also has the why choose which was a fun avenue, I really liked the characters also.
I haven’t been the most adamant Romantasy reader but I thought this one was really good and executed brilliantly, it’s definitely a book I’d highly recommend adding to your TBR and reading for sure.
This pulls you straight into a gritty fantasy world with curses, danger, and a slow burning, high stakes romance that keeps everything feeling intense and emotional. The story has that “just one more chapter” pull that makes it hard to put down. If you like your fantasy a bit darker, a bit messy, and very emotionally charged, this one absolutely delivers. Make sure you read book 1 as both are extremely addictive!
I really enjoyed this fantasy romance that I was lucky enough to get an ARC of. I loved the aspect of our main character having multiple bonds so we were in kind of a love triangle situation. The pacing was a bit slower to me but I still found the story quite enjoyable and it caught my attention enough that I'd love to read the next volume as well. I also really enjoyed the world building and even though there's romance the story focused a lot on the other main points.
This book grabbed my attention right away and I couldn’t stop reading. Sometimes fantasy books can take me awhile to get into, but not this book!
It’s been 100 years since Elsie was spirited away to the human world. Now it’s time to defeat the God of death, but to do that she must tie herself to people she has never met, while her heart belongs to another!
The storytelling is so great and I was immediately drawn into the story!
