Book: Breed-Book 1 of the Breed Series Author: Colet Abedi Genre: YA Dystopian 🅢🅤🅜🅜🅐🅡🅨 Breed takes place in the year 2999 AD. Earth is now split into four kingdoms and humans have all become hybrids. These include mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Siren, a 17 year old, is from another kingdom whose people faced genocide at the hands of another kingdom. Now it is up to Siren to return to Earth to save her people from extinction. However, when she crashes on Earth, she lands in enemy territory. There she is rescued by Aedan, the ruler of the Kingdom of Om, the very kingdom that massacred her people. Siren must keep her breed a secret in order to survive. 🅡🅔🅥🅘🅔🅦: This book took me totally by surprise. Dystopian books are not typically something I gravitate toward, but I wanted to try something new. The world building in this book is fantastic, The plot is fast paced. The characters in this book were all dynamic and interesting. I loved Siren, she was an introvert that wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself. The book also contains action, politics, and romance. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Breed is an entertaining book and captivated my interest and attention. It's storyline is intriguing and very creative. The book is well written and the character development and dialogues well crafted and developed. I would also recommend this book as a great source to incite ones imagination to soar into other potential worlds.
The blurb does not do this story justice! If you are looking for a fast-paced dystopian sci-fi adventure that transports the reader to a wonderfully crafted universe filled with eccentric personalities, unique species and edge of your seat suspense Then this is for you!
Siren, who is much older than her 17yrs would have you believe, is on a mission to save her species. Like all things that we plan to perfection - everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Trapped in a hostile land reliant on a species that has always been her enemy Siren must find a way to protect her true identity while completing her mission
Can she survive the OM long enough to make it to B or will her true genetic identity be discovered before she can escape?
I was not sure what to expect going in as this was a new author for me so I really did not foresee that once I picked this up I would be compelled to finish it in one sitting. The story was unique and easy to follow. The author did a great job of transporting me into the story, making me feel like I was actually there. I was cringing and laughing and making all those facial expressions and verbal cues (don't laugh, you just wait, I promise you can't help it) The characters are so vivid and easy to connect with. I couldn't help but feel some form of attachment to them - well most of them there are a couple I would like to toss to the R people who have the sharpened teeth! So much was packed into this first in series and yet I didn't feel like I was reading an outline. All the important pieces fit into the story easily. I am not even sure how to explain it (why I am not a writer). A fabulous first in series that I recommend for those who enjoy YA sci-fi with a twist
This ends on a bit of a cliffy (fine a major cliffy) that left me really wishing it was longer or the second in the series was out now.
Set in a dystopian world a 1K in the future, Breed shows how brutal Earth has become when humans annihilate themselves. Humans are now hybrids that live in their own separate lands and power and greed are at the forefront. The saddest part is that these groups are dying out because reproduction is almost extinct.
Siren is a Cetacean hybrid who’s very existence was intended to be wiped out by the other groups because they feared her kind. But on a mission to Earth to save her group, she finds herself questioning her preconceived notions about Earth’s inhabitants when she’s rescued by Aedan. At first mistrusted, she finds herself welcomed when she saves a young woman’s life. But not everything is as it seems when she discovers there are those who will do anything to maintain their existence even at their leaders’ expense.
This book serves as metaphor to events happening now. It shows how fear and hate can push people to do unthinkable things and how they can destroy. Though older, I enjoyed the book and look forward to the series since it ended on a cliffhanger.
* I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.
I love the intricacies of this new world. I’ve been trying to piece together all the different races & kingdoms. I think that’s what I like about this book so much is that it’s a completely different world than I’ve ever read about. I do wish we got to see more of the other kingdoms. The reptiles creep me out & so does Dr. Novak. Theres so much going on in this book. The fight/divide within OM, all the kingdoms fighting each other, the divide between breeds, Siren’s arrival, & survival of all human life. It’s definitely a lot & Im looking forward to seeing what happens next. I really love Aedan & Siren together. I personally think it’s fate that those two meet. Although I have to say I really don’t like how it ended. I thought Siren was better than that ending but it also leaves it on a major cliffhanger so I’m really hoping I’m wrong!

BREED is a YA novel that has captured my attention, filled my imagination with colorful scenes, skillfully portrayed characters and events that took twists and unexpected turns, some resolve while others leave us hanging with curiosity to find resolution in future editions.
The character development is cleverly and deeply involved with history the Breeds share, many commonalities and as well as interesting differences that are born with the human/animal genetic structures. But, life as we humans know it is represented with societal structures, teachings and moral values the BREED’s lives can destabilized with the switch to animal body and instinct. Just as pure humans, the various breeds exhibit competitive behaviors complicated with desire, romantic attractions, obligations and trickery can change in an instant when the animal nature is allowed to take over or slips out with loss of control. This ability to switch from human to reptile, bear, gorilla, or bird is filled with imaginative turns of events the author exploits to entertain the reader.
Colet has done a fabulous job of creating an action packed experience. Siren, the main character is only 17, but has been raised with a sense of responsibility and courage to face serious challenges. It’s only in the YA category because of the reserve the author takes, but young people are going to be tantalized by the promise of love and physical attractions, value of friendships and learn from the good versus evil themes she represents.
Thanks to the publisher for providing an eARC of Breed in exchange for an honest review.
Centuries in the future, after humanity has had to evolve to use the DNA of various different species, portagonist Siren is now one of the only Cetacean-humans remaining after her ancestors fled earth when the rest of the hybrids tried to kill off her kind. After crashlanding in the heart of enemy territory, Siren has to try and hide her true identity if she wants any chance of getting home. Or even surviving, for that matter.
Breed is a really good YA dystopia! The world is unique and you get a feel for the shifts in culture and why they occurred pretty quickly. Our protagonist is a tad generic for the genre, but she serves more as a machine for us to view the story through so it didn't really bother me. My only major issues come down to pacing. Near the end of the novel, you realize the story only spans 12 days and I honestly don't get the reasoning behind it. Nothing about Siren or her situation necessitates such a small time frame and it really hurts her character development with others in this, especially her love interest. So many of her positive relationships start out rocky and if you're trying to move from that to some form of strong bond, you need a lot more than 12 days to make it seem more believable. This book goes through character and relationship arcs that normally span weeks and it at times makes the characters appear unrealistic or juvenile and at others makes them seem really unlikable when they move through what should be serious grieving periods in a day or less.
Overall, this was good, but I really don't understand the pacing or timeline.
As a die-hard romantic who cares about the fate of animals, nature, and the planet as a whole- this book is everything! It's well thought out and the future world the author created is, unfortunately, not hard to imagine given the way humans are treating the planet today. I could not put this down and cannot wait for the next book in the series.

This book was so different from anything I have read in such a long time in the best way possible. I was a little confused at the beginning because there was so much to absorb. But once I caught on and got deeper into the story, it just kept getting better and better. The author does a fantastic job pulling and immersing us into this amazing, beautiful, different and often overly cruel fantasy world.
“Human beings are masters of the extinction game.”
Long ago when animals were near extinction, hybrid beings were born. They formed four Kingdoms. Kingdom A, B, R and OM. But once upon a time there were five. The fifth Kingdom, Cetacean, was destroyed by those who feared their power. Somehow a few of the Cetacean survived the genocide and over two hundred years later seventeen year old Siren has been sent with a few others on a mission to return to the place her people once called home, Earth.
“Everything seemed to flash before me. Brief snippets of a story I would one day have to string together into a linear tale that would make sense to me.”
On the way to start her mission Siren’s pod crashes in Kingdom Om and she is saved by Aedan, leader of the OM. Brought back to his Kingdom to heal she is an outsider and not welcomed by many. She must always be sure to hide who she truly is for fear of death. Yet Aedan and Siren are drawn to each other. He promises her his protection while Siren knows she must do anything she can to escape and finish her mission if her Breed has any chance of survival.
“He was bound to someone. Promised. And he had given me my first kiss. My first experience with human contact.”
Tension is high in OM and there are so many secrets, betrayals, twists and turns tucked within every corner. Siren has her mission and Aedan must do whatever is necessary to protect his people from the Breed threatening to literally devour them. There is just so much going on in this book, but it somehow all works together to make an absolutely amazing story. I don’t want to say much more and give too much away. I loved Siren and Aedan and several of the secondary characters. I even grew to like a few people I thought I hated. While a few others quickly landed on my list of people that the reptiles can just have.
“In Aedan, I saw everything that was right with humanity. He was strong. He was kind. He was sensitive.”
If you’re a fan of fantasy, paranormal and dystopian please read this book. Everything about it was brilliant. Even with that huge cliffhanger we were left with. I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for the next book!
This YA story is original and refreshing, the world-building the author created was interesting and I found it very entertaining. It's a bit fast-paced and the characters are fantastic and original. A 17-year-old siren needs to save her species. Definitely a first for me from the author and won't be the last, I want to read to find out what comes next.
I am so glad that I decided to go outside my box and read this YA fantasy romance. Breed was just what I needed to throw me a little variety in my reading.
What I loved: I really enjoyed the overall plot of the story. I've always been a fan of dystopian type stories, and Breed brings a little fantasy twist to that. A lot is going on, and at the beginning, I thought maybe it was going to be too much, but it's not. I think everyone will be able to follow along easily.
The heroine was perfection. Siren has a quiet but BA attitude that I loved. She didn't just run off the mouth; instead observed her surroundings and bided her time.
The secondary characters made me so mad, but in the right way like villainous characters should. I wanted to strangle them and know more about them all at the same time.
What I did like I never know if this is a spoiler or not, but it ends on a cliffhanger. As I always say, it's not that I necessarily dislike cliffys; I like to be prepared for it going in. Since there are three other girls from the same place as Siren, I thought there would probably be one book for each girl, but not the case.
The one intimate scene is a fade to black, and I'm not a huge fan of those, but this is YA, so I let that pass.
Overall Am I going to read the next book? Hell yes! I must find out what happens next!
I honestly expected to struggle to get into this book, I always like the premise of books like this, but then am unable to get into the story. That was not the case with this book, Once I got through the "background" section in the beginning I was hooked. The story moves quickly, with intriguing characters leading the way. The world is well thought out, detailed and easy to immerse myself in.
The story is set several centuries into the future. Scientists came up with a way to save species of animals from extinction, by combining their soul particles with humans. This worked for a while, but now the humans are facing their own extinction. Divided into kingdoms based on their species, 4 kingdoms destroyed the 5th, the cetaceans, sending the few survivors fleeing for another planet. Many years later the last cetaceans are sent back to earth, to return to their home planet and try to figure out a way to save their species.
When I said it moved quickly, I was serious. I literally wrote down "That was fast." when Siren kisses Aedan within hours of meeting him. The story also only encompasses 12 days, which I feel takes away from the organic ness of the relationships that grow and change.
Breed was a highly entertaining YA sci-fi romance that held my interest. With excellent world building we are taken to a future world and introduced to intriguing characters you will both love and hate. This story was creative and well written and ends in a cliff hanger. I can't wait to see what's in store for us in the next book. I would recommend it to lovers of YA romance. The audiobook was narrated by Anna Lynne McCord. She did a great job with the narration and brought the story to life, giving each character their own personality and voice. It was a pleasure listening to her narrate this novel.
Siren, a remnant from an almost extinct Breed of Cetaceans, returns to Earth to fulfill her mission of being able to repopulate her kind. However, when her pod crashes off course, in a dangerous, hostile kingdom, she must not only hide her true self, but navigate the complex xenophobia she encounters, including a crazed scientist insistent on experimenting on her and a coup plot.
I really enjoyed this book. The worldbuilding is well done and the ideas unique in terms of the Soul Particle theory and its connection to ancient human teachings. The ending is a real cliffhanger and begs for the next book to be read. The characters are complex and their motivations real and meaningful. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
It’s been awhile since I’ve picked up a dystopian book and I am glad I picked this one up. So many twist and turns kept me glued to my kindle. The ending just left me speechless. I need to get my hands in book 2.

Fivre breeds and five kingdoms. That's what humanity is reduced to on Earth in year 2999. Each breed takes characteristics of the animal they descend from. Only the Cetacean were too intelligent, and the other breeds felt threatened. So they killed them all, or almost. Siren is one of the last of her kind and she is sent to Earth on a mission. No one can know who she really is, and certainly not young ruler Aedan of Kingdom OM...
I really liked the concept of the book. The sci-fi/dystopian world was really unique and well built. It was easily explained, light and pleasant to discover as we read. Siren is an interesting character, and even if her goals are not always obvious, she fights for what she believes in and I loved that about her. The book is very fast-paced, maybe a bit too much in my opinion. I would have liked to have more details about certain scenes, and for the relationships between the characters to have more time to grow. However, I really enjoyed the plot, which was action-packed and full of plot-twists that had me gasping. I couldn't put the book down! The characters were okay, but as I mentionned before, I would have liked to have more time to get to know them and connect, because the friendships and romance that bloomed felt a bit rushed and illogical because of that. The writing was easy to read, sometimes maybe a bit too simple, but pleasant nonetheless. The world is truly fascinating and I quite enjoyed the different plot lines that took place. I look forward to reading the next book in this series!
I recommend if you like dystopian worlds and fast-paced, plot-driven books!
As I read the story that these writings tell I can feel the deep emotions that run through the characters as each are introduced. I felt their fear when they feared, laughed when they laughed and cried when they cried. I found it difficult to put this book down because I was eager to follow the lives of the characters that this writer has brought to life for me. You need to read this book with your total freedom of mind, body and soul so that you can feel everything the writer wishes for you to experience. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I recommend you take the time to read the series and enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the first book and am sure to enjoy the rest in this series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Colet Abedi for reading Breed in exchange for a review.
'Human Beings are masters of the extinction game.'
With this opening sentence I was curious, I was hooked, I was awake till 1am reading.
This was the first book I have read from this author, and look forward to reading more in the future. Especially book 2 as Breed ended on a cliffhanger.
This book is way more interesting and enjoyable than the blurb describes.
The writing style had me having the same feels at the main character; Siren. I look forward to seeing the relationship between characters evolve in the continuing series and hope that karma gets the villains in the story.
This story draws you into it from the first sentence. It shows the discovery and aftermath of save a poisoned earth from human indifference. The story focuses on a girl trying to save her species and tribal bloodline. This Story is Epic. The girl falls in love with the leader of the tribe that genocide her own tribe in history. It shows the we should focus on what we have in common as humas and should value our gift of earth. This story has romance, betrayal and actions of war. You will NEVER be uninterested in this story as it will live inside, even after you put the book down. Grab this book for a read you will live and enjoy.UPDATE! - The e books that make this series were written in 2021, almost 5 years ago. This second book ends with a cliffhanger, unfinished storyline. I looked for author pages on Facebook and others but just found a couple personal pages that are not current. The series looks like it's going to stay incomplete due to the big time gap in publication. This author seems to have moved on, be aware of this before you buy!!
This book was incredibly creative and so much fun! I enjoyed listening to this book and learning about this author’s world. I am so incredibly excited to read the next book in the series. This fantasy dystopian futurist world was intriguing and slightly terrifying- in the best way of course. The book was a roller coaster or emotions. I highly recommend this if you enjoy YA fantasy/dystopian books with a side of romance 🥰
I got Breed off of Netgalley, and these opinions are my own. I’ve always been a big fan of Dystopian books so I was pretty excited to read Breed! Like with all Dystopian books it takes a little patience to understand the world that Colet Abedi created but once you get there this book is wonderful! I was intrigued by the combination of human and animal to create a new species! I enjoyed Siren’s journey and was very intrigued by Aedan! I’m really excited to see what comes next in Shadow!
OMG 😲, what an AWESOME story 😃. Totally unique with graphic situations, scary end of the world problems, insane scientific theories that will be the end if humanity doesn't stop itself 😕. But, a Fabulous storyline that will keep you turning pages dying to know what happens next 😊. Thanks so much Colet, it's been truly an honor to read this story and I can't wait for the next book 🤓.
Very strange having people who were half human and half animal. Why did they decide to mix them into animal characteristcs. Why would doing that save the creatures both animal and human? Interesting. Didn't like that the story was in two parts that wasn't reveled before I started reading it. I'm too quick to pick up a new bok. I liked the characters and the romance. The end is disappointing
Breed by Cole Abedi follows Siren as she travels to Earth to save the mast of her breed. The young adult dystopia book is unique in its plot line and easy to read in one sitting. The book ends on a cliffhanger, much like the end of a TV series, which is not my preferred ending but I will be looking forward to reading book 2.
This was actually quite an enjoyable read. It had an interesting concept and characters. Although, the insta-love was not for me. It explored some topical issues like climate change, extinction, and gender. The thing that is stopping me from giving it 4 stars is the grammatical and punctuation errors.
This book was so like the Hunger Games. Except the books about shifters It about 4 different types. Loved the book. Can’t wait for book 2. You just got to read this book.
