This retelling of Sleeping Beauty has many clever twists so that it feels like a brand new story altogether.
The namesake princess of this character has more agency compared to the traditional archetype, and there is an interesting plot twist concerning the identity of the dark fairy that started the curse of enchanted sleep. This time it is not a spindle, but a thistle flower that the princess pricks her finger on. Also, the roles of the king and queen get reinvented roles. An unexpected tale of sisterhood and redemption.
The story actually calls out the royal parents for keeping their daughter in the dark and not warning her about the danger they were expecting. That part of the story always bothered me. Most of us would agree that if our parents were expecting danger for their child they would give a full disclosure when the child was old enough to hear the story. Their decision not to tell the child only insured that the foretold incident would happen anyway.
