Dollycas’s Thoughts

Spring has sprung in the Cotswolds, and it’s time for the annual May Day celebration. Everyone gathers together to get the village green set up for all the events.

May Day arrives, but there is something wrong with the maypole. The ribbons are loose, and an arm is visible as part of a bulge at the bottom of the pole. The holiday has taken a definite turn. It takes some fast organization to move as much of the festival as possible to Akemans, as the green is now a crime scene. Dotty, Keya, Sujin, Inspector Lynn Lockwood, and others start untangling the evidence and twisting together clues to try to solve the case and also find an elderly woman who has gone missing.

Opening books written by Victoria Tait are like checking in with old friends. Dotty and Keya are my favorites. Both have grown so much, and we don’t hear Keya exclaim “toda” as many times as we used to. They have wonderful men in their lives and are surrounded by a fantastic group of friends who are more like family. They all pull together to help wherever needed and are working hard to keep Akemans evolving with the times, the cafe profitable, and the community vital. Dotty and Zach are house hunting, Aunt Beanie has been convinced to sell her farm, and Keya and Sujin are settling into married life. I expected more of a fuss about Keya and Sujin getting married in Sri Lanka, but they are so happy, and that’s what counts.

The victim was a real scoundrel, making for a long list of suspects. He took advantage of vulnerable people and finally got his comeuppance. The method of murder was unique, but the motive comes from an issue that happens worldwide. It brought Sergeant Nathaniel Griggs to the area, who knew the pattern and the scope of what was happening, but it still wasn’t easy to pin down the killer. I always have a great time, following the clues along with these characters. The different viewpoints can make things very interesting.

A well-plotted, well-written, fast-paced, cozy mystery, with captivating characters, set in a charming locale, A Maypole of Deceit, is another Perfect Escape from Victoria Tait. I knew what was coming on the final page, and I am very excited about what’s ahead for everyone. The teaser tells us the next book will be about Christmas in the Cotswolds, and I can’t wait!

Victoria Tait is one of my Must Read authors and i jumped at the chance to read this latest entry in the Cotswold Antique Mystery series. Everyone is pitching in and preparing for the May Day festival when a body is discovered tied to the Maypole. Rather than cancel the festivities, Zach and Dotty arrange for the Antique Center to improvises a new setting while Keya and Sujin begin the forensics work onsite. But the murder isn't the only mystery. a senior citizen is missing and her house has been put up for sale. There also seems to be a series of missing items at the Waterwheel Cafe. On a personal note, both couples who have been house hunting are still searching, and Keya and Sujn have settled into married life. Tait ties everything together neatly in this character driven cozy mystery. Weather you have been a fan since the original Dotty Sayers mysteries or you have only recently started with one of the new spinoffs, this Springtime story will make a perfect cozy read.

It was fine, but overall a pretty typical English village cozy, with nothing in particular that made it stand out. I read it solely for the May Day setting because I like stories that take place on this not-so-mainstream holiday.

One problem I had was that it was very clearly a book that was midway through its series, and I kept feeling slightly overwhelmed by all the names of people I was expected to be familiar with. I stopped even trying to tell them apart, and when a name came up that I didn't remember, I just mentally shrugged and kept going.

I also wondered why everyone was so wealthy. Does the auction biz pay megabucks, or was there some backstory where they all won some kind of megalottery? I mean, they're all casually buying multi-acre properties with orchards and stables and things in a touristy area like the Cotswolds. Rich people being rich and acting like it's normal.

Aa far as the mystery went, I did guess the culprit fairly early on, as well as the person involved in a secondary, unrelated crime. (The only surprise there was how long it took the main characters to catch on.)

One thing that I found slightly odd was some of the names, since they made the characters seem a few decades older. A person named Dotty, who's still in their childbearing years? I'm not aware of too many Dorothys under 80, and if any of them ever answered to Dotty, they probably gave up that nickname by 1965. And how old was Mabel supposed to have been, anyway? That name peaked in the Victorian/Edwardian era and went on the decline in the 1920s. Is Mabel a centenarian? I'll probably never find out since I don't feel inspired to continue the series. (Unless the next one has, like, a Lunar New Year theme or something, in which case it's a definite maybe.).

A Maypole of Deceit by Victoria Tait Book Review

“ The sky was already clearing, and faint shafts of sunlight fell across a scattering of yellow flowers.” The Cotswolds seems like a beautiful place to be. I can picture myself there from this description.

“The antiques center consisted of numerous stalls and booths, mostly arranged in rows, throughout the extensive open - plan space.” It's amazing to see what they have built and to see how far the characters have come, together. Romance adds layers to the story.

A missing woman.

I hope Keya is ok. I wonder what is going on with her?

I loved learning about May day celebrations and their origins.

Who is Nyx and what is her story?

Who is the grey haired man?

“An arm was visible, pressed against the ribbons at an awkward angle.” A body is found on the Maypole! It's so sudden.

Shout out to Earl Grey the cat. It just made me laugh how perfectly Victoria managed to catch the temperament of most cats in so few sentences. “Before jumping free and stalking out of the room” so relatable to cat owners.

Fraud. There was more going on than meets the eye. No one can be trusted. This is an important topic to talk about as the impact it has on people is so significant. Victoria does a great job at highlighting this.

I love the community feel of this book, of how people come together to make things happen.

“But you don’t have anything to worry about, unless you killed the man.” Victoria has a way with words and will have you questioning everyone. I had no idea who the killer was.

Someone is stealing items, but who?

Clues and Evidence leading up right to the end. An unexpected ending.

A surprise at the end.

Oh how I love this series! Maypole of Deceit is a must-read for cozy mystery lovers! It’s the latest book in the Cotswold Antique Mystery series. It features much loved characters from two of Victoria Tait’s other series, but even if this is the first book you read in the series, you’ll be fine! It works very well as a standalone. If you have read them, you’ll know Dotty and Keya as well as the other characters in the cozy Cotswolds.

In this book, the village is getting ready to celebrate May Day! It’s a joyous welcome of spring and the village is all set up with stalls for games, treats and of course, the Maypole. But when a body is found wrapped up in the ribbons the morning of the event, plans are thrown into chaos to say the least! It’s now a crime scene, so the coordinators, including Keya, Gilly, and Gilly’s husband Dr Peter. It’s decided that they can move the celebration to the area between Keya’s cafe and Akemans.

I just loved this so much! Reading Victoria Tait’s books always feels like a warm hug. She knows how to write a murder mystery that still has a cozy feel to the story. In this case, the murder is an unknown man, though it’s eventually revealed that several people knew him. With several suspects, it’s not so easy to figure out which one did it! I loved gathering the clues with the characters. The characters are well-written and have become like family to me. They’re also like found family to each other. I’m so happy with the way things are going in this series. There’s a very happy surprise in this one that fans will love!

I highly recommend A Maypole of Deceit for its wonderful characters, charming setting, well-plotted mystery, and cozy feeling. 5 stars!

Spring in Coln Akeman sees changes in the charming Cotswolds village. Zach and Dotty are house hunting, as are Aunt Beanie and Norman. Keya and Sujin are back to work after their wedding. The auction house and cafe are doing brisk business, but everyone comes together to put together the Mayday Celebration. When a body is found tied to the Maypole, the crew has a puzzle on their hands. The victim, an unscrupulous solicitor, has left a trail of financial ruin and missing persons in his wake. The suspect list is extensive including deceived patients and their families, a police officer trying to get justice, and the Cotswold Shed Inspectors. Can Keya and Dotty unravel this tangled case?

With an unusual method of murder and a deeply human motive, Victoria Tait delivers another engaging character driven mystery. As in real life, the victims included more than the murdered man. Longtime readers of both Dotty and Keya’s original series will enjoy the continual growth of these characters and their friends and the grounded evolution of their lives. One of my theories from previous books was confirmed this time, and I’m excited about seeing the changes as Dotty & Zach move to their new home, and Keya & Sujin adjust to married life and other developments. I loved how Norman and his friends were helping around the auction house, as well as their efforts to find the missing Mabel and protect her house and belongings.

I picked up A Maypole of Deceit: A British Cozy Murder Mystery because I love British cozy mysteries, and the title sounded like exactly the kind of charming mystery I enjoy. This ended up being a really entertaining read with a great mix of cozy atmosphere and suspense.

I loved the village setting and the traditional British mystery feel throughout the story. The maypole festival backdrop added a unique touch and made the whole atmosphere feel even more immersive. It had that cozy small-town charm while still keeping the mystery interesting and full of tension underneath.

The characters were enjoyable to follow, and I liked how the story slowly revealed secrets and hidden motives as it went along. The pacing worked well for me, and I appreciated that the mystery kept me guessing without becoming overly complicated. There were enough twists to keep things engaging right up to the end.

I also enjoyed the interactions between the townspeople because they made the setting feel lively and believable. It gave the story an extra layer of charm that I always look for in a cozy mystery.

Overall, I really enjoyed A Maypole of Deceit. It’s a cozy and engaging British mystery with a charming setting, interesting characters, and a solid whodunit. If you enjoy village mysteries with a classic cozy feel, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Another cozy mystery featuring some of my favourite detectives - Dotty, Keya, Sujin and the Cotswold Shed Inspectors. Being on the planning group for the upcoming May Day, Keya thought the worst was over when they found a new May Pole to replace the one from last year that wasn’t stored properly and volunteers to run all the activities. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be. In the early morning when checking that everything is ready they find a body of a stranger tied to the pole with the ribbons. Keya and Sujin work for the police, so they are soon involved. Dotty gets involved with finding a new venue since obviously the original one is now a crime scene.
They soon discover that the victim was Martin Hale, he worked for a company in a neighbouring city and would find people that needed help and would get them to sign Lasting Power of Attorney over to him. Then he would empty their places and sell their possessions off in auctions and then sell their houses. He would keep most of the profits for himself. Needless to say, there are several possible suspects. I was surprised by the actual perpetrator but it was a logical conclusion.
A quick read and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened.

Spring Murder.
Dottie and Zach are busy running Akeman's Auctions and Keya is back from her honeymoon and running her cafe and doing crime scene managing. It's time for the Mayday celebration kicking off the nicer weather and looking forward to summer. When sleazy lawyer Martin Hale ends up tied to the Maypole and dead it puts a damper on the celebrations. When it becomes apparent that his death was murder, and almost everyone who has met him wished him ill, the suspect list is very long. Another fine mystery for these characters. We have had the chance to see their lifes evolve and the fullness of their development makes this series a joy to read. Their crime solving harkens back to the golden age of mysteries where common sense and thorough investigation solved the crime, not fancy technical advancements. A joy to read and I look forward to many more adventures from Dottie and crew.

“A Maypole of Deceit,” the fifth book in the Cotswolds Antique Mystery series, is more than just a cozy murder mystery. While it delivers the charm and intrigue expected of the genre, it also tackles the serious issue of fraud and theft within lasting power of attorney laws. I have to say, the victim got exactly what he deserved.
In this installment, Dottie and Keya team up not only to solve a murder but also to track down and help the many victims of the deceased. Victoria Tait skillfully evokes the essence of English life, where friendship remains at the heart of even the darkest events. Alongside the main plot, engaging subplots, including a thief in the café and Dottie and Zach’s house-hunting, add depth and warmth.
Tait’s writing always feels fresh and keeps readers guessing with plenty of twists and turns. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series.

Books in this series are always fast paced and fun, and I have a hard time putting them down. The plot (elder and disabled fraud) was really interesting, and something I worry about myself, as I am a lot closer to elderly than I like to admit. The victim got exactly what he deserved, but I was really sorry for the killer, as they had already been through too much.
Looking forward to the next book to see if Norman can actually manage to drag Aunt Beanie out of the house so Dotty and Zach can get moved in! And it will be interesting to see how Keya and Sujin manage parenthood with their already crowded lives!

Mayday is coming to the Cotswolds and everyone is excited. Until...the Maypole is discovered to have a dead body attached to it! A man is found dead wrapped in the ribbons from the Maypole and Keya and Dotty are on the hunt to find out what happened. Turns out that there's no love lost over Martin Hale as he is definitely not a good man and the list of suspects is quite long.
Meanwhile, Aunt Beanie and Norman are still looking for a place to move to, as are Dotty and Zach. Will things work out for everyone in the house hunting department? Will anyone be able to figure out who killed Martin Hale? Read the book for the answers. This one doesn't disappoint and I definitely recommend it.

Life in an English village is described with close knit neighbors and friends. This brings memories of the village I grew up in. The book has several mysteries. Elderly residents go missing and their possessions are taken and someone is murdered.

The planning committee prepares for celebrating May Day. Games, rides, food, selling booths, and other activities will be available. Sounds like lots of fun doesn’t it.
While inspecting the maypole for May Day Gilly, Dr. Peter’s wife, finds a body. The man is wrapped in ribbons around the maypole.

Dottie eavesdrops on a conversation between Zeus, Dr. Peter, and Detective Lynn discussing the murdered victim. Dottie helps Zeya, Sujin (her husband), and Detective Lynn search for motives and clues to identify the killer.

'A Maypole of Deceit, the fifth book in Victoria Tait's Cotswold Antique Mystery series, is a feel-good whodunnit brimming with village life, antique discoveries, and a slow-burn romance. With determined sleuths, loyal friendships, and a community worth fighting for, it's a wonderfully British cozy mystery with genuine heart.'

The characters were very appealing and likeable and quirky and mysterious. Plot was intriguing and exciting and well paced. World building was solidly drawn and impressive. All in all a great addition to the series. Enjoyed immensely and highly recommend.

Deceit and death

It’s rather difficult to feel sympathy for the victim once you find out they run a scheme to take advantage of the elderly and infirm. Although I do have to say that the cause of death is absolutely unique even if it does put a damper on a lot of hard work. There’s also lots of life changes happening moving, expanding and changing the business at Akemans, family things that I won’t say cause it’s too spoilery but yay! I love that the world has expanded a bit and while it’s still based in a small town in the Cotswolds we get more due to the changing roles of the main characters Dotty and Keya. I liked the pacing and how the tension builds to the big reveal and then brings us back to happier times. A very enjoyable story!

Two criminal acts, one great story - Dotty, Keya and the gang are plagued by a series of petty thefts and a murder. The cafe is the site of the thefts, customers and employees having items come up missing. A trap set uncovers the miscreant, the culprit out for attention. The murder at the maypole is much more complex to solve, but our crime-solvers rise to the task. A pub full of suspects, some connected to the victim and a host of outsiders who could happily take their revenge on the "victim". Another great cozy read from the brilliant mind of Ms. Tait. I love my visits to the Cotswolds and look forward to many more.

Thanks to the author for giving me an ARC.
As someone who has read all of these books, I've come to think of the characters as friends and family. It's such fun reading about what is happening next in their lives.
This book is no exception.
We have Keya, just back from her honeymoon, Aunt Beanie looking for another place to live, along with Dotty and her desire to find a home to perhaps settle down and start a family.
I won't include any spoilers in this review, however I had guessed it right away.
I also had the murderer figured out early, but not the actual reason behind it.
Good read, as usual.

A Maypole of Deceit is like taking a spring trip to the Cotswold, but while you are enjoying the wonderful day there a murder is discovered. Book 5 of A Cotswold Antique Mystery by Victoria Tait is just as marvelous as the previous books with cleverly placed details of the characters involved and the crime that has taken placed. Keya, Dottie and Zach are there along with others from the series, so it may have a lot of minor characters for someone new to the series. Still it is a Mayday celebration so many would be there. As for me I found it an entertaining cozy mystery addition where I could sit back and enjoy reading of my book friends solving a murder investigation.

Another 5 Star Cotswold Winner

Jan not Rick (shared account). This was another 5 star winner for readers old and new who enjoy Dotty and Keya, their friends and family of the heart at the Antique Center, the Police Station, the cafe, etc. The murder mystery is interesting and I guessed the reason for Keya’s being tired right on …. the details associated with the murder were interesting as was the information about May Day traditions.
Looking forward to the next outing - just sorry it’s so many months until Christmas!

Cozy mystery!

Another easy-to-read story with a fascinating plot.  Keya and Sujin, along with Dotty and Aunt Beanie, are persistent, determined investigators in another unusual murder investigation. I love reading a book like this that is a stand-alone book, but at the same time, the main characters are the same so you follow them through their lives.

I was really hoping Mayday wasn't going to be spoilt by another case, but it was however fast thinking meant a lot of the celebrations were still able to be had while Dotty and the others worked through who the killer is.
I had an idea of who it was, but was really hoping it wasn't and enjoyed how I would flip flop between them and others and having a sub story happening at the cafe was fun too.

Antique expert Dotty Sayers is back along with the other players namely Keya her friend on who she can depend and does who enrich this great murder mystery series set in the Cotswolds. A figure found hanging from the Maypole on the village green. Friendships are tested and clues investigated as per. You can’t go wrong with this pair. Victoria Tait ,this is mighty indeed . It’s a truly great read justice done but what a thing to disturb the villagers fun.

A good and interesting story set in a lovely village with lots of recurring characters along with some new ones. The story is engaging as it unfolds and a body is found nearly ruining the celebrations. The recurring character story lines continue to develop which makes them feel like friends. And although I did guess the perpetrator I quite enjoyed it.

Victoria Tait is certainly creative when it comes to the cause of death. Death by maypole is certainly unusual, and as Keya, Dotty, and the gang search for clues as to who could have accomplished such a crazy murder, it is clear that the victim had a lot of enemies. There is an underlying story of financial abuse that is equally interesting. This can be enjoyed as a standalone.
