Last night I was grieving. Today I am a headline.

When my husband’s body washed up on a remote riverbank, the media swarmed. They called it an accident. Then a scandal. Then they called me a suspect. So I disappeared.

New state. New life. New tenant.

Jake is everything Matthew wasn’t—kind, protective, and dangerously magnetic. Our connection ignites fast, blurring every line I swore I’d never cross. Until strange things start happening… Matthew’s cufflink appears on my kitchen counter. The wedding photo I destroyed shows up on my nightstand. Someone is watching me.

And now a woman is missing—a woman asking questions about Matthew. As the past claws its way back, I’m forced to confront the

Who, exactly, is the man sleeping in my bed?

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the advanced eBook copy. The Stranger in My Bed is set to be released on March 6, 2026.

This fast-paced psychological thriller kept me on my toes from start to finish. The short chapters make it incredibly easy to binge, and I was guessing until the very end—I loved every second.

The story follows Olivia after the mysterious death of her husband, Matthew. This isn’t an ordinary couple; they’re wealthy and powerful, so his death becomes national news. When the media begins tearing Olivia’s reputation apart, she flees to another state in search of a fresh start. But just as she begins to settle into a new life—and a new relationship—unsettling things start to happen. Matthew’s belongings and even their wedding photos begin to reappear. Someone knows Olivia’s past and is deliberately playing with her.

Who is her new boyfriend, and how much does he really know?

The Stranger in My Bed is an intense and emotional roller‑coaster, the kind of story that pulls you in quickly and keeps you curious about where it’s heading. Olivia’s journey, trying to escape the shadows of her past while attempting to build something new, sets up a strong emotional core. I appreciated how the narration shifted between perspectives, giving the story more texture and helping me understand the characters’ motivations. The premise itself had a lot of promise, and the early chapters built a solid foundation.

That said, I have to admit I was let down by the twist. It felt predictable, and I kept hoping the story would take a more surprising direction. By the time the reveal came, I already had a good idea of what was going to happen, which took away some of the tension I was expecting from a thriller.

Likes:
• Alternating narrative that adds depth
• Fresh‑start trope done in a relatable way
• Beach‑side setting that creates a nice contrast to the darker themes

Dislikes:
• A plot twist that’s been used too many times
• Events that unfold in a very unsurprising way
• Characters who feel a bit too predictable

Ratings Breakdown:
• Setting: 4⭐️
• Characters: 3⭐️
• Writing: 2⭐️
• Message: 3⭐️
• Overall: 3⭐️

Overall, it’s a decent read especially for thriller lovers who enjoy fast‑paced stories and don’t mind familiar twists. Even though it didn’t fully work for me, I can still see it appealing to readers who want something quick, emotional, and easy to get through.

First I would like to thank NetGalley and Storm Publishing for allowing me to read this Arc.

First off I loved this book i do think more “thrill” could’ve been in the book. For what it was i loved it. In my opinion I did not see the twist and turns like
I thought I would. The book has three different POV’s which I love because it makes the book read faster.

Now to the good stuff, the book follows Olivia and Rachel. Olivia is married to Matthew or so you think because Rachel is also dating Matthew. Until Matthew ends up missing and dead. Olivia moves to a different place to start her new life after Matthew passes but after a while, she finds a new tenant to live with her. She secretly starts to fall in love with them. Rachel starts to suspect something and so does Olivia about Mathew’s passing.
Is Matthew really dead or did he fake his own death?
Is Matthew even Matthew?
Read to find out.

This was such a fast paced thriller and it had me flying through the pages. Even when I started to guess where things might be going, I still couldn’t stop reading because I had to see how everything played out. I was constantly questioning who to trust… and honestly, I am still not totally sure I trust anyone.

The whole idea of starting over after loss, only for the past to creep back in, kept me hooked. The unsettling moments built slowly and made me second guess every character, right up to the end. I closed the book still thinking about what was real, what wasn’t, and who I ever should have trusted in the first place.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm publishers for the e-ARC. These thoughts are my own.

Amanda McKinney is one of those authors I automatically trust when I’m in the mood for a fast, twisty psychological thriller, and The Stranger in My Bed is another solid reminder why she’s on my favorites list. This one starts with a woman trying to outrun her past after her husband’s mysterious death, only to find herself tangled in a new life that feels almost too perfect. New town, new man, fresh start, until things start getting creepy in that quiet, unsettling way McKinney does so well. The tension builds gradually, and I loved how the story plays with paranoia, identity, and the idea that you can never fully escape who you were.

I honestly have yet to read an Amanda McKinney psychological thriller that hasn’t been a four star read or higher for me. Every story she fabricates is compelling and completely bingeable, the kind of book you say you’ll read “just one more chapter” of and suddenly it’s midnight.

The pacing was strong and steady, the premise was instantly intriguing, and the atmosphere was deliciously uneasy. I really enjoyed the main character’s internal conflict and how the story constantly made me question who to trust. McKinney is great at planting little seeds of doubt that slowly grow into full blown suspicion.

One of the twists I predicted, and those who read a lot of thrillers may find it slightly predictable as well. On top of that, I also wished the ending had one extra layer of shock, it was satisfying, just not as jaw dropping as some of her other books.

Overall, this was another engaging, addictive read from an author who consistently delivers for me. If you like domestic suspense with secrets, unreliable relationships, and that creeping sense of something is very wrong, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Thank you to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for another immersive and thrilling ARC in return for my honest opinion.

The Stranger in My Bed pulls you in from the very first line and never really loosens its grip. It opens with a woman shattered by her husband’s mysterious death—an event that quickly spirals from tragedy to media circus to something far more sinister. Branded a suspect and unable to breathe under the glare of public judgment, she does the only thing that makes sense: she disappears and starts over.

The setup alone is gripping, but the real hook is what comes next. In her new life, she meets Jake—gentle, attentive, almost too good to be true. Their chemistry is instant and intense, and it’s written in a way that feels both believable and unsettling. You want to trust him… but you can’t quite shake the prickling on the back of your neck.

And then the strangeness begins.

A missing cufflink. A destroyed photo suddenly reappearing. The unmistakable feeling of being watched. These moments are woven in with just the right touch—subtle enough to make you doubt reality along with the narrator, but chilling enough to confirm that something is very, very wrong.

The tension builds steadily, and when a woman investigating Matthew turns up missing, the story shifts into high‑gear. The question at the centre—Who exactly is the man sleeping in my bed?—becomes a ticking time bomb.

This is a fast, twisty, highly bingeable thriller with the perfect mix of emotional stakes and ominous atmosphere. Fans of Shari Lapena, Lisa Jewell, and Gone Girl will feel right at home in its pages.

A sharp, engrossing read that kept me flipping pages late into the night.

“We don’t need new beginnings. We just needed the courage to return to what remained. And grow something new.”

This was a nonstop, heart-racing thriller with immersive storytelling through highlighting the trauma of psychological and physical abuse. Olivia knew it was her husband’s body that they had found before seeing it. In one night, she went from the envied trophy wife of a jet-setting mogul to a widow carrying secrets that would continue to haunt her.

Finding a new beginning in an obscure seaside town felt like her only option. For a year, Olivia got a sense of normal life with her plants as her only companion, and she wouldn’t have had it any other way. That was until her quiet, handsome new tenant moved in, bringing with him the shadows of her past. No matter how kind, attentive, and loving he seemed, Olivia couldn’t ignore the fact that her new life didn’t start unraveling until Jake showed up.

This was a gripping, chilling, and emotional page-turner. The chapters were short and designed to either break your heart or stress you out. Olivia’s PTSD recovery and trauma healing were difficult to read at times but crucial, calling attention to psychological and physical abuse. The spice is fade-to-black and subtle, focusing on emotional aspects rather than the physical.

Thank you so much Amanda McKinney, Storm Publishing, NetGalley for this advanced reader copy!

The Stranger in My Bed is a gripping psychological thriller that thrives on uncertainty, tension, and carefully executed twists.

From the opening chapters, the story immediately pulls you into a state of unease — the kind where you’re constantly questioning the narrative, the characters, and even your own understanding of what’s unfolding. I found myself rereading certain sections, not because the writing was unclear, but because the author does such an effective job of making you doubt what’s real.

The pacing is excellent. The stakes are introduced early and continue to build steadily, with no slow sections or filler. Each chapter adds another layer, pushing the story toward a climax that feels both surprising and well-earned.

Character development is another strength. As the plot progresses, your perception of the characters shifts in meaningful ways. By the end, motivations are clearer, and earlier moments take on new significance. Side characters are purposeful and contribute directly to the story rather than feeling disposable.

The writing style is accessible and easy to read, making this a fast, immersive experience — I finished it in less than a day. While the conclusion was satisfying and well-paced, I did find myself wishing for slightly more exploration of certain elements at the very end (without giving anything away).

This was my first novel by Amanda McKinney, and it left a strong impression. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy Lisa Jewell, Shari Lapena, and Freida McFadden, or anyone who loves a twist-heavy psychological thriller that keeps you guessing until the final pages.

Olivia’s wealthy husband, Matthew, has just been found dead, washed up by the river. It turns out Matthew was keeping some serious secrets from her. After she’s cleared of any wrongdoing, she moves across the country to start over. Then she decides to advertise for a renter for the little cottage on her property, and she meets Jake. Because he’s the opposite of Matthew, she falls hard. Then, of course, strange things start happening at exactly the same time. And then it all just gets ridiculous when it incorporates perhaps the most cliché trope ever.

We get two narratives throughout the story – one is Olivia’s, and the other doesn’t seem to make any sense until much later. That’s where the trope comes in, and I was seriously disappointed. I mean, really? I guess it at least takes a new spin on it? That twist aside, it’s generally an engaging and fun suspense story that packs in a lot of action at the end. There’s a little more romance than was needed, and it wasn’t quite the thriller that was promised. I mean, I guess you’re supposed to suspect Jake and wonder if he’s too good to be true, but because of the other narrative, you know there’s something else going on unrelated to him. I love this author, but this one just didn’t do it for me.

My thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the free advanced reading copy of this book.

The Stranger in my Bed by Amanda McKinney is a fast paced psychological thriller that had me hooked from the beginning. This is my first read by this author and I really enjoyed every heart-pounding twisty moment of it. The gripping edge of your seat drama haunted me long after finishing.

Olivia is living the high life and enjoying all the benefits that accompany such a lifestyle. All that changes when her husband Matthew is found dead and the death is ruled a suicide. When claims of some nefarious business dealings with Matthew's company come to light, the fingers start pointing to Olivia, naming her as his accomplice. When she is cleared by the law, she high tails it out of there and reinvents her self hundreds of miles away. However the past refuses to stay the past and Olivia finds herself in the fight of her life to survive.

I loved how action packed this story was. The chapters were short making it a quick paced read. The characters were real and believable. If you love a fast-paced psychological suspense drama this is definitely for you.

Always love Amanda McKinney's thrillers!

When Olivia's husband is found dead, she is subject to a media circus. Deciding she needs to escape, she starts a new life under a new name, far away from her old life. Olivia's new life is going well, until strange things start happening. Her wedding photo suddenly appears on her nightstand. Her husband's cufflinks resurface. All of these strange occurrences suddenly begin when Olivia has a new tenant, Jake, move in. Olivia is convinced that someone is watching her. And when a woman disappears, who was asking about Olivia's former husband, Olivia wonders if Jake has something to do with the disappearance. Olivia has no idea who she can trust.

This was a fast paced thriller that kept me guessing until the end. I had no idea who I could trust. Things really heat about toward the final third of the book. As always, I loved Amanda's writing style. Keeps the reader super engaged and isn't full of unnecessary filler. Definitely recommend!

Olivia Grayson has her world torn apart when her husband dies. Now the media is hounding her as he died in the middle of a scandal and has stolen millions from clients. She claims she had no idea what he was doing but the media casts her as the villain.

Rachel turns on the television and sees that her boyfriend Matt has died. She was going to build a life with him and now he is gone. She starts to dig into her boyfriends life as she fears she didn't really know him. This part was so trippy trying to figure out how it all connects and the author did a brilliant job of leading down a rabbit hole.

Olivia changes her name and moves to a secluded area in Washington state to start her life over with a clean slate. Then she has a tenant move into the guest house and strange things start happening. Somehow her past has caught up to her.

I enjoyed the short chapters, the twists, the romance and second chances all rolled into a thriller. This was a binge read.

Olivia’s life took drastic turns she could have never imagined. From wife, to widow, to running from the media and predators!

Now living in a remote part of the PNW Olivia is slowly putting her life back together. No one knows her here, and that’s just how she likes it.

But after a new renter moves into the small cabin on her property, Olivia’s life is about to take yet another wild turn. Who is this man? Can she trust him?
And is it merely a coincidence that items from her past are suddenly showing up? I don’t believe in coincidences…do you?💁🏻‍♀️

This was a fun thriller that’s easily devoured in a weekend. Short chapters kept everything moving along at a quick pace.

Did I want a few more twists? Yes, of course. You can never have too many…until you do!😂

When I see a new thriller from Amanda McKinney, it’s an automatic read for me! They never disappoint!

📚My Book Review:

The Stranger In My Bed by Amanda McKinney is a psychological thriller about a woman whose husband’s body washes up on a remote riverbank. It’s called an accident. Then a scandal. Then they called her a suspect.

“Last night I was grieving. Today I am a headline.”

I was hooked immediately with the first chapter. The book is fast paced and it was a quick read. I enjoyed the multiple point of views, told in the present and past. I did actually guess correctly where the story was leading but it didn’t ruin the book for me. It was just a little predictable. There are a few twists and turns and suspense along the way. I rate this book 4 stars!! If you like psychological thrillers with suspense and a little romance, this is the book for you!

Received as an ARC through Netgalley, this is an honest review.

Thank you to Storm Publishing for the pre- approval to read this book.

Everything changes in Olivia's life the moment her husband Matthew took his own life; leaving to not only handle what comes after such an tragic events but the fact an ALL consuming scandal involving her husband's career was going to shatter the luxury lifestyle Olivia was able to relish in.

That high-profile world came with a steep cost... and once the dust settled from that nightmare; Olivia believed she could have the life she wanted hidden away in small town and with a man whom could truly loved that her dead husband could never achieve.

When pieces of her wealthy past surface, Olivia thrown back into survival mode as the tradegy that both destroyed and freed is far more terrifying than she could have believed.

And could cost Olivia everything of the precious life she'd managed to cultivated if it cannot be stopped.

Highly recommended.

After a bit of a dry spell with some "meh" books, I started this one and read it quickly. It keeps the reader fully engaged, and there are a few twists. I liked it!

When Olivia's husband Matthew washes up dead, she is relieved. The super-wealthy couple had some secrets, and with him gone, life should be easier for Olivia. At the same time, wife and mother Rachel is distraught when she learns her boyfriend died. In an unhappy marriage, she's going to leave her husband for Matt, the sweet guy she met and fell in love with.

Surely, her Matt and the dead guy can't be the same person? Rachel sets out to learn the truth and confront Olivia.

This is all you need to know going into the book. It ramps up during the last 1/3 of the book, and I liked how the author played this out. It's a quickly moving suspense, and you can read it in a day or two.

Olivia fears the worst when a body is found in a nearby river. She identifies the body as her husband, Matthew. When scandal swirls regarding his business, and whether or not Olivia knew or was involved, she disappears to the opposite coast and lives a very private life. When she and her tenant, Jake, start to grow close, strange things begin to happen, including Matthew's belongings turning up in her house, and the disappearance of a woman who was asking questions about Matthew.

I've read other titles by this author and enjoyed them all. The suspense builds on every page and kept me engaged into the wee hours. Though the ending was somewhat predictable, it was still satisfying with some unexpected twists in the various relationships of the characters.

When Olivia’s husband Matthew is found dead of an apparent suicide, that’s just the beginning of the end of the life she knew. After the storm clears, she disappears to a new town under a new name and tries to move on.

Until Jake becomes her new tenant. But even as sparks fly, strange things start to happen. Like a cufflink unexpectedly shows up on her kitchen counter and suddenly there’s a copy of her wedding photo on the bedside table. It seems like someone is watching her, but who, and why?

How well can you trust the man in your bed?

I found this story captivating and fast paced. It’s told from a couple viewpoints and timelines throughout. I honestly had no idea who to even trust and it kept me guessing til the very end.

When Olivia's husband commits suicide, her life falls apart amid scandal, suspicions of complicity in fraud, and publicity blaming her for everything. She decides to disappear for a while. Lacking resources, she takes in a tenant in the annex. And in part, that will unleash chaos in her life.
Meanwhile, Rachel sees the news and knows perfectly well that something is not right. She takes it upon herself to uncover the truth. And that will put her in danger.
A novel with a flowing plot that intertwines moments of mystery, suspense and romance, all without losing momentum at any point, making it a tremendously addictive psychological thriller.

“A predator’s smile just behind his eyes, as if he is savoring every second of my unraveling.“

This was such an addictive read! I could not stop flipping the pages.
Cass’s life shatters when her husband’s body washes ashore and the media instantly turns her into a suspect. To escape everything, she disappears and tries to build a new life. She meets Jake who is mind and protective and she starts to believe in something again. But then weird, creepy, unsettling things start happening. A cuff link on her counter, a photograph she previously destroyed showing up and a woman who is asking questions about her dead husband.
The pacing in this kept me glued to the pages and has those twists that make you say “wait what!?”. This one will keep you hooked til the very end.

When reports of a man jumping from a bridge Olivia automatically suspects its her husband Matthew. And sadly when she's taken to the mortuary she identifies his body based on a scar and a birthmark.
Following claims of financial mismanagement she flees her previous life and lives simply by the coast. But on the arrival of a new housemate Jake, she starts to find items of Matthew's belongings. Can she trust Jake or is he messing with her head.
This was a great read, told from Olivia's perspective and also another character Rachel, short chapters keep you enthralled and wanting to read just a little bit more. A few twists throughout

This was such a great book!!!! I read in one day and couldn't put it down. Olivia's husband Matthew commits suicide after being investigated for embezzlement....or did he??? Olivia runs away from all the press and moves into a small house in a quiet, small town to hide. She decides to rent her quest house to Jake. But this is when everything changes for Olivia. Is Jake who he says he is? Is Matthew really dead, and if so, why does she start seeing him lurking around her house? There are so many thrills and so much suspense in this book. Absolutely loved it. If you're looking for a suspenseful ,twisty read, then the book is for you!!!

Probably not – that’s why it was so good! A very original story that totally kept my interest – one for your TBR list!

Wow! This book is fantastic! Matt's body is found in the water after he apparently jumped from the bridge in his suit. And then reporters begin storming widow Olivia's house and she is still mourning so not sure what to do. But this is only the beginning as the mountain of lies begins to crumble and we realize literally NOTHING is as it appears! Fast-paced and riveting, the novel will keep you on the edge of your seat!

I’m pretty sure i broke a personal record in reading this book. It only took two hours!! It grabbed me from the first chapter.

What I liked:
-how fast paced it was
-second chance/fresh start
-Jake
-all the twists in the middle
-short chapters
-the humor

But I do think the final twist was predictable-at least to me.

But if you want a super quick, page turning thriller-go for it!

My first book by this author. I'm not sure how I've missed her. Really enjoyed it. Short chapters and multiple POV encouraged binge reading and I read it in one day. Exciting storyline. Tension maintained throughout with twists both predicted and unexpected. I don't think this will be my last book by Amanda McKinney.
