Sometimes the biggest win has nothing to do with the game.

Chase Morgan's reputation is tanking faster than his draft stock.

According to the campus newspaper, I'm the poster boy for "elite-level headaches." A guy who skates through hearts faster than defensive zones. One viral article later, and NHL scouts are questioning my character, my agent's having a meltdown, and my chances of going first-round are circling the drain.
The solution? Fake date someone wholesome. Someone who makes me look mature, focused, and definitely not like a reality TV casting reject.
Enter Sky Sweeney: academic overachiever, competitive swimmer, and, oh yeah, my team captain's extremely off-limits little sister.
The plan is simple: public appearances, strategic Instagram posts, and zero actual feelings. She gets a buffer from her overbearing coach and douchebag ex. I get my reputation back. Win-win.
Except Sky is more than a game. Always has been. Which is why this plan is doomed to fail. Because there's this annoying thing where I can't stop thinking about her...
Turns out, the only thing more dangerous than ruining my draft chances is falling for the one girl I was never supposed to touch.
Game on.

Playing to Win is a laugh-out-loud, swoon-worthy college sports romance featuring fake dating, forbidden attraction, protective siblings, and a hockey player who's terrible at following his own rules.

I'm a sucker for sports romances in general, but as a jock myself, I often can't relate when the FMC is nerdy and bookish and gets winded from a flight of stairs. I loved that both main characters in this one were dedicated athletes. While is this a hockey romance, there wasn't too much hockey, and we also got competitive swimming, which was a nice change of pace.

As an old lady (ok, in my mid 30s), I was a little worried that the fact that I wasn't going to be able to relate to the characters. But on the contrary, it have me some nostalgia and made me think back fondly to my college days, so that was fun.

Anyway, about the book! I feel in love with the characters pretty instantly. Sky was easy to connect with with her drive and unhealthy focus on swimming, and while the "reformed playboy" things is often overused/overdone, I thought Chase was written really well. In general, there were a lot of tropes that normally make me grumble that were well done in this book and I really couldn't fault.

I was terrified of what was going to happen with the 3rd act breakup that I knew would happen. But again, Nicole Crystal handled it in such a thoughtful way that the only thing I could fault was the believability of the breakup catalyst (vague, but trying not to say any spoilers!).

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Overall, this was a super fun book and I'll definitely be checking her other books out!

Simple brother's best friend trope... with a lot of understanding

Plot: A young adult romance with brother's best friend while navigating through their individual goals at the same time.

Genre: Young Adult Romance, Sports Romance

Highlight:
+Article at the first page
+Prioritizing goals individually
+Bonus chapter
+Character description
+Dual POV

My experience: Why do I say the article as the highlight? It literally is the whole premise being summarised and then the book goes to start with actual matters to discuss.
The writing style is simple, relatable and quite practical for the young adults to experience. The fact that it motivates to remember your own identity and achieve your goals is one of the major factors for the high rating. While this plot line is very similar to many, but the approach of it is unique. It promotes the personal growth and relationship building process together. It clearly explains what many books miss out on, romance and love do not mean sacrifice, it means respect and mutual understanding. ✨
The character development can be seen in various quotes and the reflection by both the MLs. I really liked ready a healthy take in this genre trope.

I LOVED this sweet hockey swimmer romance. Both FMC and MMC are competitive in their respective sports. Chase the collegiate hockey player vying for a major league spot and Sky, a serious contender for Nationals in swimming. Two years before they have a brief meeting and then she never hears from him again. It definitely hurt her as she thought they had a connection(not romantic that night) but one that could have been build upon.
The NHL draft is not impressed with his party boy image and his dad and coach come up with an idea to improve his his odds.

In order to appear more wholesome and focused he needs to be committed to one wholesome girl. Chase proposes Sky to be his fake girlfriend. She agrees for reasons of her own and then the magic happens.

This is a positively delightful read. i enjoyed their story and was cheering for them as they navigated their not unexpected, but character building hurdles. I found myself falling in love right along with them. I will be watching for more from this author.

i received this as an ARC read from the author and this is my honest review.

The main characters in this grabbed my attention from the first chapter on.

Chase is a star hockey player following in his brothers footsteps and living the life everyone else wants him to. He's fun, charming, and shows everyone what he wants them to see while hiding his true self behind the smiles and flirtatious attitude.

Sky is a top swimmer who suffered an injury and is working to come back from that while also going through personal life issues. She is very sweet, observant, and tough. She sees people as more than their name and calls their BS.

Together these two have great banter throughout the book and its a great storyline. I love the chemistry between them and the growth of their characters, plus the spice thrown in between.

I couldn't put this book down and would definitely recommend for fans of sports romance, hockey, two athletes trying to make it work with a busy lifestyle, or just anyone looking for a great romance book that has tension, angst, regret, love, laughter, happiness, tears, and hope.

ARC REVIEW: Playing To Win by Nicole Crystal - Book 2 in the Playing for Keeps Series had me hooked me from page one and never let go. Nicole Crystal delivers a romance that's equal parts emotional, electric, and deeply character-driven-and Chase Morgan and Sky Sweeney completely owned my heart.

Chase Morgan is the college hockey playboy with a reputation that's finally caught up with him. Cleaning up his image isn't optional anymore.

Sky Sweeney is a driven college swimmer, juggling a demanding coach, academics, and the pressure to be perfect. She's beautiful, focused, and has forgotten what fun looks like.

The fix for Chase's image? Fake date someone wholesome. Someone grounded. Someone safe.
The problem? Sky is his teammate's-and team captain's-little sister. Extremely, absolutely, completely off-limits.

I knew I was going to fall for Chase. I'm a sucker for a reformed playboy and he is next-level. Chase doesn't just soften—he grows. He shows up. He chooses Sky again and again, and his evolution into a man worthy of her is nothing short of swoon-inducing.

And Sky? She was perfection. As a former swimmer, her mindset, routines, burnout, the way she internalized pressure—| felt every bit of it. It was like stepping back into my own swim days. She's easy to root for, impossible not to love, and so much stronger than she realizes.

What I loved most is that Sky was never just a solution to Chase's problem. She was the exception. The real thing.

Nicole Crystal has quickly become one of my favorite authors, and Playing To Win beautifully proves that the biggest wins in life have nothing to do with the game.

Chase Morgan is a talented, reckless hockey player, and Sky Sweeney—aka Butterfly—is smart, ambitious, and totally off-limits. When a fake-dating arrangement brings them together, sparks fly! 💌 Honestly, it was inevitable that they’d fall in love ⛸️💖—the chemistry is electric from the start.

This story is flirty, fun, and impossible to put down. The slow burn, witty banter, and forbidden romance make every page a delight.

This book is different from Book 1 and doesn’t seem to be directly connected—you can jump in without reading the previous story.

Tropes you’ll love:
🏒 Sports Romance
💌 Fake Dating
🔥 Slow Burn
🚫 Forbidden Romance
💬 Witty Banter
💖 Opposites Attract

“Playing for Keeps” walked so this novel could run. Yall. 5 stars. No notes.

This book was so damn good. I loved the relationships between all of the characters and the sibling relationships felt so accurate! Watching the FMC and MMC grow throughout the book was fun. The pacing felt just right and while this say on my Goodreads shelf for ages, I actually devoured it in 3 days. The ending was satisfying, and I’m so excited for book 3!

ARC READ - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

"Playing to Win" was such a cozy win for me. Chase and Sky are both fiercely athletic in their own worlds, him as a hockey player, her as a competitive swimmer, and that BALANCE worked beautifully. I’m a sucker for a hockey romance, but adding an elite swimmer heroine? Absolute perfection.

This is very much a he-falls-first romance, and Chase’s devotion was everything. It’s tender, feel-good, and emotionally satisfying, perfect if you want a sports romance that focuses on chemistry and character connection.

Second installment to the series & I loved it! I received an advanced copy of this after devouring the first book.

Chase is the playboy hockey player needing to clean up his image, and Sky is the driven swimmer with too much pressure and not enough fun. There’s nothing better than a reformed and misunderstood playboy who shows up and takes care of her in exactly the way she needs 😍

I love the interconnected friendships in this series and can’t wait for the next!

The second book in the Playing the Game series introduces us to Chase, a hockey player with a big dream, whose life has been shaped by the responsibilities and expectations his family has placed upon him. However, now his future is at stake his reputation off the ice is seriously affecting the promising career he has worked so hard to build, and that's when he's forced to turn to Sky.

Sky doesn't have it easy either. She also carries a heavy burden on her shoulders and, moreover, lingering feelings for Chase. They knew each other before, but back then Chase didn't want to take the risk. Now, circumstances force them to rely on each other: he needs her to clean up his image, and she, without realizing it at first, discovers that Chase offers her much more than just a structured schedule he offers her calm, support, and a way to relax.

Between games, feelings begin to grow, and with them, the pressures of their surroundings both are afraid to admit what they feel Chase fears hurting her, and Sky fears her feelings won't be reciprocated. I must admit it was deeply moving to read how they both grappled with their emotions, how they struggled internally until Chase finally opened up completely, revealing his true self the boy who wants to make his own decisions and love Sky the way she deserves.

Sky, for her part, also opens up to him, and Chase becomes her safe haven, showing her that she can relax, that she can have structure without losing her freedom. He offers her precisely that: a sense of freedom she didn't know she needed but when they finally both admit their feelings, a secret threatens to destroy all that happiness. I confess, my heart broke for both of them. I understood why Chase took so long to tell the truth, but I also understood Sky's pain at finding out from someone else, even though she loved him she needed space because the trust had been broken.

Even so, even when both their hearts were hurting, love remained, Chase did everything he could to show her that he truly loved her, that Sky was more important than absolutely everything, even the sport he loves so much. She, understandably, was wary, but little by little she began to see the truth: the real feelings Chase had always had for her, those he had hidden for so long.

In the end, Sky saw the real Chase, the man willing to sacrifice everything for her. It wasn't an easy road, but together they managed to find each other again. Thanks to Sky, Chase found the strength to make his own decisions; thanks to Chase, Sky was able to feel free, and they both achieved the happy ending they so richly deserved, and I loved them deeply.

Now, the story of those I've been waiting for since the first book continues: Luke, darling, it's time you had your story with Emma. The chemistry between them was palpable from the very first moment, and I can't wait to read their book.

In short, discovering this series has undoubtedly been one of the best things that has happened to me this year. Thank you, Nicole, for creating such a beautiful universe, one that captivated me from the very first book. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

A heartwarming and spicy young adult romance that I really enjoyed. The plot is very well written, has a good pace and is full of emotion, heartfelt moments, inner conflicts, a touch of intrigue, romance and steamy love scenes. The tropes are

- Sports romance
- College romance
- Hockey romance
- Fake dating
- Brother’s friend/teammate/roommate to lovers
- Secret crush
- Second chance

I immediately fell in love with Chase and Sky. He is a lovable reformed player who, on the one hand, tries to please his parents, but on the other hand wants to go his own way. Sky is ambitious, down-to-earth, forward and empathetic. The two are perfect for each other, partly because they are both athletes working towards a goal. I not only liked the sizzling chemistry, but also the inner connection, understanding and support between them, which was palpable throughout the book. Chase's dating bucket list and its additions were endearing. I also liked the supporting characters, and it was nice to see some of them again from the previous book. I'm already looking forward to Luke and Emma's story.

Raised in a loveless home, all that matters to Chase Morgan's parents is image and career. When the hockey player makes more headlines with his numerous hookups than with his sporting achievements, thereby jeopardising his future, his father and his PR team persuade him to find a steady, wholesome girlfriend with an impeccable reputation in order to save his career. He chooses Sky Sweeney, the younger sister of his teammate, with whom he spent a lovely platonic night two years ago and then ghosted, even though he could never forget her.
Sky works tirelessly on her comeback as a swimmer under the supervision of her strict, controlling coach, without having a private life. When she is photographed with Chase at a party and the photo makes headlines again, Chase suggests that they fake a relationship to preserve his chances in the draft. In return, he brings more balance and joy into her life and helps her with her training. Sky agrees and soon discovers that there is more to Chase than the party animal and playboy that everyone sees, but falling for him might be a bad idea…

If you like heartfelt young adult sports romance novels with strong heroines, conflict-ridden heroes, emotions, humor and spice, you're sure to enjoy this book!

As an avid reader and lover of hockey romance, Playing to Win was a fun, cozy fake-dating story between a hockey player and a recovering swimmer.

The story was funny and lighthearted, with moments that had me giggling and smiling in all the right places—and blushing when I least expected it.

Very few books manage to surpass the impression left by Book 1, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this installment. I loved both the relationship and the friendship between Chase and Sky. Their witty banter, flirty comebacks, and the way they hesitated to fully let their guards down around each other made the intimate moments feel tender and well earned. And the spice??? 🤌 I genuinely had to pause for a second because I could not, for the life of me, keep a poker face.

Since I had the wonderful opportunity to receive this book as an ARC, I do want to be fully transparent while also making it clear that this is entirely based on my personal reading preferences. Overall, the book was enjoyable and kept me engaged, rooting for the couple, and emotionally invested in both main characters as they navigated their individual struggles and the dynamics of their relationship.

With that in mind, I did feel the pacing felt a little fast in the beginning. There wasn’t much buildup to how things initially started, and while I understand this was likely a deliberate stylistic choice—and one that clearly works for the story—I tend to prefer a slower, more drawn-out build of tension. I love when the anticipation feels almost torturous, leaving me anxiously turning pages while waiting for the characters to finally give in. Because of that preference, the early progression felt quick to me, and the middle slowed slightly in comparison.

That being said, this is in no way a reflection of the author’s talent or the quality of the story itself. Nicole Crystal did a phenomenal job bringing these characters and their journey to life. This simply came down to personal taste, and it didn’t stop me from enjoying Book 2 immensely. I’m very much looking forward to continuing the series and can’t wait to dive into Book 3.

This second book in the Playing the Game series lived up to the bar set in book one.

Chase Morgan is now a junior and after living his best playboy life has to rehab his reputation to avoid losing ground in the upcoming NHL draft. He runs into Sky at a hockey party and when they are caught during an emotional moment a fake dating scheme is hatched.

Chase has grown up in a family where optics and legacy mean more than the individual. He’s been expected to adhere to what he’s told to do.

Sky is his captain’s younger sister and a competitive swimmer coming back from a shoulder surgery. She uses Chase as a shield to try to shake her ex-boyfriend’s focus on reuniting with her. A moment between them is mistaken for something more and when pictures are taken and posted to social media the ground work is already in place for a fake dating scheme.

The slow burn romance is almost secondary to the work these two put in to change up and create balance in Sky’s training regimen. The romance builds due to their past connection two years ago. What started out as a fake relationship quickly adds a growing emotional connection between them

Drama from his dad and Chase’s playboy past were a big influence on Chase, causing conflicts that create obstacles for them to overcome and grow beyond.

I’m eager for the next book in this series because book one and the last epilogue of this book certainly created some excitement for Luke and Emma.

This is a great sport romance that is a slow burn filled with heart, ambition, and purpose.

Sky and Chase are both athletes striving to be the best at their respective sports. For him, hockey at a professional level is his final goal, and for her is recovering and becoming a champion swimmer. They met a few years ago and connected in levels that fit so perfectly to each other, but he was immature and it scared him to be so atuned with someone, so he ghost her, but truly never forgot and kept an eye on her from afar. That is until he needs to clean up his image, and the only person he thinks can help him, is Sky. She is his friend's sister -off limits - she is quiet and caring but also determined to make it in her sport. Once she accepts to help him fake the relationship, and their banter is delicious, their moments sweet and insightful, and their love blooms organically as they mature in life and love. He will show his caring, supporting, and steady character to push and protect her to achieve her goals, and she will be his support, understanding, loyal and caring person. There are obstacles, just like growing pains, in their transition from fake to real, but there is so much connection, understanding, support, and complete love between them.

Be ready for a great sport romance with a delicious slow burn, and unconditional love

I just loved Playing To Win and I couldn’t put it down. The only reason I didn’t read it in one day because I had too much going on in my life. I do love a good hockey romance novel which was one of the main reasons I chose this book. I haven’t read number one in this series but you definitely can read this as a standalone book. However, I will now be reading number one in the series and I can’t wait for the third book in the series to be released later next year. I’m really glad that the author added the final bonus chapter because I did feel that I was missing something but it was the perfect way to end the book. I was really sad to finish as I wanted to stay in the Sky and Chase story. I was trying to think of my favourite parts and I honestly just loved the whole thing but I did especially love the penthouse scene. I also loved the way that the author builds the relationship between Sky and Chase and brings the reader along for the ride. It feels like you fall in love with the characters as they fall in love with each other and grow as individuals. I would recommend this book to any lover of romance novels especially sports romances. I was excited to read Playing to Win, Nichole Crystal's second book in her Playing the Game series. I am a hockey romance fan and I was prepared for the common trope of an arrogant bad boy hockey player who meets his match but I was not prepared for the depth of emotion I felt as I read this story.
Chase, the bad boy who needs a reset and Sky, the good girl who can give him that overhaul, form a genuine relationship that gradually reveals the underlying complexities of feelings and insecurities of they both experience. Chase's persona is as polished as the ice he skates, but the young man readers discover beneath the smooth surface will melt your heart.
Sky is Chase's perfect foil. As driven as he is to succeed, she is tough, controlled, beautiful and recovering from shoulder surgery. She is so focused on regaining her competitive swimming ranking that she allowed her training to consume her life. Adding Chase's request to her to do list may cause her time and focus but she is unable to say no.
Playing to Win was an emotional love story where I was fully engaged and didn't want to put it down. Nicole Crystal has become one on my favorite new to me authors based on reading the 2 books in this series. I encourage other readers to give her a try. You won't be disappointed.

Playing to Win

What I liked:

The banter between Chase and Sky. Also it’s my fave trope - fake dating just does it for me because you know the MMC is going to fall hard!

Sky being a strong character even though she is dealing with being an athlete who had to endure injury and recovery

Chase finding Sky 2 years before the meet each other again but keeping a note all this time (swoon)

The list!! I might just have to steal some of those to use IRL

Zane Morgan 😍

What I didn’t like:

Only a few pages of Grayson (no Sienna) so it doesn’t feel interconnected more adjacent to the first book

Overall I really enjoyed this book. Nicole knows how to bring out the flaws of her characters while also helping them build to be the best versions of themselves. I also love hockey romances so this was a great read for me.

You will not be disappointed with this book. One of my first reads of 2026 and I’m glad I had the opportunity to read Chase and Sky’s story!

The second book in the Silver Pines series. Another hockey book, but also swimming which is refreshing again.

The trope is fake dating, and as such as cliche as the first book and very predictable. Chase and Sky met 2 years ago and after a night of just talking they both knew this was special. And scary. So Chase ghosts her.

When he needs to clean up his image to rescue his draft prospects, Skye is his first, and only, choice.

Sky needs a fake boyfriend to ward off her ex. So they come to an arrangement. No feelings, just fake.

Yeah, that never works, LOL

As cliche as the trope is, it didn’t bother me at all because Nicole is an amazing writer. Engaging, real raw emotion, nice spicy scenes, and great flow.

I also like that the inevitable break-up comes halfway, leaving lots of time for the coming back together. No grand gesture, kiss and make up, epilogue. A believable journey from heartbreak to second chance instead. And both have their own sport triumphs, which is refreshing.

I liked this book. Deducted a star as it would be nice not knowing how it’s going to evolve, but otherwise a great read!

I’ve finished Playing to Win, and honestly, it delivered everything you’d expect from a hockey romance and then some. The yearning was there, the banter was sharp and fun, and yes, the smut absolutely delivered.

Chase and Sky’s story starts with fake dating and slowly turns into something real, and that transition was genuinely sweet to read. Their banter is one of the strongest parts of the book; it felt natural and effortless, and there were plenty of moments that actually made me laugh out loud.

What I especially enjoyed was the character growth. Watching Chase slowly figure out how to be in a relationship and what love actually means, while Sky comes to understand what she truly wants, added a lot of depth to the romance. It wasn’t just about attraction; it was about emotional growth on both sides.

Overall, Playing to Win is a fun, romantic, and satisfying read for anyone who enjoys hockey romance with strong chemistry, humor, and heart.

This spicy little sports romance is book #2 of the Playing the Game series but can be read as a standalone. This book offers 2 competitive sports members – Chase (MMC) is a College Hockey player, about to make it in the big leagues and Sky (FMC) is a competitive swimmer. When Sky is approached by her ex, she turns to Chase for help with a fake relationship. This is even better for Chase because he needs to clean up his image to be looked at by major league teams. This shows the twists and turns their relationship must take to make it through their struggles, and in the meantime, they grow even bigger into their sports, and love blossoms. This is a laugh-out-loud, swoony story that I would want to read about again. Looking forward to more books in the series so I can continue meeting their friends and teammates. Also, this book had a sneak peek of the next book…. I am anxiously awaiting this storyline!

Playing to Win (Playing the Game #2) by Nicole Crystal was everything I hoped it would be—and more. After how much I loved Book 1, I could not wait to finally get Chase and Sky’s story, and this book absolutely lived up to the first.

Nicole Crystal has a true talent for bringing characters to life. Chase and Sky felt so real, so layered, and so easy to connect with that they practically leapt off the page. Their chemistry was undeniable, and I loved watching their relationship unfold through mutual support, understanding, and growth.

The blend of hockey and swimming was such a fun and unique dynamic, and the second-chance romance was handled beautifully. Seeing them navigate past hurts while showing up for each other in meaningful ways made their love story incredibly satisfying.

This book checked all the boxes for me—sports romance, emotional depth, supportive partners, and characters worth rooting for. If you loved Book 1 or enjoy second-chance romances with strong character development, Playing to Win is a must-read. 🏒🏊‍♀️❤️📖

I received an ARC of this book from BookSirens in exchange for an honest review.

Just like the first book in the series, I really loved this one. I don’t know if it’s the author’s writing style or the way she builds her stories, but I find her books truly captivating. I don’t hand out many 4-star ratings, but this book absolutely earned it for me.

I especially enjoyed the buildup of the story and learning more about Chase’s backstory. His past added depth to his character and made his journey easy to connect with. It did take me a little bit to remember how he fit in with the characters from the first book, but once I settled in, it didn’t take away from my enjoyment. The books don’t feel strictly interconnected, which allows each story to stand on its own.

Overall, this was a great read that kept me engaged from start to finish. I ended up finishing it in one sitting, which says a lot. A very solid 4-star book for me.

Fake dating for PR and Hockey. One of my favourite combinations!!

It was interesting to see this couple away from the rink and honestly I felt that Sky’s swimming training took the spotlight in that regard for this couple.

Teammates younger sister is also a fun dynamic, but I have to say Trent was pretty lowkey considering he was Chase’s captain.

I admit I didn’t really feel a lot a continuity with the team from book 1. I’m sure there was character crossover, but I really felt like the book 1 players had moved on and this was a new set of players to enjoy.

I enjoyed these two and it was a quick read for me. A bit spicy (definitely open door), but nothing outrageous being a college couple.

I can’t wait for Book 3 and Emma!! I called it when I read Book 1 that she was going to be causing shenanigans and the epilogue set it up perfectly 😍😍

Thank you to BookSirens and Nicole Crystal for the advanced copy 💜💜

Really enjoyed this story
This is the second story in the Playing The Game series featuring hockey player Chase and swimmer Sky.
Sky is the sister of one of Chase’s teammates and they both shared a moment a few years ago.
Fast forward two years and Chase has earnt a reputation as a player with the ladies and it is destroying his career prospects.
He requires a good girl to date, to be in a fake relationship with and that is where Sky comes into the story.
I enjoyed their chemistry, the banter, the fun times plus the spice, finding this story was also emotional at times too.
It certainly wasn’t always straightforward for Chase and Sky as they had some issues to work through adding to the storyline.
A great read with really loveable characters.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
