We have another (at this point, the third) stunning Library Edition from MillarWorld, and this time, we’re diving into its magical side. This edition collects the first two Magic Order series in one place, and yes, it’s classic Millar.

We follow a family of sorcerers and magicians who protect the mortal world from supernatural threats and maintain order. The main characters are an eclectic mix—there’s the strict and distant father, the rebellious daughter wasting her potential, the good son trying desperately to earn his father’s approval, and then the son whom the father loves the most… but who, for good reasons, wants nothing to do with magic or the family.

So, we have a grand-scale family saga and drama, and of course, no such story would be complete without villains. To go into more detail, I’d have to drop some spoilers, which I won’t do. However, I will say that Madam Albany, the villain of the first volume, felt much more menacing and terrifying than Victor Korne, who took on the antagonist role in the second. Overall, I found the first volume significantly stronger than the second. The villain, the development of family relationships, the unveiling of the magical community, and a few surprises all contributed to that.

The second volume is still a great read, offering more insight into the workings of the magical community and exploring the origins of the Magic Order. However, the “wow” factor I experienced in the first volume just wasn’t there. That said, I still highly recommend it—it’s a genuinely good read.

• Complete collection in this edition – 4/5
