✨ Rating: 5⭐️ 🫧 Vibes: resilience of strong women 🎶 Song: fighter - christina aguilera 📖 Favourite Quote: "I don't want to be terrified anymore." 📚 Would I recommend? yes! 💬 tldr thoughts: a great story packed with women empowerment and resilience!
In the package: 📦 female friendships 📦 twisty ending 📦 survival and strength
Plot: After an attack leaves Evie traumatized and afraid to leave her apartment, she begins self-defence training with her best friend, Steph, in an effort to reclaim her sense of safety.
Thoughts: I really enjoyed this novella and I think a lot of women can related to this story, unfortunately. The portrayal of Evie and Steph's friendship was so sweet, and both characters felt genuine and deeply believable. This book explored the fear, isolation, and the exhausting work of survival after violence in a very realistic way. While it's a heartbreaking story, it dealt with the themes beautifully and I loved watching Evie evolve into a strong empowered woman. I had a theory about the ending and I was totally wrong, I didn't see it coming!
This book is an important, realistic read that will resonate with so many women. If you’ve ever sent your location to a friend before a date, or walked home at night with your keys between your fingers “just in case,” Just In Case by J.R. Vieira is one for you.
Jess has such a gift with words, her characters feel familiar, likeable, and painfully real. Despite being a short story, it carries so much weight. It’s packed with meaning, tension, and truths we rarely speak about out loud. The ending left me with a feeling I can’t fully describe… empty yet whole, satisfied yet aching. Because it really does make you think, and then rethink... It certainly stays with you.
This is absolutely a five-star read. We should all learn to channel our inner Lara Croft… and we should all be lucky enough to have a friend like Steph.
This book made me grateful for the incredible women in my own life, the ones who show up, lift me up, and protect me. My own Stephs. 💞
