The desert buries secrets – but it never keeps them buried for long.
Once a lawman, now disillusioned by the failure of justice and burdened by guilt, Clint Langston drifts into a desert town in Arizona searching for silence.
Instead, he stumbles onto the charred remains of a massacre – and the only survivor, young Ruby Yates. Ruby clings to life as Clint delivers her into the hands of frontier doctor Josie Holmes, a woman tempered by grief yet unbroken by fear.
Together, Clint and Josie uncover the iron grip of the Destiny Railroad, a company that buys, bullies, or buries anyone and anything standing in the way of its ruthless empire. Backed by bribes and corrupt lawmen, the railroad’s reach stretches from dusty trails to polished boardrooms – and its enforcer, Eli Steele, leaves nothing but blood and ruin in his wake.
Standing between Clint and the truth is Steele’s gang of hired killers – merciless men who burn towns, slaughter innocents, and crush all who dare defy the tracks.
As bullets fly and allies fall, Clint is forced to reckon with the man he once was. Will he keep running from the ghosts that haunt him, or make his last stand for justice, even if it costs him everything?
Each novel in the Western Justice Adventures series is a standalone story, with sprinkles of romance, that can be read out of order.
Clint comes home to find his family murdered and his home burned down. The Destiny Railroad needs the land. Just wandering to find a job, he comes across a recently burned homestead with the Husband, son and wife murdered. Destiny Railroad needs the land. But this land still has a little girl, Ruby, hidden beneath the floorboards and she has documents that point to Destiny Railroad. Taking Ruby into the next town to the Dr. he finds the Dr. is young, and a woman. Her family has been affected by the murdering thugs working for Destiny Railroad. Getting the documents to a judge that isn't bought off could be a challenge, if for no other reason than the murdering thugs seem to be destroying every one in their path. A lot of lives are lost by the time they find the judge and that is the beginning. Really good story!
I read at least 20 books a month and eventually they start to read the same. Lately I have been reading R.O. Lane when this book came up on my timeline. Storm has written some good stories but at times the stories have a similar theme. This latest release had a great plot and a variety of characters that added to the storyline. At times it seemed as if we had reached the end and an additional plot twist would surface and enrich the plot. At the end, I immediately pulled up his page to look at other books I may have dismissed earlier in his collection.
They have killed his family. They kill whoever they want in the name of progress. He finds a little girl whose family had been murdered by these greedy men. Their adventure together leads to danger, shootings, love, and learning how to get a town to standup to evil men before they all are murdered. The author has captured the time of the railroad expansion across the western states in the 1880s giving us the viewpoint of greed and corruption.
Excellent story with great characters both good and evil. Jesse Storm an exceptional writer. Unique ending that was very thorough and well scripted. I enjoyed this novel and look forward to more of his work.
