A tale of love, hope, and humanity set against the backdrop of post-apocalyptic New Zealand.
"Tomorrow.
"For ten long years, that was a word that none of us really thought about. We lived day to day, and scrounged a living from the ruins of our dead society. But, now that is changing. Survivors have begun to flock to my cause, and with each new person we become stronger and more self-reliant.
"The virus is still here, in the air, in the water, in the food that we eat and inside our own bodies. Only our meagre immunity stands between us and the walking death. Viruses mutate, though. It could still claim us all eventually.
"But in the darkness, there is beacon of hope, a shining light to guide our way to tomorrow. Rumours have begun to surface about a cure, an anti-virus that could finally render Ebola X obsolete.
"This is the dawn of our reawakening. If the rumours turn out to be true, then there will nothing to hold us back. We can rebuild, we can find other survivors and bring them to our little city - unite everyone that we can beneath our banner of hope.
"Are the rumours true, though? I don't know yet, but I intend to find out."

3.5 Stars 2022 ~ 4 Stars I’ve been wanting to reread this series for a few years now and it did not disappoint. The evolution of heroine Sandy in the ‘After’ is a drastic change from start to end and it was such a fun ride. With the threat of dangerous infected urging Sandy on, she leads them all on a treacherous but necessary ride to Avalon: the place that will become New Zealand’s first new city. Once the group (growing in numbers by the day) reach their destination after a few literal bumps in the road, rebuilding can begin. I’m a bit surprised we really never hear anything more about the infected. Sure they get a cure but to just leave that thread hanging is a little annoying especially as they seemed to be congregating, becoming more of a threat and actively moving searching for pray.
The gang loses an original member and I didn’t think the death would affect me but I definitely had tears as they were mourned. Ten years have passed since the virus wiped out the majority of the world. Everyone is tired and so ready to move on, ready to settle down and return back to a more normal life. One where kids go to school, adults go to work and everyone creates a community who has each others back. I loved that they work so hard to preserve their native history but also collectively work to start anew history starting with the rebirth of Avalon in the ‘after.’ The story ends on a very happy note. It also strikes up more interest as the bigger world is revealed and it kinda leaves me wishing there was more to come. Nonetheless this was a great series and this book was the perfect and much needed end for Sandy and the world.
All in all a satisfying conclusion to the series. The new civilization is formed, and work is made towards a vaccine to protect children from the virus. I was pretty happy with almost everything except for Ryan (I think that was his name) - Why would Sandy's sister welcome back the waste of flesh who abandoned her when their baby died? Why would Sandy name a child after him.
I just found that part annoying, Ryan was a waste. I would have liked to have known if the mutated infected ever made it to the new civilization and if they caused any troubles, but all in all it was a good series.

I raced through the entire series in 3 days, couldn't wait to see how things turned out. Unlike most dystopian stories, this one holds out hope that the survivors have learned from the past to create a better future.
I really enjoyed this final book, it rounds of the series beautifully. Of the four books the first was a great standalone novel, the second was too much of a romance for my liking, the third and forth were just right.
Spring. The time of new beginings when things are finally coming together for the survivors after more than a decade of uncertainity. The group is making it's way to Avalon and getting bigger every day. It's not always easy for them, but everything is coming into place slowly but surely.
We've seen Sandy come from being shy and uncertain around people to coming into her own becoming a leader in every way. She is strong and sure and when she isn't she has people around her to help figure things out. She practices what she preaches never just saying "go do this" or "this is how we should do things" but doing what she asks others to do and living by what she says others should live by. She is my type of heroine and I've loved seeing her story play out throughout this series.
This series shows what things could be like in a post-apocolyptic setting and how survivors would be like and how they might do things in order to keep on living. I enjoyed each of the characters and their stories, making you feel like you're right there with them through their struggles and triumphs. The series as a whole kept me interested right from the start and I was excited to see the characters getting the HEA's. They might not be real people but the way it was written makes you feel like they could have been and you were excited right along with them as everything finally came together.
I am so happy and sad at the same time. I have loved this series and hate to see it end. The ending was amazing. I also appreciate that the author gave me a glimpse of their future. This series is so much more than a zombie or post apocalyptic story. It's a beautiful story about a group of people who becomes a family and have the desire to not only create a new community, but make it better than it was before. The group had to face and over come so many challenges. The series took me through so many emotions and made me shed a tear more than once. I can't wait to read more from Dreyer. She is an amazing writer and I can't wait to go on another adventure with her.
I've been checking out the first book in this series but for some reason never read it...but I finally did and I'm so glad. I loved the characters...Sandrine just grew so much thru the series. Loved her strength and the way she found herself and her love for others. All the characters just seemed to burst from the pages as if they were real! This author really knows how to tell a story!
Almost three, cause the whole Maddy thing is really meh to me.
BUT! This was awesome! It was so beautiful! And, as part of the LGBT community, I was so happy to see gay, lesbian, bisexual and bi-gender characters! The sense of community and how they were all together and building something real... it was just lovely!
The fitting end of a 4 1/2 book series. This was a wonderful series of survivors of a deadly plague that spread through the world. How do you survive .. how do you keep the best parts of your humanity .. can you rebuild. Thoughtful. I would recommend this series to those who like this genre.
