Althea What was supposed to be a Fall Break road trip with my roommates turned into a nightmare. He drugged me, stole me from my friends, and set me loose atop his mountain to hunt me down with a pack of dogs. I was the only one to ever survive the hunt when I became his obsession. Will I ever be able to escape or am I doomed to be his forever prey?
Jericho We're all animals. Some of us just embrace it more than others. She keeps me on my toes, wrapping herself around my claw and soothing the monster within. Her tenacity calls to my beast. He wants to keep her and so do I. This game of predator and prey has never been more thrilling and I find myself wanting to cage a little fox.
Opal Blackstone is an indie author of dark and paranormal romance. She loves writing why choose, morally gray and dark characters, and toxic romantic dynamics.
At her soul, she’s just a feral nerdy lady who loves complicated love and escaping into fictional worlds. When she’s not reading about anti-heroes, villains, demons, and monsters you’ll find her listening to masked rock bands, playing cozy games with romantic subplots, and sacrificing her darlings to the blood moon.
At around 108 pages, it’s a quick novella that can easily be finished in one sitting.
This is a capture romance with what I would consider an unconventional HEA. There are plenty of red flags, and I wouldn’t necessarily say the MMC gets a full redemption arc. What we do get is a lot of internal conflict. He’s constantly battling the darker, more violent side of himself, and while there are moments of softness, they’re often unpredictable and a little unsettling.
To clarify, this isn’t a monster romance. The “beast” is entirely metaphorical.
I also wouldn’t classify this as Stockholm syndrome. For me, it felt more like survival and acceptance. The FMC understands the reality of her situation and adapts accordingly. What I appreciated most was that she never completely loses herself. She isn’t naive, she isn’t easily manipulated, and she never forgets that she’s there against her will. Even when she enjoys certain moments, she’s fully aware of the circumstances surrounding them.
Honestly, her mental strength is what sold the story for me. Her reactions felt believable, and I found myself thinking, if I were in this situation, I’d probably be making some of the same choices just to survive. It made the story feel grounded in a way that was both unsettling and engaging.
The MMC definitely falls first. The FMC remains cautious throughout the story, always looking for opportunities to escape and never fully dropping her guard. That dynamic worked really well for me.
Because it’s a novella, there isn’t a ton of plot packed into the page count, but there are enough tense moments to keep things moving. I was never quite sure what would happen next, and I appreciated watching the MMC slowly change because of her influence.
The ending leaves enough room for a continuation if the author ever wanted to expand the story, but it also feels complete on its own.
Overall, I found the writing easy to follow, engaging, and smooth. Nothing felt forced or rushed, and I genuinely enjoyed the experience.
If you enjoy capture romances, cautious FMCs, and unconventional happy endings, this one might be worth checking out.
Jericho is one of the most red-flag love interests I've ever read... but if not Daddy, why Daddy shaped???
This is not a romance in the traditional sense. This is Stockholm Syndrome. This is trauma bonding. This is accidentally taming the beast. What starts with conditioning and psychological torture ends with reciprocity and something CLOSE to traditional love, and it's a blood-soaked, tear-stained, yet deliciously fun ride to get there.
The 3 ⭐️ rating comes not because I didn't enjoy myself, but because I feel like the writing itself was just shy of being worth higher. The first-person narration was a little stilted and stiff in many instances, feeling less personal and more factual, and there wasn't a distinct tonal difference between the two POVs. There were a handful of tense shifts and grammatical errors.
However, the pacing was excellently managed, especially for a novella!
For a debut release, Opal Blackstone has set the stage for what promises to be a delectable career and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next!
I find that I typically struggle to find a romance novel that I enjoy due to the writing and thankfully, Human Hunter is filled with writing that I found myself enjoying as I turned each and every page. To me, the switches in points of view did not take away from the narrative and actually gave a nice peek into the minds of both of our main characters that I was thoroughly pleased with. This tale was delightfully dark and I look forward to more works from this author!
This reminded me of an old school dark romance (I guess it would be pitch black by today's standards). Definitely check the CWs if that's something concerning for you. There is a lot of wild stuff crammed into this little book. The pacing was really good for a novella, and my only complaint is that we never really learn anything about the MMC or his history.
