Kendra Williams has been the sole caretaker of her four younger siblings since their parents were killed in an alcohol-related airplane crash when she was only twenty years old. She has worked her entire adult life, sacrificing her dreams and her chance at love, to keep her family together and to keep their family cattle ranch safe for future generations.
Someone doesn't want that to happen.
Michelle Loving has made a successful career out of telling the American public what to think and what they should care about. She is hired to create an image of historical significance for the century-old cattle ranch, but finds herself in over her head. Not only is someone gunning for the ranch, but when it comes to loving the rustic, controlling, beautiful woman in charge of the Heartland, Michelle is shooting in the dark.
Two women... One impossible task... A love that will not be silent.
I liked the story in general but the drama was way over the top and the push and pull of the romance part of it was exhausting and got very tired towards the end. I can't count how many times the villain broke the law and no police were involved. Halfway through the story I kept wondering why no one was calling an attorney. It made the entire story somewhat implausible and ridiculous. Also it seemed like the author couldn't decide why the two main characters couldn't stay together so she threw in every lesbian cliche. Broken heart, too good for one another, wouldn't want to live in the country, etc. Literally they don't end up together until the last page of the book but we are subjected to 300 pages of will they/won't they. The writing itself was good, great idea for a story, passionate scenes and good characters but it would have benefited from a good editor thinning out the melodrama.
This was a very entertaining and enjoyable novel. You will find a little bit of everything in the story line. There is friendship, love, death, family relationships, murder, and a bit of humor. The story is very well written and the characters well developed, if you met them on the street you would know them immediately. I highly recommend this novel to anyone and especially if you like the old west.
The happy moments in this book are like 10 pink sprinkles in a tar pit of stress, triggers and depression. The writing was good which is really the only reason I pulled it up to 3 stars.
I enjoyed the book but not quite as much as I thought I would.
The plot was a little far-fetched, I thought. I found it difficult to believe that the government would award the licence for the land to the man who made the accusations of impropriety without at least allowing the current holders to answer the 'charges'. But then I don't know a great deal about it so maybe they are that corrupt, and I do the author a disservice.
The refusal of the two women to admit they loved each other also became annoying but in general I enjoyed the characters.
It was also somewhat darker than I thought with the bodies piling up, but the views of ranch life were good.
I do not have enough words for how amazing this story is. The layers of texture and depth that were built in to give such a rich emotion are absolutely incredible. The story itself makes you laugh and cry and flail a little as the two main characters wrestle with the depths of their feelings and how to admit that it's okay to feel. I love this I love this I love this and I want to find a hundred other stories that meet the same level of incredible.
I really liked the story and all the characters. Sometimes you just wanted to smack them around for being stupid but at the same time you could understand where they were coming from.
I love to read something trashy after something heavy. Turned out to be an actual love story and not trashy like I'd hoped. Still a good quick read. A nice twist on the typical romance novel.
