Miss Henrietta Bellinger cannot have children and is facing financial ruin. Nevertheless, she accepts an invitation to her dearest friend’s wedding.
But when she arrives in the deepest moor of Yorkshire, her friend has fled, and the prospective groom has also disappeared.
All Henrietta finds is a lonely, abandoned wedding gown on the bed.
She succumbs to temptation and slips into the dress. No one will ever know.
No one except the Nightmare Duke, who suddenly stands in the doorway behind her.
To avoid a scandal, the Duke proposes a shocking if she marries him, he will provide for her in comfort and security for the rest of his life.
Just moments ago, she was the mouse-grey Miss Bellinger.
Now she is the Duchess of Blackburrow.
The Duke has saved her from destitution, yet now she is bound in marriage to the man she detests above all others. Of course, he expects her to give him an heir, and he visits her bedchamber night after night. How can she make him understand… she can never give him a child?
It's a rocky start when Henrietta becomes the unexpected bride of the Nightmare Duke. Mishaps, mistakes and rules made to be broken, convince her she will never make a good duchess. But the intolerant duke learns that his duchess isn't one to sit back and say nothing. He wouldn't have her any other way. New author for my TBR. Descriptive sex.
Miss Henrietta Bellinger attends the wedding of a friend only to find when she arrives, neither the groom or bride are present for it. When she goes to the room her friend was using while preparing for her wedding, she finds the note her friend left for her. Henrietta also comes upon the wedding gown, and because she is unsure if she will every be a bride herself, she tries the gown on. The Duke of Blackburrow comes into the room and finds Henrietta wearing the bridal gown and demands that she take it off, as they argue over who is at fault for the wedding not taking place, her friend, Amelia or his brother, Rowan, the Duke decides to ask Henrietta to marry him to save the family from scandal Initially, Henrietta says no, but after realizing it may be the only other offer she may get, given her past, she agrees to the marriage. Henrietta is honest with Richard when he mentions the heirs he is expecting her to provide and informs him that she has been told by a doctor that she will never bear children given she has Scarlet fever. Despite their marrying for convenience, Henrietta soon realizes that she loves Richard and is determined that she will convince him to admit that he has feelings for her too. It is only after the fiance who jilted her on the day of her wedding, gets too close to Henrietta, that Richard's feelings for her are on display. When someone leaves a baby at their home, Henrietta is instantly attached to the little one but Richard informs her that they cannot keep the child. After they realize that the child belongs to his brother, Rowan they do keep the child and later adopt a set of twin boys and another son one year later. After seeing that Richard has no problems with accepting children that are not his biological heirs, Henrietta finally believes that he loves her for who she is and does not think she is useless to him because she cannot give him heirs. A romantic tale with lots of detail to show the progression of how Richard and Henrietta come to realize the love between them has been their all along. Lots of steam between the couple with several epilogues to catalog the extended history of them and their offspring. I received an ARC from Emmi West and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Henriett Bellinger had almost been married till she was left at the altar then ruined by a comment by a duke. Now she knows she will be a spinster and never have the children she dreamed of. She is also broke and soon may be homeless, so when she receives an invite to her best friend's wedding at Blackburrow Hall the home of the same duke! Richard, the Duke of Blackburrow or as society nicknamed “The Nightmare Duke”. As a young girl she had been in love with the duke now she despises him but also wasn’t going to give up plenty of food and comfort for spite. When she went to find her friend, Amelia, who was to marry the dukes' younger brother, Rowan, she found a letter saying she had fled the wedding. When she sees the most beautiful dress, she has ever seen lying on the bed, she doesn't think she just tries it on! Only to be found in said dress by the duke himself whose brother has also run away! To stop any scandal, he marries her. She gets a home, safety, and he believes he will get sons; she tries to tell him she can’t give him that but as a duke he doesn’t believe anything is out of his control. Wow, what a story this is, I could not put it down reading late into the night too. Both Richard and Henrietta have so much to overcome, learn plus many secrets to unravel too. There is a ton of emotion, passion, and understanding in this book. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. The story was made even better by the grandmother and the Duke of Darlington, plus a number of dogs too. Grab a copy and get started. You will not be sorry.
We have Miss Henrietta Bellinger cannot have children and is facing financial ruin. She was left at the altar and is a walking scandal but she comes to Blackburrow Hall from London to attend her only dear friends wedding! She arrives one hour before the wedding and the bride and bridegroom have vanished! Richard Montgomery, the Duke of Blackburrow has a tiny delimma a wedding with several guests and no bride and no groom! He goes to Lady Abigail’s room and Henrietta is trying on the dress laid on her bed! Richard is inspired to offer Henrietta all the books she could ever desire and of course to avoid scandal for her friend to be his Duchess! The invitations were mysterious and did not designate who the bride and groom were? Perfect for the madcap scheme! Richard and all the Dukes before him did not have one romantic bone on their body until Henrietta! She comes in like a world wind and turns his life upside down! Henrietta still can’t believe that the man who ruined her prospects is now her husband! These two have chemistry and steam to fog glasses! But Henrietta bemoans motherhood but Richard never gives up! He is a true book boyfriend! Bravo! Outstanding! I received an ARC copy for my unbiased review!
Henrieta Bellinger is on her way to the wedding of her very good friend, Amelia,to Rowan Montgomery, the Marquess of Blackburrow and brother to Richard, "the nightmare duke.". But when she arrives, she discovers that the bride-to-be has disappeared, leaving only a terse note for Henrietta to explain her absence, and the Marquess is likewise missing, having returned to Italy. What a predicament!
But there must be a wedding (thankfully, no names were on the invitations) and guess who got married? Richard and Henrietta! I'll leave it to the reader to discover how that came about.
This is an absolutely delightful grumpy/sunshine romance, and Henrietta has her work cut out for her. She doesn't even like Richard because of a hurtful comment he made to her several years past, which he obviously does not remember, since he doesn't even seem to recall meeting her before her arrival for the wedding. And Richard had no intention of ever getting married at all. Well, good intentions and all that.....
I found only one grammatical error that was overlooked in proofreading, so you'll find the book a delight to read if you're a nitpicker like I am. I highly recommend this charming and authentic Regency romance. Enjoy!
Henrietta has come to Yorkshire to attend her friend’s wedding to the brother of the Duke of Blackburrow. When she arrived in Amelia’s room, she discovered her friend had run away. The duke comes into the room and finds Henrietta alone. To protect the family name, he “asks” her to marry him. For reasons of her own, she accepts. It is to be the epitome of a marriage of convenience. As they settle in, things don’t go exactly as Richard sees it. Will he be able to keep his distance, or will Henrietta be able to romanticize him? This is a well- crafted story with great characters. With Richard and Henrietta, we have a stodgy duke with an ordered life and an outspoken caring young woman. What could go wrong? Add in a delightful grandmother, a matchmaking friend, and a baby on the doorstep and things stay busy. There is a good portion of humor. What new husband writes out his daily activities (all of them) for his new wife to learn? Tension, secrets, emotion, misunderstanding, a bit of mystery, and finally a passionate love story keep the pages turning. I reviewed a special copy of this book.
What a beautiful Historical Regency Romance Story about a woman Henrietta, who was left at the alter trying to figure out her life. When her friend invites her to her wedding she arrives only to find she fled and a beautiful gown just lying on the bed. Her moment of weakness by trying on the dress she now finds herself face to face with the Duke of Blackburrow, Richard. He’s just discovered his brother also fled and has a manor full of guest. Being practical he makes a deal with Henrietta to marry him and her outspoken ways gets the better of her and finds herself married! These two are good hearted and Richard doesn’t want to show it so Henrietta makes it her goal to help him find romance and love. Henrietta knows she’ll never be able to have children and Richard has faith she will so one night they find a baby on their front steps giving them an opportunity that gives them a chance ay being parents and sharing the love they have. Richard is a good husband and gives Henrietta more than she ever thought possible in life.
I enjoyed reading about Henrietta & The Duke! Their story was so easy to get lost in & not want to put down. I loved that The Duke was able to put aside his wants & provide Henrietta the family she so desired!
They were both hard headed & set in their ways but built a beautiful life with one another.
He dislikes that she doesn’t have “manners”, when in reality that’s one of the things he comes to love most about her through out their relationship.
She cannot stand him since he talked badly about her, even though she’s secretly been in love with him her entire life!
The Duke spoils her with her wishes of books, barefoot dances in the garden & a family they choose.
Henrietta loves The Duke regardless of his grumpiness. She loves him more with each passing day for the subtle things he does for her.
I was gifted an ARC copy for my honest review. Thank you for the opportunity.

The story is quick paced, maybe a bit too quick. The opening scenes showed promise, but the story quickly became a drag. The hints of personality from the hero and accounts of his kind deeds didn't quite makeup for his wooden personality. The heroine and her obsession with romance novels very quickly got on my nerves.
The final one fourth of the book manages to salvage it a bit, but ultimately I'm just glad it's over. It's rare to read a book where at the end i don't care about any of the characters or their future.
This was such a fun read: I loved Henrietta, she was my sort of person, funny, sarcastic and knew her own mind. Richards was a product of his upbringing: believing that routine, exercise and family honour, is all that matters. I enjoyed how the story unfolded and the characters were fantastic; I was sorry when I came to the end of the book. I voluntarily received and reviewed an ARC copy of the book.
I really enjoyed this book! The romance developed well and the banter went from humor to heat despite the unconventional way everything began. There was a little twist to this book that I haven't seen in romance books with happily ever afters but it was so well done by the author that I kept cheering for them both to the end. Definitely worth the read.
I read this thru KU. I may buy it bc I liked it so much. It was a slow burn unfriendly arrangement to lovers tale. There was minimal spice. The focus was on trust, duty, love and found/ chosen family. Idt it will be an all time fave but it's pretty high up there for me. Hence, 4 stars.
Who has never tried on someone else's clothes? But for Henrietta, her curiously gains her more than she even imagined. Suddenly she finds herself more involved in wedding bliss than she imagined. And with Richard's expectations, she has a lot to work with.
I really liked this book. There was romantic tension and love. There was sexual tension and sex scenes were not too explicit. Mary Balogh like. Not anatomy lessons which have ruined many of the writings of favored authors that I enjoyed during the Covid pandemic.
I truly enjoyed the twists and surprises that author, Emmi West, imaginatively spun into this delightful romance. West is a new author to me and I plan to read more of her books.
This book is a bit childish. Probably a great selection for teen who wants access to racier novels. The sex scenes are present but not overly graphic. The climax isn’t anything too terrible. It was a fun, easy read.
I found this to be a very engaging read. I really liked Henrietta, she was quite outspoken and determined but she had a good heart. Richard Montgomery, Duke of Blackburrow was very aware of keeping his family’s good name. A situation occurred when Henrietta was visiting his estate and she found herself married to the duke. Richard had made it clear that he wasn’t looking for romance and Henrietta explained her situation. I did enjoy their interaction, the way Henrietta was determined to bring out Richard’s romantic side. The grandmother was a lovely person. This had some passionate scenes, a troublesome relative and a lovely romantic scene. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
