When I see her face, for the first time in my life, I want something only for myself...

Nasrin

I spend my time in Gahn Thaleo's mountain with a combination of irritation and suspicion. I don't trust this manipulative, scarred mountain Gahn. He never shows any emotion on that stony face of his. His sight stars are an impenetrable veil that give me nothing.

Even if they are always on me.

I can't stand it.
So I decide to try to learn what I can about him - see what makes him tick. Learn the story of how he got that terrible scar.

But the more time I spend with him, understanding who he was, who he is, who he was never allowed to become, the more my suspicions melt into something else. Something deeper than I've ever felt for anyone before.

Those feelings have to disappear. Because Gahn Thaleo follows the Vrika's word like it is law. He would never choose me without the mate bond being bestowed upon him.

And I could never be with someone who didn't truly choose me for themselves.

Thaleo was such an enigmatic MMC and I liked seeing the curtain pulled back on what made him tick. He had a traumatic background and an obsessive need to put himself second in all things to the clan. Nasrin was introverted and self-possessed, and had a compassionate side that came out in full force when needed. Their love story was complicated for the first while, but of course ended in a HEA. I would have like a more thorough explanation for why Thaleo hated Errok so very much, but it’s not hard to make assumptions based on their wildly different personalities.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: violence, gore, near death experiences, chemical burns, head injuries, grief, shame, animal attack, past child abuse, loss of parents and family members, trauma, body dissociation, abduction (past), political machinations, animal attack

This FMC seemed to be painted with broad strokes compared to most of the series. She suffers a downgrade to near-generic after the first chapter. Mostly fine for formulaic alien romance, but not usual for this series. What happened to tryna grow beans or draw maps or manufacture birth control? I did like the question of free will vs. fated mates explored here a little.
I liked this one well enough in the end. It won't go down as a favorite. Thaleo's HEA has been a long time coming. I am still invested in our unmated guys.

Every time I read a book in this series I think "Ok this mmc is my favorite and no one could top him!" but then the next book comes around and Ursa makes me a liar.

"I had never been taught what happiness was. But if I had to define it now, if I had to give it another name, it would be hers." Major swoons. My heart broke for Thaleo. We learn so much about him and his past, and that just made me love him even more. He never believed he could choose anything for himself but quickly lost the will to fight against his attraction to Nasrin.

I loved seeing more of the Deep Sky world and people. And this new terrifying monster. Ursa had me on the edge of my seat during the action scenes near the end!

It's always a joy coming back to this world and these idiot aliens.

5 ⭐️ URSA DAX, YOU NEVER MISS. (i also make no apologies for how long this review is going to be, i once again dug out the bluetooth keyboard to type everything up)

i jumped on this one as soon as it hit my inbox. the sneak peaks we got on patreon only made me more hungry for this novel & i devoured it as soon as i got it (and SOBBED.) it feels like it has been a long time since we have been back with the Sandy Boys™️ but it all hit just as hard & perfectly as before.

“Alien Scars” reminds me so much of “Alien Heart” (#11, camille & varrow’s book & a comfort read) so that should tell you alone how much i loved it. this book was truly a beautiful ode of “FMC who firmly believes love is a choice you make every day” & “MMC who had never had the luxury to choose anything he really wanted for himself”

we see so much of Nasrin & Thaleo through the eyes of the others in the books leading up to this one/set in the deep sky. but you are not ready to see behind the stone exterior of Thaleo to his truly HEARTBREAKING inner monologue. if there is a picture next to “self-sacrificing” in the dictionary, it would be Thaleo — and he is not self-sacrificing/selfless in a self-righteous way, but in a genuine way of he was raised like this and he believes it is what needs to be done to be the best leader he can be for his people. his background & struggle to come to terms with wanting something (wanting Nasrin) for himself & feeling like it is a betrayal to his people is genuinely so heartbreaking

Nasrin — my beloved — i saw a lot of my perspective in her. her deep desire to retain some of her choices when so many had been taken from her, her soft nostalgic grief, and her deep belief in “love is a choice” resonated so hard with me. it was beautiful to see her come to terms with the attraction & feelings she had (& realize she might have been unfair in her initial judgments) & choose Thaleo before the mate bond happened.

I JUST LOVE THE SEA SANDS SERIES SO MUCH. i love **anything** that Ursa Dax writes!! i loved getting to see some of Fiona & Dalk’s story from the outside perspective, i loved more of Ox (that golden retriever KILLS me) & Zoren, and i am ROOTING for Tilly & Warrek so hard!!

i am truly like one minor breath of encouragement from rereading the entire series all over again, because i just love them SO MUCH.

„My beautiful one. Perfect creature. You don’t know how you haunt me.”

How can I even face this world after this beautiful book. This is the perfect example when people say I wish I could read it for the first time again. I just finish it and the emotional stamp it left on me; I hope it never leaves. Nasrin had such an impact on me. From her beautiful love of poems (I am a sucker for poems, especially Arabic poetry) to her love for the truth. She faces the world in a way that had captivated me and of course a certain Gahn. Gahn Thaleo surprised me in ways that I wished a male like him would truly exist. The tension and fire is since page one and I think they burned down my kindle and the kindle stickers and myself and the world. Their love for each other makes you swoon and Thaleo has THE YEARNING WE ALL CRAVE. I laughed and I cried.
Thank you Ursa for this Book. It was so nice to be back in this world and I now consider this book as my safe space. Off to re-read again! You love Alien Romance, YEARNING, words that will take your breath away that you have found with this one you next read.

Series: Fated mates of the Sea Sand Warlords #16
Rating: 3 stars - I liked it

Nasrin is at Gahn Thaleo’s mountain for the week as part of the deal made between him and the other Gahn’s. While Thaleo appears to favor her, she is keeping her distance because she doesn’t trust how manipulative he is. But as they get to know each other, Nasrin realizes that Thaleo has been taught to put being a Gahn over everything, including his own feelings.

After reading the previous books, I was eager to finally see Nasrin and Thaleo’s story since there has been so much tension between them for a while now. I really enjoyed this one. Thaleo may be manipulative but he is also an extremely protective and good Gahn. He has put his people above all else and this is the first time we see him start to rebel from that training. He struggles with wanting Nasrin for himself before the Great Vrika has actually given him the mate vision. I actually really enjoyed watching him open up and bend the rules a little bit.

Nasrin was a smart and determined woman who wasn’t going to let herself be swayed by the manipulative Gahn but quickly realized she is the only one who really treats him like a man, not a Gahn. I enjoyed learning more about Nasrin and her past, but did feel that she was a bit bare bones at times. She was the woman who was trying to grow things and create birth control, but in this she was just a woman falling for a man.I was really expecting to see a bit more of her geeky side in this.

The new deadly creature in this was fascinating and frankly, sounds terrifying. I enjoyed the tension it created with its sudden appearance and the dangers the humans and warriors faced. The battle to take the Borog down was intense and kept me hooked at the end. This world just constantly has really cool creatures, who are also really deadly usually.

Overall, I did enjoy this but was a bit disappointed in Nasrin’s character. I still enjoyed Thaleo and Nasrin’s relationship a lot but just wanted a bit more at times. I look forward to the next one.

TW: death of parents mentioned; child abuse mentioned; injuries and blood;

This is one of my favorite alien series. Sure, they’re all a bit similar because of the world and the mate bonds, but I tend to love the down bad heroes.

This one had a lot of potential because the hero was trained to be unfeeling and not have wants, and he is drawn to the heroine who thinks he’s cold and manipulative.

Unfortunately I was a little disappointed. They had some good moments, but I wanted to see a lot more of their time together. It felt like we were on the verge of something and never went totally deeper.

I still enjoyed it, and there was some action that made the last third go quickly.

Nasrin + Thaleo

We have been building up to this book a bit, and I was surprised to see it next in the series and not the final one according to the author note. Also the first 20% was the condensed version of the previous book, just from this couple's perspective so that was also disappointing. Once we got into the new stuff we were good.

Interested to see what new developments we get in this world, as we have been what felt like winding down but we still have a few couples to go. Just a couple women left but a handful of more alien men... new shipment coming in? Some of the women from the Alien God books? This series is ready for a shake up, so I'm hoping that's what will happen soon. It seems the author has been spending more time on her other cowboy series (which I am SO excited to start soon, I was wanting to finish what is out for the other 2)

I truly think Gahn Thaleo is my favorite.

I just enjoy this series. It’s one of my favorite romance series where it’s purely romance. No major plot going on but i just feel happy reading it.

I had high expectations for this one. Sadly it kind of dragged for me. I wished I would have seen them spend more time together. I think we got more of what was going around them than what was happening between them.

💜 “My beautiful one. Perfect creature. You don’t know how you haunt me.”
~~~
Nasrin is amazing! She’s kind, compassionate and so caring. And I loved that she knew what she wanted, and stood by her views. Even more, I liked that she was so brave and didn’t hesitate to face any dangers thrown her way. Nasrin is a wonderful woman and I loved her so, so much!
And then, there’s Thaleo - the cold, dangerous, stubborn, hard and calculating Gahn. He might appear always wanting control, but there’s so much more to him than meets the eye. Because, underneath his scarred and stoic facade is a male who would always put the needs and wants of his people before his own. And he feels so much, he’s just learned not to show anything. There are reasons he is the way he is, and my heart was breaking the more we learned about him. Even more, the Gahn is strong, considerate, observant and fiercely protective. Thaleo is one absolutely incredible male and I couldn’t help but adore every single thing about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Nasrin and Gahn Thaleo! Some of the new women are spending time between Gahn Errok and Gahn Thaleo’s people and every time Nasrin is in Thaleo’s territory he’s always watching her. Nasrin, however, is very unsure about the Gahn, so she decides to try to get to know him a bit better. And the more she discovers about the scarred Gahn, the clearer it becomes that he’s nothing like she expected. I absolutely adored Nasrin and Thaleo together! Their chemistry was incredible and I loved every moment they spent in each other’s company. All the tension, the longing, the differences between the two - every single thing was a delight to read. And the more they got to know one another the more their attraction couldn’t be denied or resisted. Nasrin and Gahn Thaleo’s journey towards happiness was not an easy one, especially with the unexpected danger threatening their people. But those two were absolutely perfect for each other and more than deserved to find happiness and love together!
Overall, Alien Scars is another absolutely remarkable addition to the series! It’s filled with so much emotion, action, danger, twists, humor (Oxriel had me cackling every time he opened his mouth!), passion and incredible characters.
I couldn’t put it down and absolutely loved every single page of it!
When a Gahn’s book ends up feeling like filler, you know something’s gone wrong.
I wanted depth, tension, and romance worthy of a Gahn’s story. Instead, I got gossip, recap, and zero chemistry.
DNF @ Chapter 10
I don’t think I’ve ever been this bored reading an alien romance. We’re 35% into this short book, and literally nothing has happened. The only “conflict” so far is a vague concern about a giant earthworm—the Borog—that might eventually threaten their home. But even that barely feels relevant.
Nasrin and Gahn Thaleo have had maybe a few paragraphs of alone time, but none of it feels meaningful, and there’s absolutely no chemistry between them. Their brief conversations are painfully dull. Most of the book so far has been Nasrin standing around gossiping with her friends about who’s banging who, clothes, fabric, food, and middle-school-level chatter about having friends. It’s just… boring.
Anything of supposed significance is just a rehash of things we already know from previous books—like the differences between Gahn Thaleo’s home and Gahn Errok’s—or the first four chapters simply rehashing the entire Vaklok competition from Gahn Thaleo’s and Nasrin’s POV. It didn’t add anything new or deepen my connection to either of them, and it just dragged the pacing down even more.
It makes no sense because this is a Gahn’s book—Gahn Thaleo’s book—which should be a big deal. This was our chance to really get to know him. And yes, we get some backstory from his childhood and how he was conditioned to be the way he is, but his love story, his happily ever after, even his struggle with it—at least in this first 35%—all just feels so flat.
Incredibly disappointing, and I just can’t keep going.
Did not enjoy.
My Sea Sand loving heart is so happy right now! Or should I say my Deep Sky loving heart? Ghan Thaleo and Nasrin are one couple that I've been highly anticipating for a while now and I was not disappointed!
My heart shattered and healed with Ghan Thaleo. His backstory was so heart wrenching and sad. It shaped him into a man that believed he needed to deny himself everything. That is, until Nasrin came along. I loved how Nasrin was like a healing balm to his soul. Watching them both fall slowly and steadily in love was so heartwarming to witness.
I also want to note that my heart was in my throat when Thaleo battled that creature. I'm so glad that the Varika saved him and that he got a mate vision worthy of what he needed to steady him.
This book brought me happy tears, smiles and all the laughs at Oxriel's golden retriever energy. Thaleo and Nasrin were both highly loveable characters that had both spicy and tender moments between them. Overall, I can't recommend this series enough!
I want to thank Ursa Dax for the opportunity to read this ARC! Sorry it took me a hot minute to read and review, but I'm so grateful all the same! My thoughts and opinions are my own in this review.
At this point in the series, some of the new women are spending time in the mountains & between Gahn Errok and Gahn Thaleo’s territory so that they can have the chance to be mates with either group. We have been in this area for a few books already so we know Gahn Thaleo is obsessed with Nassrin, always watching her. He’s a stubborn and hard man. Nassrin knows he watches her, but doesn’t really know what to make of it. Eventually she decides she wants to try to know him a little better. She doesn’t want a mate that’s only with her because the Vrika awakened their mate bond, she wants to be with someone because they really love and choose her. Thaleo was raised to be hard by his uncle. He always knew he’d be a Gahn and his uncle wanted him to put the needs of his people before himself in every situation. So he grew up keeping his own wants and needs to himself, including the need for love and comfort. This broke my fkng heart and I cried over him so many times 😭😭😭😭 I loved that Nassrin saw both sides of him and wanting to be that comfort for him & take care of him in the ways he takes care of everyone else! I loooove them!!!!
'But this hurt was only mine, too, and it was not my people's and therefore it was not real. There would be no healing for it. So I would simply sit there beside her and feel it and pretend that I didn't, I would blink fresh blood from my eye and say, "No, Gahn. I do not bleed."
Be still my beating heart! Alien scars hit me in the feels like a hangry borog. It had EVERYTHING and I only wish it could have been longer as I devoured every word far too quickly.
Gahn Thaleo has come across as a conniving and ruthless mofo in the previous books but, as ever, Ursa Dax redeems him in such a way that my heart bled for him and I wept like a baby.
You HAVE to read this book. Evocative, beautifully written, laugh-out-loud funny, achingly sweet, steamy hot, and gut-wrenching. It adds more layers to the world that Dax has created and I simply can't get enough of her stories.
Thaleo - 'She smelled like here and not here. She smelled like home.'
Me - 'Waahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!'
If you love alien romance then you need this book in your life!
It’s been so long since I’ve been to this planet with these aliens and women but it felt so good being back. And I love me a serious Ghan and Ghan Thaleo is just that. He does everything by the book and doesn’t even remotely crack a smile while doing it. He also comes with a tragic backstory that once revealed stirs all kinds of feelings and happenings between him and the human Nasrin. I can’t say much for her. She was rather dry if you ask me but I loved Thaleo enough to read this book in 2 sittings. Plus you gotta love Oxriel and he makes many appearances. Not a whole lot seemed to happen in this book and their romance moved rather quickly, but again, I love me a stoic grump so I guess that kept me interested. I also liked Ghan Thaleo’s right hand man. It’s mentioned he may get a book and I’m quite interested in that. He seems fun. I also like that in this book, Ghan Thaleo “chose” Nasrin. It wasn’t all about the mate bond. They grew to like each other all on their own and that was important to them. Hope we aren’t waiting long for the next book. I do love this world.
This might be my favorite of this series so far!! I didn’t think anyone could knock Varrow or Fallo (they’re tied) out of my top spot but Thaleo stole my heart!! And watching Nasrin, kind compassionate Nasrin, fall in love with an alien who yearnnnnnnns even if he doesn’t want to was perfection! There’s a reason I’ve read every single book Ursa Dax has out, Ursa just DOES IT EVERY TIME 😩👏🏻 if you like a big seemingly cold but secretly (but it was obvious to everyone else) obsessed alien man who has never been kissed and a kind but guarded FMC who makes it her mission to dig into who he is - you’re gonna eat this uppppp just like me. I can’t wait for what comes next! Also I’m loudly in the pro Oxriel corner and can’t wait to see that big goofy himbo get his HEA 🥹
Since Thaleo is my favorite male character in the series, I waited for this book for way too long… and now that it’s finally here, I’m torn.
On one hand, it’s been a while since I laughed and enjoyed devouring a book in a single day (I’m a total fan of Ox and his appearances — I beg and plead for his book soon). But at the same time, I didn’t want it to end, and it felt too short.
In terms of world-building, I loved the agricultural aspect. We already knew that, unlike the desert, here we had beds, bathrooms, and water! But adding sheep for milk and wool, eggs, and insect silk really expands the possibilities.
The new threat intrigued me; it even made me wonder if certain gods influenced the mutation… now I need 20 new books, Ursa! Please!!
All I can say is that I’ll have to reread the previous 15 books just to survive the wait for more…
"My beautiful one. Perfect creature. You don’t know how you haunt me.”
One more incredibly good addiction to this series!
This universe is rich, imaginative and utterly addictive and it shows plenty in Alien scars.
Nasrin is kind, compassionate ,caring and fiercely loyal. She went toe to toe with Thaleo and stood by her beliefs.
Thaleo is calculating,dangerous and hard but the Gahn is way more that he shows.
He has a hidden side where he cares to much and does everything to assure his people thrive.A lesson hard earned that left him scarred.
He feels split in half between his duty and the growing love for Nasrin...
And a new and deadly danger threathening them...
As always Ursa Dax awes me ,even after 16 books in the series keeps the interest high and fills all my expectations.
Beautifully written, perfectly balanced,well executed and unputdownable!
“You’re like that pool I just put my hands into. Cold to the point of numbing. Too deep and dark to see the bottom. You manipulate and you use people without showing your true intentions. So yes, Gahn Thaleo, you offend me.” Just like that pool, she said. The same one she’d plunged both hands into anyway. Even knowing that it was deep and dark and cold and that she could not see the bottom.
This was one of the most romantic swoon worthy books I have read in a while, and probably the most romantic from this author ever. Instead of a fated mates romance, it feels like a romance that just so happens to have fated mates and it really works in this book. A really great and surprising story for such a long series.
My only complaints are that this book is really light on the spice and it is a slow-burn.
4 & 1\2 fabulous 🌟's for Alien Scars🌟💖🔥
This is Nasrin and Ghan Thaleo 's story. Thaleo, has been they enemy/gray character in the last few books. He came off as scary and unfeeling someone who would do anything to protect his people even if it hurt others. Until Nasrin. Nasrin doesn't understand why she finds Thaleo attractive. He frustrates her offends her and makes her angry, but then does it says something that sets her heart fluttering. Is determined to find out why he's so cold and unfeeling? What she finds changes everything she Ever believed to be true about him and she's determined to give him th love and acceptance that they both need. Its awesome to be back with the Sea sand warriors and I'm happy to hear we WILK be back soon. Excellent series excellent author!🔥💖🌟💖🔥🌟🔥💖🌟💖💖🔥🌟🔥💖🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟 highly recommend🔥🌟💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖
Nasrin doesn’t want to want Thaleo, mainly due to interactions with him in the past. Thaleo feels drawn to Nasrin but he is Gahn and a Gahn has no wants of his own. For Thaleo there is duty, the tribe he must put above all else and nothing for him but he wants. Thaleo wants Nasrin even though he feels he should not. Nasrin does not want to like Thaleo but she gets to know him, not the Gahn but the man. However, even though she likes him, desires him, she wants love, not chosen by force that dictates the actions of the Gahn but real and true emotion. To be together they’ll each have to open up in ways they never have before and face a threat no one else has ever seen. Told from dual POV. This is deep in the series, though it can be read as a stand alone.
Gahn Thaleo and Nasrin’s story was one I was anticipating pretty eagerly considering their interactions in the previous book. Thaleo was a cold, manipulative jerk to everyone including Nasrin forcing a deal where all single humans are to spend equal amounts of time between the tribes. He’s been obsessed with Nasrin from the moment he saw her and she was drawn to him but did not like him at all. Slowly they grow to understand each other but almost bail when they start to develop feeling because of the possibility of the Vrika either separating them or “forcing” them together. Turns out part of the reason that Nasrin and Thaleo work together is that they’re both annoying self sacrificing. Hopefully now mated they’ll be more careful with themselves.
Alien Scars
I love returning to this world and I so appreciate that the author gave us this MMC's story. We've been wondering about him for several books and I couldn't wait to see why he was the way he was. Of course, there's childhood trauma from a shitty uncle. Here's a small taste of what he was taught,
“...because I was Gahn and as Gahn, I had disappeared. I had no wants. I had no needs.”
I thought a lot about how his personality got divided and I liked the resolution at the end.
The author did a good job of having Fiona and Dalk’s story run parallel to this. I like Warrek’s boldness with Tilly. The two little girls were a great touch as was the grumpy Linnet.
For those of us that are fans of the Sea Sand series, Thaleo and Nasrin’s story was one that was eagerly anticipated. I’m a sucker for longing and desperate, unyielding love. That “I’d kill for her” type of stuff. Also I love a good virginal hero. I feel like I got it all in this book. We start off unsure of Thaleo’s intentions with Nasrin, but that is quickly rectified. Thaleo is obsessed with Nasrin and I’m here for it. Really enjoyed this newest release in the series and I’m eagerly awaiting the next.
My favorite still
This series will never stop being my favorite alien planet boys and human women. Thaleo was as good under that hard shell as I knew he would be. I've been in a book slump, Dax count not have released this at a better time. I have enjoyed every single book in this series and hope she never gets tired of writing more. We need a new batch of women to keep matching them up! I'm hoping to see more of Warrek. But sweetie Oxriel needs a girl yet too, and Zoren. I love them all! ❤️
