Willoughby: Book II - War & Peace

While working on War & Peace, the author asked his friend, an AI expert, to review it. His friend, wanting to quickly connect the characters' disparate lives, had his renowned Foundational Artificial Intelligence Technology, Heuristics—a large language model—to analyze the entire book. Faith

"Please excuse my straightforward assessment. Although Willoughby's pages may hum with passionate voices for human readers, I take a different approach. My large language model processes data based on its statistical significance. My algorithms identify patterns and generate narratives from diverse fragments of information. My analysis will highlight the most salient points."

It did just that. However, to this man—well-known as an expert in his field, a teacher with a PhD in computer science and years of developing machine learning algorithms to process complex datasets, identify patterns, and deliver autonomous solutions—the original narrative’s twists and turns remained somewhat beyond his grasp.

In War & Peace, a nation rises to an unanticipated calling and is greeted by a baby boy's first tears. O Canada! A nurse from up north unmasks a long-obscured truth in a stained-glass window at Saint-Chéron de Coulombs and later hears about Willoughby's mythic monsters and unknown depths. Consumerism blooms from war's death and ashes. A young mother unpacks unanticipated wealth and unexpected visions. A young girl from the Northeast Kingdom meets Robert Frost. A radio host interviews a former member of Lionel Trains' board about the Hollywood Ten. An art history professor leaves his Parisian menagerie for Southern France. A talented ophthalmic surgeon buys a parrot and is haunted by a stolen book. A young woman named Bill, along with two of her students, put on a play.

Through these events, we gain insight into the world that our protagonist, Lena Hart, has inherited. It's the world of the pre- and post-World War II eras, a period marked by technological advancements and cultural shifts. In contrast to a world at odds, Lake Willoughby is an almost mythical place where Lena and her childhood friend Aaron begin their lives, drawn into the profound mysteries of its natural beauty. As readers, they explore secrets of the human experience. As storytellers, they attempt to reinvent the world, pushing ever forward into adulthood. As they prepare to leave for college, their apprehension about being apart is met with their fear of intimacy.
