The Promises We Made

Rate this book
When tragedy strikes Sunny Mason’s life, urging her to stay on the run from all the what-if’s, she finds herself pulled to Boston on a travel nurse assignment. Through unlikely encounters, she meets a series of people connected by some invisible string, forging a family among friends. Sunny learns quickly that when Tyler Michael Caddell, the brother of her newfound best friend, comes into her life, any plans she had for being on the run are about to be rewritten.

Financial firm heir by day, personal hitman by night, Tyler is a predator with purpose driven by the hunt. The great divide in his personality could very well be the downfall of the one thing that has made his heart start beating differently—Sunny Mason. The girl with a fire that’s somehow lit up all the dark corners of his heart. With this new light in his life, he’s exposed to all the human fragments he’s kept buried in a grave since he was a child, struggling to understand how to be both for the ones he loves.

While the time of her stay in the city dwindles, Tyler and Sunny find themselves in a limbo of friendship that crosses boundaries, connections embroidering deeper than intended, and promises that teeter on being broken.

That is, until this hitman learns why she’s on the run, and is ready to find out exactly who that is, so he can put them in their grave.

This book had me in a chokehold. The yearning, the banter, the suspense. Every ending to a chapter made me want to keep reading. To say I’m impatient for the next book would be an understatement. Incredible read!

This story completely pulled me in. Watching Sunny run from a painful past and slowly begin healing in Boston felt raw and deeply human. The friendships, the quiet moments of growth, and her intense connection with Tyler made the journey feel so real. Tyler especially captivated me—powerful on the surface, but clearly fighting darkness within himself. Their chemistry is magnetic and emotionally gripping. Just when I felt fully invested in their story, the ending hit with a cliffhanger that left me stunned and desperate for the next book.

4.5/5⭐️

Okay I absolutely LOVED this book. The banter, the found family, the TENSION! 10/10.

Sunny is running from her past and has some dark secrets. She is a travel nurse and takes an assignment across the country. While on assignment she happens to make a sort of instant best friend.

Her new best friend takes her under her wing and introduces her to her “found family”. Which also includes her hot brother, Tyler. Who instantly has a thing for Sunny.

The tension between these two was INSANE for most the book!

Tyler is the heir to a financial empire and is expected to marry who his parents tell him to. But he is willing to throw it all away for Sunny.

The only thing driving me nuts was how hard Sunny pushed Tyler away! Then once he pretended to “move on” from her to get her to realize what she wanted (which was also infuriating), she wanted him back.

At the end of the book Sunny’s past finally catches up with her and THEN ENDS ON A CLIFFHANGER.

I am dying for book 2.

Do you indulge in the morally gray but also LOVE love? Well, then this is the book for you. I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to beta read The Promises We Made. I will say that it’s outside of my typical genre but I enjoyed it so much. The book had me feeling nostalgic in the face of found family and relating to the trauma responses of the main female character. The good news: time heals. Although, there is a bit of a cliffhanger so I’m already highly anticipating the next book to find out what else time will do. The characters are complex, the storyline is both shocking and satisfying, and the spice is spicing. I absolutely cannot wait to have a physical copy of this in hand. Note: Definitely recommend reviewing the content warnings before reading. Enjoy!

DNF at 20%. Th3 beginning was so repetitive. I couldn’t bang my head harder at the wall to get through it. And then the immediate “baby” he said to her made me puke. Also Sam was the most obnoxious character. This book actually just pissed me off. Good potential went to waste. Sorry.

Get you someone that looks at you the way Tyler looks at Sunny… because WOW.
I felt their connection from that very first meeting, and I swear I was hooked instantly. The author did such an incredible job writing these characters, all of them. As I read, it genuinely felt like I was part of their little family.

I was so emotionally invested in this book. I teared up when they cried, I felt happy when they were happy, and I held my breath when things got dark. This story is dark, spicy, and deeply emotional, and it takes you on a ride you’re not prepared for. And then that ending??? The cliffhanger of all cliffhangers. I’m going to need book two stat because the way this one ended 😳

And this quote from Tyler… my heart:

“If this is all the time you and I are allowed to have, if this is it, then it’s worth it, too. And I’d do my life over again so I could keep having this small portion with you.”

If you love emotional, character-driven, high-stakes romance with heat and heart, add this one to your TBR immediately.

WOAH!

The Promises We Made was a dark romance, not too intense, but with just the right amount of spice. Wow, this book takes you through every emotion possible. There were moments where I was so frustrated with Sunny, then immediately caught myself thinking, ugh… but her past. You really can understand why she reacts the way she does, even when it drives you a little crazy.

And Tyler? Why can’t more men be like him 😭 He is absolute perfection! His flaws, darkness, and all. Even his darker side is somehow completely lovable.

Without giving any spoilers… that cliffhanger?? I did not appreciate it LOL. I was literally sitting there like, no, this cannot be happening. Then I found out book two isn’t even out yet and there’s no release date?! I was speechless. The amount of unanswered questions is criminal, and when Tyler said he forgot his gun, my anxiety hit an all-time high.

T.S. Cap, we need book two immediately. Please. 😩📚

I don’t even know where to begin,

this book was by far the best book I have ever read! I will forever have a special place in my heart for this book! T.S you wrote the most amazing, beautiful, raw, spicy, delicious book I ever read. THANK YOU!!!

Spoilers!!!

You wrote a miscarriage so beautifully, speaking from someone who had two before my rainbow babies. You put love and thought behind something so unimaginable and so raw. The way Sam told sunny and Sam trusted her enough to share her story was everything.

Thank you for writing something that isn’t talked about enough!

The love I have for sunny and Tyler is out of this world I will forever think about them!! I’m so so in love with them! I need and want more! Please give me more!

For anyone who wants dark, spicy, emotional and a love roller coaster this book is for you!!

If I could give it 10 stars I would!!

Ermmm I really need to start reading the blurb!!! A cliffhanger?!?!
TS Cap you have some explaining to do!

I abso bloody lutely loved this book.
It’s starts off slowed pace, girl meets boy whilst she is dealing with trauma, he is also fighting his own demons.
The first part of the books is character building and then it picks up the pace!
I don’t like leaking spoilers as I love going into books blind but the spice is spicing and the plot is soooo good! I would say it more morally grey and definitely worth a read.
Cannot wait for the second book! 🖤

Just want to add I don’t usually take a month to read a book I have been recovering from surgery!

If you love a morally grey man. Grumpy to sunshine male character. Dual perspective. Love from first sight. Then this book is for you. Plot with great spice. (check your triggers) the spice doesn’t take away from the plot. The chapters kept me glued and never wanting to put it down. Each character was detailed and not just thrown in. Loved the family aspect to the friend group. I also loved the shorter chapters. The ending left on a cliff hanger and had my jaw dropped. I need more! Amazing work for a first time author. I will be recommending! I cannot wait for the second book.

I don’t even know how to put into words how utterly amazing this book was. It hooked me from start to finish. Couldn’t put it down even though I tried. The tension. The anticipation. The way the characters slowly find comfort in one another despite the ups and down. Everything was just chefs kiss. That ending? Yeah, I’m going to need the next book STAT.

This book brought out all of the feels for me. The emotion and bond created between this found family is everything. Once I started reading I was sucked right into their world needing to know what happens next. Sadly, I was caught off guard with the cliffhanger. I thought this book was a standalone. Hopefully book 2 will be out soon and I remember to look for it!

The Promises We Made kept me emotionally invested from start to finish, even though it definitely tested my patience. The romance and emotional tension were strong, and I was genuinely intrigued by the story and characters.

That said, the constant back-and-forth — staying, leaving, then repeating — felt dragged out, especially for a book over 500 pages. At times it seemed like the plot stalled instead of moving forward.

Still, the emotional pull and unanswered questions kept me hooked, and despite its flaws, I found myself wanting more. I’ll most likely be picking up book two to see where the story goes.

Recommended for readers who enjoy slow-burn romance and emotional angst, but those who prefer tighter pacing may struggle.

I want to start by saying this book was my first in the dark romance genre, so I am not very experienced on the subject. However...

This book was beautifully written and you could tell the author took her time to get to know these characters before relaying their stories to us. Finding something to relate to in characters who have experiences you are unfamiliar with can be difficult; but I still found myself managing to relate to the characters in little ways.

I love a man who pines, and from the start, that was Tyler. I loved reading his internal thoughts about Sunny. Then to watch it progress was even better. I was giddy, when reading Tyler flirt with Sunny, his warmth with her such a stark contrast to the cold we see with his parents.

I will say, some of the darker spicey scenes were a bit heavy for me (but that is just personal preference). I would recommend reading the warnings page thoroughly before reading!

In the end, I can't wait for the next book because I want more of these characters and their stories!

I had the privilege of reading this book from the very beginning and it was a whirlwind. I’ve enjoyed watching this book come to life with the plot, but most importantly the characters. I’m patiently waiting for the author to be done with the sequel so I can piece together everything. I love the family in this book specifically and the banter between them. DEFINITELY read preorder this book!! But also the edginggggg is amazing.

I loved this at first and wanted to continue loving it but …over 500 pages for that cliffhanger? It felt predictable and repetitive and then it just started to drag. 2/5
