After university, she became a reporter for a Japanese newspaper based in Sydney before moving back to Japan to work as a magazine editor in Tokyo. After the first book 'Hot Chocolate on Thursday', I thought I knew exactly what to expect so I went into this one with cautious expectations especially since it continues the format of its predecessor of twelve interconnected vignettes. But where the first book used colors as its theme, this one follows the twelve-month calendar.

From the synopsis, I inferred that the Matcha Café would be the crux of the matter. Every Monday, Marble Café closes its usual business and transforms into a Matcha Café, inviting people to slow down, reconnect with themselves, and let the slight bitterness of matcha soothe the weight they are carrying. And so, I imagined each chapter would revolve around the people who wandered into this little Monday ritual. Lamentably, that was not quite the case.

Apart from the opening chapter, the Matcha Café itself barely takes the spotlight. Most stories instead follow people connected by chance encounters, passing conversations, or familiar faces from the previous book. The matcha felt almost like an afterthought, and I kept wondering why the novel was marketed around it when so few characters actually experienced it firsthand.

As the chapters fanned out, I found myself searching almost desperately for something substantial; some lesson or emotional breakthrough hidden beneath stories that initially felt like they stuck in a rut; it bordered on being insignificant. Everything was incredibly subtle. The chapters were short, the emotions restrained, and I honestly thought I had already decided on my rating before reaching the halfway point.

But boohoo me because this is Michiko Aoyama after all, so by all means, this novel would still take the wind out of my sails.

Somewhere around the middle; almost imperceptibly, everything began to connect. Ultimately, the Matcha Café was never meant to be the destination. It was simply one thread in a much larger tapestry about people whose lives brush against one another in ways they may never fully realize. Just like in one of the chapters, the cafe owner Maestro put forward the notion that none of us are ever connected to just one person. Every relationship exists because countless others came before it. Someone helps you because someone once helped them, and the thread stretches further than we will ever be able to trace.This novel is pretty much THAT.

By the final chapter, the reason behind the Monday Matcha Café finally comes into view, bringing the entire novel quietly full circle. Suddenly, what had once felt disconnected became remarkably cohesive after Kippei reunited with red check scarf woman at his Fukui-do opening branch in Tokyo. That moment alone completely changed how I looked at everything that came before.

The part I found myself holding onto was not the matcha (though I do love me a cup of matcha on Monday), but rather its deepened theme on connection with people and gratitude. This novel prompt someone's passing words or small acts of kindness can unknowingly become another person's turning point. This series continues to remind me that there are no supporting characters in life. Every person is carrying a story of their own, and sometimes we are part of it without ever realizing.

Somewhere along the way, I had partially forgotten what happened in the previous book, but I was still able to enjoy this one without any trouble. And there were enough connections to the first book to make recognizing familiar faces genuinely fun especially seeing a certain character from the first book reappear in a new light while also being able to read as standalone.

All things considered, this is not my favorite Michiko Aoyama novel nor is it as immediately moving as some of her other works. Yet once again, she found a gentle way to make me reflect on the parts of life I want to cherish a little more. And unlike the first book, this time, the series truly fell into place.

Michiko Aoyama has truly become a comfort author for me and I loved spending time in Matcha on Monday as much as enjoyed Hot Chocolate on Thursday~

Starting at the Marble Café that’s hosting a special matcha event, we traverse across Tokyo and Kyoto, encountering a flurry of people in the serial short story style.

Sometimes when it comes to serial short stories, it can be easy for me to lose focus or feel unattached to the individual characters, but with the Marble Café world, I found the singular passing chapters of ordinary people living their ordinary lives incredibly soothing to read🥺

My only nitpick is that I wish there was more matcha involved and more time spent at the café! But I still loved my time with this one ><

Es una lectura que avanza como un pequeño calendario emocional donde cada historia representa un mes y se entrelazan en encuentros, conexiones y casualidades.
Confieso que no ha sido una lectura fácil para mí por la cantidad de diferentes personajes; a ratos me he perdido un poco entre nombres y conexiones y por eso no he terminado de conectar del todo con la historia en conjunto, aún así, la primera y la última historia han sido sin duda mis favoritas.
Es un libro cozy ideal para leer una tarde tranquila con un buen matcha entre las manos 🍵.

J’ai fini le livre avant hier. J’ai préféré mettre 3,5 étoiles car je suis assez mitigée. C’est mon premier livre d’elle et je dois dire que sa plume est vraiment tendre, douce et poétique. On se sent bien dans son univers.

Malgré ça, j’ai trouvé que la fin des chapitres était un peu trop hâtive à mon goût. Je trouvais que les personnages changeaient de point de vue peut être trop facilement et trop soudainement.

Néanmoins j’ai beaucoup apprécié cet univers tendre ainsi le concept des liens tissés a mesure que l’on avance dans les chapitres. J’ai déjà d’autres livres d’elle et j’ai hâte de les lire, en espérant que les thématiques abordées seront plus approfondies et inviteront à une réflexion plus longue et plus profonde !

ถือว่าเป็นการหยิบเล่มมาเปิดปีได้ดีมาก ๆ เลย เล่มนี้ย้ำเตือนให้เราได้เข้าใจถึง timing ของหนังสือ ว่าแต่ละเล่มก็คงมีช่วงเวลาของมันเอง right book at the right time ช่างเป็นความรู้สึกที่ดีจัง

เล่มนี้มีความหลังกับเรา เนื่องจากเราเคยอ่าน #โกโก้อุ่นๆกับคุณในวันพฤหัสฯ จากนักเขียนคนเดียวกันแล้วรู้สึกเฉย ๆ มาก ค่อนไปทางไม่ค่อยชอบ ไม่เก็ต ไม่อุ่น ไม่มีมวลอะไรเลย พอเล่มนี้ออกมา หลาย ๆ คนที่เคยคุยด้วยว่าเฉย ๆ กับโกโก้บอกว่าเล่มนี้ดีขึ้น ส่วนคนที่ชอบโกโก้ ก็ชอบเล่มนี้มากขึ้นไปอีก เราก็เลยคิดว่าจะลองอีกสักที

เล่มนี้ยังอยู่ใน setting หลักที่มาร์เบิ้ลคาเฟ่ที่ตั้งอยู่ริมน้ำ มีต้นซากุระเรียงรายอยู่เต็มไปหมด (ภาพจินตนาการในหัวคือบรรยากาศดีมาก ๆ อยากไปคาเฟ่นี้เลย) หากแต่ว่าเรื่องสั้นในเล่มนี้ถูกแบ่งออกเป็นทั้งหมด 12 เรื่อง 12 ช่วงเวลาใน 12 เดือนของทั้งปี ตั้งแต่เดือนมกราคมถึงธันวาคม เป็นเรื่องราวของผู้คนที่ถูกเชื่อมโยงกันด้วยอะไรสักอย่างที่เกี่ยวข้องกับมาร์เบิ้ลคาเฟ่แห่งนี้

ตัวละครในเรื่องนี้ค่อนข้างหลากหลาย ประกอบหลายอาชีพ หลายช่วงอายุ ตั้งแต่เด็กไปจนถึงสูงวัย เราว่าพอเป็นเรื่องสั้นที่เล่าในมุมมองของตัวละครที่แตกต่างออกไป มันทำให้เราได้สัมผัสถึงมุมมองที่หลากหลาย ความคิดที่แตกต่างกันในแต่ละช่วงวัย อีกทั้งยังมุมมองที่มีต่อตัวสามี/ภรรยา/ย่า/หลาน และอื่น ๆ ทำให้เราได้เรียนรู้ว่าจริง ๆ แล้วคนในช่วงวัยนั้น ๆ เค้าคิดอะไรอยู่กันแน่ มีมุมมองยังต่อสิ่งนี้ยังไง มันแอบสะท้อนตัวเราเบา ๆ ในบางบท ทำให้เราได้กลับมาฉุกคิดอะไรบางอย่างได้

เวลาอ่านนิยายแปลญี่ปุ่น มันจะมี love-hate อยู่บางจุดตรงที่ญี่ปุ่นเป็นสังคม high context ที่ทำอะไรก็พิถีพิถัน พูดอ้อมไปมา ใส่ใจรายละเอียดจนบางทีก็รู้สึกเยอะเกินไป แต่ในขณะเดียวกัน (เราว่าอาจจะอ่านถูกจังหวะ) รายละเอียดเล็ก ๆ น้อย ๆ ตามรายทางเหล่านี้กลับทำให้เรารู้สึก appreciate ต่อสิ่งเล็ก ๆ รอบตัวมาก ๆ การเอาใจใส่ของวัฒนธรรมญี่ปุ่นนั้นทำให้คนนอก (อย่างเรา ๆ ที่ไม่ได้เข้าใจถึงวัฒนธรรมของญี่ปุ่นอย่างลึกซึ้งนัก) รู้สึกถึงความรักที่เหล่าตัวละครมอบให้แก่สิ่งที่พวกเค้ารัก ไม่ว่าจะเป็นตัวบุคคลหรือแม้แต่การประกอบอาชีพอะไรบางอย่างที่พวกเค้ารักและลุ่มหลง

เล่มนี้สำหรับเรา ถามว่าได้อะไรไหม ก็คงได้ความอบอุ่นใจเบา ๆ สไตล์ญี่ปุ่น อีกอย่างที่เราสัมผัสได้คือ focus point ที่เล่มนี้ต้องการจะสื่อก็คือ “อยากทำอะไรก็ทำ” — แค่นั้นเลย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการประกอบอาชีพที่เรารัก ถึงแม้ใครจะไม่เห็นคุณค่า แต่ถ้าเรามองเห็น มันก็แค่นั้นเอง ไม่จำเป็นต้องไปใส่ใจคำพูดของคนอื่นมากนัก ทำอย่างที่เราอยากทำ เป็นอย่างที่เราอยากเป็น อยากไปไหน อยากกินอะไร อยากทำอะไร ถ้าไม่เดือดร้อนคนอื่นก็ทำไปเถอะนะ มันง่ายแค่นั้นเอง (ถึงชีวิตจริงจะไม่ได้ง่ายขนาดนั้นอะนะ แง)

คนซ่อมมือถือที่ชอบเทคโนโลยี คนขายชุดชั้นในเย็บมือที่ทำตามความชอบตัวเอง คุณลุงที่ลาออกจากงานรายได้ดีมาขายหนังสือมือสอง เด็กสาวที่เลือกประกอบอาชีพเล่านิทานแทนที่จะสานต่อร้านขนม เจ้าแมวที่ไม่เข้าใจว่ามนุษย์จะดิ้นรนไปทำไม คุณย่าที่กลัวว่าขนมญี่ปุ่นจะเลือนหายไปตามกาลเวลา เด็กหนุ่มที่ไม่กล้าทำอะไรเพราะกลัวว่าจะแตกต่างจากสังคม — และอีกหลาย ๆ ตัวละคร เราว่าทุกคนต่างมีความชอบเป็นของตัวเอง และถ้าหากได้ทำในสิ่งที่ชอบ หลงใหล ก็น่าจะทำให้การใช้ชีวิตนั้นมีความสุขยิ่งขึ้น ถึงแม้มันจะไม่ราบรื่น หรือจริง ๆ อาจจะไม่ได้ชอบสิ่งนั้นจริง ๆ แต่แค่การได้เริ่มต้นลงมือทำ แค่นั้นก็ถือว่าดีเป็นไหน ๆ แล้ว

เราว่าบรรยากาศที่เหมาะที่สุดในการอ่านเล่มนี้คือช่วงต้นปีแบบนี้ ตอนที่เรารู้สึกถึง fresh start (ถึงจะเป็นแค่นามธรรมแต่ก็รู้สึก) ตอนที่ยังไม่มีอะไรมากวนใจ อ่านในวันหยุด ช่วงเช้าตรู่ แดดอ่อน ๆ เงียบ ๆ คนเดียวท่ามกลางบรรยากาศที่เงียบสงบ โอ้ย ดีจังเล้ยยยย — เราหยิบเล่มนี้ติดมือไปอ่านที่คาเฟ่ใกล้ ๆ บ้านในช่วงวันหยุด แต่อาจจะเป็นเพราะวันหยุด หรือจริง ๆ แล้วคาเฟ่สมัยนี้นั้นเต็มไปด้วยคนที่ต้องการมาถ่ายรูปสวย ๆ มันเลยวุ่นวายและทำให้เราแอบรู้สึกเสียบรรยากาศหน่อย ๆ อยากได้คาเฟ่ที่ไม่มีคนมาถ่ายรูป ต่างคนต่างนั่งละเลียดเครื่องดื่ม ขนม หรือทำงาน อ่านหนังสือเงียบ ๆ สงสัยต้องไปมาร์เบิ้ลคาเฟ่ละมั้ง

ข้อติติงมีนิดหน่อยตรงที่เราแอบเจอ typo บางจุด สะกดผิด เขียนผิด และลืมเว้นวรรค ที่เราไม่โอเคสุดคือการแปลคำว่า “ย่า” เป็น “ยาย” ตอนที่อ่านจบเรื่องหนึ่งแล้วเชื่อมโยงไปอีกเรื่องหนึ่ง เราคิดนานมากว่าตัวละครที่กล่าวถึงคือใคร จนอ่านไปนิดหน่อยก็นึกขึ้นได้ว่าจริง ๆ แล้วตัวละครนั้นควรถูกเรียกว่าคุณย่ามากกว่าสิ — เข้าใจว่าคงมีแต่ภาษาไทยที่เรียก ย่า/ยาย ภาษาญี่ปุ่นก็มีคำเดียว ภาษาอังกฤษเองก็มีคำเดียว นอกเสียจากว่าเติมคำว่า paternal or maternal grandmother เข้าไป แต่เอาเข้าจริงก็ไม่มีใครพูดกัน อย่างน้อย ๆ อยากให้ทั้งนักแปล พิสูจน์อักษร บก และ สนพ ช่วยใส่ใจรายละเอียดในส่วนนี้เพิ่มเติม (แต่ถ้าหากเราเข้าใจผิดจริง ๆ แล้วคำแปลว่าคุณยายถูกแล้ว ท้วงติงได้เลยนะคะ)

Douce lecture japonaise comme je les aime 🤍
C’est un roman feel good, sans prise de tête, et réconfortant. J’ai beaucoup apprécié ses personnages et la manière dont ils sont interconnectés. On suit chaque mois de l’année un nouveau personnage, lié au précédent, jusqu’à ce que la boucle se referme.

Ma citation favorite, qui résume bien ce roman : "Si on remontait le fil, on découvrirait une multitude de personnes connectées entre elles à un moment spécifique. Si l’une d’elles n’avait pas été là, nous ne serions pas au point où nous en sommes aujourd’hui. Chaque rencontre est le prolongement d’une chaîne ininterrompue d’inconnus."

ยังคงเป็นเรื่องสั้น 12 เรื่อง คราวนี้ใช้ธีมของ 12 เดือน กล่าวถึงเรื่องราวของแต่ละคนในช่วงเวลา ฤดูกาล หรือเทศกาลต่างๆ ตามเดือนนั้นๆ อ่านแล้วทำให้มองชีวิตในมุมบวกมากขึ้น

Foi muito fofo! Este livro demonstra o poder de ligação entre várias pessoas, de situações imprevisíveis e de encontros inéditos! Mostra como é que o facto de duas pessoas se conhecerem, pode fazer com que tantas outras se conheçam pelo meio!

Amei porque me senti numa bolha de aconchego no coração enquanto lia sobre várias personagens que, de alguma forma, se interligam! É isto que eu amo neste género 💚

Les liens humains

« Un lundi parfum matcha » est dans la digne lignée du « Jeudi saveur chocolat ».

On y suit des personnages qui ont tous un lien, un amour du thé, mais surtout des moments de doute dans leur vie.

C’est une lecture légère, qui vous permet de vous évader avec un petit parfum du Japon. Ce roman choral nous offre à voir des personnages simples, qui se perdent un peu avant de se retrouver eux-mêmes. Alors que les sujets ne sont pas abordés avec légèreté, ils ne sont pas non plus rendus lourds et tristes.

On ressort de cette lecture en étant revigoré, comme si ce roman nous offrait un nouveau départ, une sorte d’introspection à l’aide de différents personnages qui vous prennent par la main pour vous emmener dans un café où il fait bon de vivre, un thé sur la table devant vous.

12 chapitres, 12 nouvelles pour les 12 mois de l'année sont au menu de ce joli recueil de Michiko Aoyama. Elle nous embarque pour un voyage poétique au Japon, entre Tokyo et Kyoto, à travers différentes histoires de personnages qui se croisent et s'entrecroisent.

Le départ du ce fil rouge c'est un petit café plutôt confidentiel, et à partir de là, on va suivre quelques moments de vie de différents personnages qui nous partagent leurs pensées ou un moment clé de leur vie. Cela nous permet de découvrir de nombreux éléments et traditions de la culture japonaise, créant ainsi un véritable moment de lecture cocooning.

Nie jest to zdecydowanie książka, którą poleciłabym ze względu na język lub narrację. Na początku sądziłam, że nie polubię się z nią ze względu na styl, który przypominał mi styl z wczesnej podstawówki. Naprawdę dawno nie czytałam czegoś, co byłoby tak prosto i kiepsko napisane. Zastanawiałam się, czy to kwestia przekładu, ale sądzę, że mimo wszystko tłumaczka starała się, jak mogła. Później było lepiej. Opowiadając o formie tej książki, mówiłam wszystkim, że to taki wagonik, co wydało mi się świetną sprawą. Wagonik, tzn. poboczna postać z jednego opowiadania stawała się główną postacią w kolejnym opowiadaniu. Nie mam pojęcia, jak naprawdę nazywa się ten zabieg. Po prostu mi przypominało to połączone ze sobą wagony w jednym długim pociągu. Nie zachwyciła mnie ta książka, ale podobały mi się trzy opowiadania: "Zastukałam kołatką", "Letnie odpędzanie złego" i "A kangur wciąż czeka".

Matcha on Monday is one of those cozy reads that you can just escape into. Whilst we only see each character briefly they all shine bright, how they connected was seamless and they all held equal space. There are 12 stories in total, at the end I was satisfied and felt we had come full circle and smiled. Each chapter held some beautiful words of wisdom, it was poetic in an understated way. Overall I really enjoyed this read. I found it easy to get into and would love to see this animated. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy. This is a voluntary review of my own thoughts.

Cada relato de sentía muy presente, cada personaje muy real. En todo momento sentí ganas de estar en Japón oliendo el café y el matcha.
Me gustó como se van intercalando las historias brincando entre tiempo futuro y pasado.
El final muy lindo y esperanzador.

W Marble Café matcha staje się czymś więcej niż napojem - daje ukojenie i pomaga odnaleźć siłę do zmian. Raz w miesiącu kawiarnia zaprasza zagubionych gości na wyjątkową degustację, która przynosi spokój i nadzieję. To ciepła opowieść o nowych początkach, drugich szansach i uzdrawiającej mocy spotkań.

„Zakończenie nie oznacza przejścia do kolejnego etapu i na tym koniec, trzeba spojrzeć na to, co się robiło do tej pory, i siebie zaakceptować.”

To kolejna perła w dorobku wydawniczym Relacji, która bardzo przypadła mi do gustu. Azjatyckie cozy lektury mają w sobie coś, co przypomina mi, dlaczego tak bardzo lubię czytać i jak magicznym przeżyciem potrafi być literatura. „Poniedziałek z matchą” to już czwarta książka tej autorki dostępna na polskim rynku i - choć nie uważam jej za najlepszą - wciąż niezwykle wartościowa. Najbliżej mojemu sercu pozostają „Wszystko, czego szukasz, znajdziesz w bibliotece” oraz „W księżycowym lesie”, jednak zarówno kakao, jak i matcha Aoyamy mają unikatowy styl narracji, który niezmiennie skłania mnie do refleksji.

Mimo obecności w blurbie Marble Café pojawia się w samej historii stosunkowo rzadko. Wynika to z konstrukcji powieści - poznajemy różnych bohaterów na przestrzeni dwunastu miesięcy, co tworzy wzajemnie powiązany łańcuch opowieści. Powstaje subtelna siatka relacji, która skłania do myślenia o tym, ilu ludzi spotkaliśmy w swoim życiu i jak każdy z nich niesie własną historię. Być może nawet drobnym gestem wpłynęliśmy na jej bieg.

Podział rozdziałów na miesiące, w duchu buddyjskim charakterystycznym dla Japonii, zwraca uwagę na przemijanie oraz zmiany zachodzące w otaczającym nas świecie. W efekcie „Poniedziałek z matchą” zaczyna przypominać bardziej haiku niż klasyczną powieść - zbiór ważnych, ulotnych chwil, które chce się zapamiętać.

To wspaniała lektura dla wszystkich miłośników cozy literatury pięknej. Dla mnie - po raz kolejny - wysoka ocena: 8/10. Polecam.

A sweet little book, "Matcha Tee am Montag" allows the reader (or, in my case, listener) glimpses into the lives of various individuals that all, in some way, are intertwined with one another.

I really enjoyed the two narrators, and once more appreciate the German voice acting/ synchronisation/ narration scene. The audiobook was very pleasant to listen to, with the narration perfectly fitting the vibe and the voices being very easy on the ears.

As for the plot, this was a very sweet book, with a fairly light plot that still hints at deeper issues and topics, allowing the reader to appreciate the characters without it feeling too heavy. The various settings (such as a small lingerie shop, a family-owned candyshop, or an antique fleamarket, among others) all feel familiar and cosy, despite being fairly different in nature still. The characters, too, all have their sympathetic sides, and I appreciated the way that each character is connected, in some way, to at least one of the others.

This was basically exactly what I expected of a recently published Japanese novel, and it fits in very well with novels such as Before the Coffee Gets Cold, Sweet Bean Paste, The Lantern of Lost Memories, etc. etc., that all share the cosy vibe will still being deeper than at first expected, but in a very light-hearted way.
