An Unholy Alliance: How Progressivism Brought About an Islamist Invasion

Rate this book
Across Western universities, newsrooms, and halls of government, an unholy alliance has been forged between secular progressivism and political Islamism—two ideologies united by their shared rejection of Judeo-Christian civilization.

In An Unholy Alliance, Dr. Michael Youssef—a cultural anthropologist trained at Emory University and raised in Egypt under Islamic socialism—exposes the "Red-Green" a strategic partnership between Western socialists and Islamist movements that exploit democratic freedoms to dismantle the very foundations that make those freedoms possible. Drawing from his unique combination of academic rigor, Middle Eastern heritage, and decades of global ministry, Youssef reveals how this alliance operates through what activists call the "Omnicause"—a fusion of climate activism, identity politics, and anti-Christian sentiment into a single revolutionary movement.

From Qatari funding of American universities to the election of socialist-Islamist politicians in major cities, Youssef traces the ideological and financial networks empowering both movements. He demonstrates how Western moral relativism has created a vacuum now filled by radical absolutism, and how cultural self-loathing has invited civilization's undoing.

Yet An Unholy Alliance is not a book of despair. Grounded in biblical prophecy and concluding with genuine compassion for Socialists and Muslims trapped by radical ideology, Youssef distinguishes between political extremists and ordinary adherents. His twelve-point action agenda equips Christians and other concerned citizens to respond with moral clarity, cultural courage, and renewed commitment to truth.

A prophetic and practical work, An Unholy Alliance prepares listeners to recognize the forces driving today's chaos and to stand firm in defense of freedom and faith.

This book was given to me by one of my good friends. He said it is scary to read and I agree. It is so upside-down to see how the progressives and left agenda in this country and others in the West have bought into the narrative of the radical Islamist and their talking points (what the author calls the "Red Green" convergence). I learned quite a bit about Islam, the history of jihad, what the Quran says about Allah, Jesus and others. He had a nice summary comparing Islam to Christianity. In the end he gives the Christian believer action points on how to read what is going on in today's world, make some sense out of it, and a challenge to be a bold witness for the truth.

An Unholy Alliance: How Progressivism Brought About an Islamist Invasion by Michael Youssef is an upbeat book. By ending on a high note, it shows you the problem but doesn’t leave you to despair. The problem? It is described in the book’s title.

It was the book’s title that attracted me. What Christian, watching the current invasion of Islamism into Western nations has not wondered why Progressivism is so accommodating? Dr. Youssef spells it out where he says, “Whenever you take in news, remember that the so-called main stream media or legacy media – Reuters, the AP, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR, the BBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and so forth – are all part of the Omnicause, the Red-Green Alliance. The far-left media is fully allied with Hamas and other Islamist groups, no matter what crimes they commit. Why? Because the media shares the Islamists’ hatred for Western civilization.” p. 159.

Dr. Youssef utilizes Ayaan Hirsi Ali of the Hoover Institute’s descriptions of ‘Mecca Muslims’ and ‘Medina Muslims’ to differentiate between mainstream Muslims and a smaller subset of Islamists mentioned in the following, “I want to say this very clearly: Islamists – Muslims who want to impose Islamic law upon all society – represent only a small fraction of the global Muslim population.” p. 145. Apparently, they number, quoting Ali, “well over 1.6 billion [people], or 23 percent of the globe’s population.” p. 145. However, “If the proportion in the Islamist world is as high as 25 percent, that means that there are 400 million Islamists in the world – and that’s a troubling thought.” p. 146. “The ambition among political Islamists today remains one of totalitarian control over the life of not only every Muslim but every human being.” p. 69. “Mainstream Muslims do not speak out against the excesses of the radicals because to do so means risking punishment and death.” p. 63.

As witnessed by the “rape-gang crisis in Great Britain … The politically correct dogmas of the secular left still compel officials to ignore child rape, torture, and even murder if these crimes are committed by Muslims. The officials worry more about being called ‘racists’ than they care about the destruction of innocent young lives.” p. 26. “Progressives will do anything to prove how ‘enlightened’ and ‘inclusive’ they are. Progressives are scared to death of being labelled ‘Islamophobic’ and so, out of cowardice, and an obsession of ‘political correctness,’ join forces with the jihadists who seek to destroy us.” p. 53.

Those Christians in the Dispensational Premillennialism camp (invented by John Nelson Darby, 1800-82, and popularized Cyrus Ingersol Scofield, 1843-1921, in his ‘Scofield Bible’) will especially enjoy the chapter under the heading, Islam, the End Times, and the Antichrist. Though he says, “I’m a ‘pan-tribulationist.’ I’m waiting to see how the future ‘pans out,’ Dr Youssef clearly identifies with Dispensationalism. That being so, he goes on to identify many similarities between this view and Islam. “…Islamic scholars specifically identify as the Mahdi the man Christians [sic.] identify as the Antichrist … When he appears, all Muslims will be required to give their loyalty to him … And who is the Mahdi? He is unmistakably the Antichrist of the Bible, and when this counterfeit ‘savior,’ the Antichrist, arises to impose his iron rule upon the world, Muslims will have been thoroughly prepared to meet him.’ pgs. 135-6.

An Unholy Alliance: How Progressivism Brought About an Islamist Invasion is a timely book that will help alert Christians and help to equip them to understand and counter the Islamic invasion and its symbiotic relationship with Progressivism.

The book’s main takeaway is that both Islamism and Progressivism “share the same hatred for Western civilization.”

The Enemy of My Enemy Is My Useful Idiot

Hatred is a powerful force. It blinds. It entices. It weakens. It makes haters vulnerable to manipulation. Today hatred seems to be waxing in so many places in our society, our culture, and our world. Nowhere is that hatred better exemplified than in dual hatreds of the Judeo-Christian values of the West and of the State of Israel. That specific focus of hatred is examined by pastor, author, and evangelist Michael Youssef in his excellent new book, “An Unholy Alliance”, a book that could well be subtitled “And an Unlikely One Too”.

That perplexing alliance of hatred and convenience is between the radical Islamist jihadist movement and the Progressive Left, which find common ground in their unbridled hatred. One side of the alliance has been on their quest for fourteen centuries. Their hatred is planted firmly in their doctrine of world dominance through any means and over whatever time is necessary. Their aims are both political and religious, which make them existential. The other side finds its origins principally in Marxism (cultural Marxism in this present form) and keeps reemerging in spite of repeated failures and ideological incoherence with the reality of human nature. The fascinating thing about the alliance is that the newer ally seems naively unaware that its values are utterly incompatible with the values and aims of its long-committed cohort. Should the alliance somehow prevail the Progressive Left soon would find itself in its own struggle for survival, a struggle that it quickly would lose as evidenced by nations that are under the rule of the radical jihadists. Interestingly, Progressive aspirations for “tolerance”, inclusion, and open borders have enabled jihadist inroads into the west. The jihadists seem to have melded an old adage (the enemy of my enemy is my friend) with (ironically) the communist stratagem of the useful idiot. “Queers for Palestine” may be the apex of Progressive idiocy.

Youssef examines in greatest detail the origins and values of the jihadists, as they really are the greater force. In excellent summary fashion he looks at the seventh century origins of Islamic fundamentalism and the twentieth century emergence of modern jihadism with the Muslim Brotherhood and its offshoots. He also raises the dangers of heresies in the modern Christian church and offers illumination and assurance from his views on Revelation from the Bible. The warnings are urgent and the alarms loud, but Youssef finds encouragement in Christian hope and gives an excellent action agenda for Christians to confront the threats. It’s a helpfully thorough examination of a pressing situation in a relatively short and highly engaging book. Youssef is an outstanding Christian interpreter of contemporary issues, on a par, in my opinion with Erwin Lutzer. You should read this.

An Unholy Alliance by Dr. Michael Youssef reveals the ideological and financial infusion of money driving an anti-Western activism which is becoming a growing threat. Radical, political Islam is not only trying to sweep away Christianity in our western civilization but to impose a global caliphate to dominate the world.

This fascinating and well-written book outlines a clear-cut look at the blindness of leaders at the combined assault on democratic and Judeo-Christian values either because of their passiveness or fear of confronting the growing threat. Dr. Youssef provides a well-researched book that's calling for society as a whole and especially Christians to wake up to this growing threat. And in the end he provides hope through faith in our Lord and prayer to stop this radical assault. It is a must read for everyone but especially for Christians as a whole.

A honest exposure of the alliance

Excellent mix of history, storytelling, call to action, and priority to share the gospel. I will be sharing this in multiple groups of influence.
