A beautiful book with positive and uplifting notes and reminders to yourself. I took my time with this book and read a little each day which I think is definitely the way to go to get the most out of it. Would make a great gift for a loved one.

Since the beginning of this year, I have been faithfully reading freya winters’ to myself, with love (2025) with my mother, one day at a time. Her book is filled with 150 daily messages and 12 monthly letters that soften, embrace, and encourage readers to release the expectations and pressures we often place on ourselves. Every time I flip the page, her words gently reintroduce love, compassion, and light into the cracked corners of my heart and memories. The author knows what it feels like to live, to lose, and to treasure the glimmers even in the midst of life’s defeats. While I continue to walk through the grief of losing my father, I contemplate how grief is like wearing the same glasses but with a new pair of lenses. The mind blurs in and out of focus, trying to make sense of this alternate reality.

But freya meets me in my metamorphosis.

Her words guide me through the sadness and frustration that can overtake the body. She reminds me that this deep ache and absence also comes with a profound, lifelong love for my loved one. Like she writes on Day 99, “there is no timeline for how long it takes for a broken heart to mend, and no finish line for how a soul blooms” (108). Since the beginning of this reading journey, freya has taught me that even the most difficult parts of my story have been expanding my identity. Life, with all its new vulnerabilities and complexities, still holds beauty and mystery that are worthy of being fully experienced.

In many of her daily messages, she particularly speaks kindness to the layers between our inner child and our adult self. On Day 22, she writes, “the version of you that carried pain, afraid of how much you could actually endure, they’re in awe of how you carried it with grace, and how you’ve grown stronger with every single step. …every version of you has been right beside you, all along. not just watching, but holding you through it” (31). Instead of sidestepping or shrinking from past mistakes, I’m learning to seal what has already been healed so I can let my spirit soar.

to myself, with love is proof that poetry is powerful enough for anyone to find a soul connection with someone in another corner of the world. Each page reveals her authenticity, openness, and an immense goodness that makes up who she is.

And remember, my dear readers, like freya says on Day 78, “you are a once-in-an-eternity kind of soul” (87). So don’t you forget it.
