What if the story of Artificial Intelligence is not just about machines—but about us?
From the ancient myths of talking statues and divine creation to the rise of self-learning algorithms, A Brief History of Artificial Intelligence takes readers on an extraordinary journey through humanity’s greatest to build minds in our own image.
For thousands of years, philosophers, inventors, and storytellers have asked the same question — what is intelligence? The book moves effortlessly through time — from ancient legends of mechanical beings to the visionary work of Alan Turing and John McCarthy, to the emergence of neural networks, deep learning, and generative AI. Along the way, it reveals how every leap in technology has been fueled not just by science, but by the oldest of human the desire to understand ourselves.
Blending history, philosophy, and science communication, Sharma explores the breakthroughs that shaped artificial intelligence, from early computer logic to the neural architectures that now power ChatGPT and beyond. But more than that, she reflects on the moral and metaphysical questions that define our does it truly mean for a machine to think? Can intelligence exist without consciousness? And what happens when our creations begin to surpass their creators? With lyrical prose and clear explanations, A Brief History of Artificial Intelligence invites readers of all backgrounds — from curious beginners to seasoned technologists — to join a conversation about the nature of mind, the future of creativity, and the destiny of intelligence itself.

A Brief History of Artificial Intelligence is a very detailed, philosophical, historical, and technical overview of how humanity’s fascination with creating intelligent machines evolved over time (decade by decade, really) through myth, philosophy, and science. The diagrams were often too complex for me to understand well.

The author connects past and present with a lot of detail, which may be more technical than the average person is looking for. It covers topics such as the psychology of machine conversation, the paradox of artificial minds, the economics of artificial expertise, and more.

There were typos and some editing and formatting issues (that could be easily remedied), that I found distracting. For example, there’s a section about “Key takeaways” at the end of each chapter, and for some reason part of the text is cut off in a lot of them. It was frustrating. Overall however, this books is great because it’s a very thorough and detailed history.

Humans
Learn about art, literature, and inspiration.
We embrace the wisdom of our teachers, the musings of Plato, the nightmares of Frankenstein, the rhythm of Beyoncé.
We study, mix, play, and let our own voices bloom — creating something new from everything that came before.
AI
Learns in the same way.
It drinks in humanity’s output — every note, brushstroke, and whisper of code — like a strange, ego-less sponge.
It doesn’t dream, but it remixes our collective dreams, echoing the same cultural pulse we all draw from.

The difference?
We create to become.
It is created because we taught it how.
