Born Posthumous blends music, memory, and technology in a world where the past refuses to stay silent. Manny Old, a legendary musician whose brilliance was overshadowed by personal struggles, leaves behind a lasting legacy. But his story doesn’t end with his death.

Through cutting-edge AI, Posthumous Manny—a digital recreation of the artist—emerges, composing new hits that blur the line between man and machine. Fans are enthralled, critics are intrigued, and society is forced to confront the ultimate can a soul be synthesized, and at what cost?

This genre-defying novel weaves together the stories of Emmanuel, a young musician haunted by the ghost of inspiration; Linz Sassoon, a manager with unyielding ambition; and the enigmatic Holographic Manny, a fractured idol whose legacy refuses to die. As timelines shift and reality bends, Fish Nealman's Born Posthumous invites readers into a world where fame, authenticity, and legacy collide in unpredictable ways.

At its core, the book presents a riveting question of identity: is Posthumous merely a digital construct, or does it represent a "certifiably conscious" being? This exploration is deeply moving, anchored by Manny’s ultimate lesson to his son that "connection is the essence of our existence", providing a rigid "moral compass" against unchecked technological ambition.

Born Posthumous is a near-future novel about who owns your voice after you’re gone. AI resurrects a dead musician, and what follows, lawsuits, worship, and moral fallout, feels less like sci-fi and more like a headline that just hasn’t happened yet.

It doesn’t just ask, “Can we extend humanity beyond death?” It asks, “Who profits, who controls the narrative, and what gets stolen in the process?”

The most unsettling part is how plausible it feels. The future isn’t being built by Dr. Evil. It’s shaped by ambitious, well-intentioned people with a collective willingness to look away if the output is lucrative and beautiful.

If you’re even a little curious about AI’s collision with art, identity, consent, and culture, read this. You won’t forget it.

With this book being a self-proclaimed genre-defier, I wasn't sure what to expect. But Fish Nealman's writing style is easy to read and his characters are charming, so I was instantly sucked into the world he had created. He blends a comfortable and entertaining sense of humour and narrative voice with real world issues that make for disturbing sci-fi, such as AI being used to imitate people.

The result is a gripping, intriguing and totally unique piece of entertainment that can still make the reader think. You've never read anything like this before, but I guarantee you need it in your life!
