How to Nick a Nine-Foot-Tall Thrall

Rate this book
I renounced my family’s fortune and moved halfway across the world, all so I could become a law student and fight for non-human rights. But after a wild night out, I wake up to find I’ve accidentally stolen a beautiful nine-foot-tall thrall from her former master.

As if that wasn’t enough, she's wild about me, she's irresistible, and she is very persistent.

But as I fend off her advances and search for a way to grant her freedom, I learn there is more to this exiled Amazon than chiseled abs and a charming smile. She’s gentle, intelligent, and kind—and before long, I’m falling madly in love with her.

But can a woman who is legally my thrall ever truly love me back? And can we figure it out before her former master finds her and takes her away?

I want to start out by praising the prose of this story. It is beautifully and skillfully written, and I really hope that the author continues to write because, despite the flaws of this story (more on that soon), it's another book that I feel raised the bar on what can be expected in terms of Romance For Men.

I mostly enjoyed the actual story. The debate b-plot was okay, if a little too easily resolved, and the twist with the previous owner at the end was a little too obvious given there are only about four characters in the whole book.

I grew to like our MC Aldric despite him being a little too pathetic. It seems like the author is British, based on the language and spellings used, so it was quite nice to find a character that thinks "like me" in that respect. His take on circumcision was a bit weird and misinformed, and his obsession with consent just isn't sexy. Obviously I'm not anti-consent, and I get it's very important, but in a romance novel I think implied consent is king.

My biggest criticism is in relation to the plot to sex ratio. I'd say about 35-40% of the book is erotica. I expect erotic content in a romance book, but I still think the golden amount is around 5%, usually after halfway so that the romantic chemistry has built and we enjoy the cathartic expression of that chemistry in physical form. The romance was a little light, too. The relationship between Aldric and Leia was deeply explored in its intimacy and physicality, but the emotional connection wasn't given quite the same level of care and attention.

I must be honest and say that it's with regret I can only give this book 3.5 stars. It is excellent in terms of writing quality. I really hope that the author continues to write and is able to meet my preferences a little more closely with their next work, which I will check out.

Disappointing.

Quick synopsis: A down-on-his-luck man treats a crying woman with some basic kindness. In doing so, he accidentally takes legal ownership of her as a sex-slave. Thankfully, she was so overjoyed by his kindness toward her that she falls deeply in love with him, and decides to embrace her sex-slavery to him as her new goal in life.
The rest of the story is the man's slow process of coming to realize that her feelings for him are genuine, in spite of both her inability to actually consent to the situation, as well as his own insecurities about his masculinity/desirability.

There is a B-plot about the man gambling his entire future career on whether or not he can win the local university's debate-a-thon, and struggling to compete with his smooth-talking rich-kid rival.

---------

First off: I picked up this book because, from my impression of the Blurb and sample-chapters, this appeared to be one of the rare few books that had a male-sex-fantasy in it (harem, sex-slavery, etc), but actually treated it with seriousness and consideration for the women's point of view.

On this point, the book failed miserably. Without getting into too much detail, the book is written in such a way as to imply that normal consideration for consent doesn't matter in this situation, because the FMC is so physically strong: "if she's not punching her way out of the situation, then she must be consenting". This is an extreme misunderstanding of how power-dynamics and consent works, and it has me a little worried about the author's understanding of the topic (not, like, much. Just as if he hasn't actually thought it all the way through, is all).

---------

Next, it doesn't really feel all that romantic: this is more of a lust/smut book.
It's not devoid of romantic scenes or whatever; it's just that the story kind of likes to treat romance as just a lead-in for sex.
Like, the MMC will have a breakdown over his inability to provide the money they need. She'll find him weeping, pull him into her lap to comfort him. They'll have a romantic snuggle. Then he gets aroused by how nice she's been to him, and so they have sex.
It's like the author refused to have a scene just end in sweet fuzzy romance feelings: romance had to be expressed through sex.

This is on top of the fact that the FMC is kind of just written as a sex-object. I'm not even touching on the obvious point that she's an 8ft amazonian 'dommy-mommy' giantess: that's on the book cover. I'm talking about her having a magical ability to survive off of eating only the MMC's semen, or her having womb-biology specifically designed to fulfill the bad-women's-anatomy hentai-fantasy of penetrating the woman's cervix/womb. I'm talking about her being so innately kinky and submissive that even though her disposition is nearly that of a virgin, her preferred position in life is waiting by the front door on her knees to give her man a blowjob.

Like, I get it, it's a book targeting heterosexual men. I am one. I get it. But this feels overboard, especially when it takes until the very last chapter for the FMC to show any kind of personality or desire beyond sucking the MMC's dick. It's hard to treat this book like a romance when it's written like a porno.

----------

Next, more pervasive writing problems. The story is written with...I'm not sure how to describe it: "missing sentences"? Like, Sentence One will be "He tackled the bad guy to the ground", then Sentence Two will be "He reached out and helped [the fmc] to her feet". Like, no description of how that tackle went? No description of him getting back up, looking around, seeing the FMC lying on the ground, and walking towards her? None of that? It feels like someone deleted some of the sentences, or forgot to fully fill-out a rough-draft outline.

This is particularly bad with Dialogue. Conversations will turn on a dime, end abruptly, or change topic out of nowhere. Characters will have lines like "That's what I just said!", when this is the first time they've said anything of the sort.

The story is also just flat-out uninspired. It's full of little contrivances to make the story fit the cookie-cutter outline of an underdog-rising story. The Big finale, without spoiling too much, is written almost exactly like one of those "and then everyone got up and clapped" posts. It's not, like, unreadable, but it's rough in places.

---------

The more iffy stuff.

The story seems to have included a case of woman-against-man domestic abuse (not the main couple). The way it is framed, it seems like a deliberate attempt to make a political statement on how male abuse-survivors are ignored by our justice system. While I don't disagree with the intent behind the message (Anyone can be a victim of abuse, yes, even a big macho man), I still felt kind of awkward reading a political statement in the middle of this smut-book.

The story misrepresents how Circumcision and smegma work. This might have been included as a fetish-thing, but the way it was presented leaves it possible that it was a misinformation thing, so I wanted to leave a brief note on the subject: Circumcision is not necessary for a clean penis, the USA is the only country that has so many men undergo the procedure, most circumcisions are done just because "well, my son's should look like mine", and most of the pro-circumcision arguments are just leftover puritan propaganda. It wouldn't make much sense for the british-sounding MMC of the story to be worried about this at all.

The B-plot of the story is about the MMC betting his career on a University Debate-club event. The story completely misrepresents how debate-clubs work, how debates work, and how convincing arguments work. The big finale argument that sways the people into agreeing with the MMC is a long-winded, probably-true-but-he-has-absolutely-no-evidence conspiracy-theory. I just...no. The story doesn't even have the excuse of wanting to save the day without violence, because they beat the villain up in the end. Just...if the story didn't want to give a shit about how Debates work, why even have one? I dunno, whatever.

---------

The story isn't all bad; the author has a pretty good grasp of evocative language, the story keeps an overall good pace, and the smutty parts are (generally) creatively written. But my overall opinion of the book is still pretty low; It's marketed with romance and consent front and center, and fails both those points pretty hard.

This wouldn't be half-bad for an AO3 monstergirl smut, but as a published romance book, I was left very underwhelmed.

Sweet and spicy

The mmc's faults are explored and treated with respect and a reasonable amount of healing and help from the fmc. I love this book. I look forward to reading more.

Great novel

A good story that has some good steam and spends most of its time between the two main characters. Not super long but long enough to get invested and really feel the gravity of the relationship building throughout

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would love to read more from this author

weak, annoying MC

The author wrote an MC who doesn’t listen, loves to talk, and is obnoxious as all hell.

I’d say pass on this book.

Unexpectedly good

Alternate universe, fantasy races, monster girl, adult situations

Our MC after a tough day at law school goes on a bender and ends up sweet talking an abandoned thrall, offering her comfort, hot cocoa, and his business card. They both have issues, but seem to find comfort in each other. Excellent editing. Yes, there are unanswered questions, but nothing overwhelming, and yes, we could stand to know about Leia. Works as a stand alone novel or the start of a new series. Enjoyed.
