“In some circles, folk would have called Auntie a witch, but there is a different kind of magic that comes over a person when they are content in themselves.”
Psychopomp & Circumstance is a Southern Gothic historical fantasy novella set in the post-Civil War Reconstruction era. It follows Phee, a young woman who travels to a village to prepare the funeral service for her estranged aunt, against her mother’s wishes and fleeing family expectations that she find a husband. What Phee doesn’t expect is to find a house that seems to hold its own secrets.
I found the premise very interesting, as well as the way it explores grief, but I would have liked more of it. Perhaps I was expecting more Gothic elements, and therefore I found the way the story unfolds rather anticlimactic. Personally, I think that with the few fantastical aspects it has and how we only see glimpses of them, it would have worked just as well as a historical novella, without speculative elements.
