They say the Shabah doesn’t exist.

They’re wrong.

I know because I was one of them—an assassin trained to kill without question and then vanish without a trace. Five years ago, on a mission with my closest friend, Kas, the unthinkable happened. We were ambushed by one of our own. I still see Kas’s blood on my hands and the confusion in his eyes as he died. Like a coward, I ran.

Now I’m back.

Amagi hasn’t changed. Same powerful Guilds, same rot beneath the surface. But I’m not the same man who fled. I’ve spent five years planning—waiting for the right moment to strike. I’ll figure out who was responsible, and every name on that list will pay. Slowly. Painfully. They took my brother-in-arms. They took my peace. I’ll take everything from them in return.

The Shabah think they buried their secret. They believe I’m gone.

They’re about to learn that ghosts don’t always stay dead.

Vengeance is an LGBTQ+ fantasy romance featuring a morally gray assassin sworn to avenge the past, a charming merchant unaware of the secrets in his own, and the dangerous connection that binds them. It's a standalone introduction to the Amagi Chronicles universe.

This was really something very different for Beck Grey, but since I love their work, I was more than happy to go with the change in genre.

First up, I really appreciated the glossary being at the beginning of the book; reading through it made the characters and the world-building easier to follow, and the author has done a great job of building the world of Amagi. Being at the beginning also made it easier for me to flip back if I needed to and still find my furthest read page; saying that, I didn't feel the need to skip back once I started.

I really enjoyed being drawn into the world of Amagi, and its magic system and political intrigue. There were some pretty brutal moments when our hero takes out the bad guys, but they deserved it!

Zayd and Nico made a great couple, and I loved how they became a team by the end of the book. Nico really changed everything for Zayd, not the least his aversion to becoming emotionally entangled with another person, and I enjoyed seeing this change as feelings became involved that he was unable to fight. Nico being able to accept Zayd for who he was and what he did (assassin) made it easier for Zayd to let down his walls.

This was a fast-paced read, and I hope in the next book we get more of Zayd and Nico's story and see how things are evolving in Amagi.

Fantastic book!!

So before I start this review, I gotta say that I'm really hesitant when it comes to fantasy books but I was drawn to the cover and decided to read this book. I must say that this book was seriously good!! I love how determined Zayd was about his mission and that he embraced falling for Nico. The attraction was instant and the chemistry was amazing!! I loved how they worked together and how much they truly cared about one another! Such a great story!!

1st person, present tense, single PoV (Zayd)
Zayd (Bello) al-Qadir (37), protector in the Onyx Guild / Specter (master assassin) in the Shabah
Nicolas (Nico) Medina (34), merchant in the Ruby Guild

For context, I am reviewing this as someone who does not read a lot of fantasy.
I do read a lot of Beck Grey, so here we are.

I really loved the inclusion of the brief history, maps, extensive glossary, and character list, but do yourself a favour and remember it's a helpful reference, not testable material for a pop quiz. I almost psyched myself out of even starting the book since it was so overwhelming without any context. The worldbuilding is pretty complex but Beck does a good job of easing you into it and explaining what you need to know as you go along. A lot of the information included in the reference is nice to know, but not necessary to the story.

Once I started reading I couldn't stop. I found Zayd and his story so compelling; I really loved that this entire book is from his perspective since his story is driving the narrative. His need for vengeance is so relatable after his partner, Kas, is killed, and the secret blood-thirsty part of me reveled in each name he was able to strike from his list. While not explicitly stated, the reader is left feeling like Zayd would have lost himself in completing his mission, like even if he physically survived it, he would quite literally be a spectre of himself.

Nico is the distraction he doesn't need, but can't help wanting and I loved how accepting Nico was of Bello's past. While he has suffered loss, he's a much more open character than Zayd and Beck did a wonderful job of making his thoughts and feelings know without switching to his PoV.

I typically like more schmoopy feels in my romance but acknowledge that that wouldn't have fit the narrative here, so what I love most about their relationship (aside from their chemistry) is the flicker of optimism that materializes over time - being with Nico helps Bello see the possibility of a future, of living again, and being a positive force for change.

While this is a pretty somber, gritty, read, the banter and levity of Bello and Nico's relationship provides a great counterpoint to prevent it from feeling too dark and heavy. They truly became partners and equals along the way and I enjoyed that journey every bit as much as the intrigue and revenge. I'm excited to read more in this world.

I was given an ARC and voluntarily wrote an honest review.

Vengeance by Beck Grey follows Zayd on a gripping journey of retribution after the murder of his friend, Kas. Returning to his homeland of Amagi—a place steeped in corruption, ruthless politics, and deadly secrets—Zayd is determined to see justice done. Along the way, he encounters Nico, and together they uncover truths about themselves and each other while forging a powerful alliance to complete their mission.

Zayd is a compelling character who immediately draws you in, sparking curiosity about his backstory. Deeply introspective and driven by a desire to do the right thing, he wrestles with choices shaped by his past—sometimes to his advantage, and at other times to his detriment. Nico grapples with his place in society, burdened by a tragic past that continues to haunt him and an indifferent father. Through his bond with Zayd, the two not only confront their inner struggles but also inspire each other to grow, ultimately becoming stronger, better versions of themselves.

This story moves quickly! The pacing is well-balanced, keeping the reader engaged without ever dragging or losing momentum. While the story moves swiftly, a bit more detail in certain moments could enrich the narrative without slowing the pace. The world-building is immersive and leaves you wanting to explore more of its depths. The magic system is thoughtfully constructed—powerful and compelling, yet not without its limits, which makes it feel believable and engaging. Also, having a world map is incredibly helpful!

There is much to absorb when entering this world, and the inclusion of a glossary at the start proves invaluable. It offers a clear overview of the people, places, and systems that shape the fantasy setting. Even with that guidance, the story presents a complex chorus of characters—many of whom appear briefly before their role in the mission concludes—adding breadth, though sometimes at the expense of deeper familiarity.

With richly imagined world‑building, a believable magic system, and characters like Zayd and Nico whose struggles and growth resonate deeply, this story offers both action and emotional depth. If you’re looking for a tale of justice, resilience, and unlikely bonds forged in a corrupt world, Vengeance is one you won’t want to miss.

I'm a longtime fantasy reader and was so excited to read this author's detour from contemporary MM romance into fantasy MM. This is a fast-paced, exciting book with darker elements and I hope everyone will love it as much as I do. Whether or not you're accustomed to reading fantasy - this has all the hallmarks of a great fantasy novel: rich world building (without tons of info dumping too! but there are the usual guides/glossaries for those who need them), a logical magical system, lots of exciting - but dark - action/adventure given the overall quest for revenge and the decaying morals of people in charge, and of course, all the secrets and political intrigue to go with those very bad people.

At the heart, however, is the story of how two opposites, Zayd (an assassin) and Nico (a merchant), find each other as Zayd goes about the quest to avenge Kas. And while I found the intrigue compelling and the world itself super interesting, I fell for these characters just like they fell for each other. One of the things I love in many of Beck Grey's books is how the spice burns quickly and oh so hotly, but the emotional development is slower as they get to really know each other. As the adventure moves along, their spicy times begins to reflect the way Nico and Zayd slowly start to develop feelings for one another. Happily, while there are clearly things to explore in future books in this world, Nico's quest comes to a certain resolution, so there's no big cliffhanger and our guys get their HEA. Also - there is a swoony moment or two as well! I enjoyed the banter/witty comebacks, all the action, the spice, and am excited for where the next book will take us!

Zayd is ready to return to Amagi. Amagi is a world of magic and politics. Zayd is an assassin, raised in the ways of the Shabah. When his partner and lover is murdered, he vows revenge. He wasn’t expecting to find love again.

This is a new world created by Beck Grey. It is an exciting and thrilling read. To me it feels like an interesting start to something new. We know that Zayd and Nico come together in this story, but the work that they start is far from finished. There will be more to come and those stories will tie up the political intrigue yet still have that fantastic romance storyline. I really enjoyed the saving magical people of earth via a new world. Let me also nerd out a bit saying that I absolutely loved the maps, glossary, and character list. It was nice to be able to see that pre planning of how the world is set up and who the story will be about. My first thought was this book is going to be intense with all that information. It is, but it is also a layered world that it was good to have the information there. Then when I read the last chapter, it made me believe that there would definitely be more books (I asked, there will be) because look at the depth in creation. So now it is time to wait, semi-patiently, for the next story. My favorite question that comes at the end of a series read…what happens next?

I am not okay after reading this book.

Vengeance wrecked me in the best possible way. This is dark fantasy done RIGHT — brutal, emotional, and dripping with grief, rage, and longing. The kind of story where revenge isn’t just a goal, it’s a wound that never healed.

The main character? A morally gray assassin haunted by betrayal and loss. His grief for Kas hurt so badly it felt personal. Every page pulses with guilt, anger, and that quiet desperation of someone who ran once and will never run again. The revenge plot is slow, intentional, and absolutely feral — you can feel how much blood he’s ready to spill.

And then there’s the romance. Oh my GOD the romance. The contrast between deadly assassin and charming merchant is EVERYTHING. Soft moments wrapped in danger. Trust built in shadows. The kind of connection that makes you ache because you know secrets are going to explode eventually — and when they do, it’s going to hurt.

The world of Amagi is dark and rotten in the most delicious way. Guilds, lies, whispered legends, and a city that eats people alive. The Shabah myth? Chilling. The whole book feels like walking through smoke and steel and unresolved trauma.

This story made me hold my breath. It made me angry. It made me emotional. It made me whisper oh no out loud more than once.

If you love: morally gray men, revenge fueled by grief, fantasy, slow-burn tension that makes your chest hurt, and dark worlds and dangerous love!!!!

READ. THIS. BOOK.

This book is the first in the series, and while I’m normally not a huge fantasy reader, I really enjoyed this one. With it being the first book, there’s the world building and lots of characters to be introduced to. I’ll admit, I didn’t read all of the extras at the beginning (glossary/characters/maps) and I still really enjoyed the story.

The story flowed well and I like how the information I needed to get a full picture as a reader unfolded naturally. I love Zayd as a character. He was very relatable in wanting revenge, and very methodical in making sure he had a solid plan in place before extracting it.

From the moment he first noticed Nico, I couldn’t wait to see how their connection evolved. I could feel how each of them were feeling and my heart ached and cheered through the whole book. I was so glad to see it fully unfold and for Zayd’s trust to conquer his fear.

Nico was so well written! I fell in love with him immediately and I cannot wait to see how he fully develops. The intimacy between Zayd and Nico was so well written that it was obvious when it became more than just physical for each of them.

Thank you so much to the author for allowing me to be part of this ARC team!

Zayd & Nico

"His grin is like sunshine that wraps around my heart, cushioning all the aches."

It's an adventure from start to finish. These two are quite the pair and incredibly entertaining to read. I love that their relationship develops in a very natural way in very unusual circumstances. Nico is drawn into Zayd's orbit and knows his life has changed, even though their lives are thrust further into danger and the intrigue around Zayd's mission of vengeance for his former partner, Kas.

The story is very plot driven and incredibly detailed. I had a fantastic time visualizing all the elements that were included in each and every one of the revenge methods and the environment Zayd and Nico found themselves in.

I'm incredibly excited to see where Beck takes this universe, because I just know there's far more adventure to be had. I don't imagine all the intended future plots deal with revenge, but I do imagine that any action to be had will be just as descriptive and violent.
And if the glossary at the beginning of the book is any indication, there is a plethora to explore and experience.

*The story does have consistently violent and gruesome imagery which may be a trigger for some readers, but I thought it was very well done and gave quite the visual for the story.

I received an authorized copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

This is one for those who enjoy a truly immersive fantasy read.

The author includes all the details you will need to maneuver this universe in the glossary at the beginning of the book, so you get the basics down before you start your quest with Zayd.
Don’t fret if you don't get it all at once; it all fits together easily as the story progresses.

As I stated previously, the world-building was fantastic!
The little details. The everyday life of the citizens. The nuances. The secrets.
It was as though I was there, hiding in the shadows, plotting my revenge.

Then there was the politics, the greed behind the betrayals.
The underhanded political maneuvers and the seedy backroom meetings
So much intrigue. Lots of twists and HOLY SHITTAKE! moments
I was captured from the moment we portaled in

The relationship between Zayd and Nico was high heat!
Nico believed in Zayd and his “mission” from the get-go.
It was insta-attraction, but they fit, and it worked.
I did feel the relationship was secondary to the overall plot.
Their chemistry was undeniable, but the author did not suffer the story for their relationship.
If that makes sense.

This is my first time with this author, but I will be adding her work to my one-click list

Beck Grey has committed to creating a new world, new characters, new understandings of the stories that can be told. This book starts with maps, a glossary, a list of characters, everything the reader needs to take them into the unknown with this story. Why the unknown? Because this is Beck Grey taking us off the planet, into another realm, one where an assassin who was on the run has returned, seeking vengeance.

This world is a complex place where loyalties are hard won, where it is never a good idea to trust easily and where ghosts refuse to stay dead. There is magic and there is mayhem. The characters are intricately drawn, the world well-developed and the balance between allowing the reader time to settle in and getting to the heart of the story is perfect. We are dropped in, not knowing anyone or anything, we are given time to adjust and then the pace picks up. Not only that but there is a HEA for the characters we most strongly wish it for and there is certainly more to come. This world is not finished with Beck Grey yet, it has more stories to tell, more rights to wrong, more justice to dispense.

This is the first book in the Amagi Chronicles and it’s a big departure from the author’s previous books but I LOVE the sc-fi’y kind of books so I jumped on it. While I was a little discouraged at the huge number of terms and character descriptions at the beginning of the book, (there were 24 pages!! My poor brain can’t remember all that!!) once I got into the book, it wasn’t that bad. Certain words would usually jog my memory or, if nothing else, I could search for the word and it would take me back to the description and I’d find out that way. With that said, there are still a lot of characters, their House and their position within their family to try to keep straight but I kept on and really enjoyed it. I was especially glad that even though there are still things coming on the horizon, it didn’t end on a cliffhanger and we at least got an HFN.

I can’t really say if this is considered a sci-fi type book or a PNR but either way, if you like either genre, I’m pretty certain you’re gonna enjoy this book! 4.5 stars

An Amagi Chronicles novel. Fantasy. Single POV. Heed content warnings.

Zayd is on a mission of revenge for the death of his friend and lover, and after five years he finally has the names of the people responsible. As a trained assassin Zayd is ready for anything, except falling in love with a handsome merchant, which he can’t let derail his plans.

This book is a really interesting introduction to a new fantasy world, filled with political intrigue and a group of highly trained protectors and assassins. I really enjoyed how competent and deadly Zayd was and how committed he was to his revenge, and how Nico immediately accepted Zayd’s purpose. These two had super steamy chemistry and falling for each other seemed a little too easy especially for a hardened assassin like Zayd, but their relationship worked in the story bringing a sweet side to the darker overall theme. Overall, a good introduction to a new planned series, and I look forward to seeing some additional stories in this world.

I loved this book so much. This is romantasy at it's finest. The world building was epic, like a real place that I could see in my mind's eye. The different guilds and the hierarchy of Amagi, were so well done. Even now, I can close my eyes and see it. Also, the glossary at the beginning was so helpful in the understanding of this world.

The characters were so well fleshed out that they felt real. Zayd is looking for vengeance and his plans and descriptions of those he's going after make you want to help him out. Even down to whether the person was left or right handed. Zayd uses this info to keep himself safe and to plan his attacks. Nico, also doesn't disappoint either. He brings his own strengths.

Part of the time my heart was pounding and I could barely breathe as the story played out. In other places, I felt like I was going to melt fron the steam and spice. Yes, this is standalone, but I'm looking forward to the next book in series.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.5 stars

Vengeance is a standalone prequel to Beck Grey’s upcoming Amagi Chronicles series. It introduces us to the world of Amagi and all its guilds, houses, and political scheming. I don’t know details on the direction of the main series, but the focus here is on Zayd and his quest for revenge for the lost of his friend and lover, Kas, as well as how he is reshaping the Shabah guild of assassins in the aftermath.

Overall, I found this story a nice introduction to the world of Amagi and thought Zayd and Nico were an interesting and compelling couple. I think Grey lays some nice groundwork here for the main series and I do find myself intrigued enough with the world to want to know more about the main series.

3.5 stars!

Since I do love a good MM romantasy book, I didn’t hesitate to jump on a chance to read this one early. It sounded just right up my alley! And I did enjoy it! Just… not as much as I hoped I would.

Zayd and Nico are both very interesting characters, and once the story and the romance got going, it was highly enjoyable! Action, romance, magic, a quest for revenge,… All the good stuff!

The thing that really dragged things down for me is the very very long glossary at the beginning and the fact that I did need to reference it quite a bit. The worldbuilding is very complex, which is good! But also a bit much for my poor little brain, hah, and it took a bit of the enjoyment out of things for me, sadly.

Still, if you’re into romantasy and love interesting characters with complex worldbuilding, give this one a shot!

For me it was a lighter read than I thought it would be, nothing too graphic, mostly focused between Zayd's revenge and the romance between him and Nico. I thought (based on the book description) that Zayd would be more closed off or a colder person, so it was a bit of a surprise to see that he wasn't.
The glossary was very long, but I did appreciate that it was there.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I liked the time skips here and there, as it didn't make it feel like everything was going too easy.
At one point I did start wondering when the assassinations would begin, but a the same time it made sense that they didn't start earlier.
I would have liked to read a few chapters from Nico's POV, but at it's core this is Zayd's story, so it's not like that would have been necessary.

I am a huge fan of this author’s books already. When I heard they were working on a fantasy book, I knew I would have to read it! I was blown away by the entire thing. The world building, the magic, the characters…such a wonderful book. I was in as soon as I heard Zayd was returning to Amalgi in order to seek retribution for the death of his closest friend and brother. Not only does he find his vengeance, he also finds something he never expected: a connection and relationship with Nicolas, a family member of one of the very guild heads he is marking for death. I devoured this story! It has a bit of politics involved with the governance of their world but it wasn’t too much, nor did it detract from the story for me. I can’t wait to read any more stories set in this world.

I did enjoy that this was not a simple romance but had a deeper plot. The characters (Zayd and Nico) were well developed and easy to root for. They have both lived through their share of trauma, but are able to show love and emotion to each other
I do recommend this book, especially to those who enjoy longer fantasy stories
I have read many books by Beck Grey and although I really enjoy their writing, I found this one was a bit heavy for me.
The glossary at the beginning was a tad overwhelming, it is very detailed. I do understand that this is a new series, in a new fantasy world, so believe that some readers will really enjoy this level of detail and world building. The glossary may have been better mentioned at the beginning but left to the end for those who want to dig deeper.

Beck has created a really fascinating fantasy world, complete with magic, different Guilds and alliances, political intrigue and an assassin organization.

Zayd has returned to Amalgi to avenge the death of his best friend and fellow assassin. He has a list, but he must plan and bide his time to get close enough to the powerful men.

What he doesn’t plan for is Nicholas. An intriguing man who is from the world he is trying to take down, but not a part of it. Zayd has been trained to avoid relationships, and no matter how dangerous it is to them both, their connection makes it impossible to stay away.

Sometimes priorities change, and sometimes you have to learn to trust someone else. Zayd and Nicholas find love and humanity amongst a backdrop of deceit and greed.

Beck Grey's *Vengeance*, the captivating prologue to the upcoming *Amagi Chronicles*, immediately draws the reader in. The story follows Zayd al-Qadir, who returns to Amalgi through a portal after spending five years in hiding on Earth. His sole mission is to take revenge on those who conspired to assassinate his partner, Kas.

Zayd soon encounters the honorable and attractive Nico Medina, and they decide to marry. However, Zayd remains determined to eliminate the corrupt politicians and their associates responsible for Kas's death before the wedding. As a standalone introduction to the *Amagi Chronicles*, this book is highly engaging and has certainly left me eagerly anticipating the sequels.

This is a fantasy story of Zayd and Nico. I highly suggest reading the character lists, glossary, and map to help form an image in your mind and get a bigger grasp on some things. It’s not necessarily required but I found it very helpful.

Now, this story has a good pace that keeps you entertained and involved in the story while not overwhelming you. There is a lot of information to grasp but it won’t slip over the line of too much. Revenge is what Zayd has returned to Amagi, a corrupt place that seems to be built on secrets. Nico is a character that you instantly love and cheer for while the story unfolds.

I am quite excited to read more in this world and with these two so looking forward to another in the Amagi world.

Vengeance is the story of Zayd and Nico. This was a story that pulled me in from the beginning and I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. I loved that the glossary, character list, and other information was put at the beginning of the book because it was very helpful several times. I loved the characters and world building that went into this book. The blurb does a great job of telling you what the story is about. What it doesn't tell you about is all the emotions that come out. I loved watching Zayd and Nico come together and build a relationship while going through everything they have to. I really enjoyed the chemistry between these two. I hope we get more stories set in this world. I would definitely recommend this book.

Great start to a new series!

I loved Vengeance by Beck Grey. I loved Zayd and Nico's story. This story is told through one point of view, Zayd's, which is actually kind of refreshing. I didn't have to try to keep track of whose point of view each chapter is told through. This book was action packed and had lots of spice thrown in. Although, I'm still trying to figure out why the main character who took out the contract on Zayd's partner was spared, but maybe he will be dealt with in the next book. It's not like there would be any love loss between Nico and his uncle. So I look forward to reading the next book in the series when it comes out.

I read this book using the Kindle unlimited app.

A new world - assassins and love. Love the world Beck is building. Looking forward to more.

Amagi - a new world created by Beck. Amongst the world building of assassins and their rules and vengeance, a happily ever after relationship for both Nico and Bello!
Got drawn into the world of Amagi and Beck managed to cover all bases as to why Zayd was on Earth and needed to go back. Intrigued by the action and plans of vengeance, you are compelled to keep reading and see the relationship between the two main characters develop from a one night to many nights. As usual hot scenes and emotional scenes abound but not too much angst.
Definitely recommend a read and delve into this new world Beck is taking us.

This is the first book so there was a lot of character and world building. There is a very long glossary in the beginning that bogged down the story for me. Once I got to the story it was interesting and flowed well. There was a lot to take in, being it was a book building a new world. Zayd and Nico are both interesting characters on a mission. They both have good intentions and I liked that. They do have issues to deal with but it didn't stop them and didn't drag the story. Everything was written so well I felt like I could picture it myself. It was an enjoyable read. Definitely recommend it.

This book is the first in the fantasy series, and I liked it! I loved both main characters, strong and sweet. I love how Nico accepts Zyad with his history without judgement. They work well together and have each others back. The plot is very good as well, I was hooked.
The world is very attracting, magic, very well explained, I really liked the concept, even if sometimes I got lost with the all the different families and Guilds (and I was to lazy to go back each time to the very complete glossary), it's politically complex, but it did not prevent me to enjoy the adventure and the story.

I got an ARC and this is my honest review.

Thank you for the book; here is my honest opinion:
3.5⭐️This has impressive and immersive world building, the author has created a rich setting, and intricate, complex magical setting. If you like books which have maps, complicated politics, and characters guides, this is definitely a great option. I’m maybe not the audience for this, as it gets deeper into the fantasy genre than I personally like. I did love the characters, and I was definitely invested in that part of the story. Nico and Zayd have some wonderful and romantic moments and their relationship really grounded the book for me. Beautifully written, with dimensional characters, a wonderful option for fantasy readers.

I really enjoyed this book. It had lots of action, heat and chemistry between the MCs. The book starts with Zayd and his friend Val at a portal on the earth side. Zayd needs to get back to exact revenge for his lover and fellow assassin Kas. Five years have passed since he left and he needed to find more information. Along the way he meets Nico who is a merchant and can see through his cloaking magic. They get closer, even with Zayd’s training to not have romantic entanglements. I loved how the story progressed with their relationship and how Zayd exacted his revenge. I cannot wait to read the next book.

Zayd’s an assassin with a personal vendetta and Nico has ties to those he seeks vengeance on. This is a complex book of magic, politics, and world-building. While the story started slowly, once Zayd’s arc of vengeance and growth fully began, I couldn’t put it down. The relationship Zayd and Nico build interweaves with the intricacies of Nico’s ties and Zayd’s life in such a way that neither seem to overshadow the other (note: resulting in both a high steam and a high fight quotient for the book! a joy in a fantasy novel). While it’s the first in a series, it works as a standalone well–worth picking up asap and diving in.
