In this Sunny & Shadow Mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of Last Licks, a fat-cat wedding is making waves in Kittery Harbor, Maine.

Political heiress Priscilla Kingsbury is about to marry Carson de Kruk, son of business mogul Augustus de Kruk, at the Kingsburys’ waterfront compound. For reporter Sunny Coolidge, an assignment from the Harbor Courier to cover the event is like catnip.

But when Sunny photographs men pulling the body of a dead woman out of the water, the Kingsburys’ private security isn’t happy. They claim the woman’s death was an accident, but the story seems fishy. Now, with a little help from her police officer boyfriend and her cunning cat Shadow, Sunny is determined to get the scoop on a killer.

Book #4 in the Sunny and Shadow series. There were parts that made me hope that our pets do not feel this way. Did not really like the backdrop on this one. Hope the next one is better. 3 stars

There are so many cozy mysteries that feature cats as purr-fect companions to amateur sleuths and some of the felines even help with critical clues in solving the latest crime but since meeting the cat as created by Claire Donally (pseudonym for the author of many other critically acclaimed cozy mysteries) Shadow is my favorite feline. As I shared in my review of the 1st novel in the series,
"I absolutely purred in my human reading pleasure way for the wondrous names that charismatic Shadow has for humans, the things humans do, the things human say, etc."
In this novel in order for a crime to be solved with insider access to the Kingsburys' waterfront compound it is necessary for Sunny Coolidge to take a break from her usual position at MAX (Maine Adventure X-perience) in Kittery Harbor, Maine, and use her previous reporter experience and also her sleuthing that has been most successful to date. The only one that is not happy about Sunny's need to stay onsite at the Kingsburys’ waterfront compound is Shadow who becomes quite distressed when he views Sunny packing her suitcase. Shadow may be left at home with the "Old One" (a.k.a. Sunny's Dad) but in his ingenious style he's key to the case.

Within this novel, Shadow's experiences are detailed more than ever which I found to be paw-some! It's catnip for human readers from cover to cover!!

Book #87 Read in 2015
Hiss and Tell by Claire Donally

This is the fourth book in a cozy mystery series. However, this book will work well as a stand alone. In this book, former reporter Sunny brushes up on her former job skills when she is asked to bring a local flavor to a wedding of some high-profile socialites. They invite Sunny to their private home. Not to be left behind, Sunny's cat Shadow, a former street cat, manages to tag along and cause some trouble. Not as much trouble as the person murdering people connected to the wedding. Sunny and her cop boyfriend Will attempt to solve the murders.

I enjoy this series a lot. Sunny is an intelligent heroine who can handle herself. Her grumpy father, cop boyfriend and nice next-door neighbor are all good secondary characters. And then there's Shadow...he's a great feline addition to this series: loyal, brave and intelligent. This series is well written and I will continue to read it. I received a copy of this book from Night Owl Reviews in exchange for a honest review.

Hiss and Tell is the fourth book in the Sunny & Shadow Mystery series.

Another fun and exciting visit with Sunny, Shadow and her friends in Kittery Harbor, Maine.

Interesting time are in store for Kittery Harbor, Constable Will Price, the young man that Sunny has been dating, has decided that the community needs a sheriff that will fight crime and not one that massages the numbers to make it appear there is little, and is running for sheriff against his boss. In addition to this there are preparation for the wedding of Priscilla Kingsbury from the politically affluent Kingsbury family who live nearby in the family compound at Neal's Neck. Then in the early hours one morning Ken Howell, owner/editor of the local newspaper calls asking to go with him to Neal's Neck as there is trouble at the compound. They approach from the water and are taking pictures of rescue personnel retrieving the body of a young lady. Ted Trehearne, head of security at the compound, heads out to confiscate the cameras being used. But Sunny is one step ahead and starts to take pictures with her phone, which she emails to the newspaper. Then two things happen that really surprises Sunny. First her former boss from the Standard, in New York City sees her and tells her that he has the notes of a former reporter who says there is someone that is blackmailing people and one of those people is the young lady who has just been found dead on the shore. The other is that Priscilla has asked to stay at the compound under the guise of reporting the planning of her wedding and at the same time try and find out who might have killed the young lady.

The sheriff assigns Will to be the county's liaison with the compound so that he will, for the most part, be out of the campaigning arena. But soon the sheriff is found with his throat slashed, in his cruiser near the compound. Will is now assigned to patrol duty. This leaves Sunny pretty much on her own to find the murderer. But when Sunny returns home to get some more formal clothes, Shadow is able to hide in the suitcase. And as in previous books Shadow is able to do his own sleuthing and helps Sunny capture the killer.

Another wonderful story and I quite enjoyed reading Shadow's thought and humor as his side of the story is presented. Will definitely be watching for the next book in the series.

I absolutely loved every aspect of this story. I was jumping in having not read the first three parts but I did not feel like I was missing a thing. Sunny is a wonderful character and her cat Shadow is too sweet. I loved getting to hear the unique interpretation of what the cat thought about human activities and interactions. He added so much to the story, the bit where he was being chased by Lee and the security staff was hilarious.

The mystery was nicely paced and there were enough clues to point you in the right direction without being glaringly obvious. I wasn't convinced I knew who done it, but I had my suspicions and I was right and to me that makes for a fun, satisfying read, which I can give my full recommendation to.

Hiss and Tell is a Sunny and Shadow Mystery and is book 4 in that series. I really like the scenes in these books from Shadow’s perspective. The mystery in this one centers on scandals, blackmail and a Kennedy-esque style family trying to desperately keep it all under wraps. Sunny gets invited in as a reporter/investigator and Shadow tags along for the ride. I really enjoyed this story with its multiple suspects and complex storyline. Sunny showed more growth in this book than she had in the others, perhaps because we see her out of her comfort zone of her father’s house and the town for much of the book. Good mystery and characters! Recommended read for cozy fans.

Shadow's Antics

Head for your favorite reading place and prepared to enjoy an afternoon of delightful reading. Shadow well have you laughing and smiling as he teaches Sunny a lesson.
Two powerful political family are meeting the area for the wedding of their offsprings. Sunny is selected to be the reporter at large to report on the wedding. Shadow is unhappy to be left behind. Unfortunately there is a drowning at the mansion. This one of my favorite series.

Looking at things from the perspective of Shadow the cat is interesting, especially as Shadow is the best thing in the book. Although the Kennedy-esque/Hyannis Port take-off was interesting, I pretty much knew who was the culprit from their first appearance.

I really like the series but I really didn't like this installment as much. Sunny really aggravated me in how she treated Shadow and I've been getting a little annoyed at how the author defines Sunny's thoughts. With almost every thought Sunny has, it's either proceeded with or followed by something along the lines of "her snarky alter-ego thought", or "her irreverent side thought" and such. It gets a little old. What's worse though, is that some of those snarky, or irreverent thoughts weren't even bad. For instance, once she was (or so I thought) noticing that a woman wasn't so vain to her appearance as to keep her roots dyed. Apparently that's snarky? But then however, she seemed to worry that's how Will saw her at first. So maybe Sunny is herself very vain. Another time, she saw an officer staring at her because she had been staring at his chest (reading his name tag) and realized that she too would be uncomfortable if someone was staring at her chest. Well apparently that private thought was irreverant. I thought it was an understanding thought, especially as she followed it up with appoligizing and explaining to the officer. The worst part of the book though was poor Shadow, and how Sunny was completely unnaware or uncaring to how he felt about her leaving. Yes, she's a first time cat owner, but you'd think by now she'd be a bit more compassionate and knowledgable about her responsibilities and maybe trying to understand her cat's behavior. So when Shadow got clingy at the sight of the suitcase, she seemed to be aware that he knew she was leaving, but instead of trying to calm him, she was mad at him for poking holes in her clothes and causing a scene when she left. And yes, he caused quite a commotion when he stowed away later, but instead of trying to help him or even soothe him after his ordeal, she "gave him the evil eye" and blamed him. When really she could be blamed. She seemed to handle everything wrong and only much later in the book did she seem to start caring. Poor Shadow. I certainly hope my cats never feel as he was depicted as feeling.

Sunny's boyfriend Will Price is running for sheriff against the incumbent and incompetent Sheriff Nesbit. Throwing a wrench in his campaigning, Sheriff Nesbit assigns Will to oversee the safety and security of a celebrity wedding being held out on Neal's Neck. Then Sunny is awakened by the local newspaperman with a hot tip that something's going on out at Neal's Neck. This turns out to be the death of one of the guests. The bride Priscilla Kingsbury ends up embedding Sunny as the media woman on location, giving her a reason to be around and way to investigate the means, opportunity and motives of the various guests and staff on the "locked room" of Neal's Neck. As an added wrinkle her ex, and former editor, is also investigating a story--not a celebrity wedding but about a blackmailer. This person hits the blackmailed with a payout but then requires "favors" of them in the future. He got a hot-tip that someone who was being blackmailed was out on the Neck, which means the blackmailer can't be too far away. Another death, old secrets unearthed, and a stowaway all help to reveal the culprit.

Maybe it was the politics, or the ridiculous rich antics, but I didn't care for this story as well. I also guessed VERY early on who the culprit was.

Sunny is covering the much hyped wedding of political heiress to a business mogul, but she finds herself covering the suspicious death of one of the wedding party instead. Now, asked by the bride-to-be for some damage control in the press releases, Sunny is now on the compound as a guest. And her cat Shadow, is a yet-to-be discovered stowaway. Sunny’s boyfriend, Will, is also working in an official capacity as a police officer. Things are going to get worse before they get better, and much of the credit for both of those things goes to Shadow, the extraordinary cat. It’s quite a tale, intricate and intriguing. Cat lovers will appreciate Shadow’s feelings as he copes with Sunny and her somewhat unfavorable actions towards Shadow. At least he thinks they are, not realizing her true motives. Though part of a series, this story works well as a stand-alone.

I did not like this book quite as well as others I have read in this series. This one involves different characters who are not as likeable and has little or no participation by some of the regulars. Sunny leaves Shadow at home and very unhappy while she stays with a wealthy family who are preparing for an upcoming wedding to cover the event for the Harbor Courier as a freelance assignment. Murders occur, and Sunny assists her police officer boyfriend Will because she is on the estate and has access to people and information. Shadow manages to come in search of Sunny and creates some havoc of his own.

Sunny ends up on the Kingsbury Waterfront when an unexpected death occurs at the pre-wedding get together. Priscilla (bride to be) likes Sunny and has ask her to come up to help find out what really happen to her friend. Sunny has to watch out so that she does not become the next victim. Shadow is upset because Sunny is not home and when Sunny comes home decides to get into the suitcase. Some good twist and a really good ending,

A must read

This is a fantastic story that was quick to read.
A local political family is preparing for a wedding, but nothing goes as planned. Murder, secrets, blackmail and greed are just a few things that Sunny uncovers in her role as reporter at the family compound.
Shadow has a huge role in this book, and there were times I was so sad for him.
I'm glad Shadow survived all his adventures and I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

Sunny and Shadow are back at it solving mysteries in Maine! Some of Sunny's internal dialogue annoys me at times, but that doesn't detract from her being a wonderful character. And Shadow is the best - as always! My only regret is there is only one more book in the series ... to my knowledge. I'd better check on that!

I liked this very clever mystery. Sunny and Shadow are such fun. Sunny is a reporter for the local paper. There is a big wedding of prominent members of the community. Her boy friend is one of the deputies. There is a murder and Sunny goes into the rich peoples compound complete with private security. Shadow meanwhile is none too happy cause he things she is deserting him.

I started to give this 4 stars but couldn't since this one actually was engrossing enough for the 5. The only reason for the downgrade was that I really liked the character who turned out to be the perpetrator. I had picked out another thoroughly unlikeable ass for the villain.

Never read this series before. Was attracted to the cute cat on the cover and the amusing title.
Cute book. Typical cozy. Silly names, minimal mystery.
The cat's POV saved this book for me. I really thought telling part of the story from the cat's POV was fun and cute.

Hiss and Tell is the fourth Sunny and Shadow Mystery by Claire Donally; it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. Sunny Coolidge left her career in journalism in the Big Apple when her father became ill. Her job was eliminated, so she has remained in Kittery Harbor, Maine. The local Harbor Courier, is the one-man newspaper operation of Ken Howell, so Sunny works for MAX, Maine Adventure X-perience, promoting all things relating to tourism and their beautiful area. Shadow, Sunny’s loyal grey tiger cat. has an opinion on everyone and everything. Seeing the world from his cats-eye view is startling at times, often funny, and in this particular story, even heart-hurting. He can find trouble faster than one can say food and shows me how they see us as rather peculiar two-leggeds!

Sunny’s gentleman friend, Constable Will Price, was running for county sheriff against the long-term sheriff, Frank Nesbit. As he began campaigning, the Sheriff assigned Will out of town in Wilawiport, and out of the way of effectively campaigning. The families of a bride and groom and their wedding party were in Wilawiport, the very upper-crust, old-money part of the county. Priscilla ‘Cillie’ Kingsbury, daughter of a generations-old political family was marrying Carson, the son of business mogul Augustus de Kruk. Will was going to be the ‘liaison’ between the Kingsbury family’s security and the community – in other words, traffic monitor.

Late one night, Ken Howell received a tip that something was up at the Kingsbury compound and, hiring a boat and calling Sunny to take photos for him, they learned that a young woman died. This led Sunny to be on-site to cover the wedding events, in the pretense of making sure that the Kingsbury’s had at least one objective journalist. In the meantime, Sunny’s former boss from the newspaper she had worked for was at a press conference – in Wilawiport? He was chasing a story that a retired colleague had been investigating for years about another kind of mogul, the elusive Taxman. The Taxman was a blackmailing, murdering criminal and he could have interests with the wedding party or one of the families.

Wow! What a tale! And Shadow added to the tale; his tail disappeared from Sunny and her dad’s home after went to the Kingsbury’s. Until the day that Augustus de Kruk arrived and the family and friends gathered to greet him – and a familiar tabby tail and darling furry face graced the wall by the main house. What followed next was the beginning of his broken feline heart. Sunny, horrified and frozen in place, didn’t want to admit to being Shadow’s owner and get evicted from the grounds. Shadow didn’t want to abandon Sunny, yet what’s a guy to do? This is where my heart began to hurt for Shadow, and well, you’ll have to read it and see!

The characters are very well-developed, including those who are present only for the duration of this novel. Sunny, Mike, Shadow and Will are flexible as the situation requires without changing their basic makeup. Shadow might actually be my favorite, which could be how well Shadow’s feelings were described throughout this mystery, reminding me that our companions have tender hearts, also. Sunny runs a close second, in spite of her choosing to not call for Shadow – or call off the security team chasing him. Cillie, who definitely isn’t silly, also has much more depth than her nickname might imply.

The plot is thoroughly planned and beautifully executed with all the open ends tied up. There are several possible suspects throughout the story with as many possible outcomes. Sunny risks wearing out her welcome as she pursues some of her snooping; Nancy Drew sure made it look easier than this! The plot twists were unexpected, and I was barely a step ahead of the story in guessing who the bad guy was – only by elimination, certainly not by evidence. The motive was really unexpected! I like a mystery that stumps me, and this did not disappoint! I heartily recommend Hiss and Tell to mystery and cat lovers and anyone who enjoys a well-crafted mystery in unique settings. And five paws …. um, how about four six-toed paws up for Shadow and Sunny!
