Identical twin brothers. WW1. Swapped identities, blackmail, intrigue and romance..

When Jim wakes up in hospital, recovering from battle wounds, everyone is calling him Harry. Since Jim is suffering from head wounds and was brought to the hospital wearing his twin brother's uniform, efforts to set the record straight fail.

On going through his (brother's) pockets, he finds two letters, one from Harry's *gasp* wife (who knew?), and the other from Harry's father in law, a particularly puzzling letter with hints of nefarious dealings...

While his mind is yet spinning, in walks Harry's wife and father in law. Does Jim give up the game or play along to see what his brother's been up to?

I won't say any more, but this was an exciting and fun tale set in Paris at the tail end of WW1. My second George Gibbs book and well worth the read.

The plot is really good, the writing style has the significant characteristics of other books by this author. But I didn’t like the events that led to the conclusion, I hoped for a better happy ending.

What a disappointment! The plot sounded so interesting; a young man swaps places with his cowardly twin on the battlefield, and when he comes to, everyone thinks he's his brother. Including, (where it goes wrong), his brothers wife, who has no love for her husband-who's bad in every way. But, he falls in love with her while trying to unravel the crime his brother is wrapped up in, to protect her, she does with him too, thinking it's her husband, but after she finds out-she still loves him, and the behavior was inexcusable. Some very sleazy characters are in the book too, and I had enough and didn't finish it. Very much disappointed in Gibbs, I hope he hasn't written anymore as bad as this.
