Rate this book

Kahlil Gibran

Kahlil Gibran (Arabic: جبران خليل جبران ) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer.
Born in the town of Bsharri in modern-day Lebanon (then part of Ottoman Mount Lebanon), as a young man he emigrated with his family to the United States where he studied art and began his literary career. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.
He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again, especially in the 1960s counterculture.
Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu.

I seriously doubt if this one is even remotely related to the original Kahlil Gibran's writings.

At this point of my reading life, I definitely do not want to read books that are really preachy and one-minded.

This collection was supposed to be an insightful read, like some kind of a mindful poetry collection as well as some fables thrown in here and there.

But it turned out to be really laborious and monotonous to read and enjoy.

The language and the writing style are fine but everything about the book seems so incomplete and forced.

The whole content is divided into six sections:
1) Listening to Nature's Life
2) Beauty and the Song of Life
3) Life's Human Journey
4) Seasons of Life
5) Paradoxical Life
6) The Life of the Soul

Sadly, I couldn't find a favourite line to quote here out of these many sections.

I needed a break from all the fictional and real world madness. I wanted to pick up something to relax my mind. I specifically started reading this book today because of it's pretty, calm cover (it's a beautiful edition and gifted to me! I feel like crying now 👀) but it's really sad that I simply cannot find the book remotely rewarding.

It focuses a lot on a religion as well as too busy in pointing out that human are too ignorant and the one narrating it as almost as omniscient. It's this factor that makes me feel like this book sounds really arrogant as well.

But yes, I am still going to read Kahlil Gibran's other popular books. And not such books which use the names of famous personalities for nothing.

I am still loving the cover though. Amaryllis and Co, awesome job💯

Some of my favorite verses from the book:

(1)
Life is a procession.
The slow of foot finds it too swift and steps out.
And the swift of foot finds it too slow and also steps out.
.
.
(2)
He who longs the most
lives the longest.
.
.
(3)
In the autumn, I gathered all my sorrows and buried them in my garden.
And when April returned and spring came to wed the earth, there grew in my garden beautiful flowers unlike all other flowers.
And my neighbors came to behold them, and they all said to me,
"When autumn comes again, at seeding time, will you not give us of the seeds of these flowers that we may have them in our gardens?"
.
.
(4)
Perhaps the sea's
definition of a shell
is the pearl.
Perhaps time's
definition of coal
is the diamond.

oh nozzzz wanted to like this book as a whole but there are some parts where i didnt enjoy them as much. maybe i might be a little bit biased here but i dont really fancy kahlil gibran's style of writing so i guess its the reason why that i wasnt able to appreciate his poetry a lot.

however, i do have some that i really like and one of them is "youth and knowledge":
you cannot have youth
and the knowledge of it
at the same time.
for youth is too busy living
to know,
and knowledge is too busy
seeking itself
to live.

"Mała Księga Życia" to zbiór mądrości, krótkich opowiastek i wierszy Kahila Gibrana, czyli libańskiego pisarza. To odpowiedni dobór słów nadaje piękno i wielowymiarowość całym zdaniom i zwrotom.

Takie małe, a daje tyle radości.

It has been long time that I picked a book from my to-be-read book list. I have been obsessed with the thought of poetry all around me. This book I picked from the World Book Fair in Delhi on my birthday. It took me a while to finish this sweetheart, outpouring each and every word from the book. I am glad that it is not a novel, which has a series of events following every chapter. The poems has a short-life while you read and long lasting memory in your brain. It has been an incredible read, following different objects such as nature, human being and more about life. At the end of the book, I could not figure out which was my favorite poems, out of all. However, I would like to quote few lines from this wonderful collection of poems.

"There are no miracles beyond the seasons, yet You and I do not know all the seasons"

"In the autumn, I gathered all my sorrows and buried them in my garden"

Kahlil Gibran's 'Little Book Of Life' is divided into six sections. Each section consists of thoughts and poems about varied ideas, phenomenons and a lot more. The first section is named 'Listening To Nature's Life' and consists of poems about nature and our reactions. The second section is called 'Beauty And The Song Of Life' and has poems that reflect on life's purpose, the importance of freedom and more. Next section is named 'Life's Human Journey' wherein there are poems which communicate how if you find pleasure in everyday life, you will find beauty. The next section is called 'Seasons Of Life' and here the poet discusses the various seasons with respect to life. The next section is named 'Paradoxical Life' and reflects on how it's in the paradoxes that we discover the unity and the essence of life. The last section is called 'The Life Of The Soul' and talks about the Greater Self and the soul.

This book is beautiful. It's so complete and that it made me feel like whole again. Pick it up on your darkest days to feel better. Or pick it up just to read beautiful poetry.

THE VALUE OF TIME

They deem me mad because
I will not sell my days for gold.
And I deem them mad because
they think my days have a price.

They spread before us their riches
of gold and silver, of ivory and ebony,
and we spread before them
our hearts and our spirits.

And yet they deem
themselves the hosts
and us the guests.

These words above not just capture ones attention but soothes ones soul. Kahlil Gibran is a poet who digs deep into the life, death and all in between LIFE and DEATH to convey a very simple but complicated message to the humankind. His Little Book of Life is not short of any Wisdom which a person is in search of. As Neil Douglas-Klotz says these are "Timeless Wisdom to Feed the Spirit and Nourish the Soul".

I have read Kahlil Gibran's works: "The Prophet" and "Sand and Foam". "Sand and Foam" is my favorite. I find it to be the most insightful. I was happy to see his name in this work "Kahlil Girban's Little Book of Life" within the stacks of my library.

There is a nice assortment of Gibran's poetry in this book. All of it, unrecognizable to me.

'The Value of Time' calls to me on a high range of feelings, in having to sacrifice personal time for the almighty dollar... "They deem me mad because I will not sell my days for gold. And I deem them mad because they think my days have a price".

I echo the sentiment of others: it does not read like other books by Kahlil Gibran. You can tell it was edited posthumously.

It's a bit all over the place: there's poetry, there's prose, there's a mix of topics that sometimes feel fluid and sometimes confusing.

I know the name Kahlil Gibran, but haven't checked out any of his work. I figured, seeing this on the library shelf, that maybe this collection could act as an easy introduction that would give me some scope of his style and ideas. I sort of expected to be more enraptured with this, especially because I am not adverse to poetry collections designed to be inspirational, but it was just sort of an okay book of poetry. It wasn't bad by any means, but it didn't blow me away based on what I had heard about Kahlil Gibran. Maybe this is due to the translation or how the book is formatted, either way I definitely think if I want to get an idea of Gibran as a poet then I need to look elsewhere.

When, with an incalculable number of infinitesimal needles of insufferable coldness of ice, a stony heart is pricked over and over again at the same spot, the heart of stone steadily turns into flesh and the flesh start to tear and bleed of love, passion and peace. And he heals the wounds he ripped, with his own soothing words so you know you are, after all, a human, behind the veil of indifference and are very much capable of experiencing peace followed by pain.

Words with so much wisdom.

I have always been a fan of poetry. Gibran is a great peot and his poetry is filled with great wisdom. Each night as I read a few lines I was filled with such epiphany of my own thoughts towards the world. The author has tried to keep in tact the true essence and done justice in translation.
